Commodore Greetings Friends, June is the halfway mark for the year and summer officially begins on the 20 th. This is a great time to check and update your first aid kit. Many times a first aide kit gets set aside and forgotten, that is until you need it. This brings up some good news for our club. We now have an AED or Defibrillator in our Club House. I want to say a big thank you to our Rear Commodore, Dale West and his wife Angie for making this happen. They are working on a time and date for training and proper use of the AED. We will have more information and details coming. Last month, we hosted the Singles Yacht Club for their Opening Day Ceremony. All their members and guest enjoyed the day. I d like to thank Tom Baker for his work at the Bar, and also Tony and Becky Rietdyk. Thank you Tony for your work with the flag set up and deployment during the ceremony. We received many thanks for the use of our club house and help with the set up. They are a good group of people to work with. New membership is the heart beat of our club. Without it we would not be the thriving club we are today. Use your NYCLB cards to hand out to people you know, who may be possible new members. Invite them to one of our Friday Night Pot Luck dinners. If you have not received your cards or would like more, you can sign up at the Club House or me at roycqueen@gmail.com I will make them up for you. Your 2016 Commodore Roy C. Queen The Scuttlebutt 2
Vice Commodore Tommy Wheeler I hope all of our Mothers enjoyed the Breakfast at Tiffany s themed buffet for Mother s Day. The Crema Café from Main Street provided the delicious treats and performed the set up. We had 69 members attend and just enough food to make everyone happy. The weather could have been just a bit warmer, but other than that it was a beautiful day. I hope we did our Mother s justice on their special day. As has been the routine for the recent past, table decorations were provided by Joyce and the center pieces were designed by Grayce, Sylvia and Joyce. Lovely job ladies!! Thank you. The raffle prizes were arranged by Sylvia and Grayce. As always, the bar tenders, Tom and Tripp did an outstanding job. I think it has become a contest to see who can get to the club and start setting up first. I don t know who gets there first, either Lorne and Jeanne or Roy but they have most of the hard stuff accomplished before I get there. Sherrill and Kenneth did a spectacular job keeping the food warm and the serving trays filled. We d also like to thank Tamara for the donation of the champagne for the Mother s special event drink. Thank you all for putting forth the effort to make these events fun and entertaining. If I failed to mention you by name, please know that I really appreciate all of your help. The next event is the Father s Day BBQ. The theme for this year s event is Boots, Beer and BBQ. Dad s Bar BQ and Smokehouse is going to be bringing in the Smoker and it promises to be another successful event. You may have seen them at the Farmers Market in the parking lot by Joe s Crab Shack. A flyer will be attached to the scuttlebutt and RSVP s will be required. Summer is now upon us so please be mindful of the number of boaters that will be on the water. Many of them are not as skilled as we are and may be less attentive to the rules of the road. Just remember to be safe so that you can come to all of our events and share the comradery that we enjoy. Respectfully, Tommy Wheeler Vice Commodore The Scuttlebutt 3

Rear Commodore Dale West Hello, Happy June Seems to be some June gloom moving in so summer s here!!! Welcome aboard to the following New Members: Justin and Ann DeMello Former US Navy 44 C&C Fourth Quarter Welcome Perspective Members: Daniel and Nancy Crawford Former US Navy 34 Cal sea Beastie I hope to see the new and perspective members around the club house and at the events often! Mother s Day was a fantastic day at the Club. Thanks to Tommy and Sylvia for keeping these great events coming Next up, Father s Day. Be there for some great BBQ and special surprises. Finally, Members from Memorial Hospital, Long Beach will be at the club instructing Navy Yacht Club members on the tools needed to possibly save a family member or fellow club members life utilizing Sidewalk CPR. Details coming soon Dale West The Scuttlebutt 5
Jr. Staff Commodore Gary Halliburton Thanks to contributions of our two new Commodores, Tommy Wheeler and Dale West, we are enjoying a new experience this year of catered monthly gatherings. We celebrated our March St. Patty s event with delicious Corned Beef and Cabbage, in addition to some great appetizers, catered by the Abbey of Seal Beach. Our Mother s Day brunch was catered by Crema Café of Seal Beach. We dined on Quiche and Egg Burritos, plus some great Muffins. This year our Father s Day event will be catered by Dad s Bar B Q and Smokehouse, featuring Tri Tip, Chicken, Pulled Pork, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, and Beans. All I can say is, wow, not only do we have the best view in Alamitos Bay, but now brand new epicurean delights by the sea. I can t forget to mention the contribution of our member Mic McCullough this month. He generously donated a Jockey Box and his time to purchase and assemble it. We gave it a try with a keg of Firestone 805. We will feature this again on Father s Day, so come and give our Club s new draft beer a try. Sincerely, Gary The Scuttlebutt 6
Race Committee Chair Chris Mewes The Armed Forces Day Regatta, our first regatta of the year, was a huge success. I would like to recognize the brilliant work on the race committee boat, with thanks to the crew, Tony Rietdyk as PRO, Camille D Esopo as timer, Becky Martinez on course flags, and Pam Padilla on class flags. Also, special thanks to Victor and Pam for their great job on the water photos. A huge shout out to Becky Rietdyk and her team for providing an excellent taco feast after the race. Two of our members represent the club in the Armed Forces Day Regatta: Heinz Butner on Raptor, 2 nd place in A Spinnaker and Bill Barham, on Latitude, 4 th place in B Spinnaker. Summer evening racing is in full swing; congratulations to our members representing the Club in these races: Paul Turang on Dawn Patrol with two daily firsts, and Ben Smith on Renegade with one daily first in the Seal Beach Pop-Tops, series one. The 2016 Catalina Island Series started in May with the Spring Long Point and return races. Several of our members are participating in this series: Guy Rosenlof, on his Farr 395 Lodgehall, Charles Buckner, on his Beneteau 48OC Caremet Sky, John Setchell on his Santa Cruz 33 Windfall and Bill Barham, on his Ranger 29 Latitude. The Tuesday Senior Salty Sailors continue to be great fun on Tuesdays; we have plenty of boats looking for crew, so get off the couch and go sailing. The May results follow: May 10 th, 4 boats, with breeze in the 6.5 to 14 knot range, we sailed course #1 twice around 7.4 miles, Shadowfax in first, followed by Macs, Callisto ll, and Sláinte (new to the fleet). 9 Fleet Captain Becky Martinez Greetings, It s June, and that means cruising!! Mark your calendars now for our summer cruises, because this summer is going to be a hot one. And that means we have to be out on the water. June 11-12, we ll be going to Catalina. Details of the cruise depend on the number attending, so RSVP soon by June 3 the latest. July 22-24, we ll be cruising once again to Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. This is always a great time, for boaters and drivers alike. In August, we ll head back to Catalina for our big cruise. Dates to be determined, and information to be sent out soon. Our American Legion Yacht Club cruise will wrap up the summer cruise season in September. Once again, we invite boaters and drivers to this event, as there is plenty of activity on land and on the water. These are all our regular cruises, so if you re new to NYCLB, be sure to sign up and talk to other members about how much fun these events have been. As always contact me (Rmart57979@aol.com) for information and questions. See you soon, Becky Martinez Fleet Captain The Scuttlebutt 9
