4 Day 1 Sundance to Newcastle Route Turn Directions 0.0 From High School, turn left and follow main route all the way through town. 0.9 Pass under Interstate Turn left on State Highway 116. NO SHOULDER! 18.3 REST STOP #1 highway pullout Open 7 a.m. to 9 a.m Enter Upton City Limits 28.9 REST STOP #2 AT UPTON CITY PARK Left side of road (rest rooms provided in park) Open: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m Turn left on Highway 116 and then continue straight through town REST STOP #3 ON LEFT SIDE OF HIGHWAY CROSS WITH CAUTION. In gravel parking lot at the vacant Sagebrush Bar and Lounge in Osage Open: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m Enter Newcastle 57.6 Turn Right on Stampede Street. Go past Middle School 57.9 Left on Cooper Street At High School

6 Route miles Turns Directions Day 2 Newcastle to Custer 0 From the High School, turn left on Stampede Street. 0.1 Turn left onto Highway 16 and GO OVER THE OVERPASS Stay on main road with slight curve to the left; stay on Highway Way stop; go straight State Line enter South Dakota 16.6 REST STOP #1 pullout at entrance to Black Hills National Forest Open 7 to 9 a.m Enter Jewel Cave NP road narrows 25.7 Road shoulder returns 35.2 REST STOP #2 - At Gates Park (city park with restrooms) 36.2 Turn right onto Highway Enter Pringle If you prefer to explore Custer instead of pedaling the loop to Wind Cave NP, see alternate cue sheet REST STOP #3 At interpretive site Open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m Cattleguard Enter Wind Cave NP 54.4 Turn left onto Highway 87 (NO SHOULDER) 61.6 Enter Custer State Park 66.5 Rest Stop #4 at Blue Bell Center parking lot (vault toilets are available no porta potties needed) Open 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m Turn left onto 16A 75.0 Exit Custer State Park 77.3 Enter Custer Left on Sidney Park 77.8 Right on Wildcat Street 77.9 At School
7 Alternate Route through Custer for those deciding not to pedal the loop to Wind Cave NP Route Turns Directions 36.2 Turn right onto Highway Turn left on Gordon Street Turn left onto Michelson Trail (it is paved through Custer) 47.4 Take right fork on Michelson Trail and follow the Custer State Park Spur 48.1 Turn right onto Sidney Park 48.9 Right on Wildcat Street 49.0 At School Note: Traffic in Custer is heavy. Following the Michelson Trail through town is the best way to get around via bicycle. Stop at the Visitor s Center (on Washington Street, very close to the Michelson Trail, between 6 th and 7 th streets) for information on the area attractions, restaurants, museums, etc. Map of Downtown Custer Mickelson Trail (paved)

11 50.4 Turn left onto Coral Street 50.7 Turn right onto Park Drive 52.2 Turn right onto bike path, proceeding along golf course. You will stay on the bike path until just before Central High School Bike path splits; stay right going under the bridge and along Rapid Creek. Bike path now parallels Rapid Creek all the way to Central High School Turn left onto Mt. Rushmore Road 56.5 At Central High School Map of Downtown Rapid City High School is on upperleft. Restaurant maps available at host table or Chamber of Commerce but just head south from the school to Main Street where you ll find LOTS of restaurants.

13 Day 4 Rapid City to Spearfish - Wednesday, July 15
14 Day 4 Rapid City to Spearfish GROUP START A SPECIAL BICYCLE PARADE We have a special opportunity to have police escort out of town saving us the risk of pedaling on busy city streets. The group exit gathers at the High School t 6:30 a.m. and will take off at 6:40 a.m. Don t worry about being bunched up for long since it is an uphill climb for a good ways once we leave town. Route Turns Directions 0 Leave at 6:40 a.m. From high school, go south (turning right) onto Mt Rushmore Road. 0.2 Turn right onto Omaha Street (NO SHOULDER!!) 1.7 Omaha Street becomes West Chicago Street (good shoulder) 2.7 Cross Sturgis Road, proceed on West Chicago. 3.4 West Chicago veers right and becomes S. Canyon Road (at intersection of 44 th Street) 4.3 Exit Rapid City and begin steady climb up the canyon 13.5 Road becomes Nemo Road 17.9 REST STOP #1 Steamboat Rock Picnic Area Open 7 to 9 a.m Enter town of Nemo 22.0 Turn right onto Vanocker Canyon Road 36.3 Rest Stop #2 at smallish pullout next to road. Open 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you want to bypass going through downtown Sturgis, use alternate B route below. It turns left on Dickson Street approximately 200 yards before going under the interstate Go under Interstate and into Sturgis 40.0 At T turn left onto Highway Pass under Interstate 41.4 Turn right onto Frontage Road
15 47.8 Turn right at stop sign, going into Whitewood 48.0 Rest Stop #3 city park in Whitewood 48.3 Go over Interstate 50.1 Turn left onto Acorn Ridge 54.4 Stop sign turn left 59.3 At Stop Sign go straight 63.6 At light, go straight NOTE THERE IS A BIKE PATH STARTING T THIS POINT WHICH IS A NICE OPTION TO AVOID TRAFFIC 63.7 Enter Spearfish VOLUNTEERS: The motel for the night, the Holiday Inn, is to the north of the Interstate from this intersection At light, turn on Spearfish Canyon Road and get on the bike path. Follow the bike path as it turns north along the creek. Bike route mileage addition: Those who want a few more miles might want to take the Spearfish Canyon 66.1 When bike path comes to street (N. Canyon Street), turn onto street or, if you prefer, continue on the bike path on the other side of the street Slight right turn towards Middle School. Go through parking lot to the High School that is next door At High School Alternate Route at Sturgis to avoid busy downtown 0 Turn left onto Dickson Street before going under interstate 0.3 Continue straight, street becomes Otter St. 0.6 Turn right on Raccoon St. 0.8 Turn right onto Moose Street 2.7 Turn right onto Lazelle St (Highway 14A) 2.8 Turn left onto Whitewood Frontage Road and return to other cue sheet at milepost 41.4.

18 Day 5: Spearfish to Devil s Tower Route Turns Directions 0.0 From school, go out of parking lot on the north end. Turn left onto Hillsview Rd. 0.2 Turn right on Evans Lane 1.3 Turn left onto Highway Return to Wyoming Rest Stop #1 at state line Open: 7 a.m. to 10 a.m Pass through Beulah 18.9 Wyoming Visitor s Center on left 19.1 Turn right onto WW Hwy Turn left onto Highway 24. Note: Aladdin General Store is 0.5 mile if you go right REST STOP #2 at big pullout Open: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m Enter town of Alva no services 43.8 REST STOP #3 at big pullout Open: 9 a.m. to Noon 49.7 Enter town of Hulett. Restaurants, convenience stores, etc. Zigzag through town, staying on main route. Note: Sag support from Hulett to Devils Tower Ends at 1 p.m. or until all riders get to Hulett. If you stay in Hulett for lunch, don t expect support for the nine miles to the Tower Turn right, towards Devils Tower 60.8 At KOA Campground
