the Telltale Championship of Champions Triumphs at CSC! By Jan Jernigan, Regatta Chair Columbia Sailing Club was honored to host a prestigious regatta from October th, the Championship of Champions, with only North American or world-class champs at the helm of each boat. The crew members weren t too shabby either and included our own David Parshall, Amber Parshall and Sally Key. Everyone on the race course was outstanding! The 20 boat challenge was held in the Lightning Class. Boats were on loan by sailors from Florida to New York and almost every state in between. We were fortunate enough to borrow topnotch boats from Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee as well. The vessels were all equally tuned by admirable experts, Tommy Allen, Jr. from Buffalo, NY and Brian Hayes, from Milford, Ct. These two, along with Will Tyner, Dan Clayton and other local folks, donated a week of their time and incredible knowledge to make this a first class regatta all the way. We soon learned that there is nothing that Tommy Allen, Jr. and Brian Hayes can t fix on the water! Brian Keane, the overall winner from Massachusetts, called me last week to say what a fantastic regatta it was. Paul Abdullah, US Sailing C of C chair, left a message saying, It was awesome thank you! Betsy Alison (sailing at left), our honored guest and 5 time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year winner, was singing CSC s praises for hosting one of the best regattas ever! And Liz Walker from US Sailing is already in talks with us to host another major regatta. Everyone was pleased and impressed with our Southern Hospitality! Official hostesses, Candace Leaphart, Alecia Milling and Stefanie Seal welcomed everyone into our CSC home. George Selkinghaus, Jeannie Piehl and Fred Piehl graciously took spectators out the entire weekend to watch the races. Bruce Seiffert headed up the pre-selling of sails for us. In the end, we were able to pre-sell 20 new sets of sails to other Lightning boat-owners. It is noteworthy that all boats were so close in capability and all skippers so proficient, we had some close racing with no boat at a significant advantage. This is what a fair round-robin is all about. Special thanks go to Johnny Dotterer, who negotiated to get us 2 RIBS (rubber inflatable boats) from the Carolina Yacht Club in order to handle the boat transfers between races. David Brett, Mike McGill, Wayne Hale, and Jeff Kremlick got the 20-boat exchange down to a few short minutes! All of this was expertly coordinated by our fearless leader and Commodore, Richard Leaphart. Well done!!! (Continued on page 6)! PAGE 1

At The Helm Commodore Richard Leaphart What a year for sailing at CSC. The sailing agenda that CSC pulled off this year was second to none. YFlyer Mid Winters, J24 Easter Regatta, SJ 21 North Americans, Laser SE Regional s, LMYRA Outback Cup, US Sailing Championship of Champions, Midlands Regatta and Sunfish SE regional, and The Thursday Dinghy Series. None of these events would have been possible without all the volunteer members that stepped up and made it happen. The Championship of Champions alone required over 80 volunteer members and under Jan s leadership was one of the best events ever hosted at CSC. Then Rear Commodore Dan Clayton had to immediately rally the troops and host CSC s signature event, the Midlands Regatta, two weeks later. If this doesn t solidify our charter to further interest and activities in sailing I don t know what does. We had a great turnout for the Annual meeting on November 7 th. The slate of officers was approved as nominated. I would like to welcome Andrew Clarkson as your new Rear Commodore, Ralph Pearson, Crawford Milling and Sara Weiss to the Board of Stewards and Steve Szymanski Jr., Charles Bumgardner to the Membership Committee. Until next time, Richard Hosting by Charlie Calhoun A special thanks goes out to the following members that were hosts to our competitors during the Championship regatta: Chris and Dixie Robnett, Robert and Jane Key, Jim and Sara Edwards, Cary and Jeri Palmer, Jim and Christa Hunter, Bruce and Lorraine Seiffert, Hank and Susan Powell, Joe and Sara Reyes, Stone and Susan Crider, Robby and Suzanne Wilkins, Rose Wilkins, Wayne and Sarah Weiss, John and Dupree Young, Dennis and Corinne Anderson, Dave and Bonnie Parshall, Crawford and Kim Milling, Roger and Jodi Dougal, Ben and Peggy Rast, Stan and Ellen Adkins, and myself and Juli. Also a non-member, Laurie Bunn, saved the day by taking a last minute crew. Way to show that southern hospitality. Water in Launching Area now Available by Charlie Calhoun Water is now available at five locations surrounding the front circle. During work day Will Haltiwanger fitted preexisting plumbing with fittings and faucets. Four behind the Js and one on the other side of the circle. Helping dig through the rocks were Gary Dowdey, Mike Brothers, Roger Dougal, Whale Hale, and myself. We put the system to the test cleaning Lightnings during the recent regatta. Apologies from your Editor I sincerely apologize for the tardiness of this issue (issues) of the Telltale. The Sailing Club had a lot going on in a short time frame, and several other influences all got lined up and delayed the production and publication of our newsletter, the main one involving a sudden increase in my time commitments. My schedule is finally back to reasonable, and I promise we won t have any more delays next year. Thank all of you for your patience. Mark Alexander! PAGE 2

I am sure we will have a great and wonderful 2014 year with all of CSCA s help and support. 4 TillerTalk by Hootie Bushardt Races 5 Saturday Nov 2, 2013 Happy days are here again. We were fortunate to have great winds for Race 5. The skies were clear, the temperatures were mild 70s and the winds were 10 to 12 - perfect. Race Committee set up an excellent course for the wind direction and speed. Thirty boats sailed on Saturday along with 1 skipper on RC for a total of 31. LMYRA Fall Race 5 started exactly on time at 11:00. The race committee was comprised of PRO Crawford Fish Milling, Todd Augsburger, Bob Meyer, John Young, Lexie Dedwell, Ted Koberg, and Mark Alexander. Lexie was a rose among thorns. The winds were coming out of the West at 10 to 12. RC set up West of Wise Key. The race course was Counts Wessinger Island, Lunch Doolittle Island, Orange tetrahedron South of Susie Ebert Island and back to finish. All the roundings were to port. What a great course. The winds were perfect to sail between Counts and the mainland. We don t get to do this very often but it is always a treat to sail in a different part of the lake. Correction to Results: The scorer did a perfect job scoring the race. However, yours truly made an error. The first one of my life. That s my story and I m sticking to it. I wrongly placed the Wavelength Poco Loco in Division A as a spinnaker boat. The boat registered non-spinnaker on his registration form and should have been place in division C. He started with the non-spinnaker boats and should have been scored. I have attached a corrected copy of the results. If anyone has any questions please give me a call. The results have not been corrected on the website yet. It is my mistake and I have been keel hauled, deservedly so, by our scorer. USC Sailors: I have many USC sailors sailing as crew on LMYRA boats. Some have become permanent crew on boats. However, I need your help. Could you drop me an to let me know who is sailing on your boat? Races 6 Saturday Nov 16, 2013 While the winds were not perfect they were just good enough to get in a good race. The skies were cloudy, but we didn t get any rain. The temperatures were cool but not uncomfortable. Twenty Five boats sailed on Saturday along with 3 skipper on RC for a total of 28. LMYRA Fall Race 6 started exactly on time at 11:00. The race committee was comprised of PRO Admiral Dick Dommel, Dan Robinson, Bradley Anderson, Julie Calhoun, Pierce Avery and Ted Koberg. The winds were coming out of the North-north east 6. RC set up West of Wise Key. The race course was to an orange tetrahedron toward Susie Ebert, to Lunch Doolittle Island, and back to finish. All the roundings were to port. E division was started first followed by non-spinnaker divisions C & D and then spinnaker divisions A & B. While the winds were not that strong it was a fun day of racing. Congratulation to our first place finishers: Division A Crawford Fish Milling, Division B Linton Lewis, Division C Dave Mahrer, Division D Bob Hollaway and Division E Mac Smith. Also congratulation to Fran Trapp for an excellent race in Division B.! PAGE 4

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION CSC Membership News by Beth Mathias, Vice Commodore Robert Meyer has applied for Provisional Membership. Bob and his wife, Jackie, have raced with the Safety Harbor Boat Club (North Tampa Bay), the St. Petersburg Sailing Association, and the Davis Island Yacht Club (Tampa). They have been active in both club and race management: Bob has done boat restoration and served on House and Grounds Committee; and Jackie has been the Regatta Chair of the Good Old Boat National Regatta (sponsored by Good Old Boat Magazine). They have sailed a Cal 25 and a San Juan 28. They are looking forward to purchasing a boat for Lake Murray and to spending time with new friends who share their passion for sailing/racing. Bob is sponsored by Mark Alexander. MEMBER NEWS We are mourning the recent passing of Past Commodore Palmer McArthur. Palmer was an integral part of sailing in the midlands for decades. He was an avid sailor and won the respect of his competitors. He received many awards for his sailing, most notably the Sportsmanship Award by the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association, and he was one of the first inductees to the Hall of Fame sponsored by the Lake Murray Yacht Racing Association. Palmer s legacy to our Club is certainly his many acts of kindness and teaching to fellow sailors. He was a true gentleman and his spirit will be with our Club forever. There will never be another Palmer McArthur, but we sure can try to live up to his standards! Our heartfelt condolences to Marion and Palmer s families. Thanks so much for sharing Palmer with us. Please keep our members who are facing health issues and other struggles in your thoughts and prayers. SAYRA ANNUAL MEETIMG Coming to CHARLESTON in January! 6 C of C Triumphs (Continued from page 1) The Race Committee worked together like skilled professionals. The wind gods cooperated (for the most part) and Hal Smith, PRO, with Dick Dommel, Deputy PRO, and their exceptional RC team were able to get in an amazing 16 races in 3 days on Lake Murray! As a point of comparison, last year s C of C only got 8 races in over the 3 days. Everyone did such a fine job, including our scorers, Brion and Kris Kenline. Charlie Calhoun headed up the housing committee, a monumental task. Charlie did a great job and sailors were very happy with their accommodations. Joe Reyes was our official US Sailing Photographer. He did a remarkable job, too! Go to US Sailing Website under ChampionshipsRobert Key & Mark Alexander, got in some fabulous shots, too. Alex Bolan handled registration and our Twitter feed. He kept US Sailing and all interested parties informed about each race and changing weather conditions. We had him tweeting 3-4 times an hour! I posted on Instagram and Facebook and received abundant positive comments and a lot of likes! Sometimes you just have to save the best for last! Perhaps the highest coup for our club was recruiting Rebecca Dotterer and Kim Milling to be the food chairladies! What a phenomenal job they did! No one deserves more thanks than Rebecca and Kim! They worked tirelessly to provide the finest, most delicious Southern food known to man. Each event, from the Welcome-Aboard Party Thursday night catered by Blue Marlin, the Friday night dinner with all Certified SC Products catered by DuPre Percival, and the Saturday night banquet catered by award-winning Chef Joel Reynolds from the Culinary Institute at USC, was exceptional! The lunches were equally amazing, with Kim Milling s own scrumptious recipes to keep those sailors fortified! Rebecca and Kim did an impressive job decorating and coordinating everything. Thanks to Veta Hollaway for recruiting Bojangles as sponsors. They fixed our delicious Southern breakfasts each morning. Of course, CSCA came through with the best burgers in town for our final meal, which was great! I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you and our Commodore, Richard Leaphart, who traveled to Wisconsin last year with me to see how to put on a regatta of this caliber. He has been an enormous help in making this such a special event for our club. There are 55 other CSC volunteers out there who helped in so many ways. Even non-members got into volunteering, including Bill Sloger (Marya Barker s dad), who helped coordinate the boat transfers to and from Charleston, and Drew Daugherty, former US Sailing C of C Chair, who helped provide vital information about how to run this regatta. The C of C was the most collaborative successful event I can remember since being a part of CSC and it is thanks to all of you who made the effort to help with such a fine event. THANK YOU ALL!!!! PAGE 6

Sailing News Dan Clayton, Sailing Chairman The Championship of Champions was a wonderful event for our club. Jan Jernigan did an outstanding job and it was inspiring to see our members come together to make this regatta truly special. I think the Race Committee got in 16 races and the food and on-shore activities were fantastic. Thanks to all those who made this possible, it will be remembered for many years. Our 54 th annual Midlands regatta was November 9-10 th and was also well attended. By my count 82 boats attended. Mark Deloach won the Southeast Regional Sunfish Championship and since this was the biggest fleet, Mark also won the Willard Davis Trophy as well. E-Scows made a return for this event which was also great to see. Unfortunately the wind was not very co-operative, but the Oyster Roast and on shore-activities made up for it. Thanks to all who attended and many, many thanks to all of the folks who helped with this event. A very special thanks to all that helped me in my year as Sailing Chairman. It was sometimes hard to know which event was the one I needed to be working on but the support that everyone gave me made it very rewarding. I had lots of fun and hope ya ll did too. Thanks so much! Frank Pierce and the crew of Shoo Fly get their trophy at the Midlands Regatta. Frank has not missed a Midlands (nor an Qutback, Michelob Cup, or Governor s Cup in more than 25 years. Though Wi"ard Davis was not able to attend the Midlands this year, he celebrated a special birthday that weekend.! PAGE 7
