All of the signs of the coming and fall and winter were there, trailers lining up at the marina boat ramp to take boats away until the spring, the first winter series race at the yacht club, the first storm warning of the fall, the first power outage of the fall, and of course the first Squadron members night of the fall. The members night BBQ, hosted by Jane and Simon Huddy was lots of fun, a big thanks to Jane, Simon and the social committee for putting on this event. Our boat is on the hard at Stones Marina, Nanaimo, for bottom painting and other needed maintenance, all I need now is for the rain to stop for a couple of hours to allow the painting to be completed, however is was nice not having to worry about dock lines and potential damage from last weekend s storms. Check out their website Boating Etiquette: Wake Crossing On crowded, choppy water, especially on large lakes and coastal waters, wakes can be challenging. It's important to know the best way to cross a wake. Here are some good wake-crossing tips: 1. If traffic allows, turn your direction to be almost parallel to the wake and cross at a very gentle angle to avoid having to greatly drop speed. Depending on the size of the wake, you may need to slow your speed to keep the bow of the boat from pounding and causing discomfort to your passengers. 2. If you re approaching a wake caused by a boat coming in the opposite direction, approach with your bow at approximately a 45-degree angle to the oncoming wake. This will allow the bow to move up and over with a little roll and less pounding. If the wake is large, you will need to slow your speed to keep from falling off the top of the oncoming wake. 3. If the vessel making the wake has passed you (going the same direction you are going) and if traffic allows, turn so that your stern is at a 45-degree angle to the approaching wake. This lets the wake roll under the stern and pick it up while keeping the motor in the water. 4. 6 Two special 75th Anniversary flags are working their way across the country, one to the west and one to the east, visiting every squadron in the country. The western one will be dipped in the ocean in Sooke, the last squadron in the west, before it is returned to Toronto at the National Conference. Highlights of the event include: The special flag being carried proudly along the channel by the Royal Canadian Search and Rescue boat the JP McGregor, escorted by the other RMSAR boat. The flag being received by Past Commander Barb Hoffstrom, then marched up to the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza with a Sea Cadet Honour Guard The flag being passed over to Executive Officer Darlene Moss, surrounded by a group of Past Commanders and welcomed by the Mayor and other dignitaries. The afternoon will end with a dance demonstration by Tempo Dance Studio, and the cutting of an anniversary cake along with refreshments. In addition, the CPS Anniversary Flag will fly on the City of Nanaimo Port Authority Flag Pole from September 22?28. Nanaimo City Council has also proclaimed the week of September as?canadian Power and Sail Squadrons week. The evening will have you informed, inspired, and ready to become a citizen scientist. SPEAKER Caitlin Birdsall is an educator and biologist focusing on marine conservation issues in B.C. She is currently the Coordinator of the Vancouver Aquarium?s B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network, a project that collects sightings of whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea turtles from the coast of British Columbia to better understand their occurrence and distribution.
