At the Helm Commodore Jan Jernigan Welcome to October at CSC. It is such a beautiful time of the year at Lake Murray! We were blessed to dodge a major storm in the Midlands known as Florence.

We were very fortunate to have so much teamwork to help protect our beautiful club. I hope you were able to attend the Party on the Porch hosted by Lee Bell Clayton and Alecia Milling September 28 th.

Thanks to all of you who came to honor new members and welcome prospective new members. A good time was had by all.

1 At the Helm Commodore Jan Jernigan Welcome to October at CSC. It is such a beautiful time of the year at Lake Murray! We were blessed to dodge a major storm in the Midlands known as Florence. Many of our friends in the Carolinas were not so lucky. Thanks to all of you who helped us hunker down at CSC during the storm. We stored 420 s in the clubhouse and the BIC s in the Beach House. We were very fortunate to have so much teamwork to help protect our beautiful club. I hope you were able to attend the Party on the Porch hosted by Lee Bell Clayton and Alecia Milling September 28 th. Those two ladies know how to put on a great party! The band, Cuz and the Live Ones, our own David Mosley s band, were rocking on the porch. Thanks to all of you who came to honor new members and welcome prospective new members. A good time was had by all. Congratulations to our Vice Commodore, David Mosley, for doing such a wonderful job recruiting new members. The club just keeps getting better and better! Thanks to all of you for engaging so many good prospects for our club. This fall promises to be a delightful time at CSC. Please note that our Fall Work Day will be October 20 th. The Midlands Regatta is November 3 rd and 4 th and our famous oyster roast is going to be November 10 th. Please come be a part of it all! You will be glad you did! The Vice Report Vice Commodore David Mosely Hurricane Florence slowed us down but did not stop us! We pushed forward with the End of Summer New Member Happy Hour on Friday September 28 th.

As you see below, we have six new prospective members coming before the membership committee in October. This year we have brought in nine new members and we re on track to double that!

New faces, new volunteers with many incredible talents that will help us pave new ground with junior sailing, dinghy sailing, high school sailing, and even crazy Sunday afternoon renegade sailing!

I encourage you to come out on a Sunday and watch the kids, Gamecocks, and adults sail around our lake and utilize the wonderful facilities that we have created.

Because he is Palmer McArthur's grandson, Jimmy has sailed all his life. Logan has sailed with him since meeting him in college ten years ago.

New Member Applications: Jimmy Fowles is a CPA at G&P Trucking. He is sponsoreded by Nora Fowles. Jimmy s wife, Logan, is a former preschool teacher that is now a stay-at-home mom. Because he is Palmer McArthur's grandson, Jimmy has sailed all his life. Logan has sailed with him since meeting him in college ten years ago. They have spent lots of time at the sailingclub with us as guests in recent years and would like to be able to come to CSC whenever they want. Their two little boys think the beach area is super fun! Jimmy and Logan currently have a Sunfish and a Helms 24 named Happy Ours. Mary McFadden is a busy mom and grandmom. Mary is sponsoreded by Nora Fowles. Mary s husband, Earl (Mac) McFadden is an orthopedic surgeon with Palmetto Health USC Orthopedics. They have 4 grown children, two married, two engaged, plus two toddler grandsons. The McFaddens have had many sailboats over the years and currently have a Hobie Wave and a Super Sailfish. Luke McFadden just finished his orthopedic residency and fellowship, and works with his father and the other Moore Clinic physicians at Palmetto Health Orthopedics. He is sponsoreded by Nora Fowles. Luke and his wife Christine have a son who is almost 2. currently own a Sunfish. They Linda Young is a financial advisor with Preservation Specialists here in Columbia. She is sponsored by Andrew Clarkson. Linda has one son, Matthew (1998). Linda grew up sailing her family s two Sunfish with her three sisters in upstate New York. Linda spent five years crewing on a traditionally-rigged schooner in the BVI s then on a motor-sailor up and down the Eastern seaboard. Linda completed the Women on Page 2

Linda currently owns a Sunfish which she purchased a year ago and she is seeking a land parking spot for the boat. Tyler Goldbach was born and raised in Rocket City USA (Huntsville, AL).

Linda has lots of catering experience and experience running special events. Linda currently owns a Sunfish which she purchased a year ago and she is seeking a land parking spot for the boat. Tyler Goldbach was born and raised in Rocket City USA (Huntsville, AL). He is sponsored by Peyton Hassinger. Tyler grew up enjoying doing anything outdoors: Hunting and fly-fishing to mountain biking and rock climbing. He attended undergrad at the University of Alabama, medical school at the University of South Alabama and recently began his residency training in emergency medicine here at Palmetto Health Richland. Tyler s first introduction to sailing was in undergrad when he went on a weeklong vacation to the British Virgin Islands on a 50 Beneteau monohull. He fell in love with sailing immediately. Tyler s mom had sailed Prindle catamarans in college so when he moved to Mobile, Alabama for medical school, he bought a 1989 Prindle 18-2 beach catamaran and taught himself to sail using the book, Catamaran Racing: For the 90s by White and Wells. During his four years in Mobile, he sailed as much as possible on the bay. Regina Willoughby is a ballet dancer, teacher, and studio owner. She is sponsored by Bill Freeman. Her 23 year professional performing career began at Ballet Austin and culminated as the highest ranking ballerina with Columbia City Ballet. Regina is currently an adjunct professor of dance at USC and owns The Academy of Lexington Youth Ballet. Regina has been married to Jason Willoughby for 22 years. Jason is an Iraq war veteran and current instructor at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. They have two daughters-sierra and Melina. Sierra is studying mechanical engineering at USC and works for DHEC in the dam safety program. Melina is studying nursing at Midlands Technical College. Regina is Basic Keelboat 101 certified through American Sailing Association. She was first exposed to sailing while a crew member on Frank Pierce s Shoo Fly. She has since been involved with Columbia Sailing Club s Women on Water classes and a ladies sailing clinic in a Sunfish offered by CSC s auxiliary. Regina has also been seen racing on a Club 420 on Thursday nights with Bill Freeman. The Willoughbys are looking to own a Catalina 22 and are ecstatic about sailing on Lake Murray. Please continue to welcome and include new members in CSC activities as they occur! Tyler wants to join CSC because to want to learn how to sail properly from more experienced sailors. he also wants to gain experience with other boats. See you on the water! David Page 3

The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert Well it is Fall. Although while I write this it surely does not feel like it as the heat and humidity continue to plague us.

To register we are going to use Regatta Network again, as we did for the Summer Series, and payment will be made to me either by check or cash.

4 The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert Well it is Fall. Although while I write this it surely does not feel like it as the heat and humidity continue to plague us. I hope everyone came through Hurricane Florence OK. We really dodged a bullet with that slow-moving storm. The Fall Dinghy Series starts on October 7 th with a 2PM Warning Signal. To register we are going to use Regatta Network again, as we did for the Summer Series, and payment will be made to me either by check or cash. At this writing we are still working on the details for accessing Regatta Network via our Club Website so I will be sending out a note once that is finalized. Crawford Milling has graciously volunteered to be Race Committee PRO along with Michele Davis. We thank them for their expertise as we know RC can be a challenge. We should have a great series as the Renegades, led by Margaret Clarkson and Rich Horton, have been out in force on Sunday afternoons to the delight of all who have been participating. The Midlands Regatta will be here before we know it on November 3 rd and 4 th and as noted earlier, we are expecting over 100 participants. I encourage all CSC members that have been sailing in the Dinghy Series to register and be part of this exceptional regatta. I promise you will not regret it. I will be placing a volunteer sign-up sheet in the Canteen so please consider And the Winner is Fall has arrived and it is time to recognize those who excelled in sailing or service to CSC in This is your opportunity to nominate those club members who deserve one of the CSC annual awards listed below: Outstanding Service Award to a person who spends countless hours in service of the Club. Sportsmanship Award to someone who both practices good sportsmanship in competition & promotes the sport of sailing. Outstanding Sailor Award to the person who has successfully competed in numerous regattas during the year. Wallace Wilkins Memorial Outstanding Crew Trophy to crew who has sailed in numerous regattas during the year & exhibited outstanding crew work. Outstanding Junior Sailor Award to the person under the age of eighteen (18) who has successfully competed in numerous regattas during the year. Outstanding Junior Crew Award to a crew under the age of eighteen (18) who has sailed in numerous regattas during the year and has consistently exhibited outstanding crew work. Junior Sportsmanship Award to someone under the age of eighteen (18) who both practices good sportsmanship in competition & promotes sailing. For the Midlands Regatta, we will need assistance: Kitchen, Parking, Launching of boats, assisting the race committee, Clean up Thanks! LMYRA had its first race September 8 th immediately following the Dam Swim for Drew. CSC graciously allowed their marks to be used for the Buoys to mark the course the swimmers followed from the Irmo side to the Lexington side of the lake. The new playground is complete, and the kiddos are enjoying it thanks to the efforts of Allie Hassinger, Kim Milling, Jan Jernigan, and Dan Clayton.

All these events bring us together and make our club a fantastic place for sailing, education and family fun.

Over 40 people attended and the CSCA appreciates their participation and fellowship.

We hope you will join us, meet some new friends, and support our club with your ideas and talents.

5 breeze was rewarded as they got the race in. We regrettably had to cancel the Fall Classic for lack of sign up in a timely manner as the budget for a regatta is based on a guesstimate. If and when participants we guesstimate isn t even close, there is no choice but to shut it down. The next LMYRA Board is going to be reaching out to the membership to get ideas on how to best format this regatta moving forward. See you on the water!!! Our club is the busiest I ve ever seen it, and I m so excited about our new members and their families sharing in our CSC traditions. As the club grows, we will continue our old traditions and begin some new ones. All these events bring us together and make our club a fantastic place for sailing, education and family fun. The Grill Your Own on Friday, September 7 was elegantly hosted by Karen Counts and Marybeth Mahrer. Over 40 people attended and the CSCA appreciates their participation and fellowship. Tuesday, October 9, at 7 pm a CSCA meeting will be held with the premeeting meal at 6:30, compliments of Allie Hassinger and Hilarie Brush. We hope you will join us, meet some new friends, and support our club with your ideas and talents. This is a busy and productive time of year and it s a great way to make new friends and get involved. Our Annual CSCA Meeting will be held Sunday, November 11, at 3 pm when we will confirm new officers. Friday, October 19, at 7 pm is the Annual Wine and Cheese Tasting at CSC. Please join us for a special night at the club that has become an annual favorite! The cost is $20 and one bottle of wine per person. Your stemless CSC wine glass will be waiting for you upon your arrival when you RSVP to Kim Milling D.milling@sbcglobal.net. We are requesting help for setup/cleanup, it s just one hour before and after the event. We hope you ll pitch in and join us! Contact Kim Milling to let her know you would like to help. Sunday, November 3, is Midlands Regatta Burger Lunch hosted by the CSCA. Cost is $10 per plate, cash/check. Join us in slicing, dicing, and flipping burgers! It s a great way to meet your provisional member hour requirements. We usually begin about 10 am and keep busy until the burgers are gone around 2 pm. Oysters and Frogmore Stew Frogmore Stew, a dish originated in a small low country fishing community on St. Helena Island named Frogmore after a National Guardsman from Frogmore who cooked a meal for 100 soldiers using a family recipe. The delicious stew is sometimes called Low Country Boil or Beaufort Stew. Please bring a side or dessert to share If your last name begins with letters A-M, please bring a favorite vegetable, casserole or other side. If your last name begins with letters N-Z, please bring a dessert Pirate and other nautical costumes both encouraged and welcome! Please bring your oyster glove and knife.
