Since I m certain sailing will be ably covered under the Rear Commodore s Report, let s just stick with the more mundane but crucial behind the scenes work of your board and committee chairs. The November BOS Meeting During the November meeting the board gave final approval for the plans and financing for the new Beach house. Then the contract for construction was signed with Weathers Contracting. CSC s high school sailing team under the leadership of Maria Dehart and great coaching from Ryan Hargrave continues to improve its record. Though October s Halloween Regatta in Augusta had to be canceled due to Hurricane Matthew, CSC s high school sailing team came together for practice and was set and really showed their skills at the Midland s regattas.?? Boat Masters Jerry Jowers and Hammond (Scooter) Edwards reported that after many months of hard work, consultation and skilled coordination, all club power boats are in good working condition. The CSC Annual Meeting On November 10th, there was a strong showing of membership for the annual meeting. But I m not vain enough to think that the draw was for anything other than Kim Milling s delicious chicken and PAGE 1

Treasurer Robert Key reported that a loan to refinance the clubhouse was signed. At this juncture I would like to mention that due to Robert s savvy negotiating skills at the closing, the loan rate was lowered by nearly a full percentage point from the quoted rate, and the loan closing fee was lowered substantially to boot saving the club a pile of money. Great Job Robert! The Nominating Committee presented the slate of new officers, which was enthusiastically approved before anyone could jump ship. Please join me in congratulating Dan Robinson moving up to Commodore, Jan Jernigan as Vice Commodore, and welcoming David Mosley to the flag officers coup as Rear Commodore. In additional Craig Milling, Charles Bumgardner and Jim Edwards were elected to the Board of Stewards. Membership committee will add Wayne Smith, Peter Korn, and Robbie Garfield to it s ranks. Thank you each and all! One more Thank You I don t mind telling y all - this year has flown by. When I went back through our monthly board meeting agendas and minutes, several reoccurring topics emerged. These include re-powering club markboats, land parking challenges, the beach house project, and of course the many great individual and clubwide success of CSC sailing. In this 60th year of the Columbia Sailing Club, I m pleased to report that our finances are strong, Membership is robust, and our facilities are unmatched. My job as commodore has been both enjoyable & fulfilling. I owe this all to each of you. I ve said this before and I ll repeat it again. We are a family. And like most families, we re not always going to agree, but at the end of the day we always seem to end up on the front porch with a good beer and an even better story. So please accept our genuine thanks for allowing Caroline and I to be part of this family. Whichever faith you practice, Caroline and I wish each of you a very warm and happy Holiday season. PAGE 2

3 CSC Auxiliary News President Jayne Boyle As the year comes to a close I would like to thank all Auxiliary Members for supporting our sail club and the many activities we participated in throughout the year. I would especially like to thank our Vice President, Kim Milling, our Treasurer, Pat Freeman and our Secretary, Beverly Beauregard. You ladies are a true class act and it has been my pleasure to serve alongside each of you. I would also like to introduce our new CSC Board Members for 2017! President Kim Milling, Vice President Diane Augsburger, Treasurer Pat Freeman and Secretary Diana Wrisley. I am most confident that these very capable ladies will lead the Auxiliary through another outstanding year and I wish them all the very best! The Fall was a busy time for CSC. We started with the LMYRA Fall Classic and I would like to thank all those who participated to make it a successful event. In October the Auxiliary raised decorating and furnishing funds for the new Beach Sailing Center/Bath House at the Wine and Cheese Party, where a crowd of over 75 enjoyed a wide array of select cheeses and the opportunity to taste assorted companion wines. A special thank you to Kim Milling for the decorative planning and conceptualization of this fruitful event. Your keen eye never ceases to amaze me! In November we celebrated the Midlands Regatta, beginning with CSC s traditional Oyster Roast and concluding with a burger luncheon served on that Sunday. Again, thank you to all of those who ensured that this would prove to be another extraordinary event. Ahead of us in December we have our final CSCA event of the year with our Christmas Social on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:30pm where we will participate in our Give and Take gift exchange. We have also adopted another Sistercare family this year. Thanks go to Diana Wrisley for coordinating efforts to help enable another family here in the Midlands to provide a gift-filled Merry Christmas. I very much appreciate the efforts of all of you who, independent of CSC, open your hearts to our neighbors in Sistercare and remain socially aware of this wonderful organization. And a few final thank you s. I would like to thank my husband Rich and children, Matt and Katherine for proofreading! You all are the best. A big thank you to Diana Wrisley. You have been a tough act to follow and have been right there for me along my path. I appreciate your wisdom and friendship. And lastly, but first in my heart, to all of you capable, lovely and hardworking Auxiliary members. you ladies are graceful, committed and awe-inspiring. I have the utmost respect for each and every one of you. I m wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and looking forward to seeing you all in the New Year! PAGE 3

4 The Vice Report Vice Commodore Dan Robinson Membership Cary Palmer has submitted his application for Provisional membership, and he is sponsored by David Mosley. Cary is a former CSC member who is ready to rejoin the club and spend time again with his sailing buddies at CSC. He and his wife, Jeri, are the proud owners of an Olson 29 named the Red Pyrate. Education The Dreher Shoals Sail and Power Squadron presented America s Boating Course at the club on Saturday, 10/29/16, which concluded our educational events and open houses for the year. The following article appeared in the Lake Murray News on August 18, I wrote it to take advantage of an offer from the Lake Murray Country Tourism Office to spotlight our club in the newspaper. We have much to be thankful for this holiday season, and this article illustrates why I am thankful to be a member of CSC. I hope you are as well. The Columbia Sailing Club When a newcomer walks out on the front porch of the Columbia Sailing Club (CSC) for the first time, their response is usually one of surprise and wonderment. The view is like no other on Lake Murray. For longtime members of the club, the surprise is long past, but the wonder is still there. With an open expanse of water to the south, brilliant white sails move boats in graceful rhythm with the wind. It is a sight usually reserved for picturesque seaports. Beyond the draw of natural beauty, the love of sailing and camaraderie among sailors has been the cornerstone of the Columbia Sailing Club for nearly 60 years. From its beginning in 1957 to today, CSC is a vibrant sailing club that continues its mission to promote the PAGE 4

5 The Vice Report (cont.) sport of sailing in the Midlands area. Central to the mission of CSC is education in seamanship, sailing, and boater safety. Each year, the club hosts summer Youth Camps that teach youngsters the basics of sailing and safe handling of boats. In addition, the club offers clinics on sailboat racing and rules. For novices who want to learn more about sailing and CSC, the club also holds public open houses each year. The Gamecock Sailing Club also calls CSC home for its collegiate sailing training, practice, and regattas. This group of University of South Carolina students has access to the club s boats and competes with other university sailing clubs from around the southeast. The enthusiasm and energy these young adults bring to the club and the sport of sailing is invigorating. The current clubhouse with the familiar blue roof was built in 2008, and its spacious interior is a year round haven for club members and their guests. To the east is the beach and campground, which are popular in summer. CSC also has boat slips available to members that provide excellent shelter for boats up to 38 feet in length. With most of conveniences of a marina, it provides easy access to larger boats. Those with smaller boats can park their trailers on the property and launch them on the club s boat ramps. The sailing calendar begins with the Easter Regatta, which draws sailors from around North America. This regatta is known for its high level of competition and classes of high performance race boats. CSC is famous for its Southern hospitality, and it is on full display during Easter weekend. The sailing year ends with the venerable Midlands Regatta, which began in It is an open regatta for all sailboats and sailors of all ages. On the same weekend is CSC s World Famous Oyster Roast, which is the perfect complement to a great sailing event. During the summer months, the Thursday night dinghy races feature small boat racing right in front of the clubhouse. Spectators sit on the porch and comment on the skills and tactics of the competitors. After the racing, the sailors enjoy a meal together. It s a great way to spend a summer night. CSC has proven that it can host large national regattas with spectacular success. The US Sailing Championship of Champions Regatta was held at CSC in 2013, and it featured top level sailors from around the country competing on Lake Murray. In 2015, the US Sailing Junior Women s Double Handed Championship featured 80 young women from across the US contending for the championship trophy. With all of the amenities and activities that CSC offers, most members agree that the heart of the club is its membership and the CSC Auxiliary. As a non-profit organization run by volunteers, the large number of activities scheduled each year, both sailing and social, is a testament to their commitment to the club. Since 1957, the Columbia Sailing Club has not only endured, but thrived. The keys to that success have never changed: the joy of sailing, good friends, and that front porch view. The wonderment never ends. PAGE 5

It has been a year filled with lots of sailing including the LMYRA series, the Easter Regatta, Gamecock Sailing, Sunfish Racing, the Youth Camp, the LMYRA Fall Classic, the SAYRA Club Challenge and the Midlands Regatta. Whew! What a wonderful and very busy year for CSC! Each and every one of the aforementioned sailing events was hugely successful! Thanks go to David Van Cleef and Roger Dougal for making the USC Gamecocks real contenders in intercollegiate racing. Thanks to all the club members for their unwavering support of this fine group. Elaine Parshall competed in two major sailing events, the US Sailing International Women s Keelboat Championship in RYE, NY, and the SAYRA Club Challenge in Charleston, SC. She made us proud in both regattas. She also gave a lot of her time to help coach those who wanted to take their racing skills to higher levels. Thank you, Elaine! Mac McCallum did a super job chairing the Midlands Regatta. We had 97 boats register! That is not a typo we had 97 boats!!! Sarah Weiss and I worked hand in hand with Mac to make this popular family regatta a winner! Margaret Clarkson helped with registration and Charlie Brooks did our scoring. With all of those boats, neither job was a small feat! Rich Boyle and his crew put on the best Oyster Roast ever, as promised. We had 3 race courses and a lot of activity going on at the club. Thanks to Dick Dommel, Elaine Parshall, Sarah Weiss, Mike Brothers and all of the race committee crew who made this very successful regatta happen. This was a Laser District 12 Championship and I am pleased to announce that the Lasers won the Williard Davis Trophy. Then to wrap up a winning weekend, Kim Milling and her crew from CSCA cooked up the best burgers in town! We owe a huge debt of gratitude to CSCA for all that they do to keep our club running smoothly. And many thanks to all of you who pitched in to make CSC the best! Our members and volunteers have made 2016 a remarkable year!! PAGE 6
