Welcome to Gimli Yacht Club The Gimli Yacht Club is a private sailing club located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. Members come to enjoy Manitoba s beautiful summers, socialize with great people, and sail as a casual or competitive sailor. This handbook is a quick reference guide to the Gimli Yacht Club. More information is located on our website This site has indepth information regarding names and contact information of key members, pertinent dates, numerous forms and other particulars. 3
Club History 2017 marks the 50 th Anniversary of Gimli Yacht Club. GYC owes its beginning to a unique set of circumstances. In 1967, Winnipeg was chosen as the site for the Pan Am Games and the most suitable location for the yachting competition was Gimli. GYC started out with its buildings donated to the Pan Am Games by Camp Shilo, the land leased from the town of Gimli, and had the wharf and finger docks built by the Pan Am Games Society. With the reputation as a safe harbour and the installation of the crane in 1984, GYC has acquired a large and active keelboat fleet along with many dingy sailors. From the handful of original members, GYC has expanded; membership is now in the hundreds. The town of Gimli has a lot to offer, with numerous restaurants, a trailer park, camp ground, several hotels and motels and many retail outlets. The town has also grown into a reputable summer destination hot spot that hosts numerous events including festivals, events, and parades. Many people deserve credit for their contribution in GYC s formative years. They include Dan Snidal, a member of the negotiating committee and first Commodore; Phil Isaac, second Commodore, Ab Alvi and Max Desmarais of the MSA, Dither Janus and Mel Parsons, secretary for three years. 4

Sailing GYC Racing When two boats are heading in the same direction, there is a great likelihood that a race is on. For keel boats, there is club racing Wednesday evenings, preceded with a skippers meeting on the deck and followed up with socializing afterward. On occasion, substitute crew members are needed; for sailors who want to learn about racing, this is a perfect opportunity to become part of a race crew and meet and socialize with other members. GYC also organizes some weekend keelboat pursuit races that include: Pursuit Race These GYC initiated races, combined with other events such as Sail West, Canada Summer Games and other fundraising regattas provide numerous opportunities for members to race locally. 7 Date Spring Tune Up Wednesday, June 6 To Hec N Back Fri./Sat. Results are also posted and awards are presented at a later time.
GYC Sailing School GYC offers Sailing lessons on-site for Optis and Lasers. Certified instructors facilitate the classes and the club provides the dinghies. All sailing courses follow the Canadian Yachting Association s Learn to Sail program standards providing, the safest and standardized instruction. Sailing school instructors are CYA certified with lifesaving and first aid certificates. The 2018 sailing school is exploring the purchase of new boats, the Zest, the Albacore, and the 420. Beginner Optimist Level *Optimist class boats are used for ages 7 to 13. This Learn to Sail Beginner level teaches basic boat and sail parts, right of way rules, docking and beaching under sail, steering and sail trim through all points of sail. Advanced Optimist Level As an introduction to racing, the goal of the Advanced level is to enhance boat handling and sailing skills for a beginning sailboat racer. 8
Laser Dinghy - Learn to Sail Program *Lasers can be 1 or 2 person dinghies for ages 14 to adult. Classes utilizing the Laser boats are offered on a separate schedule from the Optimist boats. Classes are tailored to meet the skills of each class. Please check our GYC website for more information regarding each class, pre-requisites, schedules, deadlines, registration fees and supplies needed. Registration is done on a first come basis. Early registration will ensure a spot. 9
Keelboat Sailing Programs Check the club website for links for local businesses that offer Basic Cruising Courses for practical, on-the-water training for keelboats long. Wednesday Night Racing Well over 70 GYC members gather each Wednesday to race and have a great time. The Gimli Wednesday Night Races have a 30 plus year history and is the preeminent racing series in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. There are 12 races each season that provide competitive PHRF racing followed by social gatherings. The boats are divided into 3 fleets organized by racing experience, boat speed, and whether or not you want to fly a spinnaker. All sailors are welcome. The Manitoba Sailing Association offers theory classes and also supports numerous sailing centers across the province. Their website at 10

If you are available to help, let them know, extra hands are always welcome. For 2017, the following events are planned: Wine and Cheese Meet & Greet June 2 Summer Solstice Sunset Sail & Spaghetti Dinner June 16 Canada Day Wine & Cheese Fireworks June 30 Canada Day Parade/GYC Open House July1 day GYC Celebration Banquet & Dance July 1 evening Scallywag Dinner July 7 Lake Winnipeg Foundation Activities August 11/12 Leukemia Cup Barbecue - August 18 Pot Luck Dinner September 2 Awards Dinner (November Winnipeg TBA) GYC Annual General Meeting (Spring Winnipeg TBA) Some of these events are free & some are not. There are often silent auctions and door prizes etc., too! Social events are listed on the GYC website calendar. 11
Member Responsibilities Members and guests must adhere to the GYC Code of Conduct, rules and regulations; by paying your fees you accept and agree to abide by the club s Code of Conduct. Members must pay annual fees on time or risk loss of membership and privileges. Annual membership fees must be paid before the club crane is used. Members must contribute designated hours of volunteer time each year. The number of volunteer hours depends on type of membership. This can be accomplished by participating in spring and fall work parties or by performing other work as outlined by the House and Grounds Committees. Alternatively, a member may pay a set fee, as determined by the Board, for each hour of volunteer time not contributed. 12
Members are expected to assist in keeping the club and grounds clean and tidy. (E.g. If the garbage is full, empty it. Wash any dishes you use and put them in the cupboards). All boats must be covered by 3 rd person liability insurance. Halyards, messenger lines etc. must be tied back to reduce noise. Other members may board a boat to tie back any lines causing noise. Members vessels must carry necessary equipment for their size and type as laid down in the Small Vessel Regulations of the Canada Shipping Act. GYC members are expected to comply with the provisions of the National Pleasure Craft Operator Competency Program (Have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or other Proof of competency) Names must be clearly visible on boat trailer, dinghy, and dock box. Dinghy storage is limited to regular members of GYC. Guests Individual guests or guest families are permitted to visit 3 times per year. Members are responsible for the conduct of their guests and should review proper club etiquette and rules to their guests. Pets Animals are not allowed on the deck or in the GYC buildings. Members must keep pets under control at all times. 13
Conflict Resolution It is hoped that in the collegial spirit of the club, all members demonstrate respect for one another so everyone can enjoy their summer experience as outlined in the Gimli Yacht Club Code of Conduct. As our club continues to grow, we have seen a diverse population that includes all ages and all types and categories of sailors. In the event that a conflict arises between members, the Conflict Resolution Process may be utilized to help facilitate a solution. The detailed process is the preferred method to deal with situations whereas assistance & support from the Membership Committee is available before involving the GYC Board or the Commodore. Who to Contact For any situation that occurs on the GYC property, the GYC Board of Directors/designates should be informed. Contact information is on page
Facilities The structures that house the yacht club are owned by the RM of Gimli, who in turn, lease them to the Gimli Yacht Club. Rental for the club is in the form of property taxes paid to the RM of Gimli. Much of the property of the club is owned by the provincial and federal governments. In return, the members of the club are obliged to maintain the buildings and grounds and make the venue available to promote the sport of sailing through education and various sailing events. Many of the national sailing regattas are planned a year in advance. Please check the GYC Event Schedule posted on the GYC website. On occasion, there may be restricted access to the facilities and/or equipment during special events. Members can enjoy many privileges at GYC that include kitchen amenities, showers, use of club dinghies and safety equipment. However, boat and trailer storage, use of the crane, lockers, dinghy storage, use of the tractor, etc. are conditional and need to be discussed with an executive member or designate for coordination purposes and safety practices. Much of the work necessary to maintain the grounds and buildings are performed by our members who volunteer their time. Members are encouraged to keep the facilities clean; the supply cupboard is also well equipped with various cleaning products for members to use at the club. 15
North Building Deck and Grounds The clubhouse features a huge deck with wheelchair access at three entrances. The deck is equipped with lawn chairs & picnic tables to enjoy morning coffee, meals, and cocktails throughout the summer. There are two gas barbeques located on the patio near the deck for members to use. Kitchen and Dining Room The North Building has a spacious kitchen where multiple groups can prepare meals and dine inside. The kitchen is well equipped with stoves, microwaves, cookware, dishes and utensils. The dining area is frequently used for club social events as it can hold close to 100 people. Note: The kitchen is a shared facility and as such, it is expected that all members promptly wash and put away all dishes to ensure it is ready for other members. There are three fridges to be shared by all GYC members for short term food storage. Due to limited space restrictions, members are expected to store their coolers on their boats. 16
Computer Access/Wi-Fi There are two computers in the Spinnaker Lounge for members to share for short term use. Sites related to weather, wind speeds, lake bulletins, racing sites, and coast guard are bookmarked on these computers. Our members have access to Wi-Fi and passwords are issued with membership. Fridges Members are encouraged to store all personal food on their own boats as there is limited space in the fridges. We currently have 3 fridges for short-term storage in the kitchen. Left-overs should not to be kept in the fridges. Any condiments, ketchup, mustard, etc., left in the fridges are considered club property and free for others to use. The fridges are cleaned out weekly by members who volunteer their time. Any unclaimed food will be disposed of. Please note the instructions attached to the fridge doors. Alcohol is not to be stored in the fridges. You are welcome to chill your wine and beer, but make sure you take it with you when you leave the kitchen area. Keep in mind that children have access to the fridges as well. Ice Machine Gimli Yacht Club members can access the ice machine located behind the kitchen, with access to the ice machine is through the children s room. Please bring a container for ice and clean up any cubes that may fall on the floor. On very hot days, this machine is over-utilized and on occasion, cannot keep up with the demand. You will also find an industrial sink, mops and pails in this room for you to use in the event that you need to take care of a large spill somewhere in the club. 17
Spinnaker Lounge The Spinnaker Lounge is a comfortable area for relaxing, especially on rainy days. The first members up in the morning usually start to brew coffee in the mini-kitchen. There is a mini fridge with an assortment of creams and milks. Members can purchase each individual cup of coffee using the honour system, or one can opt to join the Coffee Club ; a one-time fee, set at the start of each season. See postings in the club for volunteers who will sign you up for the seasonal fee. Coffee drinkers need to refill depleting supplies. Members are expected to wash, dry and put away their coffee cups after use. Napping on the couches or sleeping in the Spinnaker Lounge is not permitted. Washroom & Showers Inside the North Building is the main clubhouse where male and female washrooms are equipped with showers for members and members guests only. The washrooms are not to be used as change-rooms since rooms are provided in the South Building for that purpose. Members are encouraged to replenish supplies such as toilet tissue or hand-soap from the supply closet located in the hallway at the NW corner of the kitchen. Easy Access Washroom There is a gender neutral wheelchair accessible washroom located at the NW corner of the club (behind the kitchen), with a fully accessible shower as well. 18
Children s Room There is a designated space for children to unwind in the North Building. Located behind the kitchen, the children s room can be accessed through the hallway on the north side of the kitchen. Parents are responsible for providing supervision for their children. This space is furnished with couches, chairs, and a TV, VCR and/or DVD player. Occasionally, a gaming system is loaned or has been donated in the past. Various donated movies, books, and games can be found in the cabinet are available to all members. Note: The children s room is occasionally used by race officials as a jury or executive meeting room. South Building The South Building is used for multiple purposes. In the summer, the west facing front room is used as a classroom, work area, and short term storage area. Here you will find a lost and found bin, GYC dinghy supplies, freezers, sailing school classroom and office, lockers, work room and a storage area. During the winter, GYC stores its safety boats and dinghy fleet inside. There are also two GYC carts for members to transport items down the docks to their boats. Please return them back to the South Building when finished unloading so that others may use them. Change Rooms & Outdoor Showers There are male and female change rooms located in the South Building. Wet sailors returning from the sandy beach area are encouraged to shower off sandy feet before entering any building, including the change-rooms. The outdoor showers are located at the SE corner of the building, beside the ramp up to the deck. 19
Freezers The freezers in the South Building are convenient for members to freeze ice packs for their boats. Help yourself to ice by following the Bring one-take one principle. Simply bring water filled containers to the freezer to replace frozen no-name containers that you take. Clothes Dryer A clothes dryer is available for members to use. Located in the South Building, it is free of charge. Lockers Lockers are located in the back of the South Building and are available for a fee. There is currently a waiting list for lockers. Club Keys The South Building and main clubhouse (North (Building) are generally open during the days. On occasion when only a limited number of members are present, the South Building may be locked. Your club key opens these two buildings, the storage shed on the north lot, the dinghy compound, the storage cage that houses the propane tanks and GYC bike locks. Members may purchase additional club keys. The doors are usually opened by early risers and locked by the last members at the club, usually around 11:00 PM. 20
Sailing School Classroom The classroom is available for sailing instructors to hold lessons. During the designated weeks of sailing school, please be mindful of our students and allow them as few distractions as possible. This classroom is also used during racing events and as a meeting room from time to time. The sign out sheets for GYC dingy equipment is located just outside the classroom on the bulletin board. GYC Bicycles Thanks to our members who donated bicycles and those who volunteer to maintain them, GYC has a number of bicycles for members to use. The club key opens these locks. Please be sure to return them to their locked storage area. Members are encouraged to use the bike racks provided and not leave their personal bikes on the deck, patio or against the flagpoles. Be sure to report any broken or missing pieces so they may be repaired and deemed safe for use. GYC Dinghies As a club member, you have access to the Gimli Yacht Club s dinghy fleet. There are a number of Optis and Lasers to choose from. There is a sign in/sign out process and they are available to borrow as long as they are not in use by the sailing school. The sign out sheets are located outside of the sailing school room in the South Building. Volunteers maintain and inventory these boats and it is important that all parts and components are returned and placed back where they belong. Be sure to report any broken or missing pieces so they may be repaired and the boats deemed safe for use. 21
Equipment Usage GYC Crane The crane is located adjacent to Fisherman s Pier, and is only available for Club Members. There are conditions that must be met before operating the crane and there are some restrictions including weight; please speak with a club executive member for complete details on accessing this equipment. All operators must be a club member in good standing and deemed competent to use the equipment, due to insurance regulations. Prescribed safety practices must be followed during the crane operations. Pressure Washer The pressure washer is stored in the grey shed inside the north the parking lot. The club key opens the lock. 22
Tractor GYC s tractor is used to haul boats and trailers around the GYC grounds. It is stored beside the grey shed and is used for moving boats or trailers. Please speak with a club executive member for complete details on the use of this piece of equipment. Winter Storage The north & south parking lots, as well as the lawn area on the west side of the club are used for winter storage. The fee for storage is set by the club and payment is included membership renewal. Storage space on the GYC grounds is limited, so be sure to request a spot well ahead of time. The town of Gimli requests that all boats are launched by mid- June. If members are unable to comply to this deadline due to special circumstances, an extension can be requested. 23
Summer Storage Dinghies are not to be stored inside the buildings in the summer. There are set fees for storage in the dinghy compound, please contact the GYC grounds Director for information for storage information. GYC Crash & Race Committee Boats There are currently 3 GYC boats owned by GYC and are used to support sailing school activities, racing events and they are used to respond to emergencies on the lake. They are the power boats moored on the south side of Fisherman s wharf, closest to the yacht club. Members who wish to operate these motorboats should have their Pleasure Craft Operator Card and spend time with an experienced member to review particulars of each boat prior to use. Fuel is stored in the grey shed in the north parking lot. 24
Gimli Harbour Authority The Gimli Harbour Authority, (GHA), manages, operates and maintains the Gimli Harbour & Marina. This office also issues boat slips for the season as well provides temporary permits for short term stays, including launching fees. The Harbour Master s office is located north of the GYC public parking lot. The Gimli Harbour moorage rules and regulations are located on the GYC website in PDF format. GYC supports the regulation that all children on the docks must wear life jackets.
