Beacon Balise Leading Beacons: Balises marquant un alignement de route Beacons marking a clearing line: Balises marquant un alignement de garde Beacon tower Tourelle Bell Buoy Bouée à cloche A buoy fitted with one or more bells In French, the term Bouée à Carillon is applied to a buoy bearing a group of bells. Berth Poste à quai Bifurcation Mark (or Buoy) Bouée de bifurcation A mark (or buoy) which, when viewed from a vessel approaching from the open sea or in the same direction as the main stream of flood tide, or in the direction established by the appropriate authority, indicates the place at which a channel divides into two. Blast Son du signal de brume Breakwater Brise-lames A construction made to provide an area of calm water for shipping or for the protection of a coast or harbour against the effects of wave action. The term mole is also used for a breakwater of solid construction. In French the term môle is also sometimes used in place of the term "brise-lames", for a breakwater when it protects the entrance of a harbour. Jetty: jetée Pier: jetée A pier or jetty is a structure extending into the water approximately perpendicular to a shore or a bank and providing berthing for ships. A pier or jetty providing cargo-handling facilities may also be called a wharf. Page 2 sur 8

3 Buoy Bouée A floating object of defined size, shape and colour, usually made of metal or plastic, which is anchored at a given position and serves as an aid to navigation. It may carry a light or an acoustical or other device. Cardinal Marks Marques cardinales The following characteristic apparent shapes of topmarks are internationally recognised for the cardinal system of marking (or buoyage): NORTH Two cones, point upwards Black above Yellow SOUTH Two cones, point downwards Yellow above Black WEST Two cones, point to point Yellow with Black band EAST Two cones, base to base Black with Yellow band Cones points up cônes pointes en haut points down cônes pointes en bas points together cônes opposés par le sommet points apart cônes opposés par la base Chequers Damier An arrangement of different colours, usually black and white or red and white, arranged in alternate squares in the pattern of a chess-board. Coastal Mark A mark placed on the coast to assist coastal navigation. Particularly used with reference to marks placed on a long straight coastline devoid of many natural landmarks. In French, a lighted coastal mark is called Feu de Jalonnement. Conical Buoy Bouée conique Alternative term: Nun Buoy (USA), ogival buoy A buoy of which the upper part of the body (above the waterline), or the larger part of the superstructure, has approximately the shape of a cone with vertex upwards. D Dan buoy Bouée de pêcheur (souvent appelée «perche IOR») Daylight Signal Light A signal light exhibited by day and also, usually with reduced intensity, by night. This reduction of intensity is made in order to avoid glare. Daylight signals indicate, for example, whether the entrance to a lock is free or not. Page 3 sur 8

4 Daymark Alternative term: (Unlighted) Beacon Alternative term: Daybeacon (USA) An unlighted navigation mark. In the U.S.A. the word "Daymark" is also used for the daytime character of an aid to navigation. Daytime Character The daytime identifying visual characteristics of any aid to navigation, e.g. shape, colour etc. Docking Signals Signaux de trafic portuaire Alternative term: Traffic Control Signals Visual signals placed in a harbour or waterway to indicate to shipping the movements authorised or prohibited at the time at which they are shown. Vessel inward: navire entrant Vessel outward: navire sortant Draught Tirant d eau Air Draught: tirant d air Depth: profondeur Under-keel allowance: marge de sécurité sous la quille Under-keel clearance: profondeur sous quille E Eastward à l est F Fairway Chenal d accès à un port Channel: Chenal Harbour channel: passe d entrée du port Pass: passe Downstream: aval Upstream: amont Fixed Mark A navigation mark fixed in position. Floating Mark A navigation mark carried on a floating body such as a lightship or buoy. G H I Isolated Danger Mark (or Buoy) Marque de danger isolé Alternative term: Obstruction Mark (or Buoy) (USA) A mark (or buoy) used alone to indicate a dangerous reef or shoal. The mark (or buoy) may be passed on either hand. Topmark: two black spheres Body: Black with red horizontal bands J Junction Buoy Bouée de bifurcation A buoy which, when viewed from a vessel approaching from the open sea or in the same direction as the main stream of flood tide, or in the direction established by the appropriate authority, indicates the place at which two channels meet. The relative importance of the two channels is usually indicated by the use of a mark (or buoy) having a definite character (shape, colour, light character, shape of topmark, etc.). Page 4 sur 8

It usually serves to indicate the seaward approach to a harbour, river or estuary. In the U.S.A. this is also sometimes called a Sea-Buoy. Landmark Amer A navigation mark situated on land. 6 Mid-Channel Buoy A buoy serving to indicate a deep-water channel (fairway). Middle-Ground Marks (or Buoys) Marks (or buoys) placed at the ends of middle grounds. Mooring buoy Coffre d amarrage Mooring block: corps-mort N Navigation Mark Alternative term: (Visual) Aid (to navigation), Seamark An artificial or natural object of easily recognisable shape or colour, or both, situated in such a position that it may be identified on a chart or related to a known navigational instruction (e.g. taken from a List of Lights, etc.). This term includes buoys. A fixed artificial navigation mark is often called a Beacon. This may be lighted or unlighted. The French term Balise is generally used to describe an unlighted beacon. In French, the term Amer Remarquable is applied to a navigation mark which is particularly easily seen, by virtue of its form, size or colour. Northward au nord O Oil rig platform Plateforme pétrolière Offshore wind farm Champ d éoliennes Wind generator: éolienne Outfall Buoy Bouée marquant un émissaire A buoy indicating the mouth of a drain or sewer. P Pole Beacon Perche A vertical spar fixed in the ground or in the sea-bed or a river bed to show as a navigation mark. Port Hand Mark Marque latérale de Bâbord A mark (or buoy) which is to be left to the port hand when approaching from the open sea or in general proceeding in the direction of the main stream of flood tide, or in the direction established by the appropriate authority. Q R Racon A transponder beacon designed to give an indication on the radar screen of both bearing and distance, its characteristic paint usually beginning at and extending outward from a point a few hundred yards beyond the echo of the object on which it is mounted. Special Marks Marques spéciales Topmark: yellow St. Andrew's Cross (X) Body: yellow Spherical Buoy Bouée sphérique A buoy of which the upper part of the body (above the waterline), or the larger part of the superstructure, is spherical. Spindle Buoy Bouée à fuseau A buoy having a spindle-like shape floating nearly vertically. Starboard Hand Mark Marque latérale de Tribord A mark (or buoy) which is to be left to the starboard hand when approaching from the open sea or in general proceeding in the direction of the main stream of flood tide, or in the direction established by the appropriate authority. Stripes Raies verticales A number of areas of contrasting colour separated from one another by straight lines, and used as a distinguishing characteristic for navigation marks. Horizontal stripes are usually called Bands. Vertical stripes are usually called Stripes. Superstructure (of a buoy, usually lighted) Alternative term: Cage (USA) That part of the buoy built on top of the body of the buoy and used as a daymark or part thereof and usually to support the light or a topmark or a radar reflector, or a combination of these. T Tide Signals Signaux de marée Signals showing to navigators the state or change of the tide according to a prearranged code, or by direct display on a scale. Topmark Voyant One or more relatively small objects of characteristic shape or colour (or both), placed on top of a navigation mark (or buoy) to identify it. A topmark may be Simple Composite, viz. made up of two or three individual topmarks. The following characteristic apparent shapes of topmarks are internationally recognised for the lateral system of marking (or buoyage): Cone Can Sphere Diamond St. Andrew's Cross (X) St. George's Cross (+) "T" In the U.S.A. the word Daymark is often used for a topmark. 8 Two buoys mored abreast in a channel Term used of two buoys, one to port, the other to starboard, moored abreast in a channel. Two buoys moored not abreast in a channel Term applied to buoys moored on either hand of the path of shipping in a channel, such that port hand and starboard hand buoys are not abreast but occur alternately at nearly equal intervals of distance. U Unlighted Beacon Balise Unlighted Buoy A buoy not fitted with a light. Unlit Mark Marque de jour V W Watch Buoy Alternative term: Station Buoy (USA) An unlighted buoy established in the vicinity of a lightship (or, in the U.S.A. and Germany, of an important lighted buoy) as a reference point in case the lightship or buoy should be dragged off station. Waterway Eaux navigables Waterway refers particularly to the navigable part of a water area. Westward à l ouest Whistle Buoy A buoy fitted with one or more whistles. Without sea marks Non balisé Wreck Buoy Alternative term: Wreck-Marking Buoy A buoy marking the position of a wreck.
