We hosted the Spring Invitational on April 29 th and congratulations to Sandy McAllister and Will Donald for winning the Penguin class! Friday night OARS racing is underway with racing on most Friday nights through mid-september. Most sailing boats over 18 qualify for OARS, come on out and enjoy what I believe to be the most fun sailing that I have ever done, OARS! Rear-Commodore Ed Cassidy s team aboard Intrepid won the Shields Early Spring Series. We also held our PHRF Spring Series weekend the weekend of May 21 st and 22 nd. Four teams competed in breezy conditions on Saturday and more moderate conditions on Sunday. Congratulations are in order for Eric Crawford and the Restless team for winning this series. As you know, our club lost two major contributors to our club this past month in Harold Williams and Richard Slaughter. Harold was our Club Manager during the construction of our clubhouse and Richard was a Past-Commodore and strong supporter of our sailing and Shields fleet. Both memorial services were well attended by TAYC members. We will certainly miss both Harold and Richard. I am happy to introduce Thomas Orzulak as our new full-time chef. Tom lives in Easton and comes to TAYC from the Renditions Golf Course Restaurant, the Miles River YC and the Talbot Country Club amongst others. Tom began his professional career while serving in the U. S. Navy where he learned his craft in the Navy Culinary A&C School in San Diego, California. Tom began at TAYC this past month and please help me welcome TIDE DEADLINE: June 15 for the July Issue Submit articles to: KatlinTheTide@tayc.com and CommunicationsChair@tayc.com Club Manager Vicky Van Loo Office: manager@tayc.com

2 Commodore s Message continued him to our club when you have a chance to meet him. I am also quite happy to report that our dock project has broken water onsite and dock construction is fully underway. The month of June will be busy onsite and we look forward to completion in early July. Please be on the lookout for information for our America s Cup viewing parties at TAYC soon. We are working on the details for these and we will them out as soon as possible. While the preliminary America s Cup racing begins on Memorial Day Weekend, the official America s Cup is June 17 th / 18 th and 24 th through 27 th. Finally, registration for Jr. Sailing and instructional classes are open. Additional information is available in The Tide and on our club s website. Looking forward to a GREAT summer at TAYC! - Commodore, R. J. Cooper Membership News Approved for Resident Membership: John F. Mautz, IV and Rebecca Mautz Proposer: Jerry O Mara Second Proposer: David Parkerson John and Rebecca currently reside in St. Michaels with their two children. John s sailing experience began at a very young age, he spent many weekends serving as crew aboard committee boats in the Tred Avon and Miles Rivers. He participated in Junior Sailing Programs that happened to be organized by his mother, Diana Mautz. He was part of the team on the Island Lark log canoe, as a board man. John raced on Rumour, with Capt. Harry Seemans. Rebecca currently does not sail, but is very interested in learning! We finally got Wednesday night s racing in on May 17 th after three weeks of too much wind, or no wind at all. We ve had 8-14 boats on the line for the evenings we have sailed this Spring and Roger Vaughan leads the Series over Dave Branning by one point. Don Barker is in third with Dave Pulzone, Bob Roe and Pete Bailey follow in the top ten. We cannot thank Tot O Mara enough for being out PRO and having Bonnie Richards staying with us as our scorekeeper. The RC Laser National Championships were held in Pocono Pines, PA in late May and we will have results for you in the July Tide.

4 Shields Fleet News Shields Early Spring Series 2017 Final day of the Shields Early Spring Series, Non Spinnaker racing May 7 th PRO Pete Bailey, Peter Maloney, Skipper Ed Cassidy, Bob Dunning, John Cornette. Not pictured: Jim Massie and Jamie Brohawn We started our spring series on April 23 with a total of six boats on the line. Light and shifty wind prevailed the whole day and we were only able to get two short races off. Still every day on the water is a great day! Our standings as of now first place, Old Paint #71, second place Sea Gull #180, and three boats tied for third place. Competition will be tight this year if we can get all six boats on the course. The following weekend was pretty much the same scenario as the first with shifty light to be medium winds. Five boats were on the line for the start. Old Paint was not there to compete to hold her first place position. We did get three races off with the last race being shortened. Another tough day for the Race Committee. The following Sunday and the end of our early spring series brought more wind than we needed. There was a long wait to see if the winds would subside. After several skippers meetings it was decided we would race non-spinnaker, as the winds were steady at 20 knots gusting above 25. Four boats were on the line for the start of three great races that day. Ed Cassidy sailing Intrepid took first place honors for the series with Jay Dayton s Black Pearl second and the Liberty team taking third. All in all a good series. Our Late Spring Series started on May 21 st with a clinic given by Randy Shore of Quantum Sails, a very avid Shields sailor giving us tips on sail trim and tuning. Randy gave us a great power point presentation and followed up with some on the water sailing critique. The day was finished with three boats on the line with medium to light winds. After three races all boats were tied for first, the race committee decided that a fourth race should be run to break the tie, Liberty prevailed with a first place. More to come! 1 98 Intrepid Ed Cassidy 4, [5], 1, 2, 5, 1, 2, 2; 17T 2 73 Black Pearl Jay Dayton 2, [6], 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3; 17T Liberty Harry Seemans [5], 3, 4, 4, 4, 2, 1, 1; Seagull Jim Alpi 1, 4, [5], 3, 1, 4, 4, 4; Dragonfly Drew Kellogg 6, 2, 2, 5, 3, [7/DNS], 7/DNS, 7/DNS; Old Paint John Shannahan 3, 1, [7/DNS], 7/DNS, 7/DNS, 7/DNS, 7/DNS, 7/DNS; 39
