2 Commodore Spring Greeting, Friends! April is going to be an exciting month! Starting with our Clean-Up Party this Saturday, April 2 nd we ll spruce up the club house so it ll be in tip-top shape for our biggest event of the year Navy Yacht Club Opening Day Ceremony! On Opening Day, we are planning for approximately 100 guest from other yacht clubs as well as some of our own members. It is an opportunity for the yachting community to come together and share our mutual support and love of our sport. The atmosphere is festive as folks come dressed up in their best nautical attire. Our Opening Day is a great event. It gives folks a chance to visit our club and enjoy our spectacular view of Alamitos Bay. I hope to see many of you there, not only to help with the various tasks to be done, but also to enjoy the celebration. We are a great club, let s show our NYCLB pride! Gary and Susan Halliburton have worked many long hours to make this event the best ever. Remember to wear your name tag. To make the day even more exciting, we are having a Cruise-Out after the ceremony. I d like to mention the Senior Salty Sailors Races held every Tuesday. If you have not as yet joined them, you should give it a try. Remember, you are always welcome at the Friday night Pot Luck dinners. Finally, just for the fun of it, some of us are sailing in the Newport to Ensenada Race near the end of the month. Life is good! Commodore Roy C. Queen The Scuttlebutt 2

3 Vice Commodore Tommy Wheeler Well, wasn t that St. Patty s Day celebration great!?!?! A great big thank you to our Rear Commodore Dale West for making the contact and building the relationship with The Abbey, without which this would not have been such a success, over 90 members and guests. I have to admit that after the RSVPs started rolling in, I was more than a little concerned that we d have enough room for everyone to sit down. Thank you Roy for bringing the extra tables and chairs. They were just what we needed. The thought and preparation for some of the costumes worn were amazing. I appreciated the effort that you put into them and was very pleased with the number of fun seekers that still have enough young spirit left to dress up and make a spectacle of themselves. Thank you all for making this a memorable event. And I d be remiss if I didn t thank the ladies at the check in desk, Grayce, Sylvia, and Angie. Once again, the lovely table decorations were provided and arranged by Joyce. Very nicely done Joyce. Thank you. And for all the people behind the scene setting up and tearing down and for bringing the desserts and appetizers. Thank you all!!! Next up is our Opening day celebration. I ll not steal Gary s thunder but only ask that you see the flyers sent out in regards to the Cleanup day on Saturday April 2 nd. Hope to see you there. In May, we will be celebrating Mother s Day on the 8 th with a nice brunch. Once again, we are looking to cater the event and make it something special for those extra special ladies in our lives. Theme for the event will be Breakfast at Tiffany s. Due to the large response of the last catered event, we will be forced to place a limit on the RSVP s and the number of guests allowed. 4 Rear Commodore Hello and Happy April, Dale West Our annual membership renewal process is steady but there is still a sizeable percentage of the club yet to renew. If you are in this group of 59 members, please send your check along with your renewal form, payable to Navy Yacht Club Long Beach, to: Pam Padilla, Treasurer Gina Lane Huntington Beach, CA 926 Renewal forms are available at the club or online. The renewal fee is $125 if you are local to LA and Orange County, or $75 if you are out of the LA Orange County area. Please remember, per club Bylaws Section 6: No member in arrears for dues or other indebtedness to the Club shall be eligible to hold office, vote, or otherwise participate in any Club meeting or activity. A member shall be considered in arrears when dues or other indebtedness are outstanding sixty days after they are due. (Dues are due on January 1 st.) March 13th was a fantastic day at the Yacht Club a bit o Ireland, I do believe. We had more than 90 members and guests arrive wearing their green and other festive garb ready to celebrate St. Patrick s Day! With Victor Padilla providing some lively Irish tunes, members enjoyed the traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage as supplied by our friend and caterer Tom Rowe of The Abbey, Seal Beach fame. We hope to utilize the services of local caterers more often for upcoming formal events. The Scuttlebutt 4

5 On April 9th, Navy Yacht Club celebrates Opening Day and will have the opportunity to show off our great little Club so get that blue blazer out, and let's party! Please watch for flyers and s concerning a special event for the club supporting Sidewalk CPR. Members from Memorial Hospital, Long Beach will be at the club instructing Navy Yacht Club members on the tools needed to possibly save the life of a family member or fellow club member. It takes just 10 minutes to learn how to keep a cardiac arrest victim alive until paramedics arrive. Hands-Only CPR focuses on the first few minutes following a cardiac arrest, since the lungs and blood contain only enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for that amount of time. In addition to the CPR class, our club has purchased and will be installing an automated external defibrillator (AED), a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient. The AED is able to treat heart arrhythmias through defibrillation (the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia) allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. 7 Race Committee Chair Chris Mewes March was an exciting month for the Navy Yacht Club sailing/racing community and April is setting up to be active as well. Congratulations to the Navy Yacht Club skippers for representing the club in the SBYC Saturday Sailors Series: Chris Mewes, Shadowfax, 1st Place PHRF B Heinz Butner, Raptor, 3rd Place PHRF B Ben Smith, Renegade, 7th Place PHRF C Paul Turang, Dawn Patrol, 3rd Place PHRF D On April 16, Navy Yacht Club Long Beach is fielding a team for the 2016 Walt Elliott Harbor Challenge. The three races in the regatta will be sailed in the waters of the Long Beach Harbor. The host club is Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club; the Long Beach Sailing Foundation is supplying Catalina 37s for the regatta. April 2 nd is the first race of the "Long Beach Harbor Series" (LBHS) which is hosted by Little Ships Fleet Yacht Club (LSFYC), Navy Yacht Club Long Beach (NYCLB), and Shoreline Yacht Club (SYC). The series is designed to encourage competition, camaraderie and the free exercise of FUN for all participants. All six races take place in Long Beach Harbor. The Tuesday Senor Salty Sailors races continue to be a great way to spend an afternoon sailing. The March race results are listed below: March 1 st, 6 boats, course #3, 8.4 miles with breeze between 7 to 10 knots a fast pace race with lots of mark roundings, in first place Shadowfax followed by Radio Flyer, Bandit, MACS, Lulu and Callisto ll. March 8 th, 5 boats course #9, 8.8 miles with breeze between 11 and 20 knots a very fast pace race with lots of mark roundings, in first place Shadowfax followed closely by MACS, Callisto ll, Bandit and Amelieden. March 15th, 3 boats course #12, 7.3 miles in first place MACS, followed by Aura (formerly Kayak) and Callisto ll. March 22th, 2 boats, course #13, 8.8 miles with wind between 18 and 25 knots, in first place MACS, followed by Callisto ll. April 9 th is Opening Day. Hope to see you at the Club! The Scuttlebutt 7

9 Fleet Captain Hello Membership, Becky Martinez Over 20 members participated in this season s first Cruise-Out to Shoreline Yacht Club, March and, from the feedback, everyone had a great time! With so many restaurants and walking-distance attractions, everyone had plenty to do or nothing to do as they wished. On Saturday, members gathered for the Happy Hour and Appetizer Contest. There were four entries and all of them were superb. All contestants received a beach table and cooler lunch bags that were donated by CVS Pharmacy, as well as gift cards to Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt. First and second place winners also received gift cards to Trader Joe s. The results were: Debbie Neal First Prize for Asian Lettuce Wraps Cindy Baker Second Prize for Caprese Salad on a Stick Becky Rietdyk Third Prize for a Spicy Spread with Vegetable Crudities Camille D Esopo Fourth Prize for Artichoke Nibbles Thank you, ladies, for participating. It was fun and delicious!! And thank you, Nan and Nancy our judges, from Shoreline Yacht Club. While all of us were enjoying Happy Hour, many brave souls tackled the trivia contest prepared by Tony Rietkyk. Amidst groans and whiny comments about how difficult the questions were, a winner did emerge: Tom and Cindy Baker, they received a certificate for the clubs Ship Store. Hats off! Following the Happy Hour and Contests there was more eating and more drinking at Shoreline s Clubhouse. I must say, it had been quite a while since I d had dinner at Shoreline Yacht Club, and I could not have been more impressed! Everyone at my table and adjacent tables was delighted, not only with the food, but also with the service and the welcome we received from Shoreline s Flag and members. Whether the order was grilled fish, brisket, ahi salad, fish and chips, or something else, everyone I spoke to had nothing but praise for the food and the staff. Following dinner, some of us convened in the bar area for more drinks poured by bartender and NYCLB member Brenda Cuzzi. The Scuttlebutt 9

10 Sunday morning before returning home, most of us returned to the Clubhouse for more eating. Once again, we were delighted with the sumptuous brunch and warm hospitality. The weekend could not have occurred without the help of so many members. I want to especially thank the following: Lorne O Sullivan secured parking passes and monitored the gate to let members into Shoreline s parking lot. Phil Collins took care of all the boat credentials and documents, and slip assignments. Joyce Jackson provided Appetizer Contest table decorations in a last minute request. Tony Rietkyk prepared trivia game for Saturday afternoon. Our next Cruise-Out will be Memorial Day weekend, May when we will join with Marina Yacht Club for a Raft-up in Newport Beach. Mark your calendar now, and look for a flyer and with more information. And don t forget our Opening Day Cruise-In, April The long dock is reserved for Friday and Saturday nights. See you soon!
