3 TRAINING COURSES AND PROGRAMS RUN IN SEASON 2016/17 Discover Sailing Day 23 October 2016; 22 people participated in Dinghy, Hansa and keelboat sailing. 60% conversion into membership. Start Sailing 1 & 2 Sunday mornings; 9am 12noon, from 6-November through to Xmas. 19 participants; 17 kids & 2 adults. Better Sailing Friday afternoons; 5pm 7pm from 14-October through to Xmas. Ten participants; all progressing from Start Sailing. Start & Better Racing Friday afternoons; 5pm 7pm from 14-October through to Xmas. Six participants; all progressing from Better Sailing. Powerboat Handling July 2016; with 9 participants successfully completing the onwater and off-water components. Tackers 1, 2 & 3 (The Mobile Boatshed) GLYC hosted The Mobile Boatshed in the September, Christmas and Easter school holidays; 30 participants in total. Adult & Teen Learn to Sail (The Mobile Boatshed) GLYC hosted The Mobile Boatshed in the September, Christmas and Easter school holidays; 14 participants in total. Winter Sprint Series Sprint series in the bay, conducted the 3 rd Saturday, 11am 2pm across June September; consistently 8 boats racing. Division Cool Sunday mornings; 9am 12noon, post Xmas / New Year break, with consistently 25 sailors participating. Vic Youth Catamaran Program April; involving twelve GLYC youth and two GLYC mentors with on-water and off-water catamaran coaching. Minnow Travellers Series (GLYC weekend) April; novice and advanced coaching plus racing, for nine GLYC and eleven Melbourne minnow sailors. School Sailing Program Paynesville Primary School Year 6 completes 10 hours of the Tackers 1 program in Term 1 and again in Term 4. Summer Sprint Series Sprint series in the bay, conducted the 1 st and 3 rd Friday, 5pm to sunset, across January March; consistently 12 boats racing. Good Friday Appeal Raymond Island Sail 14 April 2017; 30 kids in pacers circumnavigated Raymond Island raising money for the Royal Children s Hospital.

Courses within our Discover Sailing Program are run by members who are qualified Australian Sailing Instructors and supported by a team of GLYC volunteers, providing on-water and off-water support. In season 2016/17 we have also been fortunate to welcome a number of guest instructors for the Tackers School Holiday programs, School Sailing, Minnow and Youth Catamaran programs hosted by GLYC. 8 GLYC - DISCOVER SAILING CENTRE ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTION TO JUNIOR / YOUTH SAILING Junior and Youth Sailing is gaining new heights on the Gippsland Lakes, with thanks to the contribution of GLYC s Discover Sailing Program and our Club members. Over the past three seasons our DSC program s primary aim has been to see more kids sailing on the Gippsland Lakes. We have tailored our program each season to meet the growing needs of our small country community, and now have junior and youth sailors participating in local, regional, state, national and international regattas. We have welcomed new sailors and now have an expanding fleet of experienced youth sailors, (with numbers not seen since the late 90s / early 2000s). We are not exclusively a one-design junior / youth club, instead developing resilient young sailors with the skills and appetite to jump aboard any boat and enjoy sailing everywhere. GLYC highlights for the 2016/17 season include: Membership Expanding family and junior membership In season 2016/17 GLYC had 25 junior and intermediate (youth) members, plus another 40 junior / youth sailors through family memberships. This junior / youth number represents 15% of the total GLYC membership, and has significantly contributed to the Club s continuing growth. Retention Success with the Sailing Pathway (more sailing and more boats) Discover Sailing Day, Primary School Sailing and school holiday Tackers continue to be the feeder programs into GLYC s Junior and Youth Sailing. Our Sunday Sailing School (Start Sailing) was at it s capacity this season, and we had 75% increase in our Friday night Green Fleet with both Better Sailing and Racing programs offered. Pleasingly this has converted to increasing junior and youth numbers competing in GLYC racing (Tuesday twilights, Sprint Series and Sunday Divisional Racing, Life Buoy & Bell Series and Trophy Races), and also increased boat ownership with new Minnows, Optis, 125s, a 29er, an NS and Mosquitos welcomed to the Club this season. Coaching & leadership Increasing instructor / mentoring number, plus loyal membership contributions GLYC s junior and youth success largely stems from the commitment of a core but growing group of members who are passionate about developing and providing opportunities for our young sailors. Their time is generously given, all type of boats are actively welcoming junior crew and personal boats are often made available for our young sailors to use. Impressively GLYC s youth sailors are now taking an active mentoring role with our junior sailors, both within Sailing School, in club racing and at regattas.

9 GLYC - DISCOVER SAILING CENTRE ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTION TO JUNIOR / YOUTH SAILING (continued) Program development DSC programs designed to recruit and retain junior / youth sailors This season GLYC has added Powerboat Handling and Start / Better Racing to our suite of Discover Sailing Programs. These coupled with the introduction of Sprint Series racing (multiple short windward return racing in the bay), has given our junior / youth sailors opportunity to be introduced to racing in safe and supportive environment. As a results we have seen a 200% increase in juniors / youth participating in GLYC racing, and a 100% increase in regatta participation. With appropriate powerboat handling knowledge and skills, our youth are regularly driving rescue boats in support of sail training, and have assisted with race management on junior coaching weekends. The development of our youth sailors in particular has been considerably supported by the mentoring and coaching received over the season. GLYC has hosted the Victorian Minnow Sailing Association Traveller Series, with 20 sailors participating in coaching and racing over a weekend at the Club. We have again welcomed the Victorian Youth Catamaran Program for two days coaching, expanding the skills and experience of our growing fleet of youth catamaran sailors. A number of club members have also provided specific mentoring / coaching to our youth preparing for State and National Regattas. Whilst individual development in pathway classes continues to be important, the involvement of our youth sailors as regular crew in both Tuesday twilights and Sunday Trophy Races has been exceptional throughout the season. Such welcoming of our youth sailors by our experience adult membership is truly driving an inclusive and active club. Events Raymond Island Good Friday Appeal Sail The Raymond Island Sail on Good Friday continues to be the pinnacle of GLYC s junior and youth sailing program. This year 30 kids, in ten pacers made record time taking 3 hours to sail around the island. Over $3,500 was raised for the Royal Children s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, bringing the four year total raised by the kids to over $15,000. The day once again started with breakfast at the Club, then around 75 supporters watched the kids depart the GLYC shore at 8.45am. In crews of mixed experience, the pacer fleet sailed together around the Raymond Island compass marks, fittingly finishing down McMillan Straight to the applause and admiration of the waiting crowd. This sail not only continues to be a key milestone achievement for our junior and youth sailors, but also reinforces the important role GLYC plays in contributing to the community (both near and far).
