NAIA Track & Field Rules and Regulations Honest Effort From the current NAIA Track and Field Coaches Manual Track and field rules as specified in the NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Rule Book shall be followed. To receive a copy, contact NCAA Publishing, P.O. Box , Indianapolis, IN , Telephone (888) or download from A. Exception By vote of the TFCA and CAA approval, effective fall 2007 NAIA track and field adopted the following honest participation rule in lieu of the Failure to Participate Rule which was adopted by the NCAA in (Rule 4-2-2): 1. Athletes must participate honestly in all trials and finals of all track or field events in which they legally are declared or they shall be barred from all remaining events in the current meet. Athletes must compete with maximum effort and/or qualify from trials into the finals. 2. Athletes must participate honestly in the finals of all events in which they are legally declared and qualified, and in which such participation is criteria for entry in a subsequent meet. Note 1: It is understood that passing on trials in field events is a strategy available in those events and is not considered a question of honest effort, provided at least one trial has been made. Note 2: Failure to complete a combined event competition shall not affect subsequent participation in an open event. NAIA modifications to NCAA rules may be implemented by the appropriate Games Committee with input from NAIA-TFCA. At the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, enforcement of the Honest Effort Rule will be administered as follows: 1) The medical doctor/certified trainer shall examine injured competitors and make recommendations to the competitor, the competitor s coach and the representative of any sponsoring organization as to the advisability of continued participation by the competitor in the meet. Such recommendations shall be considered in the application of the honest-effort rule. 2) Should the decision be made to withdraw the competitor from the current event, the competitor shall be scratched from any subsequent event(s) in the meet, unless otherwise approved to continue participation by the medical doctor/certified trainer.

Below are additional notes to identify some of the other times when the honest effort rule is either implied or creates situations that are not specifically referenced in the rulebook. This is an attempt to take some of the ambiguity out of the Honest Effort Rule. Note 3: If during the combined event an athlete participating in the combined event fails to participate in another open event for which they are declared, that athlete will be allowed to finish the combined event but will be barred from participation in any further event in the meet. The combined event will be treated as one continuous event. Note 4: If an athlete is declared in more than one event that is simultaneously being contested and fails to participate in one of the events, the athlete will be allowed to finish the event(s) they have been participating in but will be barred from further competition at the meet. Note 5: The head coach, wishing to reinstate an athlete who missed an event due to injury, must report to the Meet Medical Area and have the Meet Medical doctor/certified athletic trainer complete a Medical Request for Reinstatement to the Championship form and submit that form to the respective Head Event Referee for a final ruling. This process must be completed before the usual 30 minute window expires for protesting results for the event. Note 6: The Honest Effort Rule implies that competitors will compete honestly and with maximum effort. This is a judgment call made by the Umpires/Judges and directed to the Head Event Referee for a final ruling. If it is ruled that the athlete did not compete honestly and with maximum effort, the Head Event Referee shall warn and/or disqualify the athlete from the event and from the remainder of the meet. If the athlete is disqualified, a DQ will be posted in the results. Note 7: There are times when an athlete will not finish an event for legitimate reasons. Examples would include a false start or a fall. This should be noted in the results as DNF (did not finish) and not confused with the Honest Effort Rule. However, all competitors who do not finish because of an injury must re-enter the meet through the medical re-certification process. Note 8: A DNS (did not start) in the event heat/flight reporting sheets will indicate that the athlete failed to report to the start of an event and will be listed in the final results as a DNS. A DNS means the athlete will be barred from further competition at the meet unless approved for further competition by the respective Head Event Referee. Note 9: Once the championship has started, if a Games Committee decision to alter the meet schedule causes a conflict for an athlete declared in another event, the athlete will not be penalized for missing the other event. One way to address possible confusion with this rule is to make a formal process for the coach to follow and to put a time limit on that process. The usual 30 minute window for protesting a result is sufficient for the coach to get the athlete to the medical area for evaluation and the form to the Head Event Referee. If the results are altered (DNS to DNF) it would start the next 30-minute cycle for protest.

Such an exam may take place anywhere on the course. A competitor must retire at once from the race if ordered to do so by a member of the official medical staff. Team personnel (including the team s own athletic training staff) and spectators are not permitted to conduct the examination or have physical contact with the athlete at any time during the competition, except to hand the athlete aid (drink, gel, food, sponges, Vaseline) within 100m of an aid station. On the report of an official, a warning or disqualification shall be ruled by the referee when a competitor has been aided. UNIFORMS The uniform rule used for the rest of the meet applies to marathon participants (i.e. no midriffs). Schoolissued uniforms must be worn at all times. Uniforms cannot be cut or altered in any way. TIMING / BIBS Bibs must be worn on the front and back. A transponder chip timing system will be used. Please make sure athletes have both their bibs and their chips at the start of the race. There will be a timing mat at the finish line. Please instruct runners to be sure they cross the mat and have their chips removed. A fee will be charged for any chips not returned after the race. TIME LIMIT Three hours and 20 minutes after the start of the race, any roads closed before mile 21 will be reopened. For athletes who have not yet reached mile 21 at this time, official medical personnel will determine whether it is safe (both medically and street safe) for the athletes to continue. If it is determined that the athlete is physically okay and the course is safe, the athlete will be allowed to continue. If it is unsafe or the athlete is deemed by official medical personnel to be at risk, the athlete will be retired from the race immediately.

WEATHER CONTINGENCY PLANNING Any weather issues will be communicated via Facebook under Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission/ Please follow this Facebook page for instructions in the event of a weather emergency. Marathon Meeting A meeting reviewing the marathon will be held on Friday at 9:00am. Please meet under the shelter near the parking lot by the finish line. AWARDS CEREMONY Marathon awards will be presented at approximately 2:20pm on Saturday at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.

Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death in the United States and the second leading cause of accidental death for persons aged 5 to 44. Many times swimmers who drown do so by being caught in a Rip Currents. Why Rip Currents Form As waves travel from deep to shallow water, they will break near the shoreline. When waves break strongly in some locations and weakly in others, this can cause circulation cells which are seen as rip currents: narrow, fast-moving belts of water traveling offshore. Why Rip Currents are Dangerous Rip currents are the leading surf hazard for all beachgoers. They are particularly dangerous for weak or non-swimmers. Rip current speeds are typically 1-2 feet per second. However, speeds as high as 8 feet per second have been measured-- this is faster than an Olympic swimmer can sprint! Thus, rip currents can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea. When Rip Currents Form Rip currents can be found on many surf beaches every day. Under most tide and sea conditions the speeds are relatively slow. However, under certain wave, tide, and beach profile conditions the speeds can quickly increase to become dangerous to anyone entering the surf. The strength and speed of a rip current will likely increase as wave height and wave period increase. They are most likely to be dangerous during high surf conditions as the wave height and wave period increase. Where Rip Currents Form Rip currents most typically form at low spots or breaks in sandbars, and also near structures such as groins, jetties and piers. Rip currents can be very narrow or extend in widths to hundreds of yards. The seaward pull of rip currents varies: sometimes the rip current ends just beyond the line of breaking waves, but sometimes rip currents continue to push hundreds of yards offshore. How to Identify Rip Currents Look for any of these clues: a channel of churning, choppy water an area having a notable difference in water color a line of foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily seaward a break in the incoming wave pattern None, one, or more of the above clues may indicate the presence of rip currents. Rip currents are often not readily or easily identifiable to the average beachgoer. For your safety, be aware of this major surf zone hazard. Polarized sunglasses make it easier to see the rip current clues provided above.

How to Avoid and Survive Rip Currents Learn how to swim! Never swim alone. Be cautious at all times, especially when swimming at unguarded beaches. If in doubt, don t go out! Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard protected beach. Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards. If caught in a rip current, remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly. Don t fight the current. Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim towards shore. If you are unable to swim out of the rip current, float or calmly tread water. When out of the current, swim towards shore. If you are still unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself: face the shore, wave your arms, and yell for help. If you see someone in trouble, get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call Throw the rip current victim something that floats and yell instructions on how to escape. Remember, many people drown while trying to save someone else from a rip current. Rip Current Myth A rip current is a horizontal current. Rip currents do not pull people under the water -they pull people away from shore. Drowning deaths occur when people pulled offshore are unable to keep themselves afloat and swim to shore. This may be due to any combination of fear, panic, exhaustion, or lack of swimming skills. It sometimes seems as though there are too many signs, but the ones at the beach are intended to help keep you safe and inform you about local regulations. Read the signs when you first arrive and please follow their direction.
