OXFORD, MARYLAND Founded 1931 February 2015 Commodore s Message While the sailing activity is slim this time of year, we ve enjoyed some fabulous indoor social activities. We began with the Commodore s Ball, which was a sellout crowd, and I saw most of you out there on the dance floor. Big thanks to Barbie Calvert and her talented team of decorators: Susan Friedel, Mary Hackett and Joanne Boughner. They transformed the Club into a breathtaking setting combining the Yacht Club s theme with beautiful holiday decor. The tree was trimmed with clever clear balls with the Past Commodores photos inserted inside and holiday greens were tastefully displayed on all the tables. They even treated us all to take-home gifts which were the coolest clear ornament balls filled with snow and our Club burgee. Of course Vicky, Nancy and their gang had a hand in the décor too. The Three Penny Opera did their thing and got EVERYONE on the dance floor right up to the close, and we all enjoyed another fabulous dinner by our gourmet chef Colin! One other highlight of the evening was presenting Vicky with a lovely gold anchor necklace for her 25 years of devoted service. She is so devoted we had to tear her from cleaning upstairs to get her to show up for the award. The New Year s Day event was changed around this year to be Brunch with the Board of Governors and included another outstanding feast by Colin. We had another sellout crowd with a waiting list and many members expressed a desire to schedule more brunches in the off season. Hence, we have scheduled two more brunches on Sunday 2/22/15 and Sunday 3/22/15. Valentine s Day (2/14/15) is fast approaching and Barbie Calvert and her team are getting revved up to make the Club a little more romantic while Colin is dreaming up his next creations. Be sure to sign up to treat your sweetie before it sells out. 2 The first week in March we have four boats chartered at the Moorings in Belize which should be a fun week and a welcome change from the frigid weather. We will be sure to report back on this, and share some stories and photos. I m dreaming of another cruising experience for 2016 since these seem to be popular among our membership. I came across a 157 sailing yacht called Arabella which would be a wonderful opportunity to cruise the BVI s in comfort in She can accommodate 40 passengers with various levels of accommodations and is fully crewed with plenty of toys. This would be attractive to those who prefer not to get involved with their own charter and particularly welcoming to our single members. If it gets oversubscribed members may want to do their own charters and tag along with the mother ship Arabella. Gugy Irving has been onboard this yacht and claims it is great and he would sign up again in a heartbeat. This is just in the preliminary discussion phase so any feedback would be welcomed. Please check out the website atwww.arabellavacations.com/the-yacht/ and give me your thoughts. At this time of year we do our best to take care of any needed maintenance which is currently underway. There were some issues with our new carpet which is being replaced under the manufacturer s warranty. We have completed the installation of LED lighting via a grant of $20K, thus no out of pocket expenses for us and hopefully we will realize a big saving on our electric bill. Many thanks to Andrew Parish for shepherding this project through. For the most part, our clubhouse is in good shape thanks to diligent attention to needed projects over the years. After many years of discussion, we have decided to issue member name tags. They will be an attractive design in blue and white with the Club burgee. You will receive an information form to be returned so we can gather the correct names or preferred nicknames and you will have a choice of magnetic or pin-on style. We plan to have a metal panel mounted inside the coat closet for storage when not in use. Be sure to keep track of yours as your replacement will be on you. Finally, I am pleased to announce the Board has approved a handsome ship s bell in memory of Walter L. Fink donated by past members Jere and Chris Sullivan. We will fondly remember Walter each time it is rung. Hope to see you at the Valentines Party! 4 Junior Sailing Hello Junior Sailing Families! Online registration for the 2015 TAYC Jr. Sailing Program is now open, and I hope you ll join our program mission. We build lifelong sailors through excellent coaching to meet the diverse sailing interests and needs of our youth. Novice sailors seek confidence on the water and quickly get hooked on the natural independence and excitement found behind the tiller of their own boat. As sailors mature, some become competitive and aspire to improve their boat speed and tactics to succeed at racing. Regardless of sailor confidence and ability at the start, we nurture a passion for the sport at all levels to help each sailor have the most fun. This summer's program offers classes suited for all levels and sailors between the ages 6-18, and is designed to further sailor confidence and experience through developing a skill set of seamanship, rigging and tuning, handling, safety, and boat care/maintenance. From this foundation we encourage each sailor s passion for the sport, whether that is enjoying the pleasures and adventures of cruising or sharpening racing skills for success on the course. Our coaches are selected from the best with proven expertise to build upon talent and strengthen skills, while maintaining a safe and fun learning environment for sailors. Classes fill quickly and I hope your young sailors can join the fun! Please contact me if you have any questions about the program. See you on the water! Scott Williamson TAYC Jr. Sailing Director juniorsail@tayc.com Focus On Sailing Putting the Ideals to bed for the winter was not a chore this year. Home for the holidays were Bobby Lippincott (Assistant Varsity Sailing Coach of Christ Church), Brendan Little, and Khol Huand (team member and classmate of Bobby s). Their assistance extended to getting the loft into ship shape condition. Thanks gentlemen!

7 RC Laser National Championship The 2014 RC Laser National Championship was held, once again, at the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford, MD on October 24 th, 25 th and 26th. This is the fourth major RC Laser Championship to be held at TAYC since Twenty-six skippers from the Bahamas to Alabama to Texas to New York to North Carolina and points in between came together in gorgeous fall weather for the most star-studded championship in RC Laser history. National champions from at least 5 other RC classes chose to buy and borrow RC Lasers to make sure that they attended this first-class annual event. The winner, Stevensville, Maryland s Dave Ramos, has basically put his signature on RC class championships, winning three and placing second in two others. He had sailed an RC Laser about 3 hours prior to this weekend, a testament to his prowess in this sport. The weekend started with practice on Friday afternoon in fresh breezes. After the Friday practice session, the Yacht Club hosted us to a private party in the upstairs bar room and we all got to enjoy some new and old friends. After seeing races on Saturday, the fleet was then separated into the Gold (Championship) Fleet and the Silver Fleet. After Saturday, Dave Ramos held a 9 point lead over Middletown, Delaware s, Mark Reinhart and an 11 point lead over defending champion, Jon Elmaleh from Brooklyn, New York. Close to Elmaleh was Jim Kaighin, from the Bahamas and Ron Stephanz from Alabama. On Sunday, Dave Ramos kept his lead throughout the day with a couple of bullets and other top three finishes to win the championship. The always consistent Jim Kaighin moved into second with 2nds, 3rds and a 4th to edge Jon Elmaleh by 4 points. Jon had two 1sts and two 2nds on Sunday but had to count two 7ths and a 5th and that was enough to keep him from improving on Kaighin and Ramos. In the Silver Fleet, Barnegat, New Jersey s Harry Mote, sailing in his first RC Laser Regatta, held his 1st place from Saturday to win it all by 4 points over fast improving Mike Robertson from Raleigh, North Carolina. Dave Betz moved up from 4th on Saturday to grab 3rd, 6 points behind Robertson. Thanks goes to the regatta chairman and club members, Nick Mortgu and wife, Beth Lippincott, who packaged a great TAYC venue with perfect meals, beautiful weather, great skipper gifts and prizes as well as friendly competition throughout the weekend. Saturday night s yacht club banquet was first class with steak or crab cakes and lots of Chinese Auction donated gifts. A standing ovation goes to PRO, Dave Brawner, and his team on the dock of Ken Shaw and Skip Hall and his support boat operator, Dick Richards, and his wife, Bonnie, who provided the scoring from the finish line to the scoreboard. 8 Your Club Happy New Year! I would like to thank the Board of Governors, Flag Officers and Membership for the beautiful anchor necklace I received for my 25 th working anniversary. Thanks for putting up with me all these years. Now that the holiday parties are behind us, the staff is busy with winter maintenance of the clubhouse. Colin and I are working on a few new ideas to incorporate into some of our annual events. We have added a Sunday Brunch on February 22 nd, and a Jamaican Me Crazy theme night on February 27 th, hoping to get everyone out of the Cabin Fever Funk. You never know what Colin is going to cook up, so don t miss out on these events. We re looking forward to seeing everyone at the Club soon! All the best, Vicky Gate House Volunteers Needed! An easily forgotten building at the Club is a small structure near the drive entry. This structure, known as The Gate House is now in need of some attention. It has served multiple purposes over the years and may have some historical relevance. Prior to the current clubhouse being constructed, it temporarily housed the sailing instructor, occasionally maintenance workers and Jr. Sailing was once headquartered there. More recently, storage has been the function for the Gate House in addition to supporting critical mechanical and electrical systems. One wall of the structure contains electrical services for parts of the TAYC complex. This must be maintained in a stable condition to ensure continued service at the site. Also, the Club s wastewater pumps are supplied power from the Gate House to permit discharge to the Town s sewer system. Going forward, the Gate House functions can revert to use by Jr. Sailing as well as continued winter storage. To accomplish the building stabilization and allow for its continued use to the Club, the initial work will include demolition of the interior wall sheathing, ceiling and floor. We will then make repairs to the framing and foundations as needed while keeping the historic siding intact. In the spring, new roof shingles and paint will be applied. Volunteers are needed to save the Club significant expenses. Demolition work could be completed in a couple days by all who are good at carpentry. Any help would be appreciated! Please Jerry Friedel at: dovetail1933@yahoo.com. Thanks for considering this venture. Jerry Friedel

9 Yacht Club Reciprocity, a Valuable TAYC Membership Benefit An often overlooked, yet very valuable benefit of your TAYC membership, is reciprocity with other participating yacht clubs. Voyaging sailors have been using this time honored tradition of utilizing one another s yacht club for years. Via reciprocity a travelling yacht club member can participate in the activities of another club. These activities can include the use of the bar, restaurant, sailing activities, showers, pool, laundry, docking, and fuel services. Some facilities may even be free via a courtesy arrangement, such as courtesy docking, showers, etc. Personally, I have used reciprocity many times while cruising but one does not need to arrive by boat to take advantage of this benefit. While visiting family in Florida by car during Easter, we celebrated Easter Brunch at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club. They were very welcoming and afterwards we stayed by the pool for remainder of the afternoon. There were 12 of us! It was an extra special treat for our non-yachting family members. Another non-boating opportunity came while visiting one of my daughters in San Francisco. It was during Fleet Week and the town was packed. However, the St. Francis Yacht Club was very hospitable and provided us with premium parking passes and dinner reservations. What a way to enjoy the Blue Angels flying over the city with the Golden Gate Bridge as the back-drop! The first step toward taking advantage of reciprocity is requesting a letter of good standing and a membership card from our Club Manager. Please give her a few weeks notice as she is often very busy. If you have a particular destination in mind, look up the area in The American Yacht Club Reciprocity Guide, located in our club s office. Find the club or clubs you are interested in and send them an or call them to confirm that they still offer reciprocity and find out how they handle payments. Some require you to post a credit card deposit until your charges are cleared (Southern Yacht Club New Orleans), while others simply ask that you pay by credit card upon use of the facilities. Some will even bill TAYC on your normal billing! You can see why it is best to call. Cruising sailors might want to order the Reciprocity Guide for $35 at Yachting Club of America P. O. Box 1040 Marco Island, FL Their website is: Reciprocity works both ways. If you know any cruising sailors visiting our area, which are members of a participating club, encourage them to stay and dine with us. -Past Commodore, Chris Koch Members in the News TAYC member, Jan Greer, recently undertook an ultradistance event sponsored by Concept2, a Vermont company, maker of the "C2" indoor rower. C2 is the rowing machine of choice internationally for dry land training by virtually all crew teams at the university, national team, and Olympic team level. Jan undertook the individual 24-hour row, and achieved a world record in the Male Heavyweight category for having rowed 180,424 meters on the C2 at the OVFD fire station from December to December For those interested:
