COLUMBIA SAILING CLUB JANUARY 2015 the Telltale Plunging into The New Year! The 2015 Polar Bear Swim This year seven brave souls took the plunge. Those crazy enough to accept this year s challenge were Alecia Milling, John Young, Bob Hollaway, Beth Mathias, Dupre Young, Dan Robinson and Jane Key. PAGE 1
At The Helm Commodore, J.C. Moore When I sat down to write my first column twenty one years ago, I never thought that I would be doing it again today. A lot has changed during that time, but the most important things have remained the same. Columbia Sailing Club still is a great club, and it still has great members. Something changed about seventeen years ago; there was a dues increase. Since that time, a new clubhouse has been built and furnished, the docks have been replaced, a new signal boat has been bought and modified, the north side bath house has been built, and various other projects have been accomplished. All of these things were done without raising the dues. The successive Boards of Stewards and many, many very engaged club members are to be congratulated for making that happen. Our Treasurer has been telling us for the last few years that we ought to think about a dues increase. That time is upon us. Your Board of Stewards is presently in discussions about how to raise both dues and fees (land parking, back cove slippage, etc.) as fairly as we can. The goals are to make these increases with as little pain as possible and to do so in a way that this issue will not have to be revisited for several years. Planning is underway for this year s slate of regattas, and Easter is not that far away. The weather is trying to warm up, and the signal boat is being readied. See you out there! PAGE 2
CSC Auxiliary News President, Diana Wrisley Happy New Year everyone! December was a busy month for the Auxiliary beginning with the Give and Take Christmas Party. We sat around a beautifully decorated tree enjoying good food, drink, laughs, the holiday cheer of Christmas gifts being opened, stolen, and above all, each other s company. The best part of the evening was the abundance of Christmas gifts brought by the ladies to take to Sistercare. Many thanks to Beverly Whitworth and Joan Leamy for coordinating this activity and to all for their charitable donations. Thanks to Commodore Beth and her husband Bill, for the wonderful Christmas party at Forest Lake Country Club. We re still hearing warm reports, including compliments on the charming holiday souvenirs that were created for the occasion. Last year s recipient, Marybeth Mahrer, and CSCA President Kris Kenline presented the Miss Jessie Award to Elizabeth Selkinghaus for her long years of service to CSC and CSCA. The Selkinghauses joined the club in The December Carol Sing was a big hit. A large crowd turned out to sing and socialize and watch CSC junior sailors receive awards. John Wrisley was assisted in leading the singing by his daughter, Kathy Gaddy, and Margery Ballowe. Jessie Helms, to no one s surprise, won the door-prize for perfect attendance. She has never missed this annual event since it began nearly fifty years ago! The sweets, hot buttered rum and other libations were a hit, and so was the arrival of a jolly ol man in a red velvet suit. The children were delighted. And shoppers at the Ship s Store made some last-minute purchases, thanks to Beverly Beauregard and Nan Nussler, who operated this CSCA enterprise. Finally, special thanks to Kris Kenline, the 2014 CSCA officers, committee chairs, and all who helped make the year fun and productive. I also want to thank all who have volunteered to be officers and committee chairs in Since its founding in 1968 the CSCA has accomplished a phenomenal agenda. Let s keep the momentum going! And, please be sure our 2nd Tuesday monthly meetings are on your to-do list. We ll reminders. Cheers Diana PAGE 3
The Rear View Rear Commodore, Dan Robinson I have always considered those who participate in Polar Bear Swims as brave souls who live wildly and seek the most out of life. After participating in CSC s version of the event on New Year s Day, I now just consider them crazy. Seven fools gathered on the beach for the fun, and everyone had a great time, including Bob Holloway s dog. Drinks on the beach provided the needed fortitude. Ten sailors on Sunfish and Lasers registered for the Frostbite Dinghy Regatta. With the course in front of the clubhouse, we watched as the race committee and sailors waited in vain for wind to fuel their boats. So, what to do with regatta awards when there are no races? We resorted to the luck of the draw. In the Sunfish class, David Parshall won the first place prize, with Michael Kapp taking second, and Nick Mahrer winning third place. In the Laser class, Robert Key was the first place winner. Thanks to the race committee, Mark Alexander (PRO), Bill Freeman, Bruce Seiffert, and Ted Koberg, for their valiant efforts. After everyone warmed up, we had a great meal of collards and Hoppin John, artfully prepared by Jim Altman, topped off with delicious ham, cornbread, and desserts. Thanks to Jim, Pat Freeman, and my wife, June, for their all-day work in the kitchen. Thanks also to Mike Lambert and everyone else who assisted throughout the day. Until next month, Dan PAGE 4
Membership News Vice Commodore, Andrew Clarkson Applied for membership: Elaine Parshall, sponsored by her brother David Parshall, spent a lot of her childhood growing up at CSC racing Sunfish, Y-Flyers and keelboats. She has taught & coached high school sailing for many years. While in the junior program at CSC, she held the record for most number of years receiving Outstanding Youth Sailor Award (4 years). After 30 years away from Columbia, she says she s returning to be close to my family and friends at CSC. Andreas Schumacher has applied for membership to the club. He is sponsored by Richard Durlach. Andreas is married to Regina and they have 2 boys, Nicholas 6 and Lucas, who I think is almost 5. The Shumachers sail a Catalina 250 and hope to be keeping their boat at the club when a slip becomes available. They were kind enough to help us with our Midlands Regatta this past November and did a super job. The family looks forward to many adventures on Lake Murray in the future. Please welcome to provisional membership: Mr. Charles Brooks has been accepted as a provisional member to the club and is sponsored by Mr. J.C. Moore. Mr. Brooks and his wife Karen have 2 children Caroline, 14 and Houston who is 12. Charlie crewed for a couple of our all-time favorites, Mr. Staton Peele and Mr. Janus DeHamer during the 1980 s. He is a retired dentist and he and Karen look forward to introducing their children to the wonderful sport of sailing and spending some quality time at the club and on Lake Murray. Thanks to all who have sponsored new members or who have served as character references for these folks. We have some great new provisional members this year! PAGE 5
Other News Andrew Clarkson ANNUAL AWARDS Last month we presented the 2014 Columbia Sailing Club Awards. Our Club Awards are rich in tradition. Some have been awarded annually for over 50 years; some are awarded only as special circumstances arise. I thank the founding fathers of Columbia Sailing Club for establishing the tradition of honoring our own. However, the process of selecting the recipients of these awards is a challenge so many of our members have done so much for our club. But the selection committee has made fine choices for this year. Please join me in Congratulating this year s award winners: Outstanding Service Award : - Jim Holland Sportsman of the Year: Steve Rose Outstanding Sailor Award: Roger Dougal Wallace Wilkins Outstanding Crew Award - George Murray. Outstanding Junior Sailor Award winner Sally Key Junior Sportsmanship Award Ryan Hargrave Junior Outstanding Crew Award: Peirce Avery PAGE 6
