We were fortunate to get the Spring Invitational and some Shields racing started the last week of April but the FOS program suffered from some rain delays. If you have not yet signed up for the FOS program, you should consider joining. FOS is the best value around to get access to a boat without the hassle and expense of insurance, license fees, maintenance and all the other costs of owning a boat. You just pay the FOS registration fee and you have a boat at the TAYC dock ready for you to sail away! You also get to enjoy FOS events and education with a great group of club members. The FOS program is described on the TAYC.com website. If you need help enrolling, contact Vicky at the Club or Pat Shehan, Chair of the FOS program. During the month of May the Dock Committee obtained the bids for their recommended dock replacement work. The Committee proposal has been accepted by the Board and the TAYC Finance Committee. A presentation meeting was held with Past Commodores on May 12th and their reaction was favorable. We are now scheduling meetings for the general membership. These meetings will be at 5:30 PM at the Clubhouse on Thurs 6/2, 6/16, Tues 6/21 & Thurs 6/30. This project is of vital importance to our club to maintain and improve our waterside facilities. Each member should make an effort to attend one of these informational meetings to see the proposal and have your questions answered. A special meeting of the membership will be called later in the summer for a vote of the membership on the Dock Improvement proposal. An online survey of the membership was circulated in late April thru early May to gauge interest in future cruise offerings for TAYC members. There was a strong vote for another Arabella cruise this coming winter. Rear Commodore Tom Alspach is working on a cruise that would depart from St. Martin s with boarding on Sunday evening February 26, See Club Manager Vicky Van Loo Office: manager@tayc.com

2 the article on the 2017 Arabella Cruise elsewhere in this issue of the Tide for further details. We also had a strong interest for an Italian cruise so we are organizing a bare boat charter on the southwest coast of Italy with an anticipated start date of Saturday Sept. 2, 2017 for one week of cruising. The trip begins on the island of Procida in the Bay of Naples. We will most likely be sailing the Phlegran and Pontine Islands near the Amalfi Coast. Nancy Cook has volunteered to organize this adventure for us. Please contact Nancy by (nancy.cook@gyresinternational.com) if you are interested in joining this cruise. European governments require specific sailing credentials and certification to charter in this area. This is the same requirement we had for the Croatia charter. Nancy is willing to organize a crewed charter similar to Arabella if enough interest is shown in that type of offering. That would be in addition to the bare boat offering. More details will follow as these programs develop. We have a busy calendar of events planned for this summer, thanks to the efforts of our Social Chair Bruce Wellington. We have an excellent staff to carry out all our sailing and social events. All we need now is for you to come out and enjoy using your Club. We try to make each event a good value for our members. Hope to greet you at TAYC soon! Commodore, H. D. Slaughter III Membership News The following have been approved for Resident Membership: Steve began sailing at age 22. 3 Junior Sailing News Hello Junior Sailing Families, Summer is right around the corner and the coaches and I are very excited to begin working with juniors. With not many weeks left before the first day of sailing (June 20 th ), please have your junior clean and inspect his or her boat. Confirm all equipment is present and in good working order. If something needs replacement or repair, make plans to address this well before sailing begins. Some parts are in high-demand this time of year and it pays to order them now. If this will be your junior sailor s first summer, review the online Daily Packing List to prepare for a fun and safe summer. Please me with any questions (juniorsail@tayc.com). Jr. Rig Up/Drop Off Day Junior boats and equipment may come to the club on June 11 th for summer storage. Between 1 and 3 pm, coaches will check boats for readiness and assign tubes/lockers. In the meantime, get to know your excellent coaching team! Short bios are online. See you soon! Scott Williamson TAYC Jr. Sailing Director FOS News WOW. May was some month. Rain, storms, winds forcing sailing cancellations. Our kickoff FOS sail on Wednesday the 4th was cancelled due to poor weather. We did celebrate the beginning of the season with a wonderful Wednesday night dinner. Thanks Vicky for making this happen for us on such short notice. Good company and good food. A great time was had by all! I have four items I want to address this month: First: a reminder that Ideal 18s are generally used only by FOS members, unless otherwise coordinated. Second: if you are new to FOS, please read the Focus on Sailing section on the TAYC website. Be aware that all FOS members wishing to sail the Ideal 18s must first be checked-out by a FOS Program Certifier. Guidelines for the check-out requirements can be reviewed by downloading the Check-Out Form. Returning participants do not need to be checked out each year. The FOS Program Certifier is Arnie Boughner. Our insurance requires that we follow this procedure, whether or not you have extensive sailing experience. Third: when sailing one of the Ideal 18s, be sure to sign your selected boat out and back in on the check sheet at the gazebo. We need to know who is using the boats. Also from a safety perspective, if we see a boat missing, we know who to look for. Fourth: we are looking forward to our Take the Helm training sessions for the beginner to intermediate sailor, focusing on sailing skill improvement. These will be held on June 5, 12, 19 and July 10, 17 from 3pm -5pm. The cost for these 5 sessions is $25. If you would like to sign up, us at ideal18tayc@gmail.com with your name, address, and phone number. Clear sailing! Pat Shehan and your FOS team Breaking News: Arabella/TAYC Cruise in the Windward Islands, February 2017 We have confirmed that Arabella will be able to accommodate our interest in a February 2017 cruise in the Windward Islands St. Martin, St. Barth, Anguilla. Essential details will follow soon, but here are the basics: Date will be the same as last year, last week in February with a start on February 26 and disembark on March 4. We will depart from, and return to, St. Martin which is served by nonstop flights from multiple US locations. Pricing will be the same as last year, and again there will be a $10,000 donation to our Jr. Sailing Program if we can fill the boat! We need to have our reservation confirmed by June 30, so watch for more details soon on how to sign on. Last year s Arabella cruise sold out quickly, so don t miss this opportunity! Arabella is a 157 foot sailing yacht which combines an incredible sailing experience with the comfort of a luxury hotel, with accommodations for up to 40 guests in 20 private staterooms, and spacious areas on deck.

Most boats were from other clubs on the Chesapeake with Sandy McAllister finishing 6 th and Bill Lane in 7 th, proudly representing TAYC. In the Penguin Class, we had Charles Krafft from SSA in 1 st place, William Lawson from SSA in 2 nd, Will Wagner from PSA in 3 rd, Hank Krafft from PRSA in 4 th, Carl Langkammerer in 5 th. In the Comet class, we had Elliott Oldak from SSA in 1 st, Andrew Wood from CRYC in 2 nd, Joe Lauver from SYC in 3 rd, Chris Price from PSA in 4 th, and Wick Dudley from CRYC in 5 th. Thank you to all participants and volunteers! The 2016 Spring Series for TAYC's RC Lasers is well under way. We have been able to survive cold temps, mild temps, light rain, light winds and strong winds over the first 6 weeks of our early season. The good news is nobody got wet from salt spray and we all went home with a smile after racing with friends. It has been a fun series so far and we thank Tot O'Mara for her PRO management along with Desne Roe, Bonnie Richards and Chris Tochko for score keeping support. We have had 15 skippers participate so far in 7 Wednesday racing dates and we have five more Wednesday dates remaining as of May 16th. Currently Dave Branning, Roger Vaughan, Don Barker and Dave Pulzone are at the top of the leader board thus far. On the weekend of May 14/15 four of our fleet traveled to Virginia Beach, VA for the 2016 RC Laser National Championship on Lake Christopher. Twenty six boats competed and Roger Vaughan placed 5th in the Gold Fleet. Dave Branning won the Silver Fleet with Harry Henkel 3rd and Roger Baldwin 6th. Spring Invitational - April 30 Gary Jobson, Wednesday Night Speaker on April 20, joined our RC Laser racing group for a race before dinner! 5 From the Ship s Log Year of the Commodore 2000 by P/C Tot O Mara Think back to What was more worrying to the membership of TAYC: Y2k or its first female Commodore? Don t ask me, but I am sure a few members had their doubts about handing over the reins to someone riding side saddle. Anyway, off we went in November 1999 after the superior leadership of PC Rollin Browne! The Commodore s Ball was held on New Years Eve 1999 as was the custom at that time. Several members were hoping for fireworks to welcome in the new century, but the cost was prohibitive. On December 31, 1999, I was very glad we had not gone the fireworks route as a strong cold front blew through with high winds from the northwest. I was working at my desk at home when I watched our gutters go flying past the window around 14:00. I had planned on an Eastern Shore welcome to the new century, however. Having called the Oxford Police and informing them of our plans, I mustered several past Commodores for a salute to At 23:55, several tuxedowearing past Commodores gathered in the bar with their favorite shotguns. (What other club is assured that every past Commodore has a favorite shotgun?) With military precision (sort of) they marched down the stairs and out to the flag pole. As the countdown proceeded, guns were raised and fired in unison at 24:00 to welcome in the new century. We were under way! The clubhouse was no longer new and problems had to be addressed. Luckily for me, Jay Dayton headed up House and Grounds. It was determined that the elevator shaft had settled and if not stabilized there would be a problem in the future. Jay met with the architect and builder and repairs were made during the winter without cost to the club. Jay was riding a white horse that year. The fourth of July was approaching and Lee Bailey told me he was too old to fool with the barge for the fourth of July. I promised him help on the barge and setting of anchors ahead of time but he was not to be persuaded. One desperate call to Jay and there was Apple Marine with a bigger and better barge for our wonderful fireworks. This started a long standing partnership with Apple for marine construction and use of the barge for the fireworks. I remember Oxford Regatta because of the misery I put my family through on the Friday race from Oxford. I had asked my cousin Kate Carraher and her children Cordo and Spencer to crew with Jerry and me on the Annapolis to Oxford race onboard our Pearson 30 Scarlett. Ever optimistic, I thought it would be a great family moment if we won the Grace Cordo Wilford trophy (given in memory of Kate s sister Cordo for the highest placing TAYC member in the race). My highly competitive nature and a never quit attitude instilled in me by my father, PC William Myers, kept my miserable crew on the Bay well after many smarter skippers declared the winds nonexistent. The wind finally filled in, and we finished exhausted under spinnaker at Black Walnut Point with Totch Hartge's Mother Goose as RC boat with about five minutes left in the time limit. After an exciting spinnaker takedown, we made our way home. I had lost a good crew but won a trophy! The 2000 Oxford Regatta trophy presentation was a bittersweet moment for me. It was the last trophy presentation at my family home, Plimhimmon. My father s health was failing, but he was thoroughly enjoying his final trophy presention with his daughter acting as Commodore and his friend the late Doug Hanks, Jr. holding court as master of ceremonies. To add to the festivities, Elvis Presley (otherwise known as Tad DuPont) made a surprise appearance and the crowd serenaded my Dad with a rendition of Amazing Grace. My mother Grace was usually addressed as God Dammit Grace and Dad teared up as the song progressed. I was saddened by the loss of a great sailor that year. Jimmy Lippincott passed away. Having grown up with Jim, I considered him a friend, a character and one of my generation s best skippers. I was soon after delighted by the most noteworthy success of another friend and club member. Eric Crawford and his crew aboard Restless brought home the prestigious Light House trophy as overall winner of the Newport to Bermuda race. What an accomplishment! Back to that female Commodore thing...that year a Star Boat Championship (I believe it was the world championship) was held in Annapolis. My good friend Doug Hanks had written a biography of the Bahamian Olympic Star sailor Durward Knowles. Doug brought him to the club for a Wednesday dinner. We gathered many of the older Star sailors and their widows and had a reunion of amazing sailing power from the 1940 s and 50 s. Durward was charming as he addressed the gathering but could not resist in his thanking of Commodore Tot on the club and the hospitality to add that while she appeared to be a fine Commodore, he could not have given any

6 woman his vote for such a high office. If Past Commodores are honest when asked what they were most proud of during their year, they would answer All the problems solved that the members had no knowledge of." I am no exception. There were challenges that luckily were met. My appreciation for the staff grew each and every day. That year our private party business grew and the success of each event brought more interest in the club as the time went by. The day you become a past Commodore is a great day. A day mixed with relief and pride. One of the perks of being a past Commodore is that you join a great fraternity that is asked over time to reflect on current plans and problems. Recently the Past Commodores have been given wonderful presentations on the plans for fortifying our waterfront construction and expanding and renovating our aging docks. I urge all members to attend the information sessions planned and to support the plans that our dock committee has developed over many years. Onward and upward! Who am I? Congratulations to Beau Firth, for winning last month s gift certificate, for correctly naming: Bob Lippincott! TAYC Happenings Wednesday Night Dinner On June 22 nd we will have two dinner options, please be sure to specify which option you would like when making your reservations!
