At the Helm Commodore Jan Jernigan Ready or not, December is here! Tis the season to come celebrate and enjoy yourself with family and friends at CSC. Allie Hassinger has promised much fun at the tree-trimming. The Carol Sing is always joyful as we sing Christmas carols, drink delicious hot-buttered rum and make merry. Also please plan to attend our lovely Christmas Party at Forest Lake Club December 21 st. We ve had a banner year at our club! Some of the milestones of 2018 include celebrating our 10 th anniversary in our beautiful clubhouse, completely updating our website, and very importantly, engaging a director of sailing for the club. With that said, sailing activity has been flourishing with Columbia Sailing Club is excited to announce that we will be hosting a US Sailing Race Management Seminar Course on January 19, Through this course, we hope to increase the level of knowledge and confidence that each Race Committee member needs to volunteer and help properly conduct a race. This one-day course will be led by our official US Sailing Area Race Officer, JD Rosser. The course fee is $50 and includes the seminar, course materials, online testing and processing, breakfast, lunch and snacks. There are only 25 spots available for this course and advanced registration is REQUIRED. For all CSC members, if you sign up for the course and pass the online test, CSC will reimburse you the course fee of $50. Page 1
classes for all, including successful summer camps and classes for women only. Our Junior Sailing Team has made us proud. And now we even have the Renegade Sailors, a group of dinghy sailors who formed their own Sunday afternoon races at CSC. Our Midlands Regatta brought well over 100 sailors to sail at our club in November. Congratulations to our Sailing Director, David Van Cleef, and our Rear Commodore, Bruce Seiffert, on their success. Sailing has become contagious at CSC! The renewed interest in sailing has helped bring us numerous new members. Congratulations to our Vice Commodore, David Mosley, for having another fantastic year for membership. In the past two years, we have gotten over 27 new members who have brought even more positive energy to CSC. To all of our newest members and their families, welcome!!! We are so glad that you are a part of something special and hope that you enjoy the club for years to come. Diane Augsburger and the CSC Auxiliary have worked hard to support our club. We could not have had all the success we ve had without them. They are the backbone of our club. Earlier this year, CSCA and CSC agreed to collaborate and build a playground for our children. Happily, the playground has received the Gabrielle seal of approval which means that my 3-year old granddaughter approves and loves it! I want to express my gratitude to the other Officers, Board of Stewards, Committee Chairs and Membership for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your Commodore. Our members exemplify the true meaning of teamwork. Thanks to all of you for a wonderful year at CSC! In Memorium We have lost several very special members in They include Tom McCutchen, Nancy Babb, Bob Hollaway, Carol Bond, Bruce Loring, Will Nelson, Wiggie Jones, Lyell Whyte and Shep Wagoner. They all left a legacy at CSC that will endure. Mike Lambert I recently announced that our resident manager, Mike Lambert, has resigned effective January 2 nd. Mike has been with us for about nine years. He has been an excellent resident manager and has formed many deep friendships at our club. He is ready for a new chapter in his life. He plans to travel the United States and share his story in order to encourage others. His goal is to run a race in every state! Please join me in wishing Mike all the best for the future and bid him a happy farewell. Jan Page 2
The Vice Report Vice Commodore David Mosely With the busy sailing season winding down and the holiday season upon us, I like looking back at things that have happened over the past year. CSC has sixteen new members and their families joining us this year. Another new member will be presented at the December meeting. It seems we are preparing our club for the future, a future that has sailing at its foundation. In addition to this year s membership growth, CSC started the junior sailing team, expanded youth sailing camps, and enjoyed three seasons of dinghy racing. These are all examples of what happens when we work hard as a club to provide the very best facilities, coaching and atmosphere that involve existing members and attract new members. Sailing is back at CSC! New Member Application: Stephanie Copple is married to Christopher Copple and lives in Lexington. They have two sons, Oliver and Ellis. Stephanie is a graphic designer and partner at Black and Hue, LLC. She is sponsored by Robert Key. Stephanie took the dinghy course several years ago and has had several more lessons since. She and Chris are super enthused about really learning to sail their new Beneteau First 20 and they will be seeking a back-cove slip for their new boat. Stephanie says, "It is our dream to enjoy sailing as a family. Stephanie and Chris look forward to being part of a group that shares their passion, learning at CSC while enjoying the camaraderie of the club. They are interested in various CSC volunteer opportunities including event planning and help with design work. Stephanie and Chris also enjoy gardening, cooking, and cars and are members of the Porsche Club of America and the Midlands Mini Motoring Club. Please continue to welcome and include new members in CSC activities as they occur! Dust off that boat, prepare it for the next race, the next season, the next year, and I will see you on the water! See you on the water! Page 3
The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert They say, Time flies when you are having fun, and that is how my experience as Rear Commodore has been this year. I want to thank everyone for your support because without you none of this would have been possible. It seemed as if every time I turned around, someone was helping me in the kitchen, running races, setting up events and on and on >>> THANK YOU! 2018 began with the Bonfire on the Beach and very chilly conditions. We experienced wind of 15+ and temperatures in the low 30 s. These conditions kept us from having the New Year Frostbite Regatta for safety reasons, but they did not stop the POLAR BEAR plunge and the libations that followed. We had a great turnout for the New Year s Day meal and continued enjoying the libations that were on hand. From a sailing perspective, we introduced the Spring Dinghy Series and the Fall Dinghy Series. These series were very successful and brought a lot of energy to the club. They are already scheduled for next year. The Summer Dinghy Series took on a new look with 420 s being sailed by our club members and sailing coaches with crew from our Junior Sailing Camps. We provided four club Sunfish to be used by members who did not have one. Once again, this was a huge success. These Sunfish were also on the beach to be used on the weekends for folks to just jump on and go out for a quick sail. We had our annual J24 Easter Regatta followed by the Spring Lightning Regatta. Both regattas were successful, and we plan to continue them next year as the competitors from both classes love the hospitality we offer and the tremendous support from CSC Members. The Junior Sailing Camp was taken to another level this year by David Van Cleef and his coaching staff. Having been around and involved with junior sports programs, I have no doubt that our Sailing Director is going to be an overwhelming success. The energy produced so far is only going to get better. The support he has received from the CSC Membership has been both rewarding and very gratifying by all who have been involved. There are many folks that deserve a shout out but none more deserving than Margaret Clarkson for her unwavering support and commitment to the programs being developed. The Fall Dinghy Series was just completed. John Young captured the series in spirited competition with Jim Edwards, the Summer Series winner. Let the trash talking begin!!! By now, you have all heard of The Renegades (see pictures of special tee shirts) and the energy they created between the end of the Summer Series and the beginning of the Fall Series. Page 4
We had chalk talks led by Crawford Milling, the PRO for this series, and the sailing was very spirited, if you know what I mean. Thanks to Michele Davis, Bill Freeman, Matt O Connor and Ryan Lavisky for their support on the water for this series. I am the upcoming Vice Commodore. With 14 new members (and counting) for the year, David Mosely has set the bar very high for attracting and bringing in new members. I will try my level best to continue that trend and manage the Vice Commodore responsibilities to the best of my abilities. Jim Edwards will be the incoming Rear Commodore and I ask you all to be as supportive of him as you have been with me. See you on the water and hopefully at the Christmas Party!!! Bruce 2019 CSC Yearbook If you have not responded to the request for 2019 yearbook information, please supply any updates as soon as possible. There has been a question about phone numbers. The question asks for home/work /cell. If not entering 3 numbers, please note the type of number. If we do not hear from you, we will assume your current information is correct. 6 The Real Cost of Columbia Sailing Club s Reinvigorated Sailing Program Jim Edwards, Member BOS and Rear Commodore Elect If you ve been at the club in the last six months you must have noticed increased sailing activity. This is the result of the Board of Stewards (BOS) decision, with the approval of the membership, to hire a Sailing Director, as an independent contractor, to invigorate our youth and adult sailing programs, expand the visibility of the club, and increase membership. The effort has been an overwhelming success. However, some concerned members have posed the question, at what cost? Fair enough. During many hours of discussion, the BOS agonized over what would be required: the cost of the director and his instructors, the cost of repairing and upgrading club Optis, Sunfish, and 420s, the possible purchase of new boats, office space and equipment, etc. The BOS understood that we would incur a net loss for the first year or two, similar to any new startup project, but we believed the possible rewards were worth the risk. Timing was also a factor. From experience, we knew that the competition for certified instructors for summer camps was fierce. To be successful, the organization of summer programs must be completed by January to allow time for advertising and staff acquisition. Because of the complexity of our task, the BOS was unable to meet its self-imposed January deadline in Consequently, our late start negatively impacted our potential first year success. Plans for 2019 programs are already in place, so this should not be a problem moving forward. At the Annual Meeting our treasurer, Curt Rone, provided an accounting of income and expenses related to the Sailing Director showing a deficit of $44,392 through September 30. This is larger than the annual $23,553 budget deficit we originally anticipated. After the meeting, several members suggested that this deficit is too large and unsustainable. While we accept the fact that numbers don t lie, these numbers don t tell the whole story. As a direct result of programs attributable to the Sailing Director, we have gained nine new club members, resulting in $9,000 in initiation fees and $8,424 in annual dues. In addition, one of these new members has a twenty-four-foot boat in the back cove, resulting in an additional $1,000 back cove entry fee and $634 in annual slip rental fees. The total monetary benefit of these new members to the club is $19,058. If this is subtracted from the deficit listed above ($44,392) the remainder is $25,334. The difference between this number and the original projected Sailing Director budget deficit ($23,553) is only $1,781! While these funds do not directly offset program deficits for accounting purposes, they clearly are an increase in the club s economic well-being. The hidden benefits of our reinvigorated sailing programs accrue to the general financial health of the club. The bottom line is, the current deficit created by our expanded programs is not as significant as it first appears when viewed holistically within the club s finances. Your Board of Stewards takes its fiduciary responsibility very seriously. It is important to be diligent and continually monitor the expenses and deficits of all of CSC s programs. Rest assured, we will continue to closely monitor the expenses of our Sailing Director and related programs and evaluate their impacts on CSC. Page 6
