6 Facts & Figures of the PDG 2018 The Patrouille des Glaciers (PDG) is an international ski mountaineering race organized by the Swiss Armed Forces in which military and civilian teams compete. The race leads from to Verbier (course Z) or from Arolla to Verbier (course A). The very long race distance, the extreme route profile, the high altitude and the difficult alpine terrain with glaciers and couloir climbs are the main features of this unique competition. Participants who register for the PDG competition must meet the following requirements: sound alpine knowledge active alpine touring skills and experience participating in mountaineering competitions excellent skiing skills experience in skiing while roped to others very high level of training ability to complete the following distances under normal conditions within the times allocated: Race Z1/Z2 - Schönbiel within 3 h - Passage in Arolla at 0630 at the latest - Arrival in Verbier in 1600 Race A1/A2 - Arolla - Col de Tsèna Réfien within 1 h 45 - Arrival in Verbier at 1600 at the latest General overview: o 21st edition of the PDG (3 editions between 1943 und 1949; since 1984 all two years an edition was held) o Since 1984 a race had to be (partially) cancelled only in four years: 1986, 2002, 2012, 2016 Participants: Total of approximately 1600 patrols (teams) with a total of 4800 athletes comprising as follows (at the time of the end of the registration period in October 2017): o 500 Swiss military patrols o 45 international military patrols o 171 civil patrols with mountain guides o And 910 civil patrols There is a mix of 19%/81% of female/male participants, and 334 foreign patrols. Staff: o There are approximately 1500 members of the Swiss Armed Forces who serve for the benefit of the PDG, this being during the setup, the race or during the dismantlement of the race o During the race itself, there is a peak of appr members of the Swiss Armed Forces engaged.
