2 Page 2 High School Tryouts: THE BAR HAS BEEN RISEN High School Sailors sailing in after the last day of tryouts. This year the high school sailors had a bit more than a spring in there step come the first day of sailing this fall. Everyone had a bit of nervousness tapping on there insides because they new it was the beginning of tryouts and they all became quickly aware of one simple truth not everyone was going to make the team. Coaches took every opportunity to coach and evaluate every sailor to make the whole process as objective as possible. Drills consisted of simple follow the leader, taking on the whistle, jibing on the whistle and dense mark rounding drills. With continual rotations of skipper and crew combinations, being able to communicate and sail with a new person was a critical component that every coach was a tune to. The coaches also presented sailors with more challenging drills to see how they responded to harder more intensive drills. The idea was to challenge sailors and observe how they dealt with that challenge. Did they rise to the occasion, where they able to absorb and comprehend the new ideas and skills and then execute, or did they fall short? These outcomes are important for a coach to observe because through out the season we will be constantly pushing sailors closer to perfection as well as presenting them with new ideas, tactics, drills, and scenarios and is important Opti Sailors: DEDICATED TO THE VERY END to know the strengths and weaknesses of each sailor. Ultimately, there were four characteristics which the coaches broke everything into; attitude, skill, commitment, and ability/ desire to improve. In the end 12 sailors were taken from Indian Creek School, 15 from Annapolis High, 18 from Severna Park and 6 from St. Mary s. Tryouts and cuts are a new thing for the Annapolis Club High School program, but already we have gotten tremendous compliments in regards to more personalized coaching, a higher standard and expectation of sailor and racing, and an overall raising of the bar which all leads to one thing...nationals! This year the fall Optimist program doubled in size, literally! This time last fall we had 10 sailors who came mostly from AYC programs, but as well from clubs on the eastern shore and other local clubs around the Chesapeake. This fall half of all our sailors come from other clubs, meaning, we must be doing something right. Now, seeing the number kids double is size may make some people nervous because the questions become, how is everyone getting coached, doesn't the number of kids cause an issue for coaches in terms of being able to manage the group? However, in reality our current size of 18 opti sailors is a great thing! While one on one coaching is a huge benefit for sailors who need help with boat handling and straight line speed the majority of where opti sailors and really, most sailors in general need help, is on the starting line and sailing in big fleets. Its easy to tell a sailor to go from point A to point B all by themselves, but add 17 other boats and be the first one around the mark and it

3 Page 3 becomes something entirely different. The other element that adds to the success of the program is that just in two days these sailors are getting more time on the water racing than even our high school teams. For the opti sailors whose ages range from 10 15, practice starts at a crisp 9am on and goes till 4pm. Also, on Sundays are the newest sailors to the group and who make up our Green Fleet Race Team. With 8 people on the team and practice going from 9am 4pm every sailor is getting his or her fair share of one on one coaching and time on the race course. A new Boat, A new Program The latest program to hit the deck here at AYC is the new OPen Bic program which is completely full in its debut. Coached by Mike Carr who is captain and senior of the Severna Park High School sailing team, the whole mission of the program is to keep kids having fun on the water who do not yet want the extreme competitiveness that the optimist program offers. Open Bics are a fast boat with an open transom designed for the same age group as the opti but with more overall speed think 29er trainer for the 10 15, 60 lbs 130 lbs age group and you ve got it! It s a great boat for a number of reasons; first, its light! Made from a composite plastic it stands up to a lot that the fiberglass opti just cant handle. Second, its rigging is identical to that of a windsurfer so there are no lost sail ties or blown out sails. Focusing on fun and speed, practice and drills range from capsize races to two on two drills, which is actually more exciting than fleet racing as well as competitive...but don t tell them that. New Coaches Breeds New Sailors This fall AYC has gone through a bit of change in terms of coaching staff, however this is not an uncommon occurrence at most clubs, in fact it is quite common and welcomed. New coaches bring different experiences and perspectives to sailing that benefits the program as a whole. However, what is mandatory for all coaches that work for AYC and its Junior Fleet is an exceptional work ethic, a back ground in sailing and racing that is equal to that of the best in college sailing, and a genuine desire to see the sailors of the AYC Junior Program progress further and further every day. Our two newest coaches to the fall program are Keisha Pearson and Melissa Pumphrey. Melissa comes from a background of having sailed for Annapolis Yacht club when she was in high school as well as an All American in College. Keisha comes to us fresh off the summer program here at AYC so knows a thing or two about what to expect from the sailors and the program. Daniel Ryan our last fall coach is the newest coach to the varsity sailing program as he coached the Junior Varsity teams last spring. For more information on our coaches see page 6.

4 BAYCOMPASS Junior Sailing Is the AYC Jr. Sailing monthly newsletter 310 1/2 6th Street Annapolis, MD Contacts: Dan Ryan Jay Kehoe Melissa Pumphrey High School Sailing Regatta Update Our high school sailing teams have gotten out on a great leg. Annapolis High school placed 1st and 2nd at the first two Varsity Regattas of the season proving that we will be a contender for the districts 2 of qualifying spots come Nationals in Spring. The other AYC team with the potential to place very well in the standings is Severna Park High School. Led by A Division skipper and team Captain Mike Carr, the team recently garnered a few new stealer freshmen that will help support the team come team race qualifiers and fleet race championships. The First event at Gunston was a pre season Page 4 regatta and gave teams a chance to go through there line ups and see what everyone was capable of. The second event at SSA was a pretty good representation of what every team should expect and plan for. The first thing that should come to mind though...is practice. Wait Sailing Fitness, How does that work? ST. MARY S Cassie Todd (C) Liam Moore Kelly Flanagan Trevor Brown Garrett Saffell Grace Harrington Last Friday the high school teams were sat down...the topic, fitness. The coaches received a couple smirks and you could tell everyone had the same question on there minds, Are you serious? You don't have to be in shape to sail, its probably the least athletic sport behind Golf. What we explained to them, and what they were unaware of was exactly how much they were wrong. We literally told them, on a windy day you could sail to the completely wrong side of the course, start second row, and round every mark tight nwide and still finish in the top 3, all because you were able to keep the boat flat up wind and sail fast down wind. While this information fell on mostly deft ears, the coaches were proud to hear that the Sailors from Severna Park High School actually have organized team work outs on Mondays and Tuesdays, which they are hoping will continue to grow in terms of turn out rates. This is a great sign of motivation and efforts to help the team succeed as a whole can only lead to success. 5 Page 5 Congratulations to Scott Houck for finishing 1st at Cressy Qualifiers! 59 competitors from around the Mid Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association were greeted with great weather at Jersey Shore. Sailors from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia saw winds ranging from 5 to 10 knots for the entire event and had a variety of wind condition. Northerlies started the regatta off and as the day went on clocked around towards the Atlantic Ocean. Tide and current changed throughout the day.. Air temps were in the mid 70 s about the same as the water. This year the Cressy Qualifier had the largest number of Radial sailors in district history, 47 boys and girls competed for the chance to compete in the ISSA High School Singlehanded National Championship for the Cressy Trophy to be held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, FL on October 30 31, In the Radial fleet, Gary Prieto of Southold High School in New York won by thirty point finishing the regatta with sixty two points. In second was Jack Swikart of Rumson Fair Haven High School in New Jersey and Ben Buhl of Deep Run School in Glen Allen, Virginia finished third. After twelve races, Scott Houck of the Severn School in Severna Park, MD finished the regatta with 45 points winning the 12 boat Full Rig Fleet. Second place was Kyle Swenson of St. Stephen s & Agnes in Alexandria, VA and third was Joseph Paggi of Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River, NJ. At the end of the day, the top six sailors in the full rig fleet were separated by less than ten points. CRESSY RESULTS Full Rig 1. Scott Houck 2. Kyle Swenson 3. Joseph Paggi 4. Dylan Finneran 5. This year s Hospice Cup Junior Invitational Team Race Regatta will host 16 top performing junior racers from all over the region, competing in teams aboard Optimist sailing dinghies. One of the missions of CBYRA is to promote youth sailing and racing on the Bay, and to provide a safe instructional arena for the racers of tomorrow. This year s Hospice Cup Junior Regatta will assist in promoting awareness of the greater mission of Hospice Cup, including youth Hospice, to an audience whom might not have intimate experience with Hospice care. This is an all-day event that will begin at 10:00 am with on-shore instruction for the junior sailors. Racing will be held from 1:00 4:30 pm. Trophies for the Junior Regatta will be awarded at the Shore Party along with the trophies for the feature race, Hospice Cup XXIX.
