3 VOLUME 52 ISSUE 10 PAGE 3 Commander s Report This will be my first report as Commander so I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and trust in electing me as your Commander. I believe that we have a wonderful Bridge and an amazing amount of support from Past Commanders and members. I will do my best to provide leadership, promote open discussion, encourage feedback about our courses, and increase membership participation. I will represent our Squadron at District and National meetings and raise concerns we have along with constructive ideas on how to resolve our concerns. To do this, I will need all of your ongoing ideas, concerns, suggestions, assistance and support. Let s all work together to maintain our ideals of our education systems and support our Squadron. On a more personal note, we pulled our 42 foot Grand Banks out of the water for its first major haul-out of the water and work since we purchased it last September. As you are all aware it takes a lot of time and effort to get everything done. We serviced and inspected all the through hull fittings, removed and replaced the packing, greased the various bearings, replaced clamps, sanded the 4 ft. by 13 ft. of teak at the stern and applied fresh stain. We cheated and had someone wax the hull!! We also sanded the bottom, had some fiberglass repair done and then painted the bottom!! I asked my husband, as we were doing the teak and the bottom, to PLEASE remind me why we chose a boat with so much teak and 10 feet bigger!! He told me it was the boat I always said I wanted!! He was right as I have loved the look and function of the Grand Banks for years! The joy was that Barry and Teresa, Bill and Linda were also working hard on their boats right next to us so we could chat and visit. Now our next project is to change all the oil and stock the boat for our one month cruise to Bella Bella in July! Our Squadron has had a busy year on the social side with good turnouts for the potluck dinner, 75 th Anniversary Flag Celebration, bowling, and our annual dinner and awards night at ABC Restaurant. The Way Marking event has been postponed until fall so get ready to come out and have some fun! Alexa, Steve, Angus and I spent May 3 rd at the NYC doing RVCCs s on 17 boats. The items that needed to be replaced on most boats were flares and fire extinguishers. Everyone was very receptive to our checks and was very interested in talking about the RVCC and asking about courses we were offering. We have placed VIND pamphlets at the NYC which gives information about courses offered by CPS and who to contact in each area. I have talked to the RCMP Marine division re flare disposal and they informed me that Parker Marine at 1920 East Wellington Road will take them. I talked to Parker Marine and they confirm they will take them at a cost of $7.00 each for A & D flares and $3.00 each for B & C flares. I also called Fire Hall #2 at 2499 Dorman Road (across from Golf and Country Club) and they will take outdated flares from 0900 to 1600 on weekdays at no charge for the present time. District is encouraging all Squadrons to try to get increased advertising in the North Star Roaster. John Smith and I are actively working on this for our Squadron. Enjoy your Summer! Darlene Moss Chief Proctor s Report In the past Training Year, we had 26 people volunteer 843 hours with 4 skippers and their proctors contributing 80 hours for the spring Pirates Cove Cruise plus 11 people volunteered 189 hours of class preparation and presentation for a total of 1112 hours. 16 people earned a Merit Mark last calendar year plus another 13 people for this calendar year. Thank you to all those volunteers. Velma Taylor, Chief Proctor

Coffee and treats on the dock, first thing in the AM Decorate your boat, visit friends, have lunch 1300 to 1600 hrs (approximately) play games 1730 dinner time at the pavillion Santa arrives with presents Music, dance and socializing until 2200 Boat judging will occur sometime this PM Coffee and treats on the dock again, first thing presentation of best decorated boat award. Note: I need a volunteer with a power vessel to carry the coffee urn and possibly other supplies to the event on Friday. I will also be looking for a jolly old elf, so be warned. wgweller@telus.net or Recreational Vessel Courtesy Checks It was a wet afternoon, but Darlene, Alexa, Steve, and Angus conducted 17 Courtesy Checks for Nanaimo Yacht Club Members. The RVCC program is a major commitment by the CPS to public education about boating safety. Taking part allows for enjoyable on-on-one interaction with the public. Alexa Stochmal and Darlene Moss ready to conduct RVCCs on a rainy afternoon.
5 VOLUME 52 ISSUE 10 Editor s Note Keep Waving PAGE 5 I try to wave at other boaters when we pass. It s not necessarily a huge wave, usually just a raising of the hand. You know like nodding to someone as you walk by and say good morning. If I m not pre-occupied while sitting on the dock, I try to wave at passing boats. Sometimes I m trying to wave them off our shoal, but most of the time it s just a wave. I was reminded of waving in the boat while driving in the outback of Western Australia last winter. Drivers in cities don t wave, nor do they in the suburbs. In the farm districts they might wave. But in the outback they always wave, even at 110 km/hr. Some just raise two fingers off the steering wheel very cool - but for the most part there is a whole hand. It seems to be a recognition of a shared experience, being 150 km from the nearest gasoline or days from water. Just mates. Wave it s a shared experience I suppose waving in boats is part of boating etiquette. It s polite, it s neighbourly, and it s civilized. It s part of the manners of the water. It s good boating manners to slow down in narrows, or in among the islands. It s good etiquette to slow down for kayaks; it s polite to keep your wake down approaching docks. It s neighbourly to keep the music down or to not set off fireworks in a pristine forest. Well, writing about boating etiquette might produce a long list, but it starts with a wave. A different kind of wave Help! Have a safe boating summer and wave.
