1 the Telltale the Telltale Summer 2014 Is Almost Gone A lot has happen since the last issue of the Telltale. The Summer Dinghy Series is behind us, and was very popular with both sailors and our members and guests who joined us for food and fellowship. We had a cooking class, a wonderful patriotic 4th of July feast and celebration, and Robert Key entertained us with tales of ocean racing. Now it s time to start our busy fall season. Sailing events include the Outback Regatta, the Midlands Regatta, the SC State Laser Championships, and of course LMYRA s fall series. Friday Happy Hours are always good times to join our friends, and we have many other social events coming up, including an End of Summer Ice Cream Social, our Annual Meeting and our famous Oyster Roast. Please join us at these functions, and we always need volunteers to help staff these events, both on and off the water. 2 At The Helm Commodore Beth Mathias! Great friends, great food, and fabulous fireworks! Thanks to everyone for attending our annual Fourth of July Party and for bringing your favorite dishes. Have you ever seen such food! Amber Parshall and David Phillips and helpers worked hard for days to plan, cook, and host our celebration. The barbecue and chicken were the best! And the snow cones were a hit. Please take time to thank Amber and Diamond Dave for organizing one of our larger events about 140 people enjoyed the day.! Sail Camp is over for this summer. Thirty-six campers enjoyed the leadership of Ryan Hargrave, Mike Brothers, Dick Dommel and others. There was a lot of enthusiasm amongst the campers and staff so Mike is going to be looking into getting this group together again for more sailing at CSC during the year. This enthusiastic team might invite some competition from other youth teams!! Dick Dommel organized the US Sailing Advanced Race Management Seminar that was held at our Club last weekend. This seminar was well attended and supports our continued commitment to maintain excellence in race management. Thank you to the instructors: JC Moore, Steve Szymanski Sr, Bud Sweet (LMSC) and to US Sailing National Race Officer Tim Rumptz.! Thank you to Amber, Pat and Bill Freeman, Marybeth Mahrer and all of your assistants for hosting another wonderful Grill Your Own. Another big crowd and lots of fun and fellowship. This is certainly one of our most favorite events! And special thanks to Past Commodore and Mammadore Charlie and Juli for washing dishes and hauling trash. Thank you Robert Key for another intriguing look inside the planning and skills required in sailing the Newport to Bermuda Race. Robert always attracts a big crowd with tales of his sailing adventures we re hoping he has more sailing events in mind! Vice Commodore Dan arranged this popular educational event/open house! JULY BOARD OF STEWARDS MEETING: Jan Jernigan and Robert Key proposed CSC hosting the US Junior Women s Doublehanded Championship in June The BOS moved to gather input from membership and to reconvene 2 weeks later to vote on the proposal. A survey was sent out to membership via . We received written feedback from 36 of our 171 members. We also received verbal feedback from many members. Results of written survey: 16 members committed to being available for this Championship; 13 members were not able to commit but would help if available; 5 members not commit/not help but were supportive of idea; 2 members did not support the Championship to be held at our Club. The BOS reconvened in a special meeting and voted unanimously to host the Championship. There is some ongoing concern among Club members about our ability to house and transport daily 80 young women Jan and Robert are investigating this issue with host homes and/or USC dorms. I m sure we will be hearing more about this throughout the year. Please let Jan and Robert know how you can help.! AUGUST BOARD OF STEWARDS MEETING: Loss of money in canteen continues to be a problem. Price increases are being considered. A security camera is being considered. Please remember to pay for your purchases. A bid has been submitted to US Sailing to host the US National Junior Women s Double-handed Championship in June CSCA would like to assist in organizing CPR/AED training for membership. As members become trained, CSCA will be investigating the purchase of an AED for our Clubhouse. Rear Commodore Andrew is still accepting nominations for our yearly awards. Long Range Planning Committee is accepting written comments and project suggestions/cost projections. A report was made on the erosion and need for rip rap on our property by the beach and also area by Dock 1. A cost estimate will be discussed at the next BOS meeting. The rip rap may need to be replaced before building the new bath house to be discussed at the next BOS meeting.! MEMBER NEWS: Please keep the family of Linda Wilkins in your prayers. Linda was such a loving and faithful member, she is so missed by her Club. Please keep Betty Flinsch in your thoughts for a speedy recovery from hip fractures. Also, keep in your prayers and thoughts Debra Hudson and Bruce Seiffert for the loss of their mothers.! REMINDERS: Please remove water toys/boats from beach area after use each day. Also, Please do not allow your guests to make purchases in canteen nor give them the canteen code. Only members are allowed in the canteen. Please handle purchases for your guests. Thanks. 3 CSC Auxiliary News by Kris Kenline, President! Summer seemed to go very quickly this year, pretty much in a blink of an eye. Our big August event was a terrific success thanks to Redick Loring and her wonderful team of Kim Milling, Karen Counts, Jackie Meyer, Rebecca Dotterer, Jan Jernigan and Nan Nussler. We also had a number of volunteers who all helped to clean up and leave the club ready for the Grill Your Own following right on its heels.! Chef Joel provided a very tasty evening with a great menu and his delightful banter. It was great to step aside and hear all the conversations and laughter going on in between his little talks. The only sad part of the evening was that Redick, who had spearheaded the whole evening, was too under the weather to attend. She definitely was missed. I really enjoy her s which are always filled with wonderful ideas for the Club.! The Ship s Store has been having some really big sales under the leadership of Beverly Beauregard and Joan Leamy. Look to see some changes in how the clothing line will be handled in the coming year. I am glad to report that a visit to Betty Flinsch found her doing incredibly well and making new friends in the rehab facility, while acting as a great outgoing social force amongst the other residents. No one is a wallflower when Betty is around. The therapists can proudly point to her as the model for a great patient! And as of this writing, she has returned home. She has been very grateful for all the well wishes she has received.! I also want everyone to keep Monica Szymanski in their thoughts and prayers. Nora spent a lot of her childhood growing up at CSC in the Sunfish racing program and crewed for her dad, Palmer McArthur, for many years. Her children have also participated in the Junior program at CSC. Bradley Anderson has also applied for membership and he is sponsored by Admiral Dick Dommel. He owns and actively sails a San Juan 21 and is interested in doing some Race Committee work as well. Please welcome to provisional membership:! In other membership news, June Ayling passed away on August 10, She and husband Bob were longtime members of CSC and were not only skilled sailors but very competitive San Juan racers as well. Bob and Ms. June were married for 60 years; please keep their family in your thoughts and prayers.! Per our Bylaws, the Long Range Plan is our Roadmap, Budget, or Blueprint, guiding us and helping us schedule future major projects around our Club. Input from the membership is crucial in assisting the planning committee to recognize our needs and prioritize Capitol Fund Projects. This is a special Award given Annually to a member of the Auxiliary for outstanding service with the Auxiliary and Columbia Sailing Club. 6 LMYRA Tiller Talk by Hootie Bushart! Boy can I pick em. I had Race Committee for the Race 4 and final LMYRA summer race on Saturday. The weather report was for 70 to 80 percent chance of rain and thunder storms! My race committee showed up early and we were ready to go by 5:30. We checked the radar over and over and it looked clear on the lake and to the west so out we went.! The winds were light but sailable. We set the pin about 100 yards in front of the Dam and set the windward mark 1.5 miles to the west toward Jim Spence Islands. We had 6 boats make the starting line and had two skippers on RC. As we began the starting sequence the winds went very light. The first three boats couldn t make the starting line. Bob Blundy starting 4th was late but managed to start on port tack at the pin. We looked up the lake and the little wind that was present dissipated. We decided to abandon the race and send the boats back to the docks. It was fun but no cigar. The weather LMYRA Evening Races have sailed into the sunset was fine but the winds did not cooperate.! First I d like to thank the skippers and crews that show up for the race. I know the weather reports were awful but they showed up anyway. Since we had 6 skippers that checked in for race 4, I m giving an Outback gift certificate to each skipper for showing up. The skippers are: Roger Dougal, Mays Dickey, Bob Blundy, John Butler, Bradley Anderson and Barry Davis. I d also like to thank race committee: PRO Hootie Bushardt, Ted Koberg, Patsy Fulmer, Gary Dowdey, Kathy Tabor, Jeff Shull and Chris Utley. We did a lot of training on RC and I couldn t have worked with a better crew.! Important Dates: The Fall Skippers meeting will be Friday Sept 5 at Columbia Sailing Club. The meeting will include trophy s for the summer special race, gift certificates for the summer evening races and registration for the Fall Series. I m really excited about the Fall. Race 1 of the Fall series will be Saturday Sept 13. This race will start at 12:00 noon instead of our regular time of 11:00. The Dam Swim for Drew takes place on the same date and we will need to give the boats participating in this event time to get to the race course. Also mark on your schedule, the 15th Annual Outback Cup Regatta will take place on Sept 20 and 21.! PAGE 6

7 Sailing News by Andrew Clarkson! With the Summer Dinghy Series behind us, attention now shifts to the swiftly approaching Fall Sailing events.! Our main upcoming attractions include The Outback Regatta will be September 19-21st, SC State Laser Championships are October 3-5th, and the Midlands Regatta is scheduled for November 7-9th. Please put these events on your calendar and make sure to join all the fun.! Equally important, please sign up to volunteer & help out. It s not only great fun and a perfect way get to know each other better, but hugely helpful in making these CSC signature events a success.! Don t forget to check our website ( for the latest race scores and standings, club events, and registration information.! Lastly, CSC annual awards nomination will open very soon. Start looking around for those deserving folks who you d like to be the next recipients of: Outstanding Service Award, Sportsmanship Award, Outstanding Sailor, Outstanding Junior Sailor, Junior Sportsman ship, Wallace Wilkins memorial Outstanding Crew Trophy & most certainly the Jessie H. Start looking around for those deserving folks who you d like to be the next recipients of: the Outstanding Service Award, recognizing a person who has spent countless hours in service of the Club: the Sportsmanship Award, recognizing someone who both practices good sportsmanship in competition and promotes the sport of sailing: the Outstanding Sailor Award, recognizing a person who has successfully competed in numerous regattas during the year: the Outstanding Junior Sailor Award, same requirements as Outstanding Sailor except that his person must be under the age of eighteen (18): the Junior Sportsmanship Award, with the same requirements as Sportsmanship above, again except that this person must also be under the age of eighteen (18): the Wallace Wilkins memorial Outstanding Crew Trophy, This award recognizing a crew who has sailed in numerous regattas during the year and has consistently exhibited outstanding crew work, & most certainly the Jessie H.
