Commander s Report June 2011 Along with Secretary Russ, I attended the District AGM in Campbell River. At this meeting, and subsequent Council Meeting and discussion, we witnessed the exchange of many gifts with visiting districts and squadrons, plus the award of numerous trophies and certificates. Of greatest significance to us was the comment that Cowichan had not returned the Squadron Challenge award. This is being investigated and as soon as we find it the trophy will be passed on. Most squadrons in the district appear to be functioning and providing at least the PCOC and basic Boating courses. Obtaining volunteers to act on the bridge appears to be a problem in some cases and the need to encourage participation was raised several times during the discussions. Overall it seems that membership in CPS continues to decline although some seem to consider the slowing rate of drop is a measure of success. Figures on membership renewals of those bestowed with a gratis year of membership are not directly available, but a figure of just 14% of first year associate members renewing was reported. During informal discussion we were able to generate some interest on the subject of disposal of outdated flares. D/C Cliff Miller promised to look into this and has subsequently contacted me on this subject. A small group in Ottawa comprised of manufacturers representatives along with a Canadian Boating Safety Explosive Group and the RCMP are working on this. Our normal June Bridge night coincided with our Safety Night presentation and a Stanley Cup game, so we did not hold a formal Bridge meeting. Congratulations to Paul Richards, Tony McCormick representing Mustang Survival, Steve lakes of Lakes Marine, and all the others who made this members night such an informative and enjoyable evening. Work is continuing on setting up our fall training schedule. Progress will be reported on at the August 10 th meeting As we embark on the summer season, and hopefully good conditions for boating in our area, I wish everyone an enjoyable summer and safe boating. 3
The CCGA-P Head Office is often asked about flare disposal locations. While it can be difficult to find facilities that will dispose of expired flares, Pacific Blasting & Demolition Ltd. have set up the following flare recycling collection depots on Vancouver Island: Ellice Recycling 524 David Street Victoria, BC ; Contact: Chris Parker Marine 1605 Comox Road Courtenay, BC ; Contact: Scott Parker Marine 1920 Wellington Road Nanaimo, BC Pacific Blasting & Demolition are providing this service at cost to the boating industry. Victoria s Ellice Recycling has quoted the following fees: Shells: $1 each Handhelds: $4 each Parachute/smoke: $9 each Their procedure involves recycling the flares in an environmentally sound practice including recycling any plastics plus residual testing of incinerated ash. >I saw this small ship tied up at Brentwood Bay while crossing the >inlet on the Mill Bay ferry. It looked to be quite an interesting and >purposeful little ship so my wife checked it out on the internet. >Attached are a couple of web sites. > > > Hugh. 4
Photos from the AGM 5 Photos from the Safety Booth at Home Depot For Sale I ran across a very nice motor sailer... at 29ft with aft cabin, diesel and in good condition for the old "average price" of $1000 per foot. Anyone interested please call me or and I will pass on information.. Cheers Derek Fiddes

April 1st to June 30th, 2011 The first few months in the fiscal year are slow as there are no major courses taking place, although PCOC and VHF continue to book classes throughout this period and the summer months. As at June 30th, 2011 we have cash on hand of $ 6, Our investments of $ 5, comprise of a $ 2, term, 2.0% expiring December 28, 2011 and a $ 3, term just expired and to be renewed in the next few days. We also have a credit balance with CPS headquarters of $ Thus our total cash and investments is $ 12, The Income Statement shows Meeting and Event expenses of $ 2, $ of this is settlement to the MBYC for the year ended with the balance being AGM costs, current year rent and Pig Roast expenses. The Other category covers items such as projection screen, mail box rental, stationary other than directly for courses, misc postage. So, all in all, we are in a financially secure position to tide us over through the summer. 9 The weather is getting better! Is your boat ready for some outings? We started this year with a Circumnavigate Wallace Island rendezvous. Four fearless kayakers started out Sunday morning. The tide was working with us as we rounded Chivers Point, bit of a chop on the outside waters but a fantastic whale show, lots of eagles, mink and raccoon to keep us company. Landed at the beach in Honeymoon Cove after two hours of paddling, the last half hour took everything we had! Lunch in the picnic area then opted to start from Conover Cove rather than challenge the wind and waves. So, not quite a circumnavigation, but pretty darn close. Monday dawned sunny and warm but all eventually headed home. A good start for the season. Upcoming events: July 22 24th Montague Harbour with Paint Along with Sue A chance to learn a few water colour tricks with renown artist Sue Coleman. Minimal charge for art supplies. Saturday painting followed with pot luck appy/ dinner. Sunday morning Continental breakfast $ 2.50/head. Anchor and stern tie but dock space is available. Book your own. Contact: Holly Fowler August 12 14th Tent Island. Ideal chance for Day Trippers to join in on the swimming, bbq hot dog and hamburgers on the beach, sliced watermelon for desert. Pot luck appies at 1600 followed by BBQ. Early dinner so boaters have the option of returning to home in daylight. Dinner $ 5.00/head Anchor and stern tie if overnighting. Contact: Holly Fowler August 27th VIND Annual Rendezvous The Vancouver Island North District Rendezvous for 2011 will be held on the weekend of August 27 at Maple Bay Marina. There will be an informal get together on the docks on Friday evening On Saturday there will be games in the afternoon, followed by hamburgers provided at no charge by your District. You are asked to bring a potluck dish or dessert to share. You can come by boat, by RV, or for the day by car. Full details will be on the cover of the Roster which should arrive early in the summer. September Labour Day weekend 2nd 5th Royal Cove on Portland Island Blackberry Festival. Mark your calendars details in the next Seabreeze October 7 10th Thanksgiving in Tod Gowland Inlet. Mark your calendars details in the next Seabreeze Remembrance Day weekend November 11 13th Musgrave Landing or Conover Cove. Both have docks but no power. Mark your calendars details in the next Seabreeze. If any member has a suggestion or desire to host a rendezvous please contact Holly Fowler. We are always looking for new group game ideas or outings. See you on the water Holly Fowler hollyf@telus.net 9

COWICHAN POWER AND SAIL SQUADRON A UNIT OF CANADIAN POWER & SAIL SQUADRONS Training Officer Report. June We have finished the schedule for the Fall 2011 Boating Course in Duncan. We will be having a pre-registration night on Monday September 12 to avoid the rush of registering students and starting the first night of lessons all in the same night. The Boating Course will begin Thursday, September 15 at 1900, with a half hour earlier for late registrants. We are starting a week later due to our new venue, the Cowichan Exhibition, having the fall fair the previous week. For our Shawnigan Lake Venue, we are not going to run the Boating Course there this fall. We have had requests from members to hold more courses and seminars for existing members so we will run these extra courses/seminars at our Shawnigan Lake venue instead of the Boating Course. Some of the shorter ones may be held in Duncan if space is available. We are asking our squadron members to let us know what courses you want so we can do up a schedule for this fall. Please call or Gary Cline at: homefarm@telus.net as soon as possible with your preferences or call at Listed here are some of the courses and seminars that have been held in the past, that are up for consideration: Seamanship; Fundamentals of Weather; Marine Maintenance; Advanced Piloting; Instructor Development; Celestial Navigation; VHF; Marine Electronics; Electrolysis; Diesel Motors Marine Emergencies; Man OverBoard Practice; etc. Any other ideas from members will be appreciated and considered. Your participation is critical to our continued squadron success. Many of you have assisted in getting us to this point; please continue to support us by taking part in these classes. The second VHF course of this season in Shawnigan Lake, run by Ion Barnes is going ahead. It will run at the Shawnigan Lake Community Center on Monday July 4 and Tuesday July 5 with the exam on Monday July 11. Times: Please call Ion Barnes at or him at: ionbarnes@hotmail.com or contact the Shawnigan Lake Community Center if you wish to register. One final nag. Is there anyone out there who can take on the ATO (Assistant Training Officer) and Chief Proctor North (Duncan) positions? We need experienced members in these positions to help the Squadron Training Officer (That s me, with little experience). We have a few new students say they are willing to help proctor but are not ready for these positions. So, this is a pitiful plea for help in filling these two important positions. Please call or Gary Cline, Cowichan Squadron Training Officer, at or homefarm@telus.net or Derek Fiddes, Cowichan Squadron Commander at or squirefidd@shaw.ca. 11
