3 VOLUME 53 ISSUE 2 PAGE 3 Commander s Report Amazing summer!! Bob and I set off on our boat trip north on July 19 th and returned on August 17. We had an amazing voyage up to the southern tip of Queen Charlotte Island on the mainland side. The weather and wind gods cooperated and gave us beautiful sun and smooth waters for most of our trip. Queen Charlotte Strait and Sound were glassy smooth and clear once the fog lifted about It was a little rough at Cape Caution but I survived without motion sickness!! The rugged outer west coast is quite aan mazing sight with the trees holding onto the rocks with their toenails and bending down to the earth due to all the storms and winds. We headed over to the mainland side and explored many inlets. We saw orca, grey whales, dolphins, grizzles and heard new bird sounds. Our friend who joined us in Bella Bella then proceeded to catch two salmon, a sole and a rock cod - so we enjoyed fresh fish. Did I mention that this couple are gourmet cooks so besides some prep work I did not cook for two weeks and had amazing breakfast, fresh soup for lunch and gourmet dinners!! The boat went down a few inches in the water due to all the great eating!! I have decided that I am not a great prawn fisher as I raised and lowered the prawn trap for a total or 2500 feet of line and only got 8 prawns!!! I do plan to take the radar course as it was foggy for about a week so radar was important. Bob was far better with radar than I am so in preparation for next years two or three month trip further north I will need to improve my radar skills!! We had a wonderful time, no motion sickness, beautiful weather and amazing sights so are looking forward to exploring more next year. We will continue to do local trips during the fall and winter months to keep the boat and us ready for next year!! Since I have been back I have had an Executive and committee meeting at my condo about closing our post office box and our mailing account for the Lubber Line. Our post office box was only being used for the post office bill as we receive all other charges by . The cost for the mailing of the Lubberline account had become more expensive than hand stamping and mailing the few Lubber Lines we send out by post. Therefore, it was passed by the Executive to cancel both accounts. This has been done so we no longer have a post office box to mail to. The planning committee set up plans for Course registration and activities for our NPS week at the Nanaimo Yacht Club. We did our registration for courses in the board room at the NYC with a fair number of registrants. We still have openings in all courses so keep talking to people about signing up. Dana has set up a beautiful display of our Regalia under the front counter at NYC.. She has done a great job and there are many new items you might be interested in ordering so check with Mike. At our September meeting Louise Turch gave excellent talk about Twitter. Louise is our Assistant PR Officer. She is not a member but has volunteered many hours promoting our club through various media and making pamphlets for our course advertising campaign. She has signed up to take the fall Boating Essentials Course so will soon be a dynamic member of our Squadron. Sheila gave a very informative and interesting photo tour of her riverboat cruise to Russia. Thanks to both Louis and Sheila for your amazing presentations. At the NYC general meeting I gave a brief talk about various aspects of our courses and we had display/interaction tables set up in the meeting room. Alexa, Barb, Sheila, Bill and Richard gave a brief talk about the courses we were representing at the four tables and Velma took pictures for Twitter. The tables included VHF (MMSI & DSC), knots, Celestial Navigation, Boating Essentials and Seamanship. Quiz handouts were available with answers at the sign in table for whoever wants to test their boating knowledge. There was also a representative at a table to answer questions and register anyone interested. We had two sign up for courses and four who took the information to consider registering for a fall class. I am also working jointly with NYC to form a Committee of boating organizations in the Nanaimo area so that we can jointly work on common goals regarding volunteers, courses, funding, decreased membership, etc.. These issues affect all of us and working as a group may help us develop strategies to deal with them. I will keep you informed as to our progress with this idea. We are still badly in need of an Executive Officer so if you are interested or know someone who might be let Alexa or me know. I will see all of you at our MEETING in October. I hope all of you were able to enjoying boating during our fantastic weather this summer and continue to do so in the fall!! 4 VOLUME 53 ISSUE 2 PAGE 4 VOLUNTEER HELP WANTED Instructor Electronic Navigation The Nanaimo Power & Sail Squadron is always eager to welcome new volunteers. We are currently looking for an enthusiastic individual to help us out in the education department. In the Spring of 2015 NPS will be offering to the boating community the Electronic Navigation Course a course dealing with electronic charting and navigating with GPS. If you like to meet new people with a common interest in boating, want to acquire personal satisfaction from being involved and making a difference, believe in safe boating through education and have knowledge of and experience with electronic navigation, contact Douglass Legg at or douglasslegg@yahoo.ca. Training Officer s Report The fall session of our Safe Boating Courses is underway. In September Boating Essentials with PCOC began on September 11th, Seamanship on September 8 th and Fundamentals of Weather, September 15 th. In October we will be offering the Maritime Radio Course and Junior Navigation. Registration for these courses is now closed as we have a full complement of enthusiastic students. The one-day Radio Course is will be offered again on November 15 and on December 20 th. Classes are filling up quickly, so if you are interested in taking the course you should register soon ( Planning for the winter session (starting in January) is in progress. We will once again be offering the Boating Essentials and VHF Radio courses. We are hoping to offer the Boat and Engine Maintenance Course and the Electronic Navigation Course--if there is enough student interest. Is Your Member s Profile Up To Date? Please keep your CPS-ECP profile up to date. It is a simple thing to do and particularly in these changing times. Members sometimes complain that the Roster is out of date, but please remember that the information is taken directly from the computer at National headquarters. Is Your VHF Radio Information Up To Date? Bought a boat or sold a boat equipped with a VHF Radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC)? Do you really want the old owner s (or new) on file? Contact Industry Canada with updated information. Again, it s easy to do and could mean the difference between getting help on time, or not. Also remember to tell your friends about your MMSI number. You miss most of the benefits of DSC if it is not used properly. Wikipedia describes Twitter as, an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called tweets Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Louise introduced us to Twitter at our September meeting and it was soon evident that our senior members were not users of the service, although Twitter is famously popular with younger people.
