TRED AVON YACHT CLUB OXFORD, MARYLAND Volume 65 No. 9 Founded 1931 October 2011 Commodore s Message We depend on Mother Nature to provide the winds of our sport, however, we were reminded over the past few weeks that while in measured doses her wind can be fun and challenging, in excess it can cause damage and a lot of grief. Several Friday evening storms and Hurricane Irene battered our club pretty severely and has had our Board of Governors working overtime. With the guidance of House and Grounds Chairman, Brud LaMotte, the Board has totally replaced the clubhouse roof, and has, as of mid-september, engaged a contractor to replace the club s broken flagpole and is currently weighing competing bids to repair the floating finger pier in the main basin, a casualty of Hurricane Irene. The good news is that the two major expenditures that we had been anticipating for the clubhouse; replacing the second floor deck and replacing the new roof, are now both complete and we do not have any foreseeable repair projects of their magnitude in the immediate future. The 57th Annual NASS Race and 50th Annual TAYC Hammond Regatta weekend was a tremendous success. We had 131 boats sail down from Annapolis in fresh NNE winds on Saturday. I hope you all had a chance to meet some of the outstanding Naval Academy midshipman who sailed down. I was reminded that many may soon be deployed in harm s way to protect our country and I was proud that TAYC could host them for such a fine regatta. Just a reminder that we have two TAYC club members that are participating in the 2012 Olympic Challenge, fighting for their chance to represent the United States in the 2012 Olympics. Please join me in supporting their endeavors by visiting their websites and contributing to their Olympic Challenge program. Jennifer Chamberlain - and Andrew Campbell - (See an excerpt from Andrew s website in this issue of the TIDE.) The Star Fall Wind Up starts our October sailing schedule with racing on the first weekend. The Star design is celebrating its 100th year! Come down and participate in the fun. The Shields and PHRF both finish up their fall series in October and the PHRF Skipper Race will be held on the 22nd. Our WND s, which have been very popular this year, continue thru the month, as will our Ales and Tales on Friday the 14th and the 21st. The monthly social calendar finishes up with our Adult Halloween party on Friday the 28th and the children s party on the 31st. I hope you enjoy the waning days of our sailing season and hope to see you on the water-front. Chris At The Next Mark October Sat. 10/1 Star Fall Wind-Up hrs. 2 MEMBERSHIP The Board of Governors has tentatively accepted for membership: Candidate: Spouse: Status: Proposer: Seconder: Charles Monet Diane Monet Resident Mike Menzies P/C Linda Laramy Charles and Diane are long-time sailors out of New Jersey. He started sailing Comets at Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club between 1981 and 1985, then a Marshall 22 from 1987 to He was a frequent day sailor in NY Harbor and Raritan Bay, and won the Sandy Hook Bay Catboat Race in He and Diane have done numerous week-long bareboat charters in the BVI, on the Chesapeake Bay, on Newport/ Narragansett Bay/Martha s Vineyard, Martinique and Grenada, and the Gulf Islands in British Columbia. They are currently sailing Up-Tempo, a 31 J/95 in the Friday night OARS, with Chrissie Dayton as crew. They have had a house here since 2007, though Charles is still working full time in NYC for Citigroup. During their time here, they have been very involved in the community in a number of local charities. Linda writes, They bring enthusiasm and commitment to all they take on... they will be active and exciting new members. Candidate: Spouse: Status: Proposer: Seconder: Will Chapman Heather Chapman Resident P/C Rollin Browne P/C Tot O Mara Will is well known to the membership of TAYC. He is the son of P/C Bill Chapman, has grown up in the club, and was an active and accomplished junior sailor. He used to drive himself to sailing class on an old 13-foot Boston Whaler. At a young age, he also crewed on a Lindenberg 28 Crabapple, co-owned by Jim Thompson and Bill Chapman, and then on Dr. Thomson s Swan Ariel. In high school, he took part in Block Island Race Week aboard Ariel, helping out on foredeck. His first offshore experience was at age 15 as part of a four-person delivery of Ariel from Bermuda to Oxford, and also delivered Ariel from Bermuda to Bel-
fast, Maine in Like his dad, Will has a knack for cooking at sea. In November, 2008, he was part of a crew of four under Commodore Chris Koch, delivering Moonraker to Eleuthera, Bahamas in heavy seas. He has also over the years participated in shorter deliveries, such as taking Ariel to Atlantic City, and raced on various PHRF boats from time to time though admittedly, not in recent years. When he met Heather in 1998, it turned out they both knew Mike Marshall; she trimmed the mainsail on Wednesday night races on the Miles River for his Pier Pressure. They began crewing together for several seasons. Will s real passion is riding the boards of the Chesapeake Bay Log Canoe Island Blossom, which he has been doing since In 2001 and 2002, he wrote a series of articles documenting log canoe racing for The Star Democrat. I caused us to capsize our first race, but have become an integral part of a crew that has been together 13 seasons now, winning several High Point trophies in the process. As I started sailing Blossom right out of college also around the time I met Heather I think they were both key factors in keeping me on the Eastern Shore. Few things are more unique and emblematic of our place on Earth than log canoes, a sport I consider nearly separate from all other types of sailing. I love their living history, their culture and the fascinating assortment of people who sail them, often travelling from afar and sacrificing a lot time to do so. I consider it an honor and a privilege, and I look forward to introducing Liam to the bail bucket one day, says Chapman. Tot O Mara writes, How could I not jump at the chance to do my part to keep an outstanding young man such as Will a full fledge member of our great yacht club? Will is the poster boy for the whole legacy to resident membership process. This is exactly how and why legacy was supposed to work. I look forward to having Will and his family in the club for a long time. Candidate: Status: Proposer: Seconder: Claire DeMarco Legacy P/C Doug Firth P/C Gus Koste Claire has sailed with her parents all of her life. She also attended Camp Seafarer, a sailing camp in North Carolina, for 8 summers. Most recently, she has been crew on the Shields her family owns with Bill and Suzanne Wade for the OARS Friday night races, and on Tom s Hinckley Pilot. Claire would like to broaden her sailing experience and make contact with others interested in the sport and would be willing to serve the club in any way. She is currently finishing a Masters in Health Systems Administration at Georgetown University. Doug Firth notes that Claire has always been interested in sailing and spending time on the water. She is a sharp young lady and I believe she will be a willing volunteer in all aspects of the club.
MEMBERSHIP continued... Candidate: Status: Proposer: Seconder: Cory dupont Legacy Tad dupont Andrew Parish Cory was an active member with the TAYC Jr. Sailing Program from with Optis and 420s, and early on began crewing with her family s log canoe and Cal 40, and continues today as a sail trimmer. Over the years, Cory has gained Blue Water experience under her belt with several Annapolis/Newport and Newport/Bermuda races on Nicole a Cal 40. Cory regularly participates in the Miles River Wednesday Night Series, and can be seen frequently crewing with the log canoe Island Lark She also has extensive teaching and coaching experience, first as a Jr. Sailing Instructor in the TAYC program in 2002 and In 2005, she was the Assistant High School Sailing Coach at Gunston Day School in Centreville. Between , Cory was a Senior Sailing Instructor in 420 s at the Wianno Yacht Club in Osterville, MA, and in 2010 at the Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels. She presently is Rear Commodore with Chesapeake Bay Log Canoe Sailing Association. Candidate: Spouse: Status: Proposer: Seconder: Dave Menotti Anne Menotti Resident Ed Delaney Leonard Shaffer Dave grew up in the Syracuse area. His sailing resume, in short, starts with lots of hours in Lightnings, including sailing in the North American Championship regatta twice. He was the mainsheet/spinnaker man on a series of boats owned by a long-time skiing and sailing buddy, which they campaigned for several summers. He still owns two Lightnings (one here and one in upstate NY). Add to that a fair amount of time in other small stuff. Anne s family owns a boatyard in Mantoloking, NJ, which was founded by her Grandfather in the 20 s, run
by her Dad for most of his life, and now is run by her youngest brother. David S. Beaton & Sons has quite a reputation on the Jersey Shore and beyond, really; they built racing dinghies (Comets, Lightnings & Sneak-boxes), and did repairs on wooden boats and spars, even back in the days when nobody wanted to fool around with wood. More recently, Anne s cousin Mark Beaton opened Beaton Sails there. At the TAYC regatta last year, several of the Comets had jibs by Beaton Sails. Her dad s most noteworthy accomplishment, however, was saving the Barnegat Bay A Cat fleet (28 foot, Marconi-rigged catboats). Currently living in Potomac, the Menotti s bought Keith Lockwood s house next door to Gus Koste and the Shaffers in Then, with their son Alex, they bought Todd Taylor s Columbia 29 Tangaroa, and enjoy cruising on the Choptank mostly on weekends. Betty Anderson and Gerry O Mara have known David for the past thirty-five years when they all worked together in the early days of US EPA. David continues as an accomplished environmental attorney with Crowell-Moring in Washington, while Anne has a private practice as a clinical psychologist. The candidacy of these prospective members will be posted on the Clubhouse bulletin board for at least 28 days as required by the Club s Bylaws. 6 Website Excerpt: Olympic Hopeful, Andrew Campbell Ian Coleman and Andrew Campbell turn upwind back to RSGYC after racing. September 12, 2011 We arrived home from two weeks in Ireland yesterday to a warm and sunny United States. Two hurricanes have wreaked havoc on the east coast while we were gone. Yet, to some extent we felt some of both as we couldn t race on one day of the regatta because of the remnants of Irene and were jostled for a few hours on the plane yesterday thanks to Katia. The regatta was an all around success for the club and the class. Ian and I managed to make a small comeback on the final day of racing to take 9th in the event. Though the regatta had a bumpy start thanks to three out of four days with gale force winds, the Royal St. George Yacht Club put on a wonderful event and completed their series on time against the elements and the odds. Spending time ashore during postponements actually allowed us to enjoy and explore the great facilities of the club. Its testimony to a good sailing club that one can welcome 60 or more large sailors from all over the world just to hang around and clog up the internet while nervously leering out the rain soaked windows at the gale outside. More than once club members expecting a leisurely Tuesday afternoon lunch and Guinness were quite surprised by the crowd of conspicuously oversized men speaking Ukrainian, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Scandinavian or American-English making good use of the house bar and dining rooms. In exploring the place we did get a chance to see an amazing history of the club dating back to an era when America was just a young country much less one with established yacht clubs. The neighborhood in Dun Laoghaire was a bustling suburb of Dublin lined with tall Georgian row-houses and the odd Irish palm frond. The place is well worth a visit if you ever get the chance. The club is renowned for their team racing, Dragon and SB3 fleets. There are but a handful of Star sailors from the area, and their efforts to attract the fleet were hard fought. The membership could not have been more hospitable and accommodating to the sailors at the regatta. We used the facilities as if they were our own and are indebted to the locals efforts to host such an event. Although, the usual local response to bad weather tag-line Geez, it s never a gale for four days in a row! was under serious suspicion from the sailors. These next couple months will be very important for the success of our campaign as we ramp up towards the World Championships in Perth in December. This event has been a good stepping stone with our equipment to prepare us for how to train between now and then. But we are glad to be back from a cold season in Europe. We traveled back and forth for 4 regattas including a 6th at Palma, 6th in Hyeres, 15th in Weymouth and now 9th in Ireland. It sure will be nice to race in some warm water for the fall here in the States! As you may have noticed, I experimented with a more live-update style via twitter during the regatta to augment my regular website updates with short notes and photos from the regatta scene. I know that regatta and club live updates are becoming a better and better way to watch and get the inside scoop about regattas as they happen. I ll try and continue to do that in the future as well. Check it if you re so inclined. More to come from
UNDER THE OIL LAMP Close To The Wind: The Beaufort Scale By: Peter Malone One afternoon while shopping in "Crackerjacks" and trying to offset the haul of toys that Fletcher was accumulating, I decided to sit down and prowl through all of the books that P/C Linda Laramy has in her shop. I happily discovered this book and decided it would serve as that literary offset I was searching for, as well as introduce Fletcher to the Beaufort Scale (I had to be proficient in it during my doctoral work in oceanography while standing watch on the bridges of NOAA research vessels). The Beaufort Scale is a carefully graduated scale that was used to describe the wind conditions at a time when no devices existed for quantitatively measuring wind speed (It is still in use today after 201 years by shipping companies as well as on BBC News world weather summaries). Captain Francis Beaufort of the Royal Navy took five years ( ) of careful observations of the effect of wind on the sea surface, on land, and conditions on board a Man-of-War. What made his scale revolutionary is that it was simple, ranging from numbers 0 to 12, and based on observations all officers and crew could understand. This wonderfully-illustrated book follows the letters home of a crew member on board a Royal Navy Man-of- War, with the ship's location and corresponding Beaufort Scale rating (the page opposite has an excellent painting depicting the effects of the corresponding Beaufort Scale rating and it's effect on the ship and it's crew). This is an excellent book to add to your Junior Sailor's library (or to your own for that matter to brush up on, or learn for the first time, the brilliantly simple and time-tested Beaufort Scale). Brian S. Parsons Nominations are now being accepted for the William H. Corkran, Jr. Race Management Award This award was established in 2005 to honor those special few Tred Avon Yacht Club members who have over the years shown exceptional talents and leadership as race committee members at all levels of racing sponsored by the Tred Avon Yacht Club. The award honors William Corkran, whose organizational skills and firm leadership served the club in many ways. Rules: 1. The award is open to any member living or dead who has a long history of exemplary race committee work. The award is for superior service over time not just for a recent job well done. There may be no more than one living and one posthumous inductee in any one year. 2. Nominations will be accepted from any member regardless of board or officer status. 3. Nominations must be submitted in writing to the Secretary by October 1, The nomination should itemize the race committee work performed by the nominee and include a narrative summarizing the nominee s strengths that could be read at the presentation. 4. The Board of Governors will review all nominations. The board is not required to make any awards if they feel the nominations are inadequate. If the Board votes for a winner, the Commodore will make the announcement at the Annual meeting. A plaque with all winners names will be displayed in the clubhouse. Let s recognize the best of the best now!
Junior Sailing School is back in session for all juniors by now and summer regattas have come and gone. Although this is true, please keep in mind the fall and winter regattas I ve mentioned in recent s. There are great sailing adventures still possible in the months ahead to keep your junior on the water enjoying the sport! Since June, I ve received lots of wonderful feedback about this summer s junior sailing program and have decided to implement two changes for next summer. The needs and interests of our junior sailors continue to grow. It turns out that a full day of sailing is just not enough for many juniors, and Introduction to Sailing needs to expand! Next summer, Private and Semi-Private Lessons will now be available with the coach of your choice after regular instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3 6 p.m. Introduction to Sailing will provide an afternoon session for families who are balancing summer tutoring, other half-day summer camps, or who simply get wait-listed because this course fills quickly. The coaches and I are excited about the increased sailing opportunities that these changes will bring for juniors. Look online for more details about these changes in the weeks to come. See you on the water! Scott Williamson, Director TAYC Jr. Sailing Program FOS Happenings Practice does make perfect! Our spinnaker clinic was great and had amazing results in our afternoon races. Thank you to Amy Gross Kehoe and all participants. We are looking forward to a beautiful day with spinnakers flying for this year s FOS Championship Regatta on Saturday, October 15th. Skippers Meeting starts at 0900 hrs. Racing will continue on Monday nights, but have an earlier starting time of 1730 hrs. through October 17th. We hope all FOS members will join us on October 17th to celebrate the 2011 sailing year and for the High Point trophy presentation. For more information, contact Georgia Adler at Marblehead to Halifax The Tred Avon Yacht Club had a number of members participate in the bi-annual Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race this past July. Jack Yaissle s IMX 40 Amadeus took part in the race with TAYC members Sewell Cox, Mike Marshall, Eric Crawford, Eddie Crawford, Bill Stevenson, Jack and John Devlin and onboard. TAYC s Henner Gibbons-Neff was also aboard the classic NY 32 Falcon in PHRF Class 4 and Scott Gibbs was racing on the 75 foot Bella Pita owned by Oxford resident Jim Grundy. The 360 mile Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race (first raced in 1905) from the starting line takes the fleet on an almost easterly heading across the Gulf of Maine. As you approach Cape Sable at the southeastern tip of Nova Scotia the most important consideration becomes the tides (as strong as 6-7 knots). Although the famous Bay of Fundy (with world record tides) is on the west side of Nova Scotia, the water that feeds the Bay wraps around the bottom of Nova Scotia and must be crossed by the fleet. Much like crossing the Gulf Stream in the Newport Bermuda Race, the navigation through this part of the race is critically important and can be very tricky. In 2009, the fleet (which included TAYC yachts Bella Aurora, Bingo and Relativity) struggled in light NE breezes for days and a number of yachts were carried away from the rhumb line by those strong tides (and eventually forced to retire from the race). After punching through those currents you must leave Cape Sable Lighthouse and Brazil Rock to port and head up the east coast of the island to a finish off the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax Harbor. If you can get any kind of breeze from the south, the trip to Halifax can be a drag race up the coast and (unlike 2009) that is exactly what happened this year. Henner Neff reported that his yacht had southerly conditions knots all the way up the racecourse with a spinnaker flying from the beginning to the end. Bella Pita (with Scott Gibbs onboard) was the first yacht to finish and shattered the elapsed time record with a finish time of 30 hours & 36 minutes (breaking the previous record by 3 hours!). She also placed second in IMS 1 on corrected time. Jack Yaissle s Amadeus finished in 42 hrs. 52 min. and corrected to a 5th place finish in PHRF 1. The NY 32 Falcon (with Henner Neff onboard) finished in 46 hrs/16 min and corrected 1st in PHRF Class 4 and first in ORR fleet. Congratulations to all the participants from TAYC.
TAYC Happenings Captain Polly Cox wore two hats for our Spinnaker Clinic serving on the Race Committee and racing in the last two races. Thank you Polly!
