5 SUNSAIL DUBROVNIK ( N E) Is situated in ACI marina Dubrovnik, which lies near Komolac, about 2 NM from the entrance to the port of Gruž and only 6 km from the old city nucleus. ACI marina Dubrovnik along with nine other ACI marinas has been awarded the European Blue Flag, an environmental award given to communities that make a special effort to keep their beaches and marinas clean and manage them with consideration for the local environment.the inlet of Rijeka Dubrovaččka at the end of which is the ACI marina and the easily noticeable monastery at Rožat is m long. As a way point when approaching the mouth of Rijeka Dubrovaččka the islet of Daksa can be used. There is a lighthouse (Fl 6s 7 m 10M) on the northern cape of the islet, which can be rounded from either side. The latitude and longitude of the lighthouse are 42 40,2 N 18 03,5 E. The entrance to the mouth of Rijeka Dubrovaččka is marked by a lighthouse on Cape Kantafig (FlRG2s8m4M). The course through the riverbed leads to the Mokošica lighthouse (Fl R 3s 6 m 4M) and further to the ACI marina Dubrovnik. From Rožat the inlet becomes narrower and more shallower. Sea-depth is 3-5 m. The marina is flood-lit at night. A long breakwater protects the marina from the river currents. 1

6 WHEN YOU ARRIVE WHAT TO DO WHILE WAITING TO BOARD YOUR YACHT Your have several options while waiting for your yacht that should be ready from 17:00. Catch 1A, 1B to Dubrovnik Old Town for sightseeing or a late lunch in one of the side streets. When in the Old town take the Cable car to the top of SRĐ mountain to view the Old town and the islands to the North west. Walk the walls of the Old Town. Grab your towel and head to the swimming pool in the marina for a relaxing afternoon next to Bazen restaurant. Relax around the Sunsail reception garden. Take a stroll out of the marina to Vimbula restaurant situated on the banks of the Ombla River. CHECK IN AT SUNSAIL RECEPTION Skipper license Each skipper chartering with us will be asked to show his and her sailing qualification at the check-in. This is important because the authorities might stop you during your cruise and require to see your certificate; the fine for not having certificate with is up to 400 EUR + ban from the cruise ( the yacht needs to go back to the marina straight away). Yacht Damage Waiver and Security deposit Option 1 - Yacht Damage Waiver All bookings have automatically been priced to include the Yacht Damage Waiver option at the point of sale and on the booking confirmation. This payment was required to cover the possibility of damage to the yacht, or damage to or loss of ancillary equipment or damage caused by a third party. The Excess of 300 is taken at the base at the check-in as part of the embarkation process. If damage occurs to a value lower than the excess you will be refunded the amount less the cost of repair. If the damage incurred exceeds the excess, the payment will not be refunded and you will not be required to pay any additional costs upon disembarkation. Option 2 Security Deposit Alternatively, you are offered to pay a Security Deposit at the check-in as part of the embarkation process. This is a refundable payment of 3000 in equivalent currency before embarking and you will be liable for damage or loss incurred to the yacht and its ancillary equipment up to the maximum cost of If damage occurs to the value lower than the security deposit you will be refunded your payment less the cost of repair. If the damage incurred exceeds the security deposit value, your payment will not be refunded and you will not be required to pay any additional costs. 2

7 Tourist tax Tourist tax will be collected (Kuna or card) by the Sunsail staff checking you in. This is 7 Kuna s per person per day, children below 12 are not charged and those between 12 and 18 are charged 3.5 Kuna s per day. This fee is being forwarded to the Government. YourContact details Please leave at least your skipper s mobile phone number (or / and other numbers) with us at the Sunsail office. This will help us in contacting you (back) if needed. Inside the boat papers file you will have our contact details, as well as in the chapter with contact numbers in this book. TIMES BAREBOAT AREA BRIEFING Area briefing will take place at our office garden at 11.00h, 13.00h, 15.00h, h. It s not obligatory but it s recommended as it covers the South Adriatic archipelago in few aspects (geographically, facilities, weather). Please note due to serve weather this could change and the Sunsail reception will have further information as to where the venue will be. BOARDING TIME Boarding is at 17.00h unless stated differently. It is confirmed by the yacht name and its position by the office staff. The yachts are usually on pontoon E but you will be given the exact position prior heading down to the quay. YACHT BRIEFING TIME Your technician will show you the yacht operations soon after you board. Please be patient if you don t see him coming to you straight away, he s busy making everything go perfect for every charterer and will come to you shortly! Please do start to check the invent and run through the briefing check sheet yourself so that you are more familiar with items that will be discussed during the briefing. MARINA FACILITIES SHOP Near the entrance of the marina is a Konzum market. This is a local market and not a marina market like in some marina s. The locals shop here, and it has a whole variety of produce from bakery, fresh fruits, vegetables, deli, dairy and fresh meat, everything you would need for your charter Open times during high season (1st June till 30th September) Monday to Sunday 08:00 till 20:00 Open times during low season (1st October till 31st May) Monday to Saturday 08:00 till 19:00 Sunday 08:00 till 13:00 3

8 RESTAURANTS There are a few restaurants situated in the marina as well as one just a short walk outside of the marina, up the river. Restaurant Bazen is situated about 130 m west of the Sunsail office by the swimming pool and has a really pleasant atmosphere with the swimming pool all lit up at night. The pizzeria Nava is on the South west side of ACI reception, if you fancy a quick bite to eat or take out pizza on board your yacht. Pivnica is opposite the Konzum market and has more of a pub feel to it, so a quick drink can be taken while waiting for a bus or taxi. Vimbula for a relaxed evening meal along the banks of the River Ombla, oh and take a stroll inside the restaurant to see the photos from the past. It is roughly 600 meter walk form the Sunsail office, do take a jumper with as it can get cool in the evenings. SWIMMING POOL The swimming pool is for all marina guests and Sunsail guest, you will be able to find it on the West side of restaurant Bazen, or just ask one of the Sunsail staff or ACI staff to point it out to you. TOILETS AND SHOWERS Between quay B and C you will find the toilets and showers. There is no card or key required to enter. Gents toilets are closer to B quay and ladies toilets are closer to C quay. If they are busy take a stroll to the other toilets and showers on the North west side of the ACI reception, again no card or key is required. MONEY EXCHANGE / ATM The ACI reception has and exchange office, with a 3% commission fee. In the Old town you will be able to exchange money at one of the banks (Open during banking hours) or at one of the money exchange kiosk along the main street. There are two cash machines, at the entrance to the Konzum in the marina, or in the Old town there are many cash machines all over the place. During your sailing vacation there are cash machines on most of the populated islands, and in larger towns you will have banks and post offices to access to cash or money exchange. Most restaurants only except cash in Kuna or Euro (just ask) especially on the island, so remember to have enough cash with you. FUEL STATION INA has a fuel station in the marina, it is open from 1st June till 31st September during the whole week. In the low season it would be best to sail into the port of Gruz and use the INA station there on a Saturday or Sunday if you need to return the boat full of diesel or need a top up. If you have the fuel option where you are required to full up on return, please just show the technician your slip from the station so he can mark off that you have filled up. 4

9 The INA station in the marina is up the river. The best is to continue up the river close to the marina. If you go too close to the church you will run aground as there is a shallow patch just before the church. Return to the entrance of the marina the same way up. INTERNET Sunsail office If you have your personal laptop or Smart phone, Sunsail offers free internet around the Sunsail office. This does not extend down to the quay as the router is situated at the office. The network is SUNSAIL DUBROVNIK, for the password please ask one of the staff as we change it regularly. Feel free to sit around the Sunsail reception area anytime of the day to access the internet. Internet Caffe There is an internet Caffe which is situated on the South east of the Tennis / soccer court. It is open form about 09:00 till 18:00 during the high season. LAUNDRY Laundry facilities are available in the marina, however it is not self service. Drop off and collect and it is roughly 100 kuna per a load. Laundry is situated south east of the Sunsail office along the road about 120 meters away, in the purple building. Opening times are Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 20:00 and Sunday 08:00 to 12:00. HOW TO GET AROUND If you require a taxi or a bus when ending your charter with us please come through to the Sunsail reception where we can book a taxi for you to get to the airport, or wherever you intend to travel after your vacation with us. There are also public buses or taxi s available to the Old town, Airport or Hotels. PUBLIC BUS To get to the Old town you will be able to catch the local bus 1A, 1B which runs past the marina every 15 minutes. The service cost 15 Kuna p/p so try to have the correct change with you as it makes the boarding easier. Jump onboard and the bus goes all the way to the Old town. Where you get off the bus, is where it will pick you up again for the return trip to the marina. Once you see the marina press the bell and the bus will stop at the INA station (petrol station) outside the marina, then just a short walk back to the marina. There is a local bus system to the airport, but please contact Sunsail reception for more information on which busses to catch. TAXI At the ACI reception you will be able to find a taxi to the Old town which roughly cost about 120 Kuna one way. The same taxi s are available for the airport as well, and set you back about 300 Kuna one way. 5

10 BEFORE SETTING SAIL FROM DUBROVNIK ONCE BOARDED After you have boarded the yacht we recommend that you go through the cruising gear and inventory list, that is provided in the CICO book. We do apologies if you are short of an item on our list, please could you contact your technician or customer service to update or replace the required item, if you require it. One of our technicians will board your yacht and complete a full boat briefing with you, the briefing list is in the CICO book Gaining a good understanding of the boats systems will help you ensure a more enjoyable sailing vacation with us. Please ask any questions you may have on the technical aspects of the yacht during this briefing. When all embarking procedures are complete please sign the CICO book and return it to your technician or customer service before departure. BOAT PAPERS The boat papers are an identification file, with the yachts name in it, that legally needs to be present onboard always. These contain all the documents required for you to charter Sunsail yachts in Croatia. Without the correct paperwork you and your yacht could be impounded, so please take care of these papers and don't leave any harbour without them! The best place to keep them is in the chart table and to remove them only when asked for. Please return them to a member of Sunsail staff at the end of your charter. When you arrive in a marina, the pontoon staff will take the boat papers from you. Before you leave the marina the next day, you must collect the boat papers in the marina reception and pay for your berth. Important Please make sure you collect the yacht papers before leaving the marina, otherwise you are not sailing legally and you may be fined if you are stopped by the coastguard or water police. PRE CRUISE CHECK LIST The yacht briefing is completed and you fully understood, and you are happy with the systems and inventory? The yacht briefing paper work is completed and has been handed to your technician or to the customer service desk? Excess deposit has been completed at the Sunsail reception? The Boat papers are onboard? You have enough linen and towels onboard The water tanks are full? The heads are checked and are operational? You have snorkeling gear, and checked for correct sizes (extras are kept at the fin and snorkel bin)? 6

11 The outboard is checked? The dinghy and equipment is checked? Any Bulky suitcases are placed in the Sunsail luggage store for the duration of your sailing vacation? SAFETY GEAR CHECK LIST Lifejacket for each crew and skipper. Harness for each crew and skipper. Children's lifejacket (over 4 years of age), can be fitted at the Sunsail workshop. Flare box set with in date flares. Fire extinguisher (Minimum 3 per yacht). Fire blanket. Hack saw or bolt crops Tool kit Please leave the extra life jackets onboard as it is a requirement by Croatian Law in order for the yacht to navigate. DINGHY CHECK LIST There are a pair of oars, and they fit the rowlocks? There is a dinghy pump? The dinghy anchor is in the cockpit locker of the yacht with 15 m of line? The dinghy painter is in good condition? The outboard motor if you have hired one, is full of petrol? There is half a Jerry can of petrol in the anchor locker? You have the diver down buoy for when you go snorkeling? SETTING SAIL When you wish to set off from the dock, please inform your technician or customer service, in order for us to provide you with assistance? When you arrive back at the marina at the end of your charter, please call on Ch 08 or on your mobile phone, so that we can assist you on arrival? If you intend to arrive back earlier than your departure day, please inform Sunsail reception 24 hours in advance so we can organize a berth for you. If arriving after hours please contact ACI marina on Ch17, for berthing instructions and help. To fill up with diesel (not pre paid) please continue to the fuel station to diesel up. (Please stay close to the marina, as it is a channel with channel markers) 7

12 WHILE SAILING PORT POLICE AND COAST GUARD During your cruise, you might get stopped by the coastguard or water police, who do regular checks throughout the season. They will check your crew list and yacht papers to make sure it is accurate, also your tourist status and skippers certificate. You may be fined if there are passengers on the boat that are not on the crew list or if you do not have a valid skippers license onboard. MAINTAIN A LOOKOUT All Sunsail yachts are equipped with an autopilot which, in some cases, has led to new problems. Make sure one person is always designated ON WATCH. This person should be close to the helm and should keep a lookout for other vessel, debris, FISH POTS, land or other navigational hazards. There may be serious consequences for you as a skipper if injuries result because of poor surveillance. Make sure you lookout knows how to disengage the autopilot. Also brief your lookout on what to watch out for. Breaking water, patches of light colored water or brown areas may indicate shallow water or rocks. Seeing one fish pot usually means that there will be others. SECURITY Although crime is relatively rare on yachts, no Croatian Island is exempt from the occasional break in, most often to unoccupied yachts. Unfortunately no yacht is impregnable to the determined and knowledgeable burglar. So while we certainly recommend that you lock your yacht when you leave it, we would also caution you not to leave any easy portable valuables on board, but rather carry them with you when you go out. ASSISTANCE At any time you experience problems with your yacht, please contact us immediately and we will do our very best to get your yacht up and running for you, to continue on your sailing holiday. Should you need to reach technical support after closing time with an emergency situation. Please contact our technical manager Dubravko on his mobile phone (See contact section) In only extremely urgent situations while you are sailing and have no coverage for your mobile phone. Call us through VHF CH 16. Ask the operator to connect you with above number. If you have not pre paid for fuel please make sure you refuel the boat Use VHF channel 08 to call the Sunsail base if on bareboat, but only when you can see the base. The Topography of the area effects VHF range. Please return to the base by 18:00 Technical debrief with technician: Please inform our technicians of anything on the boat that needs to be repaired. This will ensure that, on a very busy turnaround day, the boat can be made ready for the next guest. BEFORE LEAVING THE YACHT Please ensure The yacht papers have been returned to reception. Your customer service question has been completed and returned to reception or left on the chart table. You have been debriefed on the systems and performance of your yacht Your navigation equipment has been left in the chart table, and you have been refunded your deposit from Sunsail reception. All provisioning has been placed on the galley top or saloon table for removal. All the garbage is placed in the marina skips. Dishes have been washed and stowed. All your personal possessions have been removed, please check the yacht thoroughly as many times are left onboard. Please close all hatches and wash boards onboard in case of sudden rain showers. Please leave the keys on the chart table Your transfer is arranged with our Customer service desk or at the reception. You MUST leave the boat by 09:00 the next day 9

15 DUBROVNIK CRUISING REGION CAVTAT TOWN Cavtat is the most southern Croatian town, 15 km south of Dubrovnik, 5 km from Dubrovnik airport. It has great bars and restaurants and is within easy reach of Dubrovnik and Montenegro. Many churches and a mausoleum are preserved in Cavtat. It has two waterfronts, one for the big yachts, which visit from all over the world, and one for smaller local boats. Indeed, these multimillion dollar yachts, from places as far away as the Cayman Islands or the US, give the waterfront a touch of glamour, maybe a bit like Monte Carlo or Saint Tropez 60 years ago. The underwater world of Cavtat is very attractive for diving activities; there you can visit some antique places of discovery, with over 1800 amphorae s originating from the 1st century. LOKRUM ISLAND southeast of Dubrovnik, right next to the Old Town, stands Lokrum Island. Richard the Lion-heart shipwrecked in After returning home from the crusades and found himself cast ashore, safe on Lokrum. In 1959 a Botanical garden is founded on Lokrum that you can see. Lokrum's special attraction is a lake called Dead Sea, a unique lake linked with the sea. Some of the coves are naturist which you can spot when you see the FKK sign. ZATON The bay of Zaton is picturesque 2 km long bay, located 10 km northwest from Dubrovnik, divided into two smaller bays, Veliki and Mali Zaton. The Renaissance summer manors of former Dubrovnik aristocrats are a historical site that makes Zaton bay recognizable as a Dubrovnik summer manor region. Besides Zaton's sunny beaches, special features are hidden coves with perfectly clean water as well. From the top of the forest provides a magnificent view of Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands. KOLOČEP ISLAND Koloččep, locally known as Kalamota, is the smallest and the closest one to Dubrovnik of the three major Elaphiti Islands and is the site of Witches Cave & Blue Cave. There are two quaint and romantic settlements: Gornje ČČelo and Donje ČČelo. Koloččep is car free but many paths and walkways crisscross the island. In between these two villages you can find hidden sand, pebble and rocky beaches. 11

16 LOPUD ISLAND Lopud is the most visited of the Elaphiti Islands. It s famous for having the one of the best beaches in Dubrovnik region, Šunj, ideal for the odd game of Picigin - one of Dalmatians' favorite summer sports. Many other great beaches on the island, especially for children and Lopud is a car free island.your black horizon Art Pavilion, modern architectural installation, was inaugurated in June 2005 at the 51st Venice Biennial and moved to the island of Lopud in Croatia in ŠIPAN ISLAND Šipan is the largest of the Elaphiti Islands. On the island there are two main villages: Šipanska Luka (250 inhabitants) and Suđurađ (150 inhabitants). Šipan used to be a chic summer getaway for noble families, i.e.. Skoččibuha and Sorkoččević, that had their summerhouses on the island. Nowadays Šipan is very popular for sailors being well protected harbor, for its herbs, coastal paths and fisher men. Some of the most famous seafood dishes originate from the island. SLANO Slano is a village and small harbor in the bay of the same name. It's situated 37.5 km NW of Dubrovnik. Farming, olive-growing, viniculture, fruit growing, are the most important activities of the locals. 12

17 STON The town has the oldest salt pans in Europe and is famous for the cultivation of sea shells and oysters. Ston was a major fort of the Dubrovnik Republic whose defensive walls were regarded as a notable medieval architecture. The walls extend to Mali Ston or Little Ston, a smaller town on the northern side of the Pelješac peninsula. The city walls are the second longest defense walls in the world. MLJET ISLAND Mljet is the greenest island on the Adriatic. It's believed Odysseus's cave is situated under the village of Babino Polje. One-third of the island, the western part, is a National Park (30 km). The Park is characterized by two deep bays which are called lakes due to their narrow passages to the open sea ( Veliki and Malo jezero; the Great Lake and the Small lake). The salinity of the water in the lakes is bit lower than in the sea, due to intake of fresh waters. There is a tiny island in one of the lakes called Melita with 12th C Benedictine monastery. Walking and cycling are allowed all around the National Park. Some parts of the National Park can be reached by car too. There is a fee of 95 Kuna per a person to enter in the national park (Pločče and Pomena area) Saplunara beach is an unusual beach on the Southeast end of the island Mljet, its worth of visiting. PELJEŠAC PENINSULA Pelješac is Croatia s windsurfing and winemaking capital. It's well known for red wines Postup and Dingačč. Pelješac has many good beaches. From villages Trstenik and Žuljana there are organized visits to numerous wine cellars. The entire area is perfect for cycling, mountaineering and nature trails (the trails are clearly marked and lead to the amazing panoramic views onto to vineyard slopes). KORČULA ISLAND Korččula has a long tradition in seafaring, shipbuilding and stonemasonry. One of the highlights of the island is the house were Marco Polo ( ) seems to have lived. Famous local events are taking place in the summer: dances Kumpanija and Moreška (sword dance) and klapa singing concerts. Generally the island has a long art 13

18 and cultural tradition, including museums, galleries and festivals. The Old Town of Korččula is surrounded by defensive walls and forts, saturated by cobbled narrow streets, churches and palaces of old aristocrats. The top class local wines are Rukatac, Pošip, Grk, Plavac (the whole island is covered with vineyards and olive trees). LASTOVO ISLAND The Lastovo archipelago was declared a Nature park in Total population is about people. Attractions are the famous Lastovo chimneys that were once status symbols of old Lastovo families. During summer, there are many music events and folklore evenings. Mainly due to the fact it's an isolated and distant archipelago that was a closed military zone until the 1990s, Lastovo is today a symbol of untouched natural beauties and extremely clean sea. HVAR ISLAND The island of Hvar was put among the ten most beautiful islands in 1997 by the Traveller Magazine. It's the sunniest Croatian Island, island of sunshine and crickets, lavender and sage. Hvar is known as a fancy and trendy place among the locals and Italians. Also, many celebrities visit Hvar with their yachts. Similar to Dubrovnik and Korččula old towns, Hvar Town is worth of exploring ( there are hundreds of buildings in Venetian architecture: cathedral, theatre, monasteries, pharmacies). Hvar has rich nightlife, in the height of the summer season it becomes a real scene. Famous local wines are of Bogdanuša and Plavac grapes. 14

19 PAKLINSKI ISLANDS The island group was named after paklina, the type of pine resin used for wooden shipbuilding. The local dialect influenced the pronunciation and the island group is often referred to as the Pakleni isleswhich means the Hell Islands in standard Croatian. The largest island in the group boasts with marina and the Meneghello family estate-with botanical garden, art gallery. The trip to Paklinski isles is going to be a real treat for gourmets. ŠĆEDRO ISLAND Official population is zero! There are two deep and well protected bays with restaurants. Exploring the island by walking paths, you can find good swimming spots and beautiful views. Šćedro is a fishing paradise. VIS ISLAND The two main towns on island are Vis and Komiža (rather mediaeval town). Vis is gets busy with music events during summer. A place of interest is Biševo Blue Cave near Komiža and the visit is organized by local travel agencies. Also, there are Archaeological Museum and Museum of Fisheries to visit. Vis Island was a big naval base in Yugoslavia. Therefore the protected submarine world around is rich with sunken ships (this can also be explored in supervision of the local diving clubs). It s situated in an SE direction along the water front. As you are walking along the water front dock look out for the sign post indicating BORDER POLICE AND CUSTOMS OFFICE, which is up a little alley way.once complete with the Police and customs continue to the Harbor Master s Office. It s situated in an SE direction at about 130 m from the Customs dock. The office has a Croatian flag on the outside with a black sign board with gold writing on it. Once completed with Captain you are free to sail and motor to Montenegro. Please leave the Customs dock soonest as this is a dock for official purpose only. We try to have the above information up to date. However please understand that sometimes things do change. We have been to Cavtat three times before writing down the above notes and yet it could all change. IMPORTANT: CONTINUE DIRECTLY FROM THE CUSTOMS DOCK TOWARDS MONTENEGRO. 24 The Customs and the Maritime Police office and kiosks are at beginning of the dock situated in roughly N ; E You report to them bringing your passports, boat papers and then go to the Harbour Master Office. The Harbour Master is just a few houses to the west of the dock (+-150m). Your crew list will be reviewed and stamped again. You buy a cruising permit there (40 EUR up to 11 m, 120 EUR over 12 m for a week). Contact number is The working hours for the clearing in or out, are Working between 07:00 and 19:00 There are no harbour dues, town quay charges or anchoring fees collected in Montenegro - your permit covers all except the marinas where dockage includes water & electricity ( i.e. marina Porto Montenegro in Tivat, marinas Meljine and Herceg Novi in Herceg Novi, MC Marina Budva in Budva). We try to have the above information up to date. However please understand that sometimes things do change. We have been to Zelenika twice in 6 months before writing down the above notes and yet it could all change. PROCEDURE TO RETURNING TO CROATIA After you have completed your sailing cruise in Montenegro, you will need to complete all the formalities again, but in reverse order. Continue to Zelenika and once complete with Zelenika continue back to Cavtat. 41 TECHNICAL ONBOARD BRIEFING NOTES BELOW DECKS Main battery switches You will see onboard in one of the back cabins, there are three big handle switches. Two reds and one black. The black is the negative and the one red is house battery and the other is engine battery (should be labeled). The engine and house batteries are separate, and there is an electronically relay that comes on when you start the engine that joins the engine battery to the house batteries. When you get onboard the battery switches are in the on position, so the rule of thumb is that Jeanneau boats have them in the horizontal position and vertical position is on for Beneteau boat. Windlass Trip switch Which is in the area of the battery switches? Please double check with your technician about the trip switch. There are a couple of different types we have onboard. Some are like a normal trip switch in a house, it trips down under load and you lift it up again. Some have a little yellow lever that comes down and you have to push it back up again, then there are some that have a red button that pops out. Diesel shut off valve Should be under one of the aft cabin beds. Rule of thumb is to look at where the diesel filling cap is on deck and that is the side of the diesel tank. If you lift the mattress in that cabin you will come to the tank and the valve is situated on the tank. Some boats will have a pull handle on a bulk head in the aft cabin and that needs to be pulled to shut it off. Generally you can leave the shut off valve alone. 12v DC panel Very easy to understand, push to one side and it switches on. Flick it opposite direction and the system is off. Some of the switches you can leave on for your whole trip as they will control lights that should have there own switches allocated to them, and some you need to switch off once you have finished using them as an electric bilge pump is connected to the switch. If there is short in the system the switch will trip. All the switches are marked and most of them make simple sense. However some boats have AUX switches or SPARE switches that have certain other equipment connected to them. The technician will explain what most of them are, but like I said before most are self explanatory. If you are not sure what some switches are I normally switch all of them on and then turn one by one by off to identify what is what. 220v DC panel Is mainly for the follow equipment, battery charger, water heater, 220v DC fridge (certain yacht models) and the 220v AC plugs onboard the yacht. We do not have inverters onboard so these items will only work when you are plugged into shore power in a marina on your cruise. Please note that if this does not light up when you have plugged into shore power it could be the trip switch on the shore power unit ashore that has tripped or the yacht has a trip switch onboard as well. Double check both. The switches work the same way as the 12v DC panel, and are clearly marked for what equipment they are used for. VHF radio Simple radio to use. It has the on and off switch, squelch and channel selection. On the mic it has a PTT. Please remember that once you leave the base we have no reception with the boat due to the topography. CD player/stereo 37

42 On the older model of yachts there is no Aux connection for MP3 players, but on the newer yachts have the connection for Aux to connect your MP3 player. There is a fade setting were you can fad the music into the saloon of the yacht and out of the cockpit area, and the other way around. There are many models so it should just be under the setting system on the Stereo. Operation of the fridge We have two to three different types of fridges. Some fridges you just switch on at the 12v DC panel and it all starts to work. However remember to only use the fridge when plugged into shore power with the battery charger working, or use it only when motoring. The older yachts we have the 220v AC inverter system and it will recognize shore and battery power and will sort itself out. However some yachts have been modified to a newer system, so just double check with your technician if you are not sure. On this 220v AC system there will be a flow of water coming out the side of the yacht, either midships or aft. This is just cooling down the gas inside the fridge and will be running when the fridge is on. Domestic lights Self explanatory. There are some lights that have the switches on them and some that have a switch near them. Saloon lights switch are even at the companionway hatch it is just a matter of identifying which is which. Just make sure you have the cabin and saloon lights on, on the 12 v DC panel. Fresh water pump Your technician will show you the position of the pump and the change over valve/valves. Very simple to use and we normally find the fresh water system in the saloon area. This could be located either under the saloon seating or at the back of the saloon seat back. The tanks do not auto level or you fill one it fills the other. They are all separate from each other on most yachts. The best thing you can do is have one valve open and one valve closed always. This is incase there is a water leak on the yacht and you don't waste all the water. Also the thank that runs dry first will cause the pump to only such the air for that tank. When the valve handle is inline with the pipe it is open and when the handle is perpendicular to the pipe it is closed. This is the rule of thumb for most boats but some might be a little different. To see the level of the tanks there are two different system onboard the fleet. Some yachts will have a tank level indicator and some yachts will have a water counter. Pleas just verify with your technician which one you have onboard your yacht. Seacocks The technician will show the position of all the seacocks onboard. Under the galley sink you will find the seacock for the drain of the sink. On some yachts there is a seacock handle that changes over to allow you to pump sea water to rinse your dishes, and if you change the position you can drain the fridge. In all the heads under the sink there is a seacock for shower pump water out, toilet water in, head basin water out and Holding tank, however the holding valve could be in another area. The technician will show this to you. Then the engine seacock, main one you need to know about is the cooling water in seacock. Some yachts have them at the front of the engine and some have them at the back of the engine. Cooker 38

43 To use the cooker push the knob for the burner, oven or grill that you want to use. So it is a push, turn light and wait a couple of seconds before releasing the knob. This holding for a couple of second warms the thermal couple up and keeps the gas flowing. If the gas was to go out, then the thermo would will cool and closes the gas on the burner. However still keep the gas shut off at the bottles. Gas shut off valve Certain yachts have a gas electric valve and other yachts a mechanical valve that you switch off and on inside that yacht. I also close the gas at the gas bottles, and you can find the gas locker at the aft of the yacht in one of the lockers. This is were you can switch off the mechanical gas regulator. Pleases keep it closed when you are not using the cooker. You will find inside one full bottle of gas and a full bottle of gas weights about 2.5 Kilos and the other bottle will have some left over gas in it. Seawater pump / fridge drain Most boats are fitted with a foot pump by the galley sink. Inside the cupboard you will find a valve / seacock that in one direction will pump seawater and the other direction will drain the fridge in the galley sink. Heads The tap in the heads if turned to the left is hot water and to the right is cold water. Generally most boats are like this. The tap in the heads can be pulled out and you have a shower. Please remember that when motoring the hot water will be much hotter than when plugged into shore power. There is a shower drain pump and it is either a switch on the floor, or on the wall is a switch, this will drain all the water on the floor out to sea. The toilet PLEASE NOTE IF IT DOES NOT GO THROUGH THE BODY IT DOES NOT GO INTO THE TOILET. THE SYSTEM WILL BECOME BLOCKED, SO PLEASE DO NOT PUT IN ANYTHING INTO THE TOILET THAT DOES NOT COME OUT OF THE BODY. The grey lever on the toilet pump if flicked to the left, and you pump the handle up and down will draw water out of the bowl and place new water into the bowl. When you flick it to the right the water is only taken out of the bowl. Leave the lever to the right when not in use. If you have the electric toilets on some of the newer yachts please just double check with the technician, all though most of them are self explanatory and have little pictures on the switch to explain what switch does what. If dirty water rises in the toilet bowl after use it is just the joker valve that needs replacing. One minute it will seal no problem, and the next we need to replace it. While on charter, just pump an extra couple of pumps of clean water into the bowl, then flick the lever to the right and pump all the water out and pump an extra 10 pumps. All that it is, is the water in the pipe going up to the holing tank. So when you add clean water and pump those extra pumps. The back fill will not be as much water and it will be a little cleaner. Please let your technician know about this when you get back so he can change it. Operation of Holding tank. Most of the yachts have gravity holding tanks. Open the holding tank valve and let gravity take it all out. It is normally good to do this about a mile or two miles out to sea. It is best to leave it open during your motor or sail, as with the movement of the yacht it will dislodge anything in the holding tank. I suggest that once you have opened the holding tank and all 39

44 has gone out, it is best to flick the grey lever on the toilet to the left and pump about 30 pumps of water into the tank. This helps wash the tank out and all will discharge out. It is almost like washing the tank, and this will help with the smell onboard. Remember when you head back into port or your anchorage to close the seacock again. Engine checks The technician during his checks will have checked the oil level and the cooling level. If you would like to check the oil level yourself then the dipstick is situated on the Starboard side of the engine. Remember when checking the level to open the oil filler cap as there is a vacuum the engine. The seawater filter is situated in the engine bay and every day after motoring it would be best to check to see if there is any weed inside the filter. Just close the engine seacock and open and clean the filter out. REMEMBER TO OPEN IT AGAIN. Engine seacock is situated either in the front of the engine or at the back, but to be more clear ask the technician the exact location. Engine v belts are a little difficult to inspect as they have safety covers on them. Smaller engines have a belt for the sea water cooling pump. The engine bays are clean and the best thing to do is every day have a look in the engine bay to see if there is any execs of something new. Black dust indicates possibly v-belt slipping, green blue water is coolant from the heat exchanger. Clear water with crystals forming is maybe salt water leaking, and black substance is oil. ABOVE DECKS Windlass use electrically The windlass will only work when the engine is one. If you have been anchoring over night or for a while. It is always best to start the engine about 10 minutes before you going to use the windlass. This is just to help boost the batteries to help lift the anchor. Take the engine revs to 1800 rpm to help with the charging. When ready to use the windlass double check the breaker switch is on and then use the up switch on the remote to haul up the chain or the down switch to release chain. It is best to not to pull the yacht with the windlass but try keep the tension of the chain on the windlass and not the chain and the yacht, if you weigh anchor, as this could result in the trip switch being activated. There are two ways to use the anchor windlass. One is to use the motor to drop it, and the other way is to free drop it. We suggest to drop the anchor, use the free drop system. On the windlass there is a clutch that you would need to use a handle. The clutch releases the gypsy and the chain will run out quicker to get the anchor into position. You are able to control the speed with the clutch. Once you have set the anchor you can lock the clutch. The other way is to just use the up and down buttons for the chain to up or down. PLEASE KEEP ALL BODY PARTS AWAY FORM THE WINDLASS, THE CAN BITE. Navigation lights Most of the yachts have the Port and Starboard lights on the bow rail. The Steaming light is half way up the mast. Some yacht will have a deck flood light, and some were not fitted with them from the factory. At the top of the mast is the anchor light. If you anchor in a bay and notice that the anchor light is not working you can use your cockpit light as and anchor light, hang this in the cockpit. On the transom of the yacht is the stern light. 40

45 Deck filler caps Along the deck you will notice the deck filler points. There are water, waste and diesel. The waste you do not have to open, as it is for mainly when we service the holding tanks. The water points all will fill up a water tank on all the boats. The water tanks are not connected (Except Oceanis 343) so each point fills up one tank. At the back of the yacht you will notice the diesel filler cap. Please be cautious about placing water into the diesel tank or via se verse. THE FILLER POINTS ARE CLEARLY MARKED. To open the water caps just use a winch handle and on some of the boats to open the diesel filler cap you need a diesel key. Double check that you are familiar with opening them and have the correct key to open up when needed. Spinlock handling Jammers, clammer or cleats are self explanatory. Please note we mark them at the begging of the season and try to keep the marked, but previous clients might change the configuration, or take the labels off. So if it is marked incorrectly, we do apologies. When opening a spinlock that is under tension make sure you take the load onto the winch first and then open the spinlock. It should open easily and never be forced open. Winch handling Self tailing winches need minimum of three turns around the winch and then onto the self tailor. The winches are two speed. Onboard our yachts we have a mixture of self locking and locking winch handles. The base manager personally does not like self locking winch handles as they can get stuck inside the winch, and when a line needs to be dumped it will be difficult. Autopilot/speed/depth/wind The technician will show you the basics on how to use the auto pilot, but if you look inside the chart table you will see the quick start guide. This guide will have more detail on the use of the autopilot/speed/depth/wind. With the depth unit the depth is measured from the bottom of the keel. In Dubrovnik the basic depth is 3-5 meters. In the beginning of the season we set them to the bottom of the keel, but previous guest play around and reset them, so if you are not 100% sure please double check. GPS/chart plotter Again the technician will show you the basics but the quick start guide will have more detail on the chart plotter. Genoa furling Very simple system, it can be referred to as a pull me, push me system. You release the Genoa furl line (but keep a little tension on it, perhaps one turn around a winch). Then you winch in the Genoa sheet on the side you want the Genoa to come out of. When you want to furl the Genoa in, keep a little wind on the Genoa (Don't let it flap to much) and winch in the furl line equally releasing the Genoa sheet. Do keep an eye out on the furl drum that you do not run out of furling line as it can break and cause problems later. Main sail 41

46 When hoisting the mainsail make sure that the vang and the main sheet are fully released as well as all the reefing lines. Also keep an eye out when hoisting that the battens do not get caught in the lazy bag lines, as this will rip the batten pockets off. When ready to hoist make sure you are head to wind and have some wind over the sails (About 4 knots), if there is no wind, motor forward at 4 knots. This will help the sail flap around and make the hoisting procedure easier. Reefing lines Have a look onboard your yacht we have a couple of systems onboard? All the reefing lines run back to the cockpit. There is either single line slab reefing or double line slab reefing. Single line reefing has one line that runs along the deck up the mast along the luff of the sail down into the boom, along the boom and up the roach of the sail and back to the boom. Double line slab reefing, has one line running along the deck up the luff of the sail and pulls this luff down to the gooseneck area. The other reefing line runs along the deck through the boom up the roach of the sail and down to the boom, that is to just do one reef. Very simple to use by just releasing the main halyard and letting the main sail drop to the reefing point you need. Pull on the either single line or the two lines to put in the reef. When all taught then hoist the main sail. Sometimes there is some friction involved so a crew member might have to go to the mast to help the system work better. Halyards and sheet All of them run along the deck. It is best to visually follow them along the deck and from there you can see what is what. The Genoa halyard should be left alone and not touched. The Genoa halyard is already set to a tension and if they tension is messed around with there can be halyard rap which can cause damage to the forestay, and possibility of the mast falling down. Lazy bag operation Well, lazy of course. Just unzip the bag to the back and hoist the mainsail (Please refer to the Main sail operation). When dropping the main, you just drop it into the bag and pack it all in nicely and zip it up again. Pull all the lines in and all will look neat and tidy. Gas regulator operation and leak tester To use it turn the knob in an anti clockwise direction to open and a clock wise direction to close. Gas bottles are filled according to weight. A full bottle is about 2.5 kg s. In the locker you will find one full bottle and one with some used out of it already. Manual bilge pump We have two types of manual bilge pumps. Some have a built in handle and some have a handle in the locker close to the manual bilge pump. There is also an electric bilge pump, and some boats have float switches and some don't. On the 12v Dc panel you will see the switch for the electric bulge pump. Emergency tiller and use In one of the cockpit locker you will find either a L shape or a T shape bar. This is the emergency tiller. In the center of the yacht at the back of the cockpit you will see a round cap that screws off (some are marked EMERGENCY TILLER). Remove this cap and then you will notice on the end of the L or T a slot that fits inside this hole. 42

47 Life raft position and use You will find the life raft either in a cockpit locker, or at the back of the cockpit area under the cockpit floor in a locker. Double check and make sure you are familiar with its location and use. Engine starting and stopping Technician will go through this with you and you can also refer to the onboard manual in the chart table. Engine water out of the exhaust Once you have the engine started please double check the water coming out the exhaust. It should be coming out in burst. If there is no water coming out, just try rev the engine up a little ( rpm) to try help get the flow going. If there is no water after this call for help. Morse control Technician will go through this with you, and you can refer to the onboard manual in the chart table for more info Transom shower and Transom shower shut off On the back of the yacht there is a transom shower. It has a shut off valve either in the locker or in the heads (not the tap on the shower) Please double check this position of this so that when not using the transom shower you shut it off. The transom showers have a tendency to leak and could waste all your water onboard. Boarding plank and stern lines These come with you and belong to the yacht you are on. 43
