What an incredibly generous response from more than 80 of our members, who have made donations in support of the Star World Championship Regatta coming to TAYC in October. If your solicitation letter was lost in the mail, it s not too late! See or Susan Devlin (sdevlin80@gmail.com) or Linda Laramy (lslaramy@gmail.com), or Vicky, about how to join those providing the resources to make the regatta an unforgettable week at TAYC for all the sailors who will be visiting us from around the world. And many, many thanks to those who have already stepped up. Speaking of championships, our Newport to Bermuda race crews did us proud this past month. Racing under the TAYC burgee, Tom Campbell on Nicole, and Doug Abbott on Flyer, and Coard Benson on Bandana placed second, third and seventeenth - out of 84 boats! - in the highly competitive St. David s Lighthouse Division. A great overall showing by our club, and we will be looking forward to tales from the captains and crew at a Wednesday Night Dinner later this year. By the time you receive this Tide, we will be on the cusp of our annual 4 th of July fireworks celebration. We want to extend a special thank you to the Commissioners of the Town of Oxford who this year agreed to share the ever increasing expense of the fireworks display with TAYC. This eases a real financial burden, so please extend thanks if and when you see any of the Commissioners: Gordon Graves, Gordon Fronk and Carole Abruzzese. Jr. Sailing is now underway and so far, all is well. Our new Jr. Sailing Director Tim Herzog already has introduced some exciting new ideas, and we are looking forward to a successful season. Please mark your calendars and help support this great program at the Jr. Sailing Fundraiser on July 14. We are already well into preparation for our annual Oxford Regatta, with the leadership of V/C Ed Cassidy, who will serve as Regatta Chair, and Governor Karen Singleton who will oversee race management for the many competing fleets. If you are interested in volunteering for this always popular event, in any capacity, please be in touch with either Ed or Karen, as we are still looking for additional help. Finally, the Commodore extends a personal thanks to Bob Lippincott for the opportunity to serve as crew on Bob s Star boat during an OARS race a couple of weeks ago. Bob observed earlier in the year that TAYC should not go into the Star Worlds Regatta with a Commodore who had never raced on a Star boat, so we have checked that box, and Bob promises we will do it again. Bob is an incredible helmsman, and the Commodore is rather effective, using the hiking strap, at flattening out the boat. -Tom Alspach, Commodore

3 TAYC Sailors Shine in Newport-Bermuda Race Three beautiful (and fast) boats from TAYC ranked among the brightest stars of this year s 51 st Newport- Bermuda race. The 635 mile contest started slowly courtesy of a high pressure system that brought several days of maddeningly light air. But as the breeze began to build, the Tred Avon boys began moving to the front of the St. David s Lighthouse division at 84 boats, the largest contingent in the 169 boat field. By race s end, Tom Campbell s Nicole had taken 2 nd and R/C Doug Abbott s Flyer took 3 rd in the St. David s Lighthouse division while Coard Benson s Bandana notched a solid 7th in the top half of his own class. Incredibly, after five days and nights of racing, Nicole crossed the line just 3 minutes, 15 seconds in corrected time behind the winner with Flyer finishing just 24 minutes later! TAYC s skippers and crew quite literally won too many trophies and prizes to list them all here. But best of all was surely winning the H. Irving Pratt trophy awarded to the top performing three boats from a single yacht club. Other highlights from the glittering trophy presentation ceremony at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club included Tom Campbell s Nicole (in his first Bermuda race as her owner) receiving the Corinthian Trophy for the best performance by an all-amateur crew while also being honored as the top performing competitor from the Chesapeake Bay. This year s TAYC skippers and crews once again carried on our club s proud tradition of fielding top notch competitors whether around the buoys or out in the blue water. As they make their way back home, please be sure to congratulate one and all! 4 RC Laser Spring Series Results The 2018 RC Laser Spring Series was a huge success on several fronts. We had only one bad weather racing night this Spring and eighteen skippers participated over the past three months, racing dozens of intense RC races. We have been experiencing, over the past 8 years, the same three skippers winning the majority of races so, this year, our fleet captains, Roger Vaughan and Bob Roe created a Gold Fleet with the rest of the skippers competing in a Silver Fleet. We all race together every night but for the Spring and Fall Series we will have separate awards. The Gold Fleet series was won by Dave Branning just.8 of a point over Don Barker and Roger Vaughan. In the Silver Fleet, fifteen skippers competed and here are the results: 1.Harry Henkel, 2. Dave Pulzone, 3. Pete Bailey, 4. Ryck Walbridge, 5. John Tochko, 6. Roger Baldwin, 7 Bob Roe, 8. Polly Cox, 9. Jim Karr, 10. Arsho Sarrafian. 11. Les Bowman, 12. Claude Maechling, 13. John Yates, 14. Ned Henninghausen, 15. John Knud-Hansen. Always a big thanks to Tot O Mara, Bonnie Richards and Chris Tochko who run and score our racing evenings. The most exciting news of the Spring was the addition of new RC skippers to the fleet. Those with refurbished RC Lasers are John Malin, Les Bowman, Karl Krieger, Ned Henninghausen and John Knud-Hansen. Welcome to all and we look forward to adding more skippers as we enjoy some summer racing off Pete Bailey s dock on Wednesday nights. Thanks to Bob Roe for the pictures of our June 13th action on the dock. -Dave Branning

5 Jr. Sailing News It has been a very busy couple weeks for Junior Sailing! We had our instructor orientation, complete with a full re-rigging of many of our club owned boats a serious process as the staff learned tricks of the trade such as splicing from Head Racing Coach, Edgar Diminich. We also rehearsed the Emergency Action Plan, and involved Talbot County 911, plus Oxford Fire and Ambulance in the process. The staff performed well and is feeling prepared in the event of an emergency. And we even squeezed in some time to consult via video-conference with Steve Keen a world renowned 420 coach, who advised us on some best practices with 420 sailing and safety. With the commencement of the Junior Sailing program, we saw many smiling faces! Intro to Sailing has been working on wind awareness, docking, and optimal giant pink flamingo towing. Sailors in Motion have been learning the ins and outs of rigging, capsizing, and general boat handling. Intro to Racing have been mastering follow the leader, a challenging and effective drill! In Green Fleet, there has been massive improvement with weight placement and sail trim upwind. Racing Opti s (Red, White, and Blue) sailors have been making progress in determining when they are or aren t truly on the line. 420s have been learning how to muscle the boat around with their boat handling and have started to learn trapezing. And Lasers have worked on ideal boat set-up and general boat handling. 420s and Lasers also had a fun outing at the Grasbergers, who hosted a wonderful little party that 420s and Lasers sailed to, on Bachelors Point. Many thanks to our staff for all of their hard work thus far, along with the Junior Committee, Vicky, Katlin, and the Parents of the Day (PODs). Consistently having PODs has certainly made it easier for me to be mobile, work on nipping problems in the bud, and to work on coaching the coaches and the kids in the program. Please continue filling in those slots on TeamSnap! Speaking of which, regattas are about to start! We need your help with various regatta tasks, so please help us get sailor rosters and volunteer rosters set asap! Again, we are off to a great start and many have contributed to helping that happen. Thank you and Go TAYC! - Tim Herzog, Jr Sail Director

6 FOS News We had a very successful basic boat clinic taught by RJ Cooper and Junior Sailing Director Tim Herzog. Fourteen participants received two days of training and a copy of US Sailing Basic Keelboat student manual. Weather and wind were favorable for the May 19th and 20th seminar which was very lucky considering the rest of the month. Monday Night Racing will continue in July FOS Picnic will be July 28th! Hey, eyes on the road, buddy! Jim Drayton preparing the ground for new plantings Emily Knud-Hansen and Ellen Rajacich beautifying the club entrance!
