2 P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner / Tony Kraus Annika Bruno really enjoyed her first sailing experience. It s already June, and the summer lake season is in full swing. We had an outstanding turnout of people to help with spring clean-up. TGIF s have been well attended, the sailing season is underway, and overall, it is shaping up to be another memorable summer at CLYC. Thanks to Sandy Ayers for her hard work to make TGIF s an outstanding success. Chad and Hope Korte are doing an excellent job with bar management. The board approved running power and phone lines under the road. It is now possible to raise masts in the parking lot and move boats to the water for launching only when they are ready. The Hog Wild Regatta held June 7 and 8 was a wonderful success in part due to this improvement at the club. New steps to the bar entrance are complete thanks to Brownie. There are 138 paid memberships so far. This is a good number for the club at this point in the year but there are still many who have yet to pay. SEND YOUR DUES NOW! Sailing Camp a Great Success!!! Some of the Sailing Camp 2008 participants: Stephanie Schenkel Coach Jack, Coach Isaiah, Erin Sanderson, Seth Grant, Jonathon Moss, Allison Thomas, Coach Jim, Patrick Moss, Rudy Koesters, Coach Zach, Michael Moss, Annika Bruno, Silas Grant, Tanner Grant, Daniel Frank, Colin Beery, Madison Stenger, and Ian Grant (Coaches George and Stan were on the water with Ellen and Phil Miller) Nineteen students spent three days (June 11-13) at CLYC learning sailing. We had great wind (sometimes too much) so a great time was had by all. The first day we practiced capsize and recovery and reaching control. The second day we moved to windward/ leeward work and proper tacking technique. The third day we practiced starts and held several races across the lake. The participants were: Ellen and Phil Miller, Rudy Koesters, Tanner, Zack, Ian, Silas, Isaiah and Seth Grant, Stephanie Schenkel, Erin Sanderson, Colin Beery, Daniel Frank, Allison Thomas, Madison Stenger, Annika Bruno, and Michael, Patrick and Jonathon Moss. We owe a big THANK YOU to the four coaches: Stan Robinson, George Schenkel, Jack Sanderson, and Jim Grant. Isaiah and Zach Grant also served as student coaches. The Sailing School needs Sunfish or Force Fives! We have some money but remember that we are a 501C qualified organization so tax deductions for donations are possible. Please contact Jim Grant (iyi@verizon.net or ) if you have an unused boat. From the Tennis Courts The tennis courts are ready for play! We're hoping to have Leo Weber and Barb Wenger back to teach our youth (dates to follow). And our annual steak/ lobster tennis social will be an event not to be missed! (date TBD). Contact us with ideas or needs regarding tennis at CLYC. Megan Morris bobmegnyc@yahoo.com or Susan Kramer tekramer@msn.com or

6 P A G E 6 Social Stuff We are all thrilled that the Friday Night TGIF parties have become so popular and it is wonderful that we now enjoy a larger membership. Some of you have probably noticed we have made a few changes to the program. Friday nights are now going to have a host and a committee of their choosing. They pick the theme and arrange for the dinner. All Friday nights are now booked and there is an exciting calendar for the summer. Attendees do not have to bring a passing entrée or appetizer unless requested by the host. Some events will require a reservation and this is very important to the success of the event. As a member, your family is welcome and the host should be notified if you have several children or grandchildren attending. All Friday nights are open to yacht club members only; there are no events open to the public. Some hosts are still looking for committee assistance so give the host a call and offer your help if you would like to get in on the fun. JUNE 20 PASTA NIGHT Hosted by Eric & Kit Tyler Wonderful Italian pastas, garlic bread and great salad! JUNE 27 ALL AMERICAN NIGHT Hosted by the Kaufmans and the Schaveys. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Sign up at the Yacht Club. JULY 4 NO TGIF Happy Fourth of July to all! JULY 11 NO HOST APPETIZERS This Friday is followed by the big Kasota Island Celebration on Saturday. Those wishing to go to a TGIF should bring a dish or appetizer to pass and pop in to socialize with friends and enjoy a drink and a munchee. JULY 18 FUN IN HAWAII (Kids, Parents, Grandparents) Hosted by Karen Hughes. Committee Chris Hughes, Tracy McArdle, Tom & Judy Snyder, Jerry & Dianne McArdle. Great food, fun & games for all the children in your family, the parents and the grandparents! 6
7 V O L U M E 7 3, N O 2 P A G E 7 The Hog Wild Regatta The MC Scows We had 7 MC Scows for 2 days of really good wind (some would say a bit more than "good") for racing. Matt Grant from Maxinkukee Lake finished second in the MC class in spite of 4 capsizes (three in one race). Jack Sanderson with granddaughter Erin and Jim Grant with grandson Tanner were nearly evenly matched but the Sanderson duo very intelligently declined to race when the wind reached extreme levels. Isaiah and Zach Grant used the event to practice their capsize (turtle) recovery abilities. Zach did finish one race single handing the boat -- Isaiah never did. But Isaiah did double hand with Zach for a third and a fourth (he skippered the boat for the fourth place finish). Bridgett McCardle with her "soon to be" husband sailed the first two races on Saturday. Megan sailed the third. Then father Jack sailed on Sunday and was in second place (and gaining on Jim Grant and Tanner) on the last leg of race 5 when he capsized and turned turtle. Bob Buddig (of the Buddig Meat Company) came down from Indian Lake to sail with us and earned third place in the event. He sailed a very sensible regatta, never capsizing and always finishing. Results follow: Pl Last Name First Name Club/St Sail # 1 Grant Jim CYC/IN Grant Matthew MYC/IN Buddig Bob ILYC/MI McCardle Bridgett CYC/IN Sanderson Jack CYC/IN Grant Zach CYC/IN Grant Isaiah CYC/IN The C Scows Ten C Scows participated in this year's Hog Wild Regatta. There were 5 excellent races in winds from 12 to 24 mph! There was close competition with quite a few capsizes. Our own John and Sean Cochran came away with the first place trophy. Two Lake Fenton boats (Tom Kennan and son with help from our own Rudy Koesters and Ken Seamon with Bill DeCoste crewing) finished 2nd and 3rd. Don Wagner with crew Matt and wife Dinah finished 4th -- they traveled all the way from Davenport, Iowa, for the races! 8 The WindWard We re On the Web From the Sailing Chairman / Chris Hughes The Club Championship Racing Results Posted below are race results through June 16. Participation has been excellent and racing has been very competitive. May 24 June 14 Wednesday Night Racing Three boats have shown up for each of the first three Wednesday night races. These races are quite informal there is no race committee and indeed, results are not even recorded. We just want to have fun. If you want to learn to race or test your expertise, come join us any Wednesday at 5:00 PM. Kids on the lake are welcome! From: Jim Grant 1220 Lake Drive Clear Lake Fremont, IN TO: 8
