At the Helm Commodore Jan Jernigan Someone once said, things possible May. great All seem in Many things are possible in May at the Columbia Sailing Club! Plan to come out to join in or just watch our Spring Dinghy Races on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. LMYRA has two fun island races this month. Our new Sailing Director, David Van Cleef, has worked hard to get members old and new, along with some good prospective members out on the water sailing. If you haven t looked at our new website yet, please do so. You are in for a treat! You will be very impressed by the design and ease of navigation of the new and improved columbiasailingclub.org. David Van Cleef, Margaret Clarkson and Pete Gindhart have done a fabulous job on this website! Club member Craig Ness is Operations Manager at SCETV in Sumter. He came out during the Easter Regatta to do a nice piece on the regatta entitled Easter Regatta Highlights Midlands Crown Jewel. He brought a drone and got some beautiful footage of our club, as pictured in this newsletter and on our new website. Check it out! Just a reminder Invoices for the CSC Quarter dues and fees were mailed early in April! The due date for payment is on or before May 11, If your payment is not received by that date, a 5% late fee will be added to your bill. Your payment must be in the hands of the Treasurer or the Bookkeeper by that date...the postmark date does not count! Last minute payments can be left in the cigar box in the canteen! There is no need to include a copy of your invoice with your payment if you are paying the total amount due. Do include your invoice number in the memo section of your check. 2 The Past Commodores & Past Presidents Party is Saturday May 12 th at 6:30pm. This is a favorite party for many of us and a chance to honor those Past Commodores of CSC and Past Presidents of CSCA for all they have done to make our club excellent. These are folks who served the club in leadership roles over the past 61 years. We will have some delicious food to enjoy and an esteemed group in attendance. This is such a special event, so plan to be part of it. Past Commodores and Past Presidents Party You are invited to an evening honoring Past Commodores of the Columbia Sailing Club and Past Presidents of the Columbia Sailing Club Auxiliary Many of you knew Joe Sinnett, a beloved club member who passed away peacefully last November. He is survived by his daughter, Vicki, and a son, Chris, married to Kathy, three granddaughters, and his brother James. The family is having a Celebration of Life in his memory on Thursday, May 24 th at 6:30pm at our clubhouse. If you have any special stories about Joe, plan to share them with us. We are asking those who are able to bring food maybe an appetizer or something sweet. All club members and friends of Joe s are invited so please plan to come honor this fine man s memory. He was a dedicated member who loved the Columbia Sailing Club! Many thanks go to all of you who pitched in to make April such a remarkable month at CSC. From the Easter Regatta, Spring Dinghy Racing, the Grill Your Own, to the Lightning Regatta, we had a fantastic month! Let s make May another exciting month at CSC! 3 THE VICE REPORT Vice Commodore David Mosely Wednesday, April 18 th, was an amazing night of dinghy racing at CSC! Many thanks to all who came out and helped with the race committee and to those who sailed. We had a beautiful evening and the wind was blowing! I want to recognize Al and Beverly Whitworth for providing us with dinner and for making this a fund-raising event for the Clemson Sailing Team who has had some recent financial difficulties. With the help of Beverly Whitworth, John Hudson, Dawn Fellers and Uno s Pizzeria, we were able to raise over $250 for Clemson Sailing. Additional contributions from members raised the total to over $700. While Al may have a hard time saying, Go Gamecocks! he is proud that CSC and its members have helped both USC and Clemson University Sailing! New Members Lots of things are happening with membership at our club. We have three new perspective members; one will come up for a vote in May. The other two should follow shortly afterward. Some of these new contacts came directly from efforts of our new sailing director and his CSC team at the West Marine grand opening. Other prospects have reached out to us after seeing our website and receiving information from our junior camp media blitz. Our CSC brand is getting out there and people are excited to learn about membership opportunities here at CSC. The prospective member mentioned above is Mike Ping who, along with his family, were captivated by our club when they came to buy a Helms 27 out of the back cove. He sought out membership information right away. Mike is married to Holly and they have five children (Seabrook, Naia, Ceci, Marlow, and Michael) ranging in age from infant to nine years. He and his family live in Rock Hill. Mike, a Clemson graduate electrical engineer, is sponsored by Peyton Hassinger. Although Mike has little sailing experience, he does have lots of boating experience including multiple offshore adventures. Mike s wife Holly is from French Polynesia. Mike spent a year in nearby Tahiti where he admired the sailboats. Mike wants to sail someday in the South Pacific with his family. He also wants to get their children involved in the CSC sailing camps. Hopefully the children will love sailing and will become active members of the youth sailing program at CSC. Mike has an acre of young muscadine vines and 200 blueberry bushes! He built a 22ft wooden canoe and is interested in learning about wooden boat building. Finally, Mike says he is horrible at golf and is not related to the golfing Pings! Its hard for me to talk about anything other than the sailing that is going on at CSC! I know I am stepping on Bruce's toes, but with the incredible racing here at our club, LMYRA, and at Charleston Race Week, this has been an exciting spring for our sailors. There are more opportunities for you to get on the water this year by taking advantage of a club Sunfish available to members for dinghy racing. If Page 3
you would like to race on Wednesday night, contact David Van Cleef to arrange to use a club boat. Lastly, I want to thank those members who have greeted and been super nice to the new prospective members that I have brought around in the last few weeks. They have all been impressed with the friendliness and camaraderie you have shown them. Showing hospitality to our visitors in this way grows our club s future membership and helps continue the traditions we have enjoyed as members of this fantastic club! Thank you! See you on the water! David The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert Well it has been a very unusual Spring with warm > cold > hot > then cool weather again One thing is for sure: It has been breezy! This has meant great racing conditions. The Easter Regatta enjoyed two days of mph winds getting in 8 races and the last day, one race with shifty 5 mph winds totaling 9 races which thrilled all skippers. Per the norm, Charles Bumgardner was Regatta Chairman again and did a fantastic job. He was supported by Kim Milling, CSC Auxiliary Past- President, Admiral Dommel and his RC crew, as well as the Gamecock Sailing Team which continues to shine for CSC. LMYRA had one Island Race that was supposed to be blustery but ended up being a wet drifter. LMYRA has three races remaining with the season ending May 12 th and Summer Series beginning June 9 with evening Race 1 with all races being reverse starts. By the time this goes to press we will have had the Spring Invitational Lightning Regatta on April th with 20+ boats scheduled to compete and will share more on this in the next Telltale edition. We had our first Spring Dinghy Series race on April 18 th with nine Skippers signing up and seven Skippers on the water in mph winds which needless to say insured us of some exciting races. Stanley Hassinger led the way in Lasers and David Parshall led the way for the Sunfish Fleet. Thanks to Dick Dommel, Michael Kapp, Ted Koberg, David Mosely and Bob Beauregard for running RC; without them we do not sail. If you want to spend an enjoyable evening on the water I encourage you to be part of the Race Committee as it is fun, a way to give back and some great fellowship on the porch after sailing. Al Whitworth provided pizza and dessert after racing with proceeds being donated to the Clemson University Sailing Team that is getting their program back to normal. We have Wednesday evening races scheduled from April 25 th May 23 rd with first gun at 6:30PM. Most of you know we are purchasing nine Open Bics that have all been pre-sold to our membership and we qualified for a 10 th one free but, have chosen to receive, covers, dollies, blades and other spare parts in lieu of the 10 th boat. This decision insures us the ability to maintain these boats as they should be maintained. The Open Bics will be a tremendous addition to our Junior Sailing Program which is a six week program this year versus the traditional two week programs offered in the past. If you have not been on the new website I encourage you to do so and tell your friends about the Junior Sailing programs being offered. As Jan noted in her , Page 4
we are selling seven Sunfish (two sold), a few dollies (one sold) and a San Juan 21 with all proceeds going back into the Junior Sailing program. If you are interested in any more information or if you know of friends that may be interested, please contact David VanCleef, our Sailing Director, or reach out to me. Thanks and see you on the water!!! Bruce CSC Auxiliary News President Diane Augsburger Easter has come and gone and we are now racing into the month of May on a gale of graduations, recitals, weddings, and a whole host of other events that keep us busy through June. I m looking forward to the expansion of our education program and wish David Van Cleef the best with new CSC endeavors. The CSC Auxiliary has sponsored ½ of a new Bic in support of the junior sailing program. If you see Bruce and Lorraine Seiffert, please thank them for their work in getting the bathhouse blinds selected and installed. We sincerely appreciate everyone who attends our fundraisers and we look forward to continuing efforts in support of our fabulous facility and new membership! The Grill Your Own on Friday, April 20 was well-attended and members were enjoying the warm and welcoming atmosphere until 9:30. This speaks well for our hosts, Bill and Pat Freeman, and the general hospitality of our club. Thank you to those in attendance and those who helped clean up. Tuesday, May 8 th, at 7 pm a CSCA meeting will be held with the pre-meeting meal at 6:30, compliments of Kim Milling and Diana Wrisley. We hope you will join us, meet some new friends, and support our club with your ideas and talents. This will be our last meeting for the spring season. Meetings will resume in September. Saturday, May 12, will be the Annual Past Commodores and Past Presidents Party with BYOB cocktails at 6:30 and awards at 7 pm. We hope you will offer to bring your delicious heavy hors d'oeuvres and look forward to seeing you there to honor members and carry on our CSC traditions. Diane Page 5
From the Sailing Director David Van Cleef It has been a busy month at CSC! Thank you to all that have registered youth for the 2018 Junior Summer Program. We still have room for more so please continue to share with your family and friends. For more information and to register, visit the Junior Sailing tab on our website. I am excited to share that CSC has been accepted into the West Marine Affiliate Program. This will give up to 5% of sales back to CSC when items are purchased through the program online or in the store. Click on the West Marine Affiliate Program banner on the bottom of our website page for more information. Registration is now open for Women on the Water (WOW) beginning on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM in June. Page 6
Sign up for four nights of sailing and socialization with women and taught by women instructors on club-owned 420 s. This laid back course will not emphasize racing but will focus on camaraderie on the water. For more information and to register, please visit the Sailing menu tab on our website. Please start thinking of anyone you would like to invite to our sailing Open House on May 19, 2018, from 1:00-4:00pm. Bring prospective members for a mini boat show, cookout, boat rides and beach games. A flyer can be found on the Event Calendar tab of our website. Add some weekday racing and relaxation with a new PHRF Wednesday Night Summer Series beginning June 13 th at 6:30pm. Boats will start off no wind point, race to a drop mark and come back to finish in front of the club. The series will run 10 weeks, June 13 through August 22, and will feature post-race snacks, libations and video of racing. Mix up the work week by joining us! Registration and details can be found on the CSC website under the Sailing/Racing/PHRF menu tab.
