1 the Telltale At the Helm Commodore Andrew Clarkson March is in full swing here at the club. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who helped out at this past CSC Spring work day. Many hands certainly made the day fly and much was accomplished! Our Board of Stewards met early this month heard a presentation on plans for the new Southside bathhouse. Good discussion was had voicing the pros and cons for building both bathhouse and attached multipurpose room. Additionally concern was voiced for not spending for the larger building and instead constructing a stand-alone bathhouse. This conversation is sure to continue at next month s BOS meeting so please come if you can. These meetings are generally held the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm. But this date will from time to time need to be adjusted so watch your for those time changes. Speaking of s, you may have noticed a slightly different CSC blast message hitting your inbox. We are now sending blast messages through Google Groups and no longer using the Yahoo Groups account. If you need to send out a blast message, contact Will Haltiwanger and ask him to set you up. One quick thought though, we all do receive far too many messages already, so consideration is urged when deciding whether a new message is warranted. Roger Dougal reports that on March 5th, Gamecock Sailing Club competed at Clemson and finished in second place, behind only College of Charleston. They beat all of the other teams, including Vanderbilt, Auburn, NC State, Univ. of Tennessee, Univ. of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and UNC Wilmington. Certainly having David Van Cleef as coach had something to do with that! But coaching aside, we have an incredibly talented, organized, and ambitious group of young sailors in the GSC. And don t forget GSC will host an intercollegiate race series at the club on April 2nd. Plans are well underway and I m assured al volunteer positions have already been filed so this is an easy one to come up and just plain enjoy the event and associated festivities. 2 CSC Auxiliary News President Jayne Boyle As we get ready to Spring ahead and welcome the warm weather that has seemingly already arrived, we at the Auxiliary are quickly filling the calendar with events. We met this month on the 8th of March and it was apparent that we are set to be quite busy in the weeks ahead. At the meeting we also had an opportunity to add creatively to our CSC scrapbooks and I want to thank Betty Evans for her generous contributions to the history keeping of the Columbia Sailing Club. We have begun our preparations to support CSC with the 50th Anniversary of the Easter Regatta. Boats are registered, sailors are gearing up for the momentous occasion and the club is bustling with activity. Pat Freeman and Dan Clayton deserve warm recognition for the new beautiful shrubbery that has been added to both our front and back porches, a welcome addition to our landscaping as we welcome in Spring. The festivities for the Regatta will begin on Thursday evening with various snacks and socializing. Friday and Saturday breakfasts will be extensive and lunches and dinners on both nights will be catered. And finally on Sunday, the Auxiliary will present our famous burger lunches for the sailors and hungry spectators to enjoy. I also want to thank Kim Milling for her constant dedication in the planning and coordination of the meals and hors d ouvres. This is a tremendous undertaking and Kim consistently executes the task with ease. We will also be supporting the first CSC race being hosted by the Gamecock Sailing Team on Saturday, April 2nd. The racers will be meeting downtown in Columbia at USC on Friday night and will be arriving at our sailing club on Saturday around 8am. There are seven teams currently registered from the southeast region and it is our hope to send the sailors out onto the water with a light snack. I look forward to seeing you all during this busy and wonderful spring season here at CSC! PAGE 2

3 The Vice Report Vice Commodore Dan Robinson With the hint of spring in the air and Easter almost upon us, the activity has picked up around the club. LMYRA has started its Spring racing series, and there are J24s from out of state parked at the club, eagerly awaiting the Easter Regatta. So, come out to the club and be a part of it. Membership The Board approved Mac McCallum for Provisional membership at the March BOS meeting. Mac and his wife, Martie Gail, are avid catamaran sailors, so if you see them down at the beach rigging one of their four cats, be sure to welcome them to the club. Also, the Board approved Full membership for Andreas Schumacher and Elaine Parshall as they have successfully completed their Provisional year. Congratulations to them both on reaching this milestone. We are happy to have them as club members. Congratulations to Robert and Jane Key on receiving the H. Willard Davis Service Award at the SAYRA Annual Meeting in Hilton Head in January. Robert and Jane have been active in SAYRA for many years, and Robert currently serves as its Treasurer. Also, the SAYRA Club Challenge Winner s flag was accepted by the CSC officers in attendance at the Annual Meeting. The Club Challenge was won by Elaine Parshall and her crew, David Parshall, Bonnie Parshall, and Allison Van Cleef. They competed in a J22 in Charleston Harbor against other teams from the Charleston area. Education Our next Open House will be the weekend of the Easter Regatta on Sunday, March 27. Please invite your friends and family to the club as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Easter Regatta and our first regatta of the year. Wayne Hale will lead our next educational event, as he discusses PHRF ratings, a subject dear to all PHRF racers hearts. This seminar will be held at the club on Saturday, April 9, beginning at 10:00 am. Come learn how PHRF ratings are determined and why that boat that beats you every week has the rating it does. 4 The Rear View Rear Commodore Jan Jernigan The 50th Annual Easter Regatta is on its way! Join in the fun and excitement as Charles Bumgardner and his team put on a regatta to remember. Sailors will be arriving Thursday, March 24th at the club, so please show them CSC s fabulous Southern Hospitality! Racing begins Friday and there will be a delicious BBQ dinner Friday night. Get ready for an Italian feast on Saturday night. The best burgers in town will be served Sunday by CSCA, so plan to watch the awards and enjoy a great burger lunch Easter Sunday. They recently came in 2nd place behind College of Charleston in the regional district ISSA, Interscholastic Sailing Association race. They actually beat Clemson sorry Tiger fans! GSC is a part of SAISA, South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association, one of 7 regional districts in the ISSA. Our own David Van Cleef has been coaching them and doing a fantastic job! They have been out at our club practicing hard and making us proud. Thanks to David, Allison Van Cleef, Roger Dougal and all CSC club members who have graciously supported this talented group of sailors. CSC will be hosting the first Gamecock Sailing Invitational Saturday, April 2nd. The event will be held in 420 s with several colleges competing in this intercollegiate event. The skippers meeting is at 9:00am and racing begins at 10:00am. Please show your support for these enthusiastic sailors! 5 In Memoriam Donald Smith Our condolences go out to Michial Smith on the passing of his father, Donald Smith, on February 24, Mr. Smith lived in Oklahoma and is also survived by his daughter, Melinda, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. George & Chee Chee Walker by John Wrisley CSC history reveals that George R.P. Walker, Jr. showed up on the starting line of the club s first regatta skippering a Sailfish. It was Labor Day weekend, The club had been founded only a few weeks before, in mid-july. Despite the disappointment of the general drifting conditions of that weekend George s enthusiasm for sailing was not dampened. He was among the first wave of new members to join the club. Dues were $5.00 per quarter. By the time flag officers were decked out in their new $17.00 blue blazers, with distinctive white patches bearing the club burgee, George had accepted the role of treasurer. A $ per member assessment had been levied and dues had risen to $15.00 per quarter. CSC was leasing property from SCE&G and was rapidly developing it. Young George Walker was methodical and set in his ways. Some thought him aloof, although it was a demeanor probably influenced by his schooling in England at Harrow. He was interested in all aspects of yachting, including yacht design. He bought an old E Scow and laboriously renovated it into a beautiful craft with black hull, brilliant white deck and white mast. He called her Milady and won the famous Mug Race on the St. John s River in Florida, starting at Palatka and ending - hours later - near Jacksonville. Walker drifted from the sailing circuit and followed his love of art, books, and horses. He may be the only club member to have spent most of his life raising Hanoverian horses. And he had a flair for the theatrical, too. He co-starred with Betty Lane Cherry, a former Miss World, in Town Theatre s 40th anniversary opening production, Time Remembered. (The theater is now in its 97th season.) In his later years George found great fun in racing radio controlled model sailboats. George died in mid-february at the age of 83. Fifteen days later the love of his life, his wife Chee-Chee, also passed away. The Columbia Sailing Club had some remarkable sailors setting its original course. George R.P. Walker, Jr. was one of them. PAGE 5

Board boats, not on trailers, shall have the owner s name (in small letters) on the transom. Youth Sailing Camps NEW Junior Sail Camp this summer! CSC Youth Sailing is adding a 3 full day camp from 8:30 to 5:30 June 1, 2 and 3rd. The new camp was added to attract private school campers before they head to the beach for first week. Private schools last day of school is May 27th. As of this writing, we have already received a camp registration for the new camp. We expect a sell out at 15 campers. (see flyer on page 7) Q2 Dues Invoices for Second Quarter dues and fees will be delivered no later than April 10.
