July was dominated by our junior sailors, and our Jr. Sailing director, Tim Herzog, provides a comprehensive overview of their activities and great success inside this month s Tide. Many thanks to Tim, and especially to the Jr. Sailing parents who make it possible for our juniors to compete in multiple out of town events. And a really special thank you to the many generous contributors who supported a highly successful Jr. Sailing Fundraiser on July 14. Jr. Sailing Chair Richard Ward performed flawlessly as auctioneer, briefly assisted by the interloping Vice Commodore, eliciting ever higher bids especially after the Commodore proposed an additional round of cocktails before bidding began. Our major summer event, the Oxford Regatta, gets underway on August 10 with the traditional Friday race from Annapolis, and with the Robson Memorial following on Saturday and the trophy presentation at Harleigh on Sunday, generously hosted by the Akridges and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club. All are invited; see the details inside. Then just two weeks later we are back with the Heritage Regatta, and multiple classic one design fleets including the exciting Log Canoes. We still need a few volunteers for both regattas please be in touch with Race Committee Chair, Karen Singleton, if you can offer some time. 2 What are our members up to? Greetings from Cairnbaan, Scotland! Halfway through Crinan Canal. The adventure: 2018 version. MANXMAN survived its winter hard on the Irish Sea with little fanfare. The first days living on the boat were interesting, who needs a stair master when a 12 foot ladder is worked multiple times a day! Sometime during the winter, the old refrigeration gave a final heave and died. So, we installed new. In addition, we have gone full on cruise mode: MANXMAN has davits! Anne arrived the 1st of June, very much missed. And we departed Malahide on June 5 bound for Belfast. Ardglass the first night, a small fishing village half way to Belfast. Like many of our own fishing towns, Ardglass is trying to reinvent itself after the fall of the fishing industry. We will see this multiple times! We arrive at Bangor Marina June 7 in dying breeze. The marina is a very modern upscale operation. Friday finds Anne and me on the train to meet Margy Robfogel for the tour of the TITANIC Museum. Highly recommended should one find your self there! In addition, a guided bus tour of Belfast. We had no concept of the troubles and for that matter I don t believe we in the states could grasp the nature of The Troubles. Sobering. Underway 07:45 bound for Campbelltown, Scotland on the lower part KINTYRE. Wish I could say it was a boisterous, grand sail across the North Channel. It was a motor boat ride with some modest motor/ sailing. Campbelltown is trying to reinvent itself also. We did see the new modern version of fish farming. Recently arrived from Norway is a huge feeding, floating processing plant for salmon farming, to the tune of 3.5 million. Up the Kilbrannan sound to Tarbert. Following Tarbert MANX- MAN back tracked a few miles to go up the Kyles (straits) of Bute to the most delightful anchorage called An Caladh. A one boat anchorage, Anne and Margy had it all, to their delight. A turn in the weather: a stout blow was forecast. We head for cover down the east Kyle for Rothesay Harbor, and it did blow! The locals spoke of k out on the Clyde. We took this opportunity to visit the grand estate known as Mt. Stuart. I encourage you all to Google Mt. Stuart on the Isle of Bute. Stunning! What king coal, English style built. In addition Rothesay was a local bastion of the Vikings and so a castle. Interesting history of the Norwegians trying to over take and contain the Scots. With the storm finally blowing itself out, we head up the Firth of Clyde for Rhu and the marina named Rhu. (Under the protection of our nuclear sub fleet ) The village of Helensburgh, a longish walk from the marina, was home to a noted contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright: Charles Rennie Mackintosh. By my own observation, an acquired taste from an architectural standpoint. From Rhu a boisterous 4 mile run across the Clyde to James Watt Marina for crew change. James Watt is the old Victorian style sugar warehouse for Glasgow. A day of being the tourist in Glasgow was followed by Margy s departure for Norway and Anne the next day to Boggs Bottom Cove. And then, the arrival of the Goldweitz s! -Ted Clucas Anne and Margy TAYC would like give a big thank you to Laura Ward, Mary Hackett, and Christy Gibson for their beautiful flower arrangements for the Junior Sail Auction!

3 TAYC s Intrepid Repeats at Cambridge YC Annual Three boats remain locked in a fierce battle atop the TAYC Shields fleet heading into the final day of its Summer Series on July 29th. The stage is set for exciting racing with just three points separating series leader Jay Dayton aboard Black Pearl, Ed Cassidy on Intrepid and Harry Seemans and mates aboard Liberty. The most dramatic day of the season thus far took place at Cambridge Yacht Club s summer regatta on July 21st. Early Saturday morning, under dark and threatening skies, Jim Alpi towed the competitors two hours up the Choptank to CYC. The predicted heavy weather held off until minutes before the first warning when, as if on cue, pelting rain let loose and the fun began! Racing through heavy chop in knots with gusts in the mid to high 20 s, the challenging conditions quickly claimed a victim when gear failure forced Jim Alpi and his team aboard Seagull to retire midway through the first race. Undaunted, CYC s fearless race committee managed to get in three wet and wild races over three hours even as several nasty squalls blew through the race course. With non-stop, boat-on-boat duels during a dozen windward and leeward legs, the racing was the tightest yet in the Shields fleet this season. In the end, after barely nipping Liberty at the end of the 1st race, and holding off a determined downwind sprint by Black Pearl late in the 3rd, Ed Cassidy s Intrepid finished to capture its second con- Calm before the storm(s)...shields heading to Cambridge secutive Cambridge title. The winning crew included Bob Dunning, John Cornette, Peter Maloney, and Jay Weaver. Our gracious CYC hosts, who have resurrected their club s hundred year old summer classic after a decade-long hiatus, threw a fun evening barbeque and awards ceremony (indoors) to cap off a day to remember for the exhausted Tred Avon Shields sailors. As a fitting exclamation point to the weekend, Sunday morning s two-hour tow back to TAYC was (of course) punctuated by three or four more long bouts of driving rain -- the weather gods having evidently concluded we d not yet done sufficient bailing! With the Summer Series wrapping up, the entire fleet is looking forward to continuing its spirited competition at the upcoming Oxford and Heritage Regattas.

7 Junior Sailing News Our first five weeks of the Jr Sailing high season have been windy and busy! We have been lucky with the weather except for a few extremely hot days and have been settling into new routines, new coaches, and new director. We are extremely fortunate to have a few returning coaches along with some of our own homebred sailors as coaches for our Juniors. It is nice to have Rebecca Leffingwell, Ali Van Loo, Noah Kullman and Brendan Little back to coach the next generation in a club that raised them. You can see our many racing accomplishments (and some progression) after this article. In addition to racing, our Learn to Sail program has been quite active! On July 2, after an exciting day of the Seamanship Games alternating between activities centered on Rules, Lift, Current, Knots, Splicing, Nautical Flags, and Independence Day Boat Decorating (winners: CeCe Carey, Parker Corson and Sam Benson, Grayson Gibbons-Neff, Hayes Peterson, David Manley, and Nicole Witter and Sarah Rosa). That same night, before Monday night dinner we celebrated Independence Day with the older sailors jumping in Optis with our younger sailors for a patriotic boat parade with spectators on the docks cheering them on. The Learn to Sail program has been really active in getting kids sailing, whether in the Ideal 18 s (sometimes towing a giant pink flamingo), doing laps on the water to and from the beach, between the docks where it is more protected, or much farther out on the River. They have been mastering many aspects of sailing, including getting out of the no-go zone, recognizing weather patterns, learning points of sail, and developing basic boat-handling (such as switch sides with tiller behind the back). Whether racing or learn to sail, our program thrives based on the contributions of parent volunteers and club members. Our Junior Committee (Richard Ward, Robin Cooper, RJ Cooper, and Julia Norris) has been committed to helping the vision become reality. Our fundraiser on Saturday, July 14 was a wonderful success and fun! (thanks Jenny Stewart, Jennifer Herzog, Robin Cooper, and others). Our parent liaisons (Coard and Sunny Benson, Kim Gibbons-Neff, Julia Norris, Holly Green, Bridget DeSimone, and Chris Kalinski) have helped make sure that practical logistics, especially with regatta travel, come together. Many help out with regatta support, doing things like trailering boats or hosting sailors/coaches at their houses (Thanks Wrightsons!). Almost every day, we have parents of the day assisting with bumps and bruises, and other day to day concerns that arise. Plus Vicki (Club Manger) and Katlin (Admin Assistant) contribute to making it all happen. Every day, I troubleshoot from about 6 in the morning till 11:30 or so at night, to make sure your kids have the safest, most efficient, and most fun learning experience possible; I alternate between minutia and bigger picture, working whenever possible to coach the coaches (pulling from 25 years of coaching and sport psychology experience). To be able to focus on the big picture, I absolutely depend on all of you to make it happen- so THANK YOU!!! Please be sure to come down for one of the last few Monday nights to watch racers and young aspiring racers in action at 1700 hrs for Monday Night Club Races with dinner to follow (rsvp to Katlin: KatlinTheTide@tayc.com), or join us on July 26 for our home Junior Regatta as a volunteer (juniorsail@tayc.com). Also, we will have our Big Boat Day, on Tuesday August 7, the day after our Awards Night. If you would like to use your boat or be involved, please reach out to Coach JoJo: jbarrie@syr.edu. We ve been busy hitting regattas around the Bay, from North Carolina to New Jersey, and even as far as Belgium! It is noteworthy to see our progression into Junior Olympics and the Gibson Island Regatta. Here are some scores (hopefully we got them all!) 9 RC Laser Fleet News Tred Avon s Oxford RC Laser Fleet has traditionally conducted its racing series in the Spring and Fall. Come mid-june, the TAYC docks are brimming with the excitement of Junior Sailing. We traditionally have taken an RC break in the Summer, but not this year! This year Summer Sailing lives, thanks to Pete Bailey and Jim Thompson who have made their facilities on Trippe Creek available to the fleet. Trippe is an ideal place for the model boats. Grass and jellies are rare even when they are in profusion elsewhere. Wind and heat are what they are and this season conditions have cooperated so far. Oxford RC Summer Sailing is both casual and unofficial, giving new skippers a chance to improve boat handling, practice starts, and brush up on tactics and rules without the pressure of series racing. Veterans are on hand to lend guidance. Attendance has been excellent so far, with ten or a dozen skippers turning out for two sociable hours of racing on Wednesdays, starting at 4pm at the Bailey/Thompson Sailing Center. We welcome anyone who wants to give RC racing a try. By the way, we have boats for sale and are always looking for new faces to join the fun. Pictures are from Bob Roe from our July 11th evening racing. -Dave Branning TAYC Happenings August Wednesday Night Dinners 1st - Grilled Pork Ribeye Potato Salad, Asparagus $22 8th - Baked Cod with Shrimp Scampi Sauce Lemon Rice, Broccoli $23 22nd - Pan Seared Crabcakes Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, Green Beans $25 29th - Beef Kabobs Over Orzo $24 Jr. Sail Awards Banquet August, hrs Adults (12 and over)$25 Kids (11 and under) $12.50 Crabcake, Grilled Chicken Breast, Macaroni and Cheese, Roasted Red Potatoes, Green Beans, Corn Bread, Dessert and Ice Cream Bar RSVP by Aug. 2!
