2 Jeanne Stafford, Commodore Summer has almost come and gone with Labor Day already upon us. Summer seemed so much longer as a child. August was a great month at the club with the Annual Luau, roast pig and all. The Charity Regatta Brunch was a great way to end the month with wonderful attendance and support for our charity event. Thank you all who supported these events and made them successful. September s event is our End of Summer Beach Party at Barney s Beach House. This is a fun way to end the summer with friends and family. But like all great events this one has its planning challenges; since it s held at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, reservations are a MUST to get everyone on the base. The list of who is attending must be given to the guard station so we can enter the base and enjoy this beautiful day. Please contact Victor and RSVP. I would hate to have anyone miss this event because you couldn t get on the base. Please see the flyer for additional information on what else is needed for access to the base. Well, that s all I have for now so until next month, smooth sailing. Jeanne Stafford Commodore Victor Padilla, Vice Commodore Hello all, August is behind us and we had one heck of a time. Once again it was a party month. The Friday evening potluck dinners are a hit due to the warm weather and fantastic sunsets. If you have not yet joined us, I would suggest you put at least one Friday evening on your calendar, bring a dish, and sample some good food and conversation.. We also had a cruise out to American Legion Y.C. in Newport Beach, but I ll let the Fleet Captain say more about that cruise. The big-ticket item was the 6 th annual NYCLB Luau. It was a great success with about 60 people attending. The music by Barefoot Wahines was outstanding. Also Bill Plumlee did his magic again at roasting a whole pig. The pork meat was so tender and with all of the side dishes and desserts I think I ate way too much. Our bartenders Tommy Wheeler and Dale West mixed up the special for the day, Mai Tai s. On a side note, Tommy found about 10 different recipes for a Mai Tai drink. Tommy and Sylvia just so happened to have house guests and one person was from Hawaii. That person gave us his best rendition of the Mai Tai drink. The band even commented on the drinks saying they were the best they have tasted in some time. We just got home from the Charity Regatta Champagne Brunch. The weather at the start was a bit chilly but by 1:00 p.m. the sun came out and it was a beautiful day on the water.. Bill Plumlee and once again did a fine job of making omelets. We had over 50 guests for the event. Member Frank Farmer had the winning bid for the 10 inflatable with a small outboard engine. The $500 goes directly to the Children s Clinic of Long Beach. Our next event will be the BBQ at Barney s Beach House on the Naval Weapons Station. This will be held on September 29, which is a Sunday, and will start around 1:00 p.m. Remember, reservations are required for base access. Hope to see you there. 3 Navy Yacht Club Long Beach Racing The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. William A. Ward September is here and we ll be starting two races this month. The first one is the Blue Water Regatta hosted by both American Legion Yacht Club and Navy Yacht Club, racing to the Isthmus. The second one is the All Hands Race , also Race Three of the Long Beach Harbor Series. If you like ocean racing point to point, enter the BWR and meet us at Catalina. If you like buoy racing join us for the upcoming All Hands Race and the camaraderie, food and drinks at the Navy YC clubhouse after the race. Next month Navy YC will host the Navy Day Regatta with two races. The first one is a short sprint hopefully with a down wind leg back to the start/finish line. The second one will be a standard start with an inside finish by the Navy YC clubhouse. This regatta will be sponsored by Spicegirls, UK Sails and WestMarine, so there will be a variety of trophies and gifts to go around. S/C Tony Rietdyk Race Chairman Baked French Toast Casserole with Maple Syrup Ingredients 1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces) 8 large eggs 2 cups half-and-half 1 cup milk 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Dash salt Praline Topping, recipe follows Maple syrup Directions Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup. Praline Topping: 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1 cup chopped pecans 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Makes enough for Baked French Toast Casserole. P A G E 3

4 Tamara Carbonne, Staff Commodore The Navy Yacht Club Long Beach is still seeking qualified candidates for the 2014 Flag Officers or Directors. We need enthusiastic decision-makers who have the future of the NYCLB at heart and are willing to contribute their skills and time to support the club. Any regular, associate or lifetime member, or spouse of a regular or associate member, may hold elective office. Becoming a Director is a great starting place. The NYCLB has many qualified past officers and directors who will help new officers learn their responsibilities and duties. Get involved and provide constructive, creative and exciting new ideas as a member of the NYCLB 2014 Board of Directors. We have received requests from many qualified members to hold office. In September a list of candidates proposed by the nominating committee will be sent to you. It will also include a short paragraph listing reasons each candidate wants to be elected. Two Meet the Candidates evenings are scheduled at the club house. Friday, Sept. 20, beginning 6 pm Friday, Oct 18, beginning 6 pm Please attend to meet candidates, ask questions, and discuss what you want each to achieve as an officer or director. Since it is on Friday night, enjoy the potluck. We also expect nominees will be at our September and October socials so don t miss these coming events. This month we added our 19th new member for This is great news, as some clubs are dwindling in numbers and closing their doors. Speaking of closing doors Let s welcome David and Donna Bolding, who transferred from the Navy Yacht Club of Channel Islands after it closed. David and Donna, our doors are open to you. I would also like to welcome Ed and Noreen Angeles, who reside in Long Beach. They keep their power boat Mimie in Marina Pacifica. Frank and Lara Franco come to us from Little Ships Fleet where they are staff commodores. They are our 19th new member this year. We hope our three new member couples take an active roll in our club. We would love to meet you during one of our fun get togethers. Remember every Friday we have a pot luck dinner. Bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy all the wonderful food and camaraderie. Also, as members let s all seek out a new face, introduce ourselves, and make these new members feel welcome at our club. Bring in your friends to become members and join our fun and activities. There are openings for next year to plan and organize food for our activities. If you have new ideas for activities or food join in. If you like the established ways join in. Contact Tamara, Jeanne, Victor or myself and get involved. The food and beverages don t magically appear! Someone goes to the store, purchases, and carries items to the club and cooks. If you enjoy spending someone else's money, here is your chance. If you are a budding or practiced chef here is your chance. Come forward and let us know your are interested!
