1 At the Helm Commodore David Mosely As I write this article, we are busy working on so much for CSC in What a great start to have 25 people sign up for the US Sailing Race Seminar which was held at the club! The flag officers, sailing director, and SAYRA folks are gearing up for a three day weekend at the SAYRA annual conference in Hilton Head. CSC s sailing director, David Van Cleef, will be giving a presentation and we re super excited! Planning for the dinghy spring series, LMYRA spring series, junior program spring series and all the summer camps is wrapping up and we have already had incredible interest in all. Our lake is down, but we are so fortunate to still have water for our boats in the back cove as well as a huge beach area! Mike Mayfield has done a wonderful job as back cove chairman. His communication about water levels, boats in need of their owners, and his interest in filling up our back cove is certainly timely and very appreciated. We anticipate water levels going back up around the first of March but maybe sooner, depending on rainfall and successful weed eradication. Our search for a new Resident Manager is also ongoing. Although we have not advertised this position, we have had some interest. I ask Just a reminder Invoices for the CSC Quarter dues and fees were mailed early in January! The due date for payment is on or before February 8, If your payment is not received by that date, a 5% late fee will be added to your bill. Your payment must be in the hands of the Treasurer or the Bookkeeper by that date...the postmark date does not count! Last minute payments can be left in the cigar box in the canteen! There is no need to include a copy of your invoice with your payment if you are paying the total amount due. Do include your invoice number in the memo section of your check. 2 each of you to think about someone you know who may fit the bill to be our next resident manager. I have attached a position description which you are welcome to share with those who may be interested. As a hiring manager in my professional role outside of CSC, I always like to hire people I know or who are known by my trusted staff. I like to know what I'm getting. This is why I ask you to help us in the search instead of Duties of the Resident Manager Columbia Sailing Club Columbia, South Carolina hiring an outsider who we don't know. I would like to thank those who came to our board of stewards meeting on January 9th, and thank you for the robust dialogue about our budget, docks and future. For those The resident manager (RM) shall live as a full-time resident at 292 Shuler Road, Columbia South Carolina. In general, the RM will be responsible for overseeing the security and maintenance of the Club property under the direction of the Commodore and Flag officers. The listing of duties that follows should not limit the RM from other duties asked of him/her that may be needed at the Club from time to time. The spirit of the relationship between the RM and Club members is that of an employee/employer but is also based on mutual respect and trust. This document is part of the employment contract. 1. Maintain the security of the Club grounds and facilities, as well as the property of its members on site. 2. Be familiar with Club rules and report any violations to a flag officer. 3. Report any damage to member s personal property. 4. Maintain a list of all vendors necessary for the maintenance of the Club facilities and arrange for vendors to visit property for deliveries, repairs, and maintenance. 5. Be available for all Club functions, working with organizers to arrange furniture, tables, chairs and any needed items for the event. In addition, be available for post event removal of tables, chairs, and other items in a timely fashion so that clean up can be performed. 6. Prepare the Clubhouse and be available to assist a member who has rented the facility. 7. Schedule cleaning of the clubhouse periodically or after events. 8. Maintain a schedule for trash pick-up and recyclables haul off. 9. Oversee Club landscaping and maintain a schedule for grass cutting, etc., to keep Club and grounds in excellent condition. 10. Manage and operate the canteen. This includes purchasing and maintaining the inventory, weekly reporting of expenses/income to the Bookkeeper and reporting the inventory quarterly to the Treasurer. In addition, prepare hot dogs, chili, and condiments for the canteen each weekend. 11. Attend monthly board meetings and report on canteen operations Page 2

3 who are new members, these monthly meetings are open to all members and I encourage you to come and participate. Attending the business meetings allows members to know the "why's" behind the decisions and learn about the activities that are taking place. I want to give a shout out to Dick Dommel for organizing the race committee for the Easter Regatta and for the Lightning Regatta. Thanks to all those who have agreed to help; we look forward to continuing to make these events at CSC special. There are still plenty of volunteer opportunities available at these events-on and off the water- including the Tommy Whiteside Memorial Regatta on April 6-7, and the GSC Open Regatta on March 2nd. The following weekend in March will be our club workday, so make sure you come get our club looking good for all those upcoming events! See you on the water! 4 The Vice Report Vice Commodore Bruce Seiffert We are officially open for business for 2019 new member applications. As previously noted, you are our best source for new members along with our Sailing Program under the direction of David Van Cleef. He has a great schedule worked out for this year and we are hoping these programs will generate interest in joining CSC as it did last year. We had our first Membership Committee meeting January 8 th. The membership committee consists of Ryan Lavisky, Peter Korn, Brandley Anderson, Emery Clark, Amber Phillips, Nora Fowles, and yours truly. We reviewed CSC s procedures hope to build on the recent success stories of the past two years. Jan Jernigan and David Mosely both did an outstanding job. We stressed that it will be incumbent on the sponsoring member(s) as well as the rest of us, to make sure we have new members become engaged in our culture of sailing at the beginning of their membership and encourage them to take advantage of all CSC has to offer. We had our first educational program on January 19 th which was the US Sailing Race Management Course. This was attended by many club members who learned how regattas are managed and who is responsible for what. We have been very fortunate over the years to have Dick Dommel and his loyal following run our regatta s but we need to have some young blood and new faces learn the tasks associated with running regattas. This was a great first step. Our next educational event will be on February 16 th featuring The Great American Loop on Steal-Away with Jim and Beverly Holland hosting. If you have not yet RSVP d, please do so as it promises to be very entertaining and educational. You will see pictured here the Lightning Bar loaded on a flatbed trailer donated by Craig Milling. It went down I-20 to Florence where it is getting some badly needed TLC and will return prior to our upcoming regatta schedule and take its rightful place on the East End of the front porch for all to gather around and share a libation or two. Happy Sailing and see you on the water!! Bruce Page 4

5 The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Jim Edwards They say that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, but on New Year s Day only striped bass and CSC sailors swim in Lake Murray! With water temperatures in the 50 s and air temperatures unseasonably warm in the mid 60 s, the intrepid crew led by Commodore David Mosley went for a polar plunge that has become a tradition at the club. Because of the lake level draw down the plungers had a bit of a hike to reach the water but were undeterred after the warming effects of Mimosas and other libations. After the Plunge, there was more camaraderie and tall tales around the fire pit, along with some impromptu fireworks and cannon fire provided by Bill Freeman and Braxton Sorg. I know swimming on New Year s Day seems like a crazy thing to do but something keeps these nuts coming back. Maybe I ll give it a try next year. You in? Soon, the dinghy sailors began to rig their boats even though the forecast of a southwesterly 10 knots with gusts to 25 seemed a long shot. Luckily, a light breeze filled in just enough to encourage the fleet to launch. PRO, Crawford Milling, assisted by Michelle Davis, Bill Freeman and Matt O Connor were able to set a course and complete five races for the fleet, consisting of Sunfish sailors; Elaine Parshall, 1 st Place, Walter Everett, 2 nd Place, Robert Key, 3 rd Place, followed by John Young, Margaret Clarkson, NOT A LOT OF BREEZE, BUT ENOUGH! Andrew Clarkson, David Mosley, Holder skipper, Ben Simmons and junior sailors, Logan Mosley sailing a Bic and Catherine Jowers sailing an Opti. All of this activity worked ROBERT KEY CELEBRATING HIS 3RD PLACE FINISH. up quite an appetite for a traditional New Year s Day meal of Ham, black eyed peas, collard greens, rice and gravy, corn bread, cobbler, tea, and of course, mimosas enjoyed by 105 members and guests. The success of an event like this is not possible without fantastic volunteers. My sincere appreciation and thanks go to Sarah Edwards and Pat Freeman for decorating the tables, serving and Page 5

6 managing the kitchen along with Julie Calhoun, assisted by Charlie, Hilarie Brush, Tommie Everett and Erin Mosley. Thanks to Julie, we also had a pot of New England hot buttered rum! The CSC family likes to give to those in need, so the left-over food was donated to Walter s Retirement Home in the Eau Claire area of Columbia. There were many smiles and heart felt thank-yous from the residents. Now that New Year s Day has past, we are busy planning the sailing activities for the year including; the Spring Dinghy Series, the Tommy Whiteside Regatta, the Easter Regatta the Lightning Regatta the Spring, Summer, and Fall Dinghy Series, the Midlands Regatta, and the Wednesday night PHRF series. There is something for everyone. So, when the weather warms and the wind picks up, I hope you will join us on the water. Jim WEST MARINE AFFILIATE PROGRAM Columbia Sailing Club is thrilled to be part of the West Marine Affiliate program in This means that any time you shop there, West Marine will donate 5% of your purchase back to our Junior Program allowing us to better serve our community and continue to spread our enthusiasm for sailing! You can link to West Marine through the banner located on the bottom of every page of the CSC website or you can print out the affiliate card and take it with you to the store. In 2018, our CSC Junior Program received $1,328 from West Marine! 7 CSC AUXILIARY NEWS President Allison Hassinger I can t believe that January has gone by so fast. It won t be long and we will be back on the beach, cooling off in the lake, and watching the wind fill our sails around the club. But before we get to the summer heat, we have some fun winter events coming up at CSC. A big thank you to Kim Milling for cooking our dinner at the CSCA meeting on January 15. It was delicious as always. Please remember that our CSCA meetings are held the first Tuesday after the first Wednesday each month. We would love to see new faces and some that we haven t seen in a while. It is always a fun time! Our next two meetings are February 12 and March 12. Our annual Mardi Gras celebration and Sister Care pajama drive will be held on February 12 at DW Fuscos. Please join us at DW Fuscos at 7 pm for a fun dinner. We will be collecting PJs for Sister Care as well as other items listed on their emergent needs list (deodorant, hairbrushes, combs, etc). Be on the lookout for a CSCA requesting RSVPs. The Great Loop dinner is coming up quickly. It will be held on February 16 at 5:00 pm. I know we are all looking forward to hearing about the Holland s adventures. Please join the CSCA for an Italian dinner of lasagna, salad, bread, dessert, and a glass of wine. Cost of dinner is $20/dinner. We will be requesting RSVPs in the coming weeks. Don t miss your chance to hear about the Holland s Great Loop trip and enjoy a delicious dinner at CSC. Our second annual St. Patty s Day Beer Tasting Party will be held Friday, March 15, at 7:00 pm. Last year s event was a lot of fun including some great beer, some homemade beer, and delicious food. Please put it on your calendar, and don t miss out on a fun evening at CSC. We would love to see some new faces join us! If you are new to CSC and are looking to meet people, or just feel like you would like to reconnect, the CSCA is a great way to do that. Mark your calendars and join us for some of these events and meetings. Allie Page 7
