1 At the Helm Commodore Dan Robinson The photo on this page showing the rainbow seemingly ending at our new Beach House is a great metaphor for our lifelong search for that pot of gold. It is often found in our own back yard. Jeff Kremlick took that photo and sent it to me with the subject line: Pot of Gold! Thanks to Jeff for the great shot and caption. I m sure our Beach House will be golden for us for many years to come. I had the privilege of announcing the Grand Opening of the Beach House at our July 4 th party. That, along with the celebration of our 60 th Anniversary made it a special day. Thanks to Emery Clark and the entire Entertainment Committee for a great party and a great day. Also, thanks to Diane Augsburger, CSCA, and Jim Edwards, our artist in residence, for the commemorative Anniversary T-shirts. 60 th I d also like to pass on a story given to me by Alecia Milling. A handwritten note Change in Back Cove Entry Fee Policy! By order of the Board of Stewards, members must pay the back-cove entry fee in full upon the assignment of a slip. In the past, members had the option of paying the back-cove fee in quarterly installments over a two-year period. That installment option is no longer available! This policy change is effective immediately. Page 1

2 with a $20 bill was delivered via USPS to the club recently. The note read, I grabbed a T-Shirt at the Easter Regatta and had no cash on me at the time. I was informed it was $20 so I got this address to pay. Sorry for the late payment! The note was signed by Sam Croft of Riverton, NJ. As Alecia pointed out, Sam could have kept the shirt and not paid for it, but he was honest enough, and had the character, to do the right thing. It s good people like Sam that make the sport of sailing what it is. I hope he returns for next year s Easter Regatta so that we can show our appreciation. Enjoy the rest of your summer. 3 The Vice Report Vice Commodore Jan Jernigan Membership Welcome New Provisional Members! We have added three great new provisional members to to our roster: Rich Horton is sponsored by Robert Key. Rich attended CSC Summer Camp about 30 years ago. He and his lovely wife, Amanda Horton, have four children between them, Jack, Anna, Luke and Zerick. The three oldest have participated in CSC summer camp. Rich is in sales with Wago. He enjoys sailing his Sunfish regularly. The entire family is excited about being involved in sailing and social activities at CSC! Juanita Wright is sponsored by Maria DeHart. Juanita is CEO of a local non-profit organization, Welvista. She has done an amazing job leading Welvista. They provide hope and wellness to the uninsured by providing access to prescription medications. Her husband, Ben Wright, is a radiation oncology doctor with SC Oncology Associates. Ben is also a great chef. They are thrilled to become part of the CSC family. They have one son, Colby Wright, who is married to Mandy Wright. They hope to get their 6- year old grandson, Xander, in next year s CSC Summer Camp. Ben Simons has wonderful memories of CSC, where he learned to sail as a youth. Years ago, he represented CSC in the SAYRA Bemis Youth Semi-finals. The Simons family is well-known at our club. His brother, Arthur Simons, III, is his sponsor. Ben and his lovely wife, Tracy Simons, are eager to become involved at our club. He is hoping to reconnect with old friends at CSC. Ben has sailed on Sunfish, Lasers, 420 s, Y-Flyers, just to name a few. He is a Jack of all Trades and is looking forward to sharing his talents with CSC. New Applications for Membership Great news! Applications for outstanding new members have been coming in quickly. Meet two new applicants, Colin Widener and Stephen Antworth. Colin Widener is being sponsored by David Oliver. Colin and his delightful wife, Rebecca, have two children. He is a physician with Providence Hospital. Colin grew up in Beaufort, SC sailing Sunfish and a Pearson 28. He attended Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club camp each summer. He has barefoot sailed in the Grenadines and San Juan Islands. I have heard he can cook a mean Frogmore Stew! Page 3

4 Stephen Antworth is being sponsored by David Parshall. Stephen sails an F18 sailboat (Formula 18) regularly. He has been sailing many years and raced in numerous regattas. He works at Waters Sails. Stephen says that he will be happy to help CSC with boat maintenance and on race committee. He is looking forward to regular sailing and joining the social activities at CSC. Please say a warm hello to our prospective and new provisional members! Jan 2017 Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017 Columbia Sailing Club will be a great place to observe the 2017 Solar Eclipse! The Club does not have any special plans but bring your refreshments & approved glasses and enjoy this rare event from CSC. The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore David Mosely July has been a tough month for dinghy sailing, but last night s (Thursday, July 21 st ) sailing renewed the balance of frustrating winds and lifted the spirits of the sailors. As a WISTV videographer joined us on the water, the winds supplied 4 races and great competition. Big thank you s to John and Rebecca Dotterer, Bill and Pat Freeman, and Mark Alexander for always helping us on RC for these Thursday nights events. Ryan (our videographer) even got on Margaret Clarkson s Sunfish and cut a few laps during the race! As the LMYRA season heats up, we are seeing some new faces and plenty of competition. Thanks to Bruce Seiffert and all the LMYRA crew for bringing sailing to our lake between our own CSC events. Speaking of those, we are beginning plans for the Fall Classic and the Midlands regattas. The Midlands Regatta will be dinghy only, and a qualifier for the Sunfish North Americans. We also hope to bring the SAYRA kids there as well, so we are looking for help with planning, race management, and logistics on and off the water to pull off a great event. To all our provisional members: This is a great opportunity to check off some of those requirements, and a great way to be involved in sailing and CSC. I hope to see you on the water soon! Page 4

6 CSC Auxiliary News President Kim Milling What happened to the days when summer seemed to last forever? Sure the heat will still be around awhile longer but all too soon school will start and summer activities will slow. But alas, there is plenty to look forward to in the coming months. The last Thursday night dinghy race is August 3. Come join the fun, watch the races, enjoy a cool drink and share a great meal with friends. Thank you to all who prepared the delicious dinners we all enjoyed on Thursday evenings over the past couple of months. It is very much appreciated! 6:30 p.m. Bring your own Meat, Fish, or Fowl to Grill and we ll cook the side dishes, oh and of course dessert, all this and a great evening for the low cost of $6.00/person. The due date for payment is on or before August 7, If payment is not received by that date, a 5% late fee will be added to your bill. Your payment must be in the hands of the Treasurer or the Bookkeeper by that date...the postmark date does not count! Last minute payments can be left in the cigar box in the canteen! There is no need to include a copy of your invoice with your payment if you are paying the total amount due. Do include your invoice number in the memo section of your check.
