Commodore Lou Ickler On Friday, May 13 we held a Member's Forum in the longhouse. In spite of a date that spells superstitious trouble, the meeting went very well. The result was a list of thirty-eight items that the members brain-stormed for the Board to consider. This list was ed to all members on Monday, May 23. Please look at the list and if you have suggestions to add them to KYC@kaneoheyachtclub.com. All suggestions will be considered by the Finance and Planning committee and then the Board of Directors. Among the suggestions were several projects that are currently in progress, such as paving the parking lots (in three phases), the refurbishment of the Ladies bathroom and North bulkhead repairs. What was great about the meeting was that some ideas that had never been talked about came up, such as solar water heating for the bathrooms. This is an idea that could save us money and provide better hot water - we will get estimates and advice on whether it will work in a clubhouse environment. A fish cleaning area was also proposed - if you have ideas on how to do this in a convenient and clean way us. Another suggestion was to make better use of the "back 40" in the SE corner of the club - maybe a culvert in the ditch with paving over it would work. A Nominating Committee was approved by the Board at the meeting on Tuesday, May 24. The members are Rick Osborne, Chairman, and Victor Lozano, Mark Denzer, Tom Valentine, and Bill Atherton. I am very pleased with this committee which I feel represents a broad spectrum of the club's members. If any member wants to be considered for nomination to an office at the annual meeting in November, contact any member of the committee to request an interview. We need volunteers for the Board and this is a good way to serve your club. Finally, the Board approved a change to the Rules & Regulations of the Club, adding paragraph Y. The changes are intended to clarify the way our Bylaws are interpreted and to make sure all members are treated equally. Please take a look at them, they are included on page 11. Have a great June. See you July 8 at the Special Membership Meeting. Vice Commodore Mark Logan I borrow a quote from writer Mark Twain to illustrate my current circumstances, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated! I ll take this opportunity to quash the rumor that has been surfaced by members too numerous to mention. I am not deploying to Afghanistan with the Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) and have full intentions of carrying out my duties as Vice Commodore for the full term as established in KYC s Bylaws. I believe recent media releases announcing the possible mobilization and deployment of the HIARNG s largest formation, the 29th Brigade, may have contributed to the formulation of this rumor, however I m not a member of that unit. I would be honored to serve with the proud Lava Brigade as they go into their third such mobilization, but my responsibilities lie in readying that unit for its wartime mission. Please mark your calendars when you receive the forthcoming announcements for another Friday night themed dance party and the second KYC Casino Night scheduled for late June and August, respectively. Previous iterations of these events were well attended and enjoyed by all. Your hard working Entertainment Committee Chairperson, Lucrecia Fry, makes every effort to improve these occasions to ensure the maximum enjoyment of our members and their guests. The long-awaited 1st phase of the repaving of KYC s parking areas is scheduled to get underway in July. Your board of directors and club management are coordinating with the contractor to program the work so it has minimum impact to club activities. Additionally, our ever capable House & Grounds Committee Chairperson, Bill Bachman, is preparing to repair or replace the mooring rings along the South Bulkhead. Further, he is planning to formulate a volunteer work party to tackle another grounds cleaning to rid ourselves of rubbish accumulating in and immediately adjacent to KYC property. Finally, I d like to thank Staff Commodore Spotswood Robertson for his offer to donate 6 Norfolk pines to the club for use as future Christmas trees. The Honolulu Police Department will make a presentation on crime prevention and the Neighborhood Security Watch Program in conjunction with the Fishing Fleet Meeting in the Long House on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. This is one of several steps your board of directors is taking to improve the safety and security at KYC. The presentation is open to the entire membership, and I Rear Commodore Jamie Thompson On the last weekend of April, Troubador represented KYC in the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup One hosted by WYC. Our goal was to beat last year's winner (Fins) and bring the Cup to KYC. While we did beat Fins by one point for second place, Ikaika walked away with the trophy for Hawaii Yacht Club winning 5 of 6 races over the two day regatta. Six Hawaii yacht clubs competed, including entries from Lahaina Yacht Club and Nawiliwili Yacht Club. Jesse Andrews did a fantastic job driving for KYC, assisted by Isaac Gillette calling the wind and Bill Leary on tactics. Thank you to Ray Sanborn for representing KYC with Troubador. Mahalo to the rest of the crack KYC crew: Bob Ale, Rick Osborne, Victor Lozano, and Marc Barra. We look forward to competing in the Hawaii Sir Thomas Lipton One Design Challenge Cup in October. By the time you read this, the 2011 Road to Rolex Clinic will be history! KYC bid and was selected to run one of eight US SAILING Road to Rolex Clinics. Rolex sponsors the clinics as stepping stones to entering the International Women's Keelboat Championship, to be held at the Rochester Yacht Club August 29-September 1. KYC had 34 wahine attending the clinic, led by US SAILING coach Allie Bleecher, the 2010 Quantum College Sailor of the Year. The sailing was intense on J/24 and Cal 20 - new crew mixes, unfamiliar boats, spinnakers and 28 mph gusts. Allie was a great coach and we welcome her back to KYC whenever she has the opportunity to visit. Mahalo to the J/24 and Cal 20 fleets for allowing us to borrow their boats, the I-14 fleet for PRO/RC of the mini-regatta on Sunday, to Jen Warnock who was our second coach and to Leslie Foster and her hui of volunteers for running the clinic. We also owe a big mahalo to the Hawaii Sailing Foundation for the scholarships to 20 Hawaii women enabling them to attend this clinic. I know this made the difference for several ladies who wanted to attend but weren't sure if they could afford the clinic. Thank you to Dee Darby for championing this idea with the Foundation. In other KYC news, IRF Series B wrapped up on May 14 with Bob Ale winning the series on Cash Flow. Congratulations Bob Ale and team! Be sure to check out the NOR for the June Summer Circuit at KYC. Traditionally the most well attended series at KYC, the IRF Summer Circuit will run June 5, 12 and 26 this year - expect fun both on and off the water. I hear we may use gates this year so pileups are less likely to occur at the leeward mark. Anyone who has seen me drive around the Continued on pg 4 Continued on pg 4 3

Port Captain Bob Hurd Aloha, We have a summer special. A wet slip has become available on E pier as a slip-hopper special. We will be renting the slip on a first-come first-served basis for two week periods during the summer. Members will be charged slip fees as if they had been assigned the slip ($3.40 per foot). Contact me to be placed on the list for your two week vacation. We continue to have members concoct shore power cord adapters from household extension cords. These are potentially dangerous. Consider that the cords are only about a foot above sea level, are located in an area that is highly vulnerable to spray conditions, and that sea water is a good conductor. Stay safe, have fun, and I ll see you on the water. Vice Commodores Report Continued encourage all of you to attend. I think you ll be quite surprised at how simple it is when a group of concerned members makes a coordinated response toward reducing or eliminating a threat to our safety and security. I look forward to seeing all of you in, on, or near the water very soon. Rear Commodores Report Continued leeward mark will be doubly thankful. A heads up to IRF boat owners: Right on the heels of the Summer Circuit, IRF D-1 on July 9, 2011 will also be race #3 of the Wahine racing series! There are a few requirements to be aware of: A wahine must be at the helm at all times. No male is allowed to touch the helm while racing. For the KYC IRF D-1 Regatta your crew shall be at least 50% female or consist of at least 4 females, whichever number is lower. If you need assistance locating confident wahine drivers and crew, boy are you in luck! 34 ladies have just completed the Road to Rolex racing clinic... June will also bring more classboat racing, a fishing fleet fishing tournament, ORF #6 single handed, a golf fleet outing and more Thursday night bulkhead races! Check the message boards, contact your fleet captain or the office if you have questions or want to get involved. Children under the age of 10 are not allowed in the Longhouse and the lawn area on the bay side of the Longhouse after 6:30pm on Thursday evenings when the bar is open and dinner is being served. We are looking for a few volunteers to be on a committee to advise the club on matters relating to communications with members and the public. We will be discussing what type of information should be available in Telltales, s, social media such as Facebook and Twitter and on our web site. We are looking for anyone interested in helping us get the word out most effectively. We are especially in need of someone knowledgeable about web sites and Information Technology. Everyone is busy so most meetings will be virtual to minimize time required and allow members maximum flexibility. For more information, contact Lou Darnell at ldarnell@comtelhi.com or

Junior Sailing Jesse Andrews On Saturday, May 7th, KYC had 11 KYC sailors participate in the Slim Lambert HYSA #2 at Waikiki Yacht Club. The conditions were challenging at times with passing rain squalls and moderate trade winds. We had all six of our new El Toros out for the first time with no problems except excessive speed! Richard Wollenbecker ended up with all 1st and two 2nd places winning overall in El Toros. Zachary Kaan tied for 3rd in El Toro B with Aaron Kiyotki followed by Leah Ford in 6th place. Kai, Kiana and Kahealani Heitzman finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in El Toro C. Even after numerous capsizes, Kahealani finished every race and showed great perseverance and determination ending the regatta one point ahead of her closest competitor. Rounding out the awards was Nicolas Hunt in 2nd place on the inside course sailed in the treacherous Ala Wai Canal only one point out of first. Thanks to all the kids and parents who helped load and trailer all the boats back and forth across the island. We also have El Toros available for Friday night races that start at 6pm. Show up by 5:30pm if you plan to use a KYC El Toro. Our next HYSA regatta will be at Hickam Air Force Base s Pacific Yacht Club on June 18th. Summer sailing classes along with tennis and swimming classes all start June 6th and the information can be found at There are also application forms on the web at Leah Ford heads out to the race course during the Slim Lambert Regatta. Spring sailing classes ended May 14 with the traditional trip to the sandbar. There were plenty of musubis to go around. Cal 20 Fleet Leslie Foster Aloha from the Cal 20 fleet, It has been a quieter month amongst the Cal 20 fleet, with only series G at the end of April & series H in early May. Please visit the Class boat section in Results for the standings of these regattas, and to see who to thank for running race committee. Mahalo to John Thorne for managing the posting of results. Series G was one of our best this year with 12 boats on the line. It was great to see Hanahou out again mixing it up with the fleet. Redloh Pils & Oink were fully crewed by members of the UH Sailing Team, and they had a blast! I love seeing UH sailors getting into the community sailing scene. It has helped having local kids who come with sailing backgrounds, Zach Denzer, Laura Hughes & Fizz Foster, on the team. Series H was our single class boat race in May, and Junior sailor LindseyAndrade got out with John Thorne on Calypso, increasing her big boat experience. Yes, the Jrs., and even some of the UH sailors, think of Cal 20s as big boats... it took me awhile to stop getting a chuckle or two out of that one. Mahalo to our IRF members who came out to perform their race committee obligations. Extra big mahalo to those fleet members and supporters who fill in the pukas! May closed with more support from the Cal 20 fleet. Numerous fleet members offered the use of their boats as the back up fleet for the May women s Road to Rolex Clinic. The clinic, which is normally run in J 22s with spinnakers, had the possibility of being split into 2 fleets: Cal 20s non-spinnaker & J 24- spinnaker. We ultimately utilized T-II, Oink & Vampire Gas on Saturday, which was a good beginner step for some of the participants. After a little TLC on one of the loaned J 24s, Sunday was all Js, enabling those beginners to push their envelope. Mahalo Nui to the I 14 fleet members- Todd Ericksen, Doug White, Andy Bates, Tom Pochereva & Elise Leroux, for covering our race committee needs. Mahalo again and again to the Cal 20 owners. Photos: Kai Andrade Thirty-four ladies participated in the Road to Rolex Clinic at KYC Rigging session at the Bulkhead The ladies on Actuation were first around the windward mark, followed closely by Cash Flow and Toy Boat.. Chalk talk with US Sailing Coach Allie Bleecher 5 The Clinic wrapped up with a 3 race regatta. 1st place went to Christin Shacat and crew on Cash Flow.

Around the Club Transpac came early for Bo Wheeler and crew L-R: Pierre Loubet, Kerry Deaver, Bo Wheeler and Don Brown. Maka oi oi arrived in style May 14. New KYC member William Humphrey came in to help entertain Mothers' Day goers at KYC. Thanks Bill for donating your time and talent entertaining members on Mothers' Day. Bill is not only an expert on his guitar, but with a superb voice he serenaded us with Hawaiian Songs. He is also an expert in slack key guitar. BRIDGE FLEET BONANZA Every Wednesday night four or five tables of bridge enthusiasts gather in the "back room" of the Longhouse and, for the most part, it's a pretty sedate occasion. It's The Frog who makes things interesting. Week after week, those who wish to participate drop a quarter into his hungry mouth. As soon as a participant bids and makes a grand slam, The Frog disgorges his bounty. Sometimes he holds only a few weeks' worth of quarters but sometimes months pass without a winner. Such was the case recently when Mary Lou Lufkin and Jim Drorbaugh, both participants, were partners. They bid and made their grand slam when The Frog was absolutely bloated with treasure. Well done! Congratulations to you both. There is a difference. 6

Fishing Fleet Bill Atherton - Fleet Captain Hanapa a Fishing Fleet Summer's coming upon us and now is the time for the Fishing Fleet to come alive. Remarkably, the fishing is getting better, the weather is getting warmer, and I imagine our fishing fleet members are getting restless. This is a perfect storm for Fishing, Fun, Fellowship, and Family! We finally had our 2nd FF Tournament May 14th and 15th, a week later than planned due to inclement weather. We had nine eager fisherman competing. The fish actually participated this time. Craig Lemquist came in with a 32lb bull mahimahi to let the club know that he is in contention. Joe Kirby appeared on the dock Sunday morning to find crew walking the docks at 6:00am with a case of Heineken in hand. They landed a 23.5lb bull mahimahi to get Joe on the board. Yours truly came in with three mahimahis, however, I was late so no weigh. It wouldn t have mattered much, but I was disappointed that they wouldn t give the FF Captain a 10 minute reprieve At least I tried. Paul Weisenfeld came in with a 117lb Ahi to firmly establish himself as the top fisherman so far. Don t be discouraged as we have a long way to go. Now that the weather is getting better and fuel prices are coming down, we would like to top the 15 boats entered last year as a tournament high. So I hope to see you all at the next FF Tournament the weekend of June 4th. We will be having a FF Meeting on Monday June 6, at 6:00PM in the Longhouse. Please bring your favorite pupus. We will have a guest speaker from HPD to discuss ways to keep our theft problem down. All KYC members are welcome to come and participate. On July 2nd we will kick off our Summer of Fun with our American Cancer Society Fundraiser. We want to continue the good work that Charlie Schmucker has done in the past and have the FF raise money and awareness for the Relay For Life Cancer Fundraiser. Since our own Beau Barker is heading the Kailua Chapter, we want to make her proud of us. I am sure everyone has been affected by the terrible disease in some form or fashion. This is the time to come support our efforts to find a cure. The FF encourages everyone to come and bring a pupu, and we will supply the entertainment. Everyone will be asked to donate $10.00 per person, which ALL goes to the Society.. The Waiahole Ditch Band and special guests will provide the entertainment, and we should have a great time. It is the 4th of July weekend, and we expect a great showing, so PLEASE mark your calendars. Save the Dates: Captain s Meeting June 3rd 5:00PM FF Tournament June 4th and 5th FF Meeting June 6th 6:00PM FF Fundraiser July 2nd 6:00PM Ladies Tennis Round Robin The once a month gathering of KYC women tennis players was the usual enjoyable event with 15 players attending and two more joining the group for a wonderful potluck lunch. Play was spirited and laughter was heard on both courts. The salads, sandwiches and desserts were the perfect ending to the gathering. This event is open to all KYC women tennis players, of all levels, and is held the third Friday of the month. Call the office for contact information. Hanapa a Captain Bill Monday, June 6, :00 PM in the Longhouse Kaneohe Yacht Club s Fishing Fleet has graciously granted the KYC membership a place on their agenda. The Honolulu Police Department will be making a presentation on crime prevention and the Neighborhood Security Watch Program. All interested members are invited to attend this informational meeting as part of our effort to improve the safety and security of our club. 8

Tennis Fleet Donlei Darnell As the South Tennis Court repair has become a polarizing issue at KYC, Tennis Fleet members want to find a mutually satisfactory solution for increasing dry storage and maintaining the two courts. Some are questioning why we need two courts. For people who don t play tennis or participate in tournaments, this is an appropriate question. It s similar to the situation for those who don t race sailboats wondering why a committee boat and float boat are necessary. It is possible to conduct races without both, but not practical. The tennis courts contribute to the stated purpose of KYC to enable other recreational activities and to provide a meeting place for social gatherings. Not everyone will appreciate that the Tennis Fleet is open and welcoming to all members and that most of its members are active in yachting and boating. We look forward to the scheduled July 8th Special Membership meeting so that all can become fully informed. The Tennis Fleet wants nothing more than to continue being a vibrant part of our club and inviting all to enjoy the recreational and social activities. The annual Tom Collins Memorial Tournament conducted in May consisted of full day of tennis for players and spectators who came to watch. The Tom Collins event was started in honor of a former KYC member known for sportsmanship and athletic ability. In the beginning of the tournament, winners were the ones who showed the greatest sportsmanship, remembered June Williams whose name is engraved on the trophy twice. Demonstrating sportsmanship is a characteristic we always expect, but now the tournament recognizes the top women s doubles team and the top men s doubles team. This year s honors went to Chickadee Moniz and Sue Ashford, Rob Rietow and Paul McCully. Second place winners were Betsy Denzer and Cindy Siok, Aaron Phillips and Greg Siok. Several players wore the new KYC Tennis Fleet t-shirts. Of the original 80+ shirts only a few remain and they are available for $15 apiece call Donlei if you d like to get one too. T-shirt sales also raised $200 for the Kokua for Japan drive. The evening of the tournament, Tennis Fleet members enjoyed a potluck feast of Mexican cuisine complete with Mexican music provided by DJ Matt Darnell, who later switched it up for some after dinner dancing. The theme for the evening was further enhanced by a great job of decorations done by Linnea Brooks, Cathy Brigham and Sally Bogert. They really did a great job! said Donlei, who was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Fleet members also heard from Tom Collins Jr. who shared how much the Tennis Fleet meant to his father and members shared some of their fond memories of Tom as well. I thought this was just a small group of tennis players who played and shared some beers, said Collins Jr. I didn t realize it was such a big event. Other news is Fleet Captain Donlei Darnell has arranged for the Tennis Fleet to be a Welcome Team for the Transpac Race in mid-july. The fleet will be sponsoring sailboat O Canada from Victoria BC. The Tennis Fleet welcomes new members and reminds everyone that Saturday and Sunday mornings are great time to play and/or be introduced to the sport. Starting around 8:00 to 8:30 and going until 11:00 or so. And don't forget that children can be signed up for summer lessons a great activity and learning opportunity for our keiki. During the fleet s annual tournament and weekend at Makaha, several groups went on hikes and enjoyed them so much that they have started a Hiking Fleet, going out once a month or so. If interested, call or Linnea Brooks for more information. More events are planned this summer, beginning with the King Kamehameha Day tournament followed by a catered dinner at KYC June 11. Watch your for details. Women's 1st place, Chickadee Moniz and Sue Ashford Men's 1st place, Rob Rietow and Paul McCully Paul Mc Cully 2nd Place teams, Greg Siok and Aaron Phillips, Betsy Denzer and Cindy Siok Greg Siok taking a good whack at the piñata Lou Darnell focuses on the incoming ball. 12 Be it resolved by the Board of Directors of the Kaneohe Yacht Club that the following policy shall be adopted and inserted into the permanent Policies, Rules and Regulations of the Yacht Club as Section Y, under Article I, General Policies, as follows: Y. CONVERSIONS AND TRANSFERS OF MEMBERSHIPS AND SLIP PRIVILEGES BY SPOUSES. The Board of Directors of Kaneohe Yacht Club has determined that there has been significant confusion and lack of clarity and consistency about the application of the Bylaws to issues relating to the rights of Members and their spouses upon the death and other issues of transfer of memberships, and thus has determined to adopt a policy to provide fair and consistent application of the bylaws. I. Interpretations of the Bylaws. Article II, Section 5. CHANGE OF MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATION. The Bylaws define a Life Family member as the spouse of a deceased Life Member, or a deceased Senior member in good standing for 10 years immediately prior to the member's death. A Family member is defined as the spouse of a deceased member who has been a member for less than 10 years. Both these classifications terminate on remarriage. A Family Member or Life Family member may wish to apply to be elected as a Senior or Life Member. This request requires an "election" in the same manner as any applicant for such status, except that owing to the prior membership of the deceased spouse and the Life Family or Family member applicant, the fees and member cap limitations are not applicable. In processing any such application, the Board shall consider the past participation of the applicant, deceased spouse and family in the life of the Club as well as other matters normally considered by the Board in membership elections. However, the Board finds that only one such fee waived election should ever be permitted with respect to a single life membership. Since there is no time limit in the bylaws, this application can be made at any time after the death of the original member, and requires only the signature of the life family or family member requesting election, since the original member is deceased at the time of the application. Article II Section 6. The Board of Directors finds that Article II Section 6 of the bylaws was intended to apply to current transfers during the lifetime of members and their spouses, from a member to the member's spouse. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, such transfers might be caused by divorce between the parties, by incapacity, or absence of one or the other party for extended periods. Transfer of a membership does not change any right associated with that Membership. Thus, by way of example, transfer of a Life membership to a spouse does not convert the Life membership to a membership based on the life of the spouse instead of the life of the purchasing member, although the spouse has a right to make applications to the club as set forth below. The Board finds that the requirements for Transfer of a Membership have no application under Section 6 of Article II to issues related to conversion of memberships from one class to another under other paragraphs of Article II. In particular, the Board finds that under the definitions of Family Member and Life Family Member in Article II Section 1 of the bylaws, the right of a spouse member to request conversion to status of a Family Member or Life Family Member arises following the death of the original Member spouse and does not require the signature of the deceased spouse. Normally such conversion will be permitted if the Membership is in good standing and if the Spouse Member is of good moral character. Further, the requests by a Family member to be elected as a Senior member, or by a Life Family Member to be elected as a Senior or Life Member under Article II Section 5 of the bylaws is normally made after the original member is deceased and does not require signature by the deceased spouse. II. Policies and procedures intended to provide consistency in application of Bylaws upon the death of a member. Under the bylaws of the yacht club, Life Family members and Family members are permitted to hold dry storage spaces in the yacht club and to participate in the wet slip and dry storage area waiting lists, but only Senior members and Life members are permitted to hold wet slips. This policy is intended to deal not only with membership issues, but to provide consistent reasonable rules for disposition of slips following death of a member: 1. When a member dies who holds a dry storage space or a place on a waiting list, the spouse of the member may make a request to become a Family member or Life Family member within 90 days of the date of death, and if the request is approved, the dry storage space and/or place on a waiting list shall be transferable to the new Family or Life Family member. 2A. When a Life member dies who holds a wet slip, the spouse of the member may request conversion of the spouse membership to Life Family membership. If the request is approved, the new Life Family Member may make a request to be elected to a Life membership within six months of the date of death of the original member. The election to Life Membership is discretionary with the Board. If this latter request is also approved, and if the original Life Member held a wet slip, the wet slip shall be transferable to the new Life member. Both requests may be made simultaneously. 2B. When a Senior member dies who holds a wet slip, the spouse of the member may request conversion of the spouse membership to a Family membership, or if qualified, a Life Family membership. If the request is approved, the new Family Member or Life Family Member may make a request to be elected to Senior membership within six months of the date of death of the original member. The election to senior membership is discretionary with the Board. If this latter request is also approved, and if the original Senior member held a wet slip, the wet slip shall be transferable to the new Senior Member. Both requests may be made simultaneously. 3. During the interim period the spouse member may keep a boat in the wet slip or dry storage space, or retain a position on a waiting list, as the case may be, pending determination of the above matters. 4. In the event the above requests or applications are not approved, the spouse of the deceased member shall have up to six months from the date of death to remove a boat from a dry storage space, and up to one year to remove a boat from a wet slip, provided that slip or storage space fees are current and continue to be paid. 5. The above deadlines do not apply to spouses of deceased members except to the extent they wish to retain slip or storage space privileges or retain a place on a waiting list held by the deceased member. 6. Upon the death of a member, an Officer of the Club or the Manager of the Club shall meet personally with the spouse of the deceased Member as soon as reasonably possible and shall fully explain and provide a copy of this policy to the spouse, and provide the spouse a calendar of time deadlines that must be met to retain slip privileges. 12

Assigned maintenance staff to make sure the water is balanced all the time with higher chlorine content for the summer. COMMODORE S REPORT: 1. The Commodore announced that there were five members who wished to address the board, each of which would have five minutes. 2. Howard Green discussed the Declaration of Policy on By Laws which provides clarification of the existing by laws. A motion was proposed by Lou Darnell seconded by Jamie Thompson, and the Declaration of Policy was approved by the board. 3. Joe Starr addressed the BoD and made a request in the name of the Staff Commodores that the club host a Membership Forum to better inform the members at large on issues facing the club. After discussion of the request, a motion was made by Lou Darnell and seconded by Matt Darnell to approve the Membership Forum. The BoD voted and approved the motion. 4. John Myrdal, addressed the BoD, pointing out that the Board had taken a vote to repair the Tennis Court but the contract had not been executed, he urged that a person should be assigned to execute the contract. The Commodore clarified that the approval had been at a cost of 17,000 but that the asbestos had changed the situation and there was now increased costs that had to be taken into consideration. 5. Brett Phillips advised the Board of his intention to get bids from three contractors this year to repair the bulkhead. The project is ready to go and may take 30 days and can be done before the FY ends. An amount of $30,000 had been authorized for the bulkhead. The Commodore clarified that the money had been passed to the Tennis Court repair under the mistaken belief that Brett was not championing the bulkhead anymore. Brett added that Court is in the wrong place and the club should not spend more than enough to fix for a few years until it can implement an overall strategy. 6. Rick Osborne presented a membership survey, taken approximately 5 years ago, showing what he called relatively low support for the tennis courts and added that he wants to leave to a membership meeting to decide whether to spend additional money on court repairs. He felt that the motion to repair was being rammed through without due consideration. He proposed that the vote on the court repair be left to the membership meeting and he asked that a member of the BOD move to defer the issue to a membership meeting. No motion was presented. 7. Greg Lelesch from the Financial Planning Committee discussed funding for Capital Improvements. Greg mentioned an attractive bid for paving that may allow more work this time. There is placeholder for G pier, yet there is a need to rethink G pier due to unforeseen and higher cost needs; that money could be spread to other projects. Greg said that there was money available to do all other projected capital improvements, to include repairing the Tennis court at the higher cost. 8. Clay Hutchinson spoke to the board about his evaluation of the maintenance work needed at G pier. The pier was installed in two phases, one in 1987 and another in Clay says phase 2 is good for several more years but we do need to do phase 1. The concerns are rotted wood, rusted steel, misalignment; and possible trip hazards that will get worse. The estimated cost to repair Phase 2 is $324,000 including labor and materials but does not include disposal of materials, or electric work. Disposal could be done by offering free wood. The work could take six 18 weeks work time. Additional bids from local companies should be sought, albeit they are unlikely to beat this offer from a mainland outfit with excellent reputation. This is a fixed price. In Clay s estimate, one more year is the most that repairs can be delayed as there are problems now. He foresees starting work at the at far end and needing 100 linear feet of dock at a time and associated slips, approx 12 boats displaced at a time. This is a very large amount of money that will be a challenge to meet; it may take all our capital improvement funds. 9. Greg Lelesch added that we only have 180,000 budgeted towards these repairs which now will cost 324,000 and so we will need a special way to pay for this. Nevertheless he said that the Tennis court repair, projected parking lot paving and the ladies room can be done this year. 10. Matt Darnell made a motion to increase the authorized capital expenditure of the Tennis Court repairs from $17,000 to 47,000 and go

forward with the repair; this was seconded by Lou Darnell. The motion failed. 11. Lou Darnell proposed a motion to go ahead with the Tennis Court repairs but to do so at a lower cost by not repairing the fence surrounding the court thus spending $35,780 instead. Matt Darnell seconded the motion. The motion was approved. VICE COMMODORE S REPORT: The Fishing fleet will hold a meeting on guidelines for security of property at the club. Go fishing fleet! 9. Race Committee: a. Andrew Meade passed out a spreadsheet with PRO & RC assignments filled through a good part of the year. We need a PRO for IRF on 5/14 but otherwise he has a PRO identified for almost every race through July. We still need RC & float boat crew, so don't be complacent. b. Cy Gillette - back in the water and running smoothly - motor fixed, welding complete, re-painted inside & out, & misc tweaks. Thank you Clark. Some additional work is scheduled possibly this month including replacing the carpet. [Thanks again to Ray Sanborn for saving the day with his KK float boat.] c. Float Boat - a Moth hit the engine during the Moth Regatta. Parts ordered. We need to take the float boat out of the water anyway to paint. Looks like we have a good window between April 17 through May 14. Clark Fremgen to coordinate with M&Ms, etc. d. Request to have two more sets of anchor lines & bridles made. Clark to make them. e. Request to purchase a new handheld anemometer. The one typically on Cy Gillette has walked off. Jamie to check budget. [Anemometer has re-appeared.] f. Request from the fleets: when the awnings are replaced on Cy Gillette, please pick a more visible color! Blue would be fine. g. John Thorne asks all PROs to review the end of race procedures for stowing the boats and gear. Things that you may not know that need to happen include put away the boats properly with engines out of the water, marks deflated & hanging to dry in the storage locker, certain parts put back into the race committee room filing cabinet. John & Andrew Meade to develop a back-to-back checklist that can be laminated and left on the boat. 10. Moth Regatta Report (via from Tom Pochereva): A very BIG M A H A L O to you all for your part in helping this regatta get over the little bumps and on its way to great racing over 3 days and the very neat Slalom Race. The sailors are all very enthusiastic. We can expect their letter thanking us and requesting a repeat for next year along with a proposal to bid for the 2013 Worlds. All the fine work from the entire KYC team enabled the regatta to run smoothly and produced a great event for the sailors. 7 races on the first day broke the record for number of races on one day. The forecast for 7 mph turned into a mph day and was great! KYC has held a US International Moth class Regatta in 2009, 2010 and The Moth class is requesting that we submit a proposal to host their 2012 US National Championships and subsequently the 2013 World Championships. While, KYC must submit a proposal to the US International Moth fleet, they are indicating that they have been very happy with the past three regattas that KYC has hosted for them. STAFF COMMODORE S REPORT: None DIRECTOR S REPORTS: 1. Ned Dewey The design of the new Ladies room has begun and is taking place under a collaborative effort between two individuals, both have good ideas. 2. Dan Ford We have new El Toros Jessie is working on some mast adjustment. These will be used for regattas only. His instructors are all lined up. 3. Lou Darnell - Mark Andrade will update the current KYC website as needed, and in what refers to changes, we will take a long range view. We need a new website but not now as the present one is serviceable. KYC manager is exploring opportunities, but for now the website is under control. Mark Andrade is charging $40 an hour for his website work which will keep it going until we design our overall strategy. The Communications and IT Committee continues to look at how to improve communications and is looking for an IT person. There are six volunteers on the committee.
