Wednesday Night Dinner Sat. 4 Penguin Frostbite Comet Pumpkin Bowl Regatta OXFORD, MARYLAND Founded 9 September 05 Commodore s Message Exciting happenings at! Thanks to some of the best Oxford Regatta weather that I can remember, we enjoyed a very successful weekend! The PHRF fleet had a fabulous ride down the Bay on Saturday with a brisk 5 mph NNE breeze. They finished in front of the Club which was a pretty sight for all to see. Of course Donnybrook was the first to tie up at 5 hours. The change in the format to race from Annapolis to Oxford on Saturday, instead of on Friday, resulted in more registrants because crews didn t have to take another day off from work. There is a new class called Chesapeake Racer Cruiser Association, (CRCA), which is in the process of being established. Their boats are more cruising-oriented and we generated 5 entries from their group and they hope to participate in future racing events. The Beneteau Club unfortunately had a conflict, otherwise they would have added an additional 0- entries. However they have assured us we are on their schedule for 06. We hosted a strong array of One Designs as well as 9 majestic log canoes that managed to get all races in. After Billie P. Hall capsized on Saturday, Sean Callahan and family came back to win the Sunday race! Unfortunately, the wind didn t cooperate to get the Robson Memorial race in on Sunday, but it filled in long enough for the log canoes and other One Designs to complete some extra races. As always, the awards presentation at Harleigh was perfect. Thanks to Chip and Sally Akridge s wonderful hospitality, we had another spectacular awards presentation on their beautiful property. Luckily, Chip was in charge of the weather so of course it was gorgeous. They hosted 55 attendees, 46 vehicles, and 8 boats on the water. A sincere thank you to all our members who volunteered to make our Regatta a success: our top notch PRO s, race committees, committee/mark boats, dock masters, staff, cashiers, protest committee, ambassadors, etc. You all performed flawlessly, well, except for Claude Maechling having to be TIDE DEADLINE: September 5 for the October Issue Submit articles to: Katlinthetide@tayc.com and Communicationschair@tayc.com Club Manager Vicky Van Loo Office: manager@tayc.com

2 towed in front of an audience. But hey it happens to the best of us! Our junior sailors have been on fire thanks to Scott Williamson and his outstanding coaches. Our kids have been winning on the Bay and elsewhere. Mark Bourdin won his class and fleet at the Oxford Regatta and took first place at the Junior Olympics among a 00 boat fleet in New Jersey. We are lucky to have such a strong group of green fleeters and they will be moving up to white, blue and red fleets. They are the future of our club! Just when you think the junior sailing season is over, Hayden Gibbons-Neff, a junior sailor and no doubt a future Commodore, came up with the brainstorm of scheduling Opti sailing on Friday nights rather than parking their Optis until next spring. This idea has been well received by the parents and other Opti sailors, so be sure to come down to cheer these ambitious skippers on while enjoying a Friday evening at the Club this fall. In some of my previous messages I shared that we are hoping to implement a junior sailor exchange program with Oxford s sister town, Wells, England, where Ian Scott has a summer home. This is starting to come together as Christine Parish has agreed to be the point person on this project. As this year s junior sailing chair, Christine will be the perfect person to spearhead this program. She will be developing an application process and we hope to have some fun fundraisers to make this unique opportunity available to all potential candidates. So stay tuned! It was my pleasure to host the On-Shore Rendezvous/Lobster Feast at South Wind with a sold out crowd of 0. Again we were blessed with terrific weather enticing members to arrive by boat. Three boats stayed overnight to take advantage of the Commodore s gourmet breakfast offering which consisted of country sausage, fresh fruit and blueberry waffles. In attendance were Jim and Margy Robfogel, Mike and Margot McConnel, and Peter and Beverly Rohman. They claimed the breakfast was worth spending the night on the boat, and oh what a great night to be staying on your boat. Be sure to come down to enjoy the NASS/Hammond races on September & and get signed up for the Master s Race on September 9. Commodore Brud LaMotte Junior Sailing News Hello! We had a terrific Junior Sailing Program this summer! 05 sailors were coached this summer, with an average of 49 sailors at the Club every day during our eight weeks. Although the sailing program has come to an end, summer has not ended yet. Go sailing and keep your skills sharp! There are plenty of beautiful summer days left on the river. Friday Night OARS and the Club Shields, Star, and PHRF Fleets are always looking for crew. Review the Club racing calendar for more details. If you d rather stay in your boat, the CBYRA Jr. Calendar lists all local summer regattas left on the junior calendar. See you on the water! Scott Williamson Director Jr. Sailing Program juniorsail@tayc.com From the Centerboard thwart The Oxford Regatta for the Centerboard Fleets was a huge success! The weather was great and we had a fantastic turnout. We had 6 boats and 4 sailors competing in 8 classes! Congratulations to all the sailors who performed so well! The Oxford Regatta is our biggest event of the year and requires an enormous amount of assistance. Special thanks to all the race committee volunteers who helped including the 4 signal boats, 9 mark boats, PROs Doug Firth, Tot O Mara, Margy Robfogel and Bill Wade, all their crew, and all of the onshore volunteers who worked so hard. Thanks again to everyone for coming out and supporting our sailors at these events! Jim Alpi Chairman Centerboard One Design

3 Shields News Three Shields sailed in the Oxford Regatta (Liberty, Sea Gull and Black Pearl) on Sunday in light to moderate winds. We raced with the Star fleet and were given our own start to compete for the Robert W. Downes trophy. Richard Lippincott was very patient that day as he waited for enough wind to get a race off. The wind finally did fill in and the fleet was able to make it around the course to the finish line. Liberty was well out in front the entire race but as luck would have it, lost to Black Pearl in the end. Pearl and Sea Gull brought up a new wind line that Liberty was not able to get to in time. The finish was Black Pearl first, with Liberty and Sea Gull fighting it out for second place. Liberty was barely able to hold second place as it was a nose to nose finish. As you might understand, Liberty was very disappointed as to the outcome because she plainly had the race won, but that is just the way it goes with sailboat racing!! After all was said and done, the outcome was good as Allison Downes was onboard Black Pearl for the first time during Oxford Regatta to win the trophy that is in honor of her father, Robert Downes. As of right now there will be boats competing in the Shields Nationals in Newport, Rhode Island on September 9 th thru the th. Black Pearl, Sea Gull and Old Paint will be there to represent the Club and we wish them all great sailing and good finishes to bring home some silver! Always Looking Forward Harry Seemans Shields Fleet Captain A highlight of the trophy presentation for the Oxford Regatta was the Robert W. Downes, III trophy for the Robson Round the Buoys Race for the Shields Fleet. Black Pearl, the Shields owned by Jay Dayton and Richard Slaughter, came in first with Arnie Boughner (left), Richard Slaughter, Allison Downes, Jay Dayton and Jason Wilson aboard. FOS News FOS has had an exciting and windy summer! We have had new members signing up and getting into the Ideals! Mission accomplished as some would say. We have added Sunday afternoon racing to our already busy calendar in order to accommodate those sailors who cannot make it on Monday nights. One windy Sunday, we had our Sailmaker, Bill Stevenson join us as well as BOG member Ed Cassidy with his wife Laura (new members). Bob and Pucky Lippincott competed in separate boats, and then handed over their tillers to Chris Summerlatte, Karl Krieger and Katrina Greer. The action was wild as there was more wind than true sailing experience on the water at one point! Katrina Greer had the most firsts with Pucky and Bob a close second. Karl rounded the day off with a back flip off his Ideal at the age of 8 years young. Karlʼs immediate comment No worse than jumping in my own pool! What a great sport he is! We ended our summer 8/ at a sailing picnic at Jan Chandonnetʼs beautiful home on Trippe Creek. We had a large turnout and most of the kids skippered their parents there. This seemed like a good idea since most of them aren t old enough to drive. There wasn t much wind on the return, so lots of folks got experience towing Ideals. Chef and FOS member Colin Edgell provided us with a memorable feast of pizza topped with lobster and caramelized onions, tenderloin, sliders with tomatoes and asparagus and more. We discovered men donʼt eat as much asparagus as they should. September will be a busy sailing month with the re- mooring of the Ideals on Sunday, September right after

4 FOS News continued the breakfast and start of the Hammond Race. The MASTERʼs RACE (age 60+ ID required) is on Saturday, September 9. Sign up with Ed Cassidy if you so dare. We also will have Doug Abbott take FOS members out on his Cal 40 this month for some big boat experience! We are packing in whatever we can, so our experiences and talents will grow. Weʼd like to thank Bob Roe for giving us some excellent races and starts last month. He was a welcomed addition to our RC staff and even provided us with photographs! And he gardens, too...who knew? So, September and October will be busy months for FOS! We hope to have a FOS Championship in October including a crew race!! Philip, Walter and Julie Ralph with Ava Arepally, Holly Greene and Aravind Arepally being towed back to shore by Bob Roe. John Chandonnet, John Watters, and RJ Cooper. FOS Skippers Philip Logan, Dawson and Hartley Cooper. The Ralph Family Our Race Committee, Bob Roe
