I am happy to report that our dock expansion is virtually 100% complete and I am quite pleased with the results. I feel that the newly created basin is a tremendous asset to our club and we will recognize OXFORD, MARYLAND Founded 1931 August 2017 the benefits of this basin for years to come. I truly thanks Jay Dayton for all of his hard work on this project! Junior Sailing could not be more active right now. I was on the water last night watching the Monday night races, and it was simply spectacular to see so many active, happy junior sailors who were all sailing extremely well around the race course right off the dock. Highlights from the Junior fleet include: An extremely successful Junior Olympic Festival was held at TAYC from July We hosted 196 Optis, Lasers and 420s with a total of 230 competitors from all around CBYRA with great success. Thank you Andrew and Christine Parish for such thorough organization! A well-attended and successful Jr. Fundraiser was held on July 22 with the results allowing for a financially solid Jr. Program to move into the future. TAYC is sending 11 Optimist sailors and two coaches to the upcoming Optimist Nationals in Norfolk, Virginia from July 28-August 3 Big boat day will be held August 9. The Jr. Awards and Dance will be held on the evening of August 9. Oxford Regatta is upon us and The Tide is full of details for this event. If you are able and willing to volunteer, please reach out and let us know! Finally, the Heritage Regatta is August 26 and 27, As usual we welcome Log Canoes, Comets, Shields, Stars (who will be holding their district Green Star in conjunction with this event); and Penguins (who will be holding their Internationals in conjunction with this event). Looking forward to a GREAT weekend at the Heritage. Thank you and I ll see you all on the water! - Commodore, RJ Cooper TIDE DEADLINE: August 15 for the September Issue Submit articles to: KatlinTheTide@tayc.com and CommunicationsChair@tayc.com Club Manager Vicky Van Loo Office: manager@tayc.com
2 Membership News The following have been approved by the Board of Governors for Resident Membership: William B. German and Lydia Samet Proposers: Bill Stevenson John Devlin FOS Fleet News In 1973 William s family moved to Easton and were greeted by their neighbors Bim and Evelyn Stevenson and their son, Bill. The Stevensons sparked William and his father s interest in sailing. They sailed in the Navy race to Oxford when William was 12. They then were introduced to Star boat racing and this led to William crewing for our Star sailors such as Richard Lippincott, Jimmy Lippincott, Howard Lippincott, Billy Lippincott, Jack Streeton, Bob Thompson and John Thompson. Eventually they moved up to a C&C and raced at TAYC until around William s regular crew consisted of Bim Stevenson, Pete Schneider, John Dillon, Mike Rajacich, Frank Walter with Jimmy Lippincott onboard as often as possible. William has crewed on Aspire and Amadeus. Over the years William has also bareboat chartered in the BVI, the Bahamas, and Tahiti including a sail over to Bora Bora. Last Fall William purchased a Melges 24 which he hopes to sail out of TAYC. Instructional Sunday Instructional Sundays have been a huge success. Many thanks to our outstanding instructors Mike Rajacich, Matt Rajacich, Jeff Cox, Patrick and Casey Firth. Many couples joined the group adding both experienced skippers and newer ones. Many of our newer TAYC families have joined as well. Topics this month were rounding the marks and starts. Again, this is a fabulous opportunity to learn from some of the club s best sailors. Mac Sommerlatte is owed a great deal of thanks for his coordination and support of this program in my absence. Lessons will resume in September. Monday Night Racing Great wind or none, but always super PRO s. Thanks to Bob and Michele Dunning this month for setting a beautiful course. Many thanks to Doug Abbott and Meredith Watters for coordinating in late June and early July. Also, thanks to Bob Lippincott who moved all of the boats in and out during the 4 th of July holiday. FOS Regatta Saturday, August 5 th We look forward to a FOS Regatta on Saturday, August 5 th. Please sign up by August 3 rd. Announcement to come in FOS as to PRO and time. Lobster Feast is that night so we can all go straight to dinner together after! Looking forward to September when we will have the Suzan Brice Regatta, Crab Feast Social, and racing skill lessons on Sundays. -Katrina Greer Ted Clucas s Journey to: The Isle of Man Ted Clucas made landfall at the Royal Cork Yacht Club on Sunday, July 9 after a 19 day transatlantic passage aboard his yacht, Manxman. Joining Teddy were Jonathan Goldweitz, William Read and Douglas Rollow. TAYC and RCYC burgees were exchanged (pictured right) and Manxman continued on to the Isle of Man. The Odyssey continues: Ted also exchanged burgees with the Commodore of the Douglas Bay Yacht Club, Darren Barnes(above). Ted is scheduled to return home on August 2 nd.

6 Junior Olympics Report We welcomed over 300 sailors during the Jr. Olympics held July 13 & 14. The sailors came from all over the Bay. Despite the heat, sailors were blessed with breeze on Thursday to start the regatta. Our PROs were able to get off five competitive races. When the sailors arrived back to shore they were greeted with well deserved Highland Creamery ice cream. Vicky and her staff outdid themselves with a yummy taco buffet for 300 people! Topping the evening off with our very own DJ Flip-Flop with some rockin' tunes. Friday brought light wind and the hope to start at least one race so the fleets could get one drop. As the respective committees made their way out to the course to find some breeze the sailors followed with the temperatures rising. All fleets were able to score one more race for a drop as the OPTI RWB fleet chanted to head into shore. The biggest concern of the TAYC JO committee was how to exit 300+ boats and sailors off our grounds safely and orderly. After extreme heat and tired sailors and parents, the plan worked seamlessly and by the time OARS sailors arrived Friday evening, you would have never know we hosted a regatta. There are so many people that made this regatta a success, our Commodore RJ Cooper who also served as the PRO for the Green Fleet, his wife Robin, committee co-chairs Anne & Ron Walker and Christine & Andrew Parish. Our OPTI PRO Andrew Parish and Laser/420 PRO Schuyler Benson. All of the on the water committee helpers, mark boats, scorers, registration/check-in helpers, shirts sales. Vicky and the entire TAYC staff and Chef Tom. Without all of these amazing volunteers, we could not have been able to put on such a wellorganized event. Thank you to everyone for making this such a success. Christine Parish Jr. Olympic Co-Chair
7 Shields Fleet News Shields Late Spring Series Our first Sunday of racing was up in the air due to heavy winds gusting above 25 knots. We had six boats registered to sail and three of us decided to race non-spinnaker in the heavier winds. We had three close races where in the end we all ended up tied for first place! Our great race committee with Doug Jurrius as PRO decided to have a fourth race to break the tie. Liberty ended up in first with Dragonfly second and Intrepid third. Our second Sunday brought light shifting breezes which made it hard for the race committee as they were moving marks after each race. We had all six boats compete that day with all finishes being very close. We were able to get three races off that day and Dragonfly ended up first overall, Liberty second and Intrepid holding third place. The final Sunday of racing brought another day of very shifty, light and variable winds to get two races off for the end of the series. Intrepid had problems right at the start when Old Paint got tangled with its backstay, separating the stay. Luckily, they were able to stabilize the rig and get back to shore, but that was the end of their racing for that day. That left five boats to finish the day s racing. Sea Gull was off to a good start and doing very well but did not realize that he had been over at the start and went around the course without exonerating himself before the finish and ended up the day with a seventh and a first. The final standings for the series had Dragonfly in first with Liberty in second and Intrepid in third. All in all, it was very close racing. This fleet is at a point where any one boat can win and this is what makes it such pleasure to be out there and competing. -Harry Seemans TAYC Happenings TAYC Fall Cruise Sunday, September 17 - Rhode River Monday, Sept 18 - Swan Creek Rock Hall Tuesday, Sept 19 - Sassafras River Tie Up Wednesday, Sept 20 - Layover Sassafras River for trip to Mt.
