China University ofm ining & Technology, Beijing , China) Abstract: The field capacity taking into consideration of soil dep th is an important param eter for the water balance model and the assessm ent of the grow ing conditions of the crop s, the imp rove2 ment of eco2environm ent and conservation p roject in the Loess Plateau region. In this research, a method based on large scale water balance model and supported by GIS technique was introduced to calculate this parameter. The m ap of soil texture of the Loess Plateau is attained by linking the soil type map and the soil p roperty database. This p rocess involves the soil particle classification transform ation from international system to US system. The field capacity in 1 m eter soil dep th is estim ated by the pedotransfer functions and the soil texture inform ation. The effective soil dep th is calculated through the soil texture information and vegetation inform ation. B ased on field capacity in 1 meter soil dep th and effective soil dep th, the effective field capacity is estimated. It shows that the field capacity varies largely in the Loess Plateau Region, the general tendency is that it decreases from southeast to northwest, around mm in the northwest but mm in the Hetao area; in the m iddle part, it is around mm excep t for the forest area ( mm), the highest is in the southeastern part, it is around mm in most areas and as high as mm in forest area.
