16 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon HealtHy eating Healthy Choices from Baxters Preparing for the run? Here s some advice and Baxters goodness to help you reach your peak performance. Keep your diet in great shape Good food and fitness are closely tied together. A balanced diet full of nutrients will fuel your active lifestyle and keep your body running at 100%. Not only that, but it can also prevent injury and speed up recovery. Healthy and hearty can be easy As the title sponsor of the Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running, it s no surprise that Baxters is committed to making meals that help everyone eat well and lead active lives. Baxters Hearty Soups are especially goodness-packed, and made with wholesome, protein-rich ingredients that provide up to 3 of your 5 a day. And despite being filling, they re low on fat. feel-good food to fuel your training, look no further. With 12 different recipes, from Country Vegetable to Moroccan Harira, you re guaranteed to find flavours you ll love.

17 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon Tips to maximise your performance Eat at least 2 hours before a run, and keep it light. That way you ll avoid stomach cramps and stitches. Baxters Hearty Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato Chilli & Lime Soup is perfect for providing healthy, slow release energy 2-4 hours before a run. Stay hydrated. Try to drink 3 litres of water a day, and even more when you re training. Drink regularly, and don t drink too much in one go. Make sure you re hydrated before exercising, and afterwards too. Soup, thanks to all the nourishing nutrients and minerals in it, is ideal for replenishing post-exercise. Things to remember on the day You re likely to be excited on the morning of the big day, but you should still try to relax and store up all the energy you need for what s ahead. At the start of the race, it can be tempting to try and keep up with others and go faster. Fight that urge, stick to your own pace and don t risk over-exhausting yourself. The rush of emotions as you cross the finish line might make it feel like you can just keep going, but your body is running low on energy. Visit the Food Tent to rehydrate and refuel, and don t forget your meal ticket. There will be a replenishing bowl of Baxters soup and bread waiting for you there. Most importantly, take a moment to be proud of yourself, and celebrate all the hard work you ve put into preparing for the marathon. Enjoy yourself, and remember to take in the gorgeous views of Loch Ness. Good luck to everybody taking part! It s important to note that this is general advice. Training diets vary from person to person, so it is essential that the diet you adopt, and the products that form it, are suitable for you.

25 official charity MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT Baxters Loch Ness Marathon We re delighted to partner again with the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running as the official charity. Every year we welcome hundreds of people to run with Team Macmillan and this year we d love for you to join us. You ll be joining a team of incredible people who are working hard to make their run count people like Tim. After sadly losing his cousin last year to ovarian cancer, Tim decided to sign up for his first marathon to help celebrate her life. My cousin had always been a great explorer and was no stranger to new challenges, so running a marathon in her name seemed appropriate. As my relatives came from the Highlands, I chose Loch Ness as the perfect event to take on. I m not a good runner, but I find it much easier to commit to my training and the run itself when I m running for a charity, especially for Macmillan who do such caring work. The goal for many people will be the marathon itself, but for me it s raising money that s key and I know it will be a hugely emotional day. Tim, 2017 Team Macmillan runner The support of every Team Macmillan runner is making a huge difference in helping to fund vital services for people affected by cancer all across the UK. But right now, we can t reach everyone who needs us. Almost half of us will get cancer, and we need your help to make sure that people get the support they need to face one of the toughest fights of their lives. You, like Tim, can use your challenge to make a difference. All we ask is that you raise as much as you can. As a thank you in return, you will receive: a free running vest access to training & fundraising help support all along the course a free massage at our hospitality tent once you ve crossed the finish line Good luck and we look forward to welcoming you to the team! If staying a little further afield, we would encourage you to car share wherever possible. There will be litter and recycling bins located at the Event Village, race starts and a short distance from each drink and feed station please help us by depositing any rubbish in these. 53 DO NOT BE LATE for transport departure to Marathon Start on race day. Timings are very tight and transport WILL NOT wait for late arrivals. If you miss our transport, you will be unable to run due to restricted control of transport at the Start. Please be aware that weather conditions can change and deteriorate rapidly in the Scottish Highlands and you should bring appropriate clothing to keep warm and dry at the Marathon start in case of adverse weather. Lubricate all moving parts liberally with Vaseline. Many runners use a bin liner to keep warm at the start of the race. Please place your liner at the side of the road when you discard it, so that it does not cause danger to other runners. Do not alter direction suddenly, particularly at drink and feed stations, and try to steer a course for a table where there are fewer runners. Ensure you re-hydrate fully in the days before the event and drink regularly along the route especially in warm weather. Do take it easy until you are well past the halfway mark. You should be able to have an intelligible conversation with those around you! Please help us keep Loch Ness and Inverness tidy and deposit all rubbish (bottles, gels and other items) in the rubbish collection points which are located 1 mile after each drink and feed station. Please note that wearing headphones is not permitted in any of the races under Scottish and UK Athletics rules. We do allow the use of headphones that use bone conductor technology, which allow the wearer to be aware of their surroundings. However, this is at your own risk and if an incident occurs as a result of, or made worse by, you wearing these headphones you may be held liable. We hope your training has gone well, and would like to remind you that if you have recently had a bad cold or have been ill it is important to seek medical advice prior to the event. Also if your training has not gone to plan, we ask you give serious consideration to your ability to run the marathon.
