2 1 REGULARS GM S MESSAGE Dear Members, It s been a swift 3 months into the year as we kicked-off 2018 with exciting activities. I am happy to report that these activities were carried out smoothly with Members support. With the good start, we are excited as we sail into the year. The Bi-Monthly Trophy Race was held on Saturday, 13th January. Being the first regatta of the six series race, Millennium 2 sailed well to clinch the top spot while Baby Beluga settled for second place and Angel in third. The 2nd race on Saturday, 24th March saw Todak 2 sailing into the top spot, while Baby Beluga and Millennium 2 clinched the second and third place respectively. I would like to congratulate the winners. At the end of this series, scheduled for November 2018, a challenge trophy will be awarded to the overall winner. On 24th February 2018, our club ushered in Chinese New Year, a festive widely celebrated by the Chinese with a bang. A lion dance performance, Yusheng tossing and a mini Hi Tea buffet were just some of the highlights. Members enjoyed themselves taking the Sembawang Wang Wang ride out to sea. On 10th March with boats supported by the members of the Powerboat Sub-Committee, the Powerboat Sub-Committee together with 40 members and guests set off to a Kelong off Pulau Ubin for a Kelong Seafood Lunch. At the Kelong, the children had fun catching fishes and eating their catch. After all the fun, the participants cruised leisurely back to the club. Our appreciation to those who participated in the events and we look forward to your continual support. Our first (Get-Kids-Afloat) programme for 2018 was from March is an introductory sailing course for children and youth between ages 7 to 15. Many of our National sailors, past and present, started their sailing journey with this programme. We saw a total of 17 kids taking part in our March programme, and all of them were able to showcase what they have learned to their parents with the drills that were conducted on the last day. If you missed the chance to sign up your child, we still have several upcoming courses in the month of June. We recommend to sign-up early as the slots are filling up fast! In the first quarter of 2018 as we continue to engage MINDEF personnel, we saw several MINDEF units conduct their Family Days and Cohesion activities in the club. We arranged a variety of activities from the well-loved banana boat, crowd-favorite ski tubes, jet ski rides and powerboat rides with of course some carnival activities such as the Dunking station and the Escape room. Participants of all ages had an awesome experience! Our team has a whole line up of activities for you in the upcoming months. Join us at the 3rd Bi-Monthly trophy race which will be held on 12th May 2018, and the club s signature Carnival by the Straits, Vitamin Sea & D which will be held on 2nd June this year. Do join us and take part in our sea sport rides, games and have a blast! Look out for more details and make full use of our early bird promotion. I am also pleased to announce that our plan to redevelop the clubhouse is progressing smoothly with the physical construction of the new building and multi-stack boat storage to commence towards the last quarter of We will provide more information on the project in the near future to keep all members updated on the development. In the meantime, we are revamping our club s website. With the launch of the revamped website, we will also be launching a new online booking system and a mobile app so that members can make bookings as well as update their profile anytime, anywhere at their convenience. This should take place by end of April. We indeed had a very busy start into 2018 and we are gearing up for more activities in the upcoming months. Thank you for your continuous support and enthusiasm and we hope to see you more at the upcoming events we have lined up for 2018!

4 HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS We offer something different from your ordinary indoor cohesions. Here at SAF Yacht Club, 6 DA Bn, Alpha Battery enjoyed a unique End of ICT Cohesion on 2nd March Treated to a sunny morning of banana boat, ski tube and jet ski rides, the men from the unit enjoyed all the activities catered for them. Being a small group of only 37 people, they each got to take multiple rides and had a blast of a time! 10th February 2018 was perfect for a day of outdoor activities. The jet ski, banana boat, and ski tube and powerboat rides were a hit with the men from 138SQN. They had a ball of a time dunking their mates in our dunk tank and attempting to get out of our escape room! Bigger groups are welcome too. Personnel and family members from 123SQN were treated to a morning of sea sport rides on 3rd March There was something for everyone! The younger ones had fun cracking their heads, trying to solve escape room puzzles. They also enjoyed our ever popular dunk tank. Fans of the indoor lifestlye enjoyed the air conditioned movies room before heading down for lunch! Everyone had a great Saturday, and went home with smiles on their faces. 4 5

5 HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS The conducted last March 13th16th was filled with enthusiastic young sailors! They were introduced to the basics of sailing and drills to enhance their skills in sea sports. Held on 13th January, 3 boats took part in the first Bi-Monthly Trophy Race of The course was a passage race and the race committee decided to allow participants to use their spinnaker. The wind started off light but picked up to about 6 knots towards the end of the day. Millennium 2 sailed well to clinch the top spot while Baby Beluga had to settle for second place and Angel in third spot. Based on a low point scoring system accumulated over 6 regattas with 1 discard in this series, a challenge trophy will be awarded to the overall winner at the end of the series. A lot of promising sailors enjoyed the lessons and were able to showcase what they have learned with the drills that were conducted. 6 The 2nd BTR 2018 held on 24th March kicked off to a great start with strong and consistent wind greeting our enthusiastic sailors. The format for the 2nd BTR is 3 windward and leeward races. Baby Beluga took the lead in the first race, however Todak 2 came back strong and finished first in the second and third race. This placed Todak 2 in first place overall, with Baby Beluga in second and Millennium 2 in third place. The night ended with a potluck which saw lots of great food and drinks. The next BTR is on 12th May so save the date and we hope to see everyone there. The kids who completed the course were given a certificate. Good job kids! 7 HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS The highlight of the event was the (Sembawang Wang Wang) ride. Members enjoyed a short cruise along Eastern Straits of Johor. We ushered in a pawperous 2018 with our members on Saturday, 24th February The celebrations started with lion dance, sponsored by Pyrotech Pte. Ltd. The guest of honor for the afternoon was our Captain of Power, Mr Eugene Wong. Last but not least, our lucky draw! 3 lucky guests walked away with prizes sponsored by WeeKee Catering. Congratulations to Mr. Teh Aik Hua, Ms. Chew Hui and Mr Jensen Low! What s a Chinese New Year without the traditional Yu Sheng? Members tossed the Yu Sheng as high as they could while exchanging blessings and words of prosperity. 10 We would like to thank all our guests for joining us on this prosperous afternoon. 11

8 HIGHLIGHTS Kelong Seafood Lunch Held on 10th March, this event aimed to bring together all members of the club for a sea cruise ride to the Kelong off Pulau Ubin followed by a sumptuous seafood lunch. The Powerboat Sub-Committee together with 40 members and guests set off to a Kelong off Pulau Ubin. With boats supported by members of the Powerboat Sub-Committee, this event was open to all members with or without boats. At the Kelong, the children had fun catching fishes and eating their catch. After the members and guests have enjoyed their lunch, the Powerboat sub-committee led the convoy on a leisure cruise back to the club. As we have more interesting activities planned for the coming months, do come and join us! 12

Every weekends, I will accompany my father to SAFYC to fetch my brother (Anderson) from sailing lessons. Quite naturally, I wanted to try sailing and here I am. What s the favourite aspect you like about sailing? I love to control where the boat goes to and being independent. What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club? The coaches are great and I missed the swimming pool.? Could you share about your most memorable sailing experience? My 1st gold fleet racing regatta. It was an eye opener having to sail with the best optimist sailors around. Could you share about your most memorable sailing experience? When I won a medal. What about your worst experience? My 1st racing regatta after completing B squad training. It was a thunder storm and I couldn t make my way back to shore. Fortunately, I was towed back safely. Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? Yes. I m also into soccer and swimming. How do you manage it around your curriculum of studies? I will always finish my homework before the start of any sailing activities. For you, what makes a good sailor? Strong determination, hardworking and a never give up attitude. What are your personal goals in terms of sailing currently? To improve my sailing results. Any regattas you are looking forward to participate this year? About 2 weeks ago on 14th Feb, I booked a powerboat from SAF Yacht Club for my own casual boating cruise. After cruising around Yacht Club and about an hour later, I headed to Johore straits and travelled towards the area between Pulau Seletar and Pulau Punggol Barat. The tide seemed high from my observation as I have seen a speed boat doing wake board activity in that vicinity. I moved around very slowly in the area for about half an hour and all of a sudden my boat stalled. Basically, boat was not moving, realised it was grounded. Attempted to reverse and tried other modes to come out of the situation but too bad nothing worked and I was alone stranded at sea. I immediately contacted our Yacht Club front desk staff, Ms Huda answered and I relayed my predicament and location. Shortly after, she called me back to inform Marine Operation staff Mr Syed is alerted and few minutes later she called me to inform Syed is on the way. QUARTERLY STAR EMPLOYEE Congratulations to Mr Suhaimi as he was selected for the Quarterly Star Employee for the period of November 2017-Jan Keep up the good work! Ms. Huda, Front Desk Angel & Mr. Syed, Marina Staff Another 15 minutes passed by and Syed spotted my boat and approached. He rendered support to get me and my boat out of the unfortunate circumstance. Eventually the boat was freed from the sand bank and we sailed back with own power. No problem with the OBMs. Wish to express Mr Syed s mark of experience and his knowledge of the situation was commendable and the tiring manual hard effort to push the craft by wading in the sea was unimaginable. I wish to take this opportunity to show my appreciation and to thank Ms Huda for being alert, responsive and maintaining comms throughout the episode and notably a special mention to Mr Syed for his true valour and commitment, in spite of his health, to bring back crew and boat safely to shore.
