1 the Telltale 55th Midlands Regatta: Great Oysters. Not Talking About the Wind What a busy Midlands Regatta. We had a great Oyster Roast (at the Boathouse for the first time), celebrated Wi$ard Davis 99th Birthday, elected new leaders, sailed a little and towed some boats around.! PAGE 1

2 At The Helm Commodore Beth Mathias Ahoy mates... we are having a very busy Fall and Holiday season for our Club, kicked off by our fantastic Midlands Regatta and Oyster Roast. Thanks to Sarah Weiss for organizing and running that event. Delicious oysters, fun regatta, and good camaraderie amongst members and guests were enjoyed by all. Prior to the Midlands was workday. Thank you to some 50+ members who volunteered their time to help make our Club look so spectacular. Our Club depends on you! We have had our November Board of Stewards Meeting and our Annual Meeting with highlights listed below. I thank all Officers, Stewards, Committee Chairs, and the many members who work all year long to maintain our vibrant Club. Especially thank you to Alecia Milling and Mike Lambert for the many hours you put in above and beyond the call of duty! Sadly, I am sure you share my disappointment having to bid farewell to Vice Commodore Dan Clayton, but please join me in wishing Dan the very best as he finishes his year as Vice Commodore. Even though Dan will focus his efforts on his business next year, I know we will continue to have his wise input and presence for many years to come. Our Club sailing season is over for now but we have many events still to come: --CSCA Annual Meeting, November 16 --Deck the Halls and Christmas Tree Trimming Happy Hour, Friday November 28 --Carolina/Clemson Eats/Drinks/(and more tree decorating if needed ), Saturday November 29 --Annual Christmas Party at Forest Lake Country Club, Friday December 19 --Carol Sing and Youth Awards, Sunday December 21 --New Year s Eve Party by CSCA Notes from BOS Meeting: --Our membership and financial standings are good. As our Club House begins to age, we will have more expenses for repairs that we have not had to face to date. Other expenses to maintain our Club have also increased, such as electricity. We will need to consider a small dues increase this coming year. --Craig Milling and his team have been working on hinges for back docks which are needed for the lake drawdown. --Johnny Johnson arranged for the recent paving of our driveway. --Board approved combining Gamecock Sailing Fees and Youth Capital Budget to purchase another 420 boat to be used by our Juniors, Sailing Camp, and the Gamecock Sailors. Notes from Annual Meeting: --Gamecock Sailing Commodore Katherine Stewart outlined Gamecock sailing activities of the year. --RipRap/Erosion Control Project and monies were approved by membership. Work is to be started immediately. --Slate of Officers was presented. Vice Commodore Dan Clayton withdrew his nomination for Commodore due to unexpected work demands. Nominations were taken from the floor. JC Moore was nominated for Commodore. Membership then elected the entire slate as presented: Commodore: JC Moore; Vice Commodore: Andrew Clarkson; Rear Commodore: Dan Robinson. Board of Stewards: Rich Boyle, Michial Smith, Alan Zwart, Meyer Moore. Membership Committee: Jim Edwards, Stanley Hassinger. Congratulations to all. 3 CSC Auxiliary News by Kris Kenline, President This autumn has been a busy one. Many of our members were happy to help Sarah Weiss out with the Midlands which certainly seemed a great success despite the lack of wind on Saturday. Kim Milling led her band of volunteers in once again putting on a fantastic Burger Lunch for the Auxiliary in addition to all the time she spent in the kitchen for the Club's Annual Meeting, the Oyster Roast and Saturday night barbecue. We were worried that she would never get out of the kitchen, but she has told me she really enjoys it all and we are all very lucky to have her. Last Sunday, my vice president Diana Wrisley planned and supervised a wonderful Annual Party for the Auxiliary. Karen Counts designed and transformed the clubhouse into a beautiful autumn room, perfect to display all our delicious goodies brought my members. But first, we held our business meeting and now our 2015 officers are officially elected. They are: Diana Wrisley, president; Jayne Boyle, vice president; Beverly Beauregard, secretary; Pat Freeman, treasurer with Diane Augsburger and Karen Counts as our Long Range Planning Members-At-Large. My hopes are for a great year for them. The year is coming quickly to a close. Before we know it our Auxiliary Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 9th at 6:30 will be here. A small business meeting will be held to approve next year s budget, but this is really a fun event. Everyone brings an hors d'oeuvre to share and gifts for SisterCare (a list of needed things is on their website and is somewhat changed from past years). We all bring gifts for under $20 which we put under the tree. After drawing numbers in order, each member selects either a new unwrapped gift or "steals" that of another member...all in good fun. We certainly would love to see everyone, especially those who haven't been able to attend meetings over the past year no matter what the reason. After that comes the club's Carol Sing and Christmas Party culminating in a great Grill Your Own Party to mark New Year's Eve planned by members Julie Calhoun and Karen Counts. It has been a year filled with great celebrations and solemn moments shared with members as well. I am very thankful for all of it. 5 Membership News By Dan Clayton Applied for membership: Mr. Charles Brooks is sponsored by J.C.Moore. Charles is married to Karen and has 2 young children. Mr. Brooks crewed for a couple of our all-time favorites, Mr. Staton Peele and Janus DeHamer during the 80 s. He does not currently own a boat, however he is in the market for cat boat, possibly a Compac 17. He was born and raised in Columbia, his children are 12 and 14 now and he and Karen want to introduce them to the wonderful sport of sailing. Also applied for membership is Ms. Elaine Parshall. She has been away from us for a while, however, grew up at the club and is a very gifted sailor. She was a high school sailing coach, sailed Sunfish, Y-Flyers and keelboats and has taught adults and children sailing for many years. To quote her application, I returned to SC after 30 years so that I could be close to my friends from CSC and my family. Elaine is employed by the SC Governors School for Science and Math in Hartsville, SC. Our Club is a wonderful haven for all of our members. 6 LMYRA Tiller Talk by Hootie Bushart LMYRA Fall Race 5: There is not much you can say about scheduled race 5 on Nov 1. The day started with heavy rains. Two hours before the race the lake was experiencing rain, snow and sleet. We kept hoping that conditions by race time would improve. However, it got worse. The winds were toping 30mph, the temperature was about degs and it continued to rain. It just wasn t meant to be. The race was mercifully canceled. I would like to thank the folks on race committee : PRO: Robert Key, Jim Edwards, Ted Koberg, Sally Key, Scooter Edwards, Anne Edwards, Bob Meyer, Kyle Rousche. Thank you for giving it a valiant try. Midlands Regatta: The regatta had 60 boats. I am proud to announce that the PHRF fleets spinnaker and non-spinnaker had 21 boats. Great turnout. Wish we could have had a little more wind but the Oyster Roast was great fun and the everyone had a great time at the BBQ dinner on Saturday evening. Thank you Sarah Weiss and Andrew Clarkson for planning a top notch regatta. However, next year could you plan a little more wind. Next LMYRA Fall Race: Our next race is an island race on Saturday Dec 6. 7 Sailing News by Andrew Clarkson Earlier this month, we hosted our 55th Midland s Regatta. Sarah Weiss worked feverishly. There were oysters-a-plenty on Friday night, absolutely no wind for Saturdays racing, and great BBQ and Chicken for sup Saturday night. On Sunday morning, the PROs pulled in a couple of races for each fleet. This year s overall winner and recipient of the Willard Davis Award is David Parshall from the Sunfish fleet. There was a birthday salute to our own Willard Davis, 99 years young and the namesake for this events champion.
