2 LEG #1- TRAIL MAP DESCRIPTION The runner lucky enough to start the race for their team immediately encounters the densely wooded trails of the Trapp Family Lodge. This 2.5 mile loop provides the excitement of the start and the quiet of the woods, only to return to the buzzing crowds circling the start line and the first transition. Trail leaves the Von Trapp Bierhall at the start line and makes its way up hill to the Greenway loop. Entering back into the woods along Sleigh Road and then taking a right onto the single track of Pipeline. A left hand turn takes you back onto Hop Over and back to the Trapp Bierhall for the transition. MILEAGE: 2.5 RATING: Green Circle ELEVATION MAP

4 LEG #2 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION The energy will be peaking as the first runners hand off to the second runner amidst all the crowds at the first visible transition area. Runners will leave the Bierhall transition and run along the Trapp Meadow Trails towards the Wedding Meadow where they will take a right and quick left to descend the Trapp Hill dirt road. Be sure to look around at the views and the cows. The dirt road reaches pavement at the bottom of the hill and turns left onto Moscow Rd. Stay on Moscow road until the junction with Rte 100 where you'll receive crossing guard assistance to cross the road and turn right. The transition is ahead at the Hunger Mtn Church. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of Von Trapp Bierhall 2) Turn Right onto Barrows Road 3) Turn Left onto Moscow Rd 4) Turn Right onto Rte 100 South 5) Arrive at Transition on the Left MILEAGE: 7.2 RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

6 LEG #3 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This run starts with views of the Green Mountains, rolls along Rte 100 with shops, Inns and tourist landmarks. Shortly after passing Ben and Jerry's and the Thatcher Brook Inn, you will roll down the hill and turn left onto residential Stowe Street. At the end of Stowe St, turn left onto Rte 100 again and enter historic downtown Waterbury. Travel along the sidewalk on the left and then use crossing guard assistance as you turn right onto Rte 100. You'll now climb the last hill to Crossett Brook School. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Left out of TA Parking Lot 2) Travel 4.3 Miles then turn Left onto Stowe St (If you reach the highway you've gone just too far) 3) Travel.9 Miles and turn Left onto South Main St. 4) Travel 1 mile and turn Right onto Rte 100 5) Arrive at Transition on the Left MILEAGE: 7.0 RATING: Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

There is a traffic circle in front of the school-the transition is at the center of the circle. 8 LEG #4 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg is one of the harder legs in the race due to uphill terrain, but runners brave enough are rewarded with a downhill finish. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. 10 LEG #5 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg is mainly flat to downhill and relatively easy. A very scenic run that finishes at the Waitsfield Town Common. Features on this run include a covered bridge. Town Common will be on on the left hand side of the road. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Left out of TA Parking Lot 2) Travel 1.1 Miles and turn Right onto Rte 100 South 3) Just before mile 3 turn left onto Meadow Rd 4) At the end of Meadow Rd, turn right onto North Rd 5) Follow North Rd until you arrive at the transitionon your right. MILEAGE: 5.26 RATING: Blue Square ELEVATION MAP

12 LEG #6 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION Runners leave the transition area and continue along the backroads of Waitsfield. runners are treated to some of the most scenic views along the course. It wouldn't be the Heart of Vermont without a hill before those sweeping views are seen though. As a tribute to the horse farms in the region we've dubbed a feature on this leg "The Saddle". You'll know when you're there as you'll rapidly drop 300 vertical feet only to climb back up it on the other side. A Vermont race wouldn't be complete without a farm transition and Wadhams Stable Morgan Horse Farm serves as the transition for this leg of the race. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Leave the transition onto Common Rd 2) At the end of Common Rd take a left onto East Warren Rd 3) Remain on East Warren Rd until you arrive at Transition on the Right. MILEAGE: 5.48 RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP
13 LEGEND Portable Toilets Cones serve as the official handoff spot Runners Route Wadham s Horse Farm Car Route House Car Turn Around Special Note: Prestigious Horse Farm- Extremely high discretion is necessary. Very minimal presence. Do not feed the horses-we are allowed to pat them if they come up to the fence. No one must enter the fenced off areas. Noise must be kept to a minimum (no horn honking, etc) Parking should be filled along the road. Do not turn around or access the barn in anyway.
14 LEG #7 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg leaves the Horse Farm and continues with the sweeping views of Sugarbush ski area. The course dips downward into the start of a heavily forsested section of the course. Runners turn left onto Main St in the town of Warren and then turn right onto a covered bridge at the far end of downtown as cars take an alternate route. As runners rejoin Rte 100 they continue along the left side of the road until they receive crossing guard assistance near the transition. The transition is on the right at a large picnic area. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto East Warren Rd. East Warren Rd becomes Brook Rd. 2) Travel on East Warren Rd/Brook Rd for 2.9 miles (Runners will turn left onto Flat Iron Rd, Cars Bear Right onto Main St) 3) Remain on Main St for.2 miles until the Jct of Rte 100 4) Turn Left onto Rte 100 South and remain on it until you arrive at the Transition on the right. MILEAGE: 6.6 RATING: Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

16 LEG #8 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION Any runner strong enough to carry the distance will not be disappointed. The Breadloaf Wilderness provides mainly flat terrain amongst dense forest that provides a cooling shade along the leg. Runners are treated to raging waterfalls that provide a refreshing mist. Arguably the most scenic and spirtual leg of the race. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the Transition on the Right. MILEAGE 8.3: RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

18 LEG #9 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION The forest is left behind and the full pasturelands of the Green Mountains begin. This leg is mainly flat and transitions at Verde Antiques in the quiet town of Hancock. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the Transition on the Right. MILEAGE: 3.5 RATING: Blue Square ELEVATION MAP

20 LEG #10 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION Runners leave the transition and continue along Rte 100 passing more of Vermont's heartland on this mainly flat and easy run. Runners transition at the Rochester Elementary School. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the Transition on the Right. MILEAGE: 4.2 RATING: Blue Square ELEVATION MAP

22 LEG #11 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg stays directly on Rte 100 and is mainly flat. The terrain is not difficult, but the distance is long. Runners are rewarded with sweeping views of lush green land. Runners are REQUIRED to run on the right side of the road for safety as there are a number of blinds turns on the left side of the road. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the Transition on the Right. MILEAGE: 7.3 RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

24 LEG #12 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg is flat and fast! Teams are really clumping together at this point so this is the time to make your move and separate from the pack enroute to the Clear River Inn Transition. This is a very enjoyable middle distance flat run through the growing town of Pittsfield. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Blackmer Rd (Runners remain on Rte 100 while cars take an alternate route 2) Travel 2.6 miles on Blackmer Rd until the intersection of Rte 107 3) Turn Right onto Rte 107 4) After 2.6 miles Rte 107 and Rte 100 South merge back together. 5) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the Transition on your Left. MILEAGE: 5.2 RATING: Blue Square ELEVATION MAP

26 LEG #13 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg returns us from pastureland to the mountains, begging the question "What terrain is truly the Heart of Vermont: Mountain or Field?". This third leg is a bugger as it is just a steady climb. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Left out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the intersection of RT 4, Drive directly across the street to the transition MILEAGE: 6.6 RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

28 LEG #14 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This leg leaves Killington Ski & Sport and climbs up and up until the last 2/10 of a mile. There are many restaurants along this stretch and a few areas where the hill levels out to provide a breather to the runners. The leg transitions at the Ramshead Lodge on the right. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 2, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Turn Right onto the Killington Access Rd 4) Remain on the Killington Access Rd for 3.6 miles until you arrive at the Transition on your Right at Ramshead Lodge. MILEAGE: 4.0 RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

30 LEG #15 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION Runners accept the handoff at the underground tunnel and follow the signs back up the hill where they turn right onto East Mountain Road. This road has a number of switchbacks and is seriously downhill, with just a few uphills mixed in for fun. Watch out quads! The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 2, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Left out of TA Ramshead parking lot and make a quick right turn onto East Mountain Rd 2) Remain on East Mountain Rd until you arrive at the Transition on your Left at Killington Skyeship Lodge. MILEAGE: 4.75 RATING: Double Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

32 LEG #16 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION Teams have plenty of room to stretch their legs at this transition and runners leave this area with a relatively easy run into the town of Plymouth. Be sure to notice that Rte 100 splits from Rte 4, and Rte 100 goes to the right. The transition area is on the right at the Plymouth Town Office and Fire Department. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Left out of TA Killington Skyeship parking lot and make an immediate Right turn at the stop sign onto Rte 100/4 South 2) Travel 1 mile and turn Right onto Rte 100 South as it splits from Rte 4. 3) Remain on Rte 100 South until you arrive at the Transition on your Right. MILEAGE:6.2 RATING: Black Diamond ELEVATION MAP

34 LEG #17 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION An easy and flat run takes runners along a beautiful lake, which adds yet another dimension to the Heart of Vermont. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Rte 100 South 2) Take a left onto Billings Rd. 3) Stay to the left onto Scout Camp Rd. 4) Arriving at the Camp Plymouth transition on the right. MILEAGE: 5.3 RATING: Blue Square ELEVATION MAP

36 LEG #18 - ROAD MAP DESCRIPTION This is the leg you've been waiting for. Beginning along the shores of Echo lake and heading directly to the mountain-side finish. Runners enjoy some dirt road until they reconnect with Rte 100 and then contune right onto Rte 103, where they receive crossing guard assistance as they cross to the left side of the road. Runners turn left into Okemo's Jackson Gore resort and parade along the dramatic finish at Okemo Mountain. The route has a total ascent of ft and has a maximum elevation of 1, ft. Driving Directions: 1) Turn Right out of TA parking lot onto Scoute Camp Rd. 2) Continue straight onto Buswell Rd which turns into E. Lake Road. 3) At the intersection of Rte 100 take a left until the intersection of Rte 103 4) Turn Right onto Rte 103 for.2 miles 5) Turn Left onto Okemo Ridge Rd 6) Take your first right towards Jackson Gore Resort 7) Parking is on the Right MILEAGE: 4.9 RATING: Blue Square ELEVATION MAP
