Lee Bell Clayton and Alecia Milling did a great job putting together a fantastic party in honor of our new members. It was a huge success! There has been plenty of good sailing going on at the club from the Women on the Water (WOW), Wednesday Night Races, Thursday Evening Summer Dinghy Series to the busy summer camps. The campers have been so excited to get out on the water! The addition of the BIC s has made such a difference for these young sailors. Thanks to all of you who helped make this possible. As I drove across the dam earlier this week, it was a wonderful sight to see all those campers sailing on Lake Murray! Kudos go to David Van Cleef and his team for running such successful programs. You will be glad you were a part of it! Jan The Vice Report Vice Commodore David Mosely The new members happy hour was a huge success; many thanks to Alecia Milling and Lee Bell Clayton. We have five new prospective members who are active sailors and are interested in the activities at CSC. From sailing camps, we have more interested parties. We hope to have another new members happy hour at the end of the summer. Special thanks to the membership committee and to those who are sponsoring these new prospective members. Larry and Rhea s passion for sailing includes chartering adventures in the BVI s and Leeward Island, a 7 day live-aboard course, and Larry winning his class and regatta in the 2017 Heineken Regatta! Larry says they have three reasons for joining the club. First, We really love sailing and want to do more of it. Second, Even though I m a retired science teacher, I very much enjoy teaching children and adults, He appreciates the social aspects of this club. A chemistry graduate of Illinois State University, Larry held positions with Coca-Cola and Borden Dairy. He is a NASA Solar System Ambassador volunteer educator. Rhea is an accomplished artist and enjoys quilting. David Krausz is sponsored by Leigh Talmedge David has been an active racer on the San Francisco Bay on Ultimate 20 s (his current boat), many big boats including Oyster 80, SC 50, and Holby Quest 33, as well as 7 years campaigning an Express 27. David has bareboat Page 2

chartered seven times, and his significant other, Lou Ann, is also an avid big boat racer. David moved here to help his father and to manage their property business.

David was acquainted with Steve Rose and was encouraged by Emily Fox and Leigh Talmedge to join CSC.

Dave, an operating partner with Tazza kitchen in Forest Acres, has long been affiliated with CSC and sponsored the famous Outback Cup for many years.

He says this business has taught him many handy man skills that could benefit the club. He is also eager to race, help with race committee, and be an active member of this club on his Ultimate 20. Dave Desseyn is sponsored by Joe Reyes David and Karen Desseyn are former members of CSC and are looking to get back into the club after a brief hiatus. Dave, an operating partner with Tazza kitchen in Forest Acres, has long been affiliated with CSC and sponsored the famous Outback Cup for many years. With 30+ years of Dinghy sailing that includes Lasers, Sunfish, and Highlanders, Dave also has 30+ years of racing experience on keelboats such as Santana 24 s, Catalina 22 s, and a Hunter 34. David sails currently on his Hunter 34 out of WPYC and is looking forward to berthing at CSC. Dave and his wife Karen have two grown children who reside in Nashville: Taylor (1989) and Brannon (1992). Michael Sims is sponsored by Jim Givens Michael and his wife Britt own a Hutchins Compac 16 and are looking forward to restoring it and getting it on the water. After returning from a long sailing adventure around the BVI s, they are excited about learning to sail their new boat and look forward to teaching their kids to be knowledgeable boaters and sailors. Michael and Britt anticipate being active in CSC s programs. Michael is president of Hook and Gaff, an angling/watersports company, where he has met many boat manufacturers and non-profits who focus on conservation of water resources. His wife Britt owns and operates two Chic Fil-A s. Michael and Britt have three children: Owen (2011), Fisher (2014), and Tatum (2015). They look forward to participating in youth activities. Dean Givens is sponsored by Jim Givens Dean is a former CSC member who grew up attending sailing classes at CSC and sailing his dad s Catalina 30. Courtenay, his wife, is a Lexington County Guardian Ad Litem. Both enjoy working outside. Dean sails a Sunfish currently but has bought a Compac 16 which he and a friend are restoring for use on Lake Murray. Dean is an avid angler and boater on both lake and ocean. As previous members, Dean and Courtney know the club well. They want their two daughters, Hayden (2010) and Grayson (2012), to be active in the youth activities at CSC. Dean works in sales with Johnson and Johnson Spine and is active in his church-mt Horeb. Page 3

David JUNE 22 ND, THURSDAY NIGHT DINGY RACES (PHOTO BY MARK ALEXANDER) The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert Well, summer is definitely here based on the sultry temperatures we have been experiencing. The increased activity at the club is great to see. The first session of the Junior Sailing Program was sold out and was a resounding success. I had a chance to witness a couple of sessions watching the kids in the new Bics along with the 420 s, Opti s and Sunfish. The fun and the energy they provide makes me want to be a kid again! I have so many summer memories of my two sons growing up at NBYC. David VanCleef has recruited some outstanding coaches whose interaction with the kids is a pleasure to watch. These coaches include Alec Beauregard, Zoe Genet, Brook Hagler and Ryan Hargrave, all US Sailing Level 1. These coaches are assisted by Apprentice Instructors Jackson Avery and Bane London. If you get a chance to come out to the club during the week to see them in action, I am sure you will love the experience and atmosphere. As a side note, people driving over the dam have seen what is going on in front of the club and find their way to CSC to Page 4

The Summer Dinghy Series has started; we had eight boats the first night and have had three more sign up since. Remember club boats are available if you are interested. Please contact David Van Cleef to arrange. I would like to recognize and thank Colin Widener for his donation to the Junior Sailing Program from the proceeds of the dinner he served at the first Dinghy Races. Remember we are racing every Thursday evening until August 9 th and there is a dinner sign-up sheet in the Canteen if you are interested in serving one evening. Thanks to all who have already signed up as your efforts are very much appreciated. Upcoming events are the Single Handed Race July 7 th and the Couples Race on July 21 st. If you have not signed up for the Summer Series and you want to participate in these two races, registration is open on the LMYRA website. Go to the Regatta Network tab to register. The cost is $10.00 for each race. Fall will be here before we know it so please mark your calendars for the Fall Classic on September The Fall Dinghy Series on Sunday afternoons will begin October 7 at 2PM and should be a lot of fun! Temperatures will have cooled down, water will be warm still and generally we have nice breezes that time of year. Our signature Midlands Regatta is November 3-4. We are expecting to surpass last year s 102 entries.. I will be reaching out for a host of volunteers and thanking you in advance for volunteering. Finally, The SAYRA Club Championships Regatta will be October 27 th in Charleston. As noted on the SAYRA website, Some little club in Columbia has won it two of the past three years and don t even sail on the ocean. One would guess we need to, Do it again! June 30, 2018 Doors open at 3:00; Food service at 4:00ish. Diamond Dave Phillips will be cooking our traditional BBQ and Chicken Hash, Rice, Green Beans, Coleslaw and Sauces. Cost is $10.00/adult; $4.00/child age 10 and under. Please bring a dessert to share* Red, White and Blue attire encouraged If you spend the day or evening on the lake, please allow time to come by the club for the celebration, goodwill and BBQ! If you have not sent in a reservation, please come along anyway We will sell tickets at the door until Diamond Dave s Delectable BBQ is depleted. Diamond Dave Phillips will be cooking ribs the night before, as is tradition. Around happy hour time on June 29, you may show up at the club with a cash donation to cover the cost of the ribs. First come, first served! Please note that fireworks will not be visible from CSC property. *Please consider bringing paper product donations for Dickerson Children s Advocacy Center paper towels, tissue, plates, cups and the like. Dickerson Center always needs single serve juice and water. Page 6

7 From the Sailing Director David Van Cleef The Summer sailing season is in full swing. With weekly Junior Summer Camps, Tuesday Night Women on Water, Wednesday Night PHRF Races and Thursday Night Dinghy Series there are plenty of opportunities for you and your guests to enjoy sailing at CSC. Please bring your friends and family to cultivate or discover their unknown passion for sailing and take part in one of our many programs. If I can help in any way, please don t hesitate to ask. A huge thank you to all the members and volunteers that have made the 2018 Summer Program a success. Our instructors along with countless volunteers have stepped up in a big way to make this a great Summer. We still have room in both July sessions so please continue to share with anyone who might be interested. These junior sailors are the future of CSC! The four club-owned Sunfish are ready for use. Boats are fully rigged on the beach and available on a first come, first serve basis. Juniors 16 years and under will require parental supervision. Lifejackets are required at all times. Please respect the equipment and return back in the same shape you found it. Any missing or broken parts should be reported to the Sailing Director. Please enjoy the boats and be safe! David Van Cleef Columbia Sailing Club Junior Program Columbia Sailing Club continues an amazing 2018 Summer Program! With classes for all experience levels, a fleet of Club-owned Optimists, C420s and O'pen BICs, this is the perfect summer to start or expand your sailing adventures. Our full-day (9am - 5pm) one-week sessions are open to the public. You don t have to own a boat and you don t have to be a club member. Each session is limited so sailors can enjoy an outstanding student/coach ratio of 4:1. Session 4 Dates: July 2-6 (9am - 5pm) (No class on July 4th) Powerboat Certification Session 5 Dates: July 9-13 (9am - 5pm) o Beginner Optimist o Intermediate Optimist/O pen Bic Session 6 Dates: July (9am - 5pm) o Adventure Boating o Intermediate Optimist/O pen Bic You may sign up for more than one class.
