Fat Tuesday party. 27 Happy Hour Photo by: Nancy Olmstead Survivors of the New Year s Eve frolic gathered on the CSC beach at mid-morning, January 1st, to go swimming! After this photo was taken Commodore Pete Olmstead said Follow me! and the eager swimmers doffed their fur coats and other wraps and followed their brave leader into the water. Air temperature 34 degrees!!! The swimming was not prolonged, but there were many joyful screams and shouts as these happy souls splashed in the chilly lake. Polar Bear Bob Holloway missed the photo but arrived in the nick of time to join the gamboling in the water, proving that a brisk swim on New Years Day is beneficial to senior citizens. He may inspire some of the club s septuagenarians and octogenarians to join the invigorating swim in 2010! (???) 2009 New Years Day Regatta by Will Haltiwanger Five sailors braved the cold to enjoy the consistent winds consistently changing in direction and strength. It may be known as the Hangover Regatta, but with temperatures in the 40s everyone was being careful not to. Four Sunfish held seven races with George Winners were: Dave Mahrer 1 st Dick Dommel - 2 nd - (One point behind) Windy Key - 3 rd Michael Kapp - 4 th Murray shadowing them in his MC. Windy Key finished strong with 1-2-1, no doubt inspired by a few fatherly comments from Robert on the RC boat between races. Afterward, sailors and watchers enjoyed chili, collards, ham, black-eyed peas, salad and cornbread. Thanks to Carolyn Tupper, Nancy Olmsted, Jim Altman and Anna Haltiwanger for putting on the feast. Steve Szymanski and Curt Rone manned the mark boat and Robert Key worked the RC with Will Haltiwanger. Jamie Tupper and Commodore Pete were helping and encouraging. A crewmember prepares to carefully pack a spinnaker prior to one of the races in the 1973 Easter Regatta. The place? The Columbia Sailing Club. The weather was beautiful and the Yankee skippers and crews loved it. Willard Davis was Commodore and also Race Committee Chairman See page 6 for the reason for this flashback. 2 Page 2 At the Helm by Commodore Pete Olmstead At the Helm The best combination is always a little dab of luck and a lot of brains. I suspect we were particularly lucky when the Club voted to change our by-laws and become an educational institution. This has become a win-win situation. Several of our members have taught classes (Dave and Craig Ness, Robert Key, George Selkinghaus, Bob Bonds, JC Moore, Beth Mathias and Dick Dommel) and the attendance has been overwhelming. The educational mission of the Club, in my view, is one of the most positive things we have ever done for our members and our community. This certainly has promoted sailing. I know when the Club decided on this change there was some opposition, but the results have been beyond any of our expectations. As usual the Club runs by its members just doing what needs to be done without anyone asking. Craig Milling, Richard Leaphart, John Dotterer and John Young re-built the missing stairs from the upper lot to the lower boat parking area. The Club thanks each of you. You just did it! The stairs appeared and no one asked. That's the heart of the Columbia Sailing Club! It's time for another update on the clubhouse repair. There have been two meetings with our builder, Weathers Construction since I last wrote to the membership. The second meeting was held on Thursday, January 22 nd and it did not go as well as I expected. Weathers has asked for time to bring the subcontractors responsible into the repair. This, of course, is unacceptable to CSC. I am concerned about this development and as I told you previously I will continue to keep you informed with both the good news and the bad news. Good Sailing, Pete Dennis Bost & James Dedmon are cooking! Famous Super Bowl Catfish Stew, Cornbread, Apple Cobbler Sunday, February 1st Stew ready & Game starts - 6pm $5.00 per person Bring a snack to share BYOB (Bloody Mary Mix available) Or Buy from the Canteen Please RSVP to James DNR BOATER EDUCATION COURSE CSC Club House Saturday, February 21 9 am 2 pm Improve your boating skills, review the latest boating laws, know how to handle a boating emergency. 3 Page 3 CSC Globetrotters! Last month Hans Nussler s photo at the Marmara Sailing Club in Istanbul was featured in the Telltale. This time, it s Steve Szymanski, Jr., at the Quingdao International Yacht Club in Shandong Province, China. (Formerly the Quingdao Olympic Sailing Center featured in the Beijing Olympics.) Quingdao is a beautiful modern city, says Steve, with lots of foreign investment from Europe. It was a stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race in late January, and is also home to the brewery where Tsingtao beer is made. On the day this photo was taken the temperature was 23 degrees Celsius. Biscuits, Grits n Shrimp School a Big Success Imagine holding a class like this in the kitchen of the OLD clubhouse! Our thanks to Sarah Edwards for the photos of the January 24th Adluh Flour demonstration in the spacious CSC clubhouse kitchen. Adluh s Frank Workman shows how it s done!.and a good time was had by all! Folks gathered in the kitchen around 9AM for a dollop of Bloody Marys and a sweet-potato muffins demonstration. Then, on to revealing the mysteries of kitchen magic with Adluh s biscuit mix, and the creation of apple cobbler with buttered pecans. The morning concluded with shrimp and grits served with champagne. And the sun wasn t even over the yardarm! This event was a first for the Columbia Sailing Club and there s talk about doing it again. Sounds like a great way to spend a winter Saturday! Just before press time we heard that Linda Wilkins had contracted that awful bronchial distress that s been going around. There seems to be no quick and easy cure for it. Maybe some humorous Get Well cards would help? Bob Holloway kept a sharp eye on Jessie Helms to be sure she didn t go away hungry. (She didn t!)

Page 4 CSC Auxiliary NEWS by Jan Jernigan, President Brrrrrr.baby, it s cold outside! As I write this, it s about 24 degrees outside, a lot cooler than the day of our 3 rd annual Polar Bear Swim. That day it was a balmy 33 degrees!!! Yes, a group of us (the crazy ones) participated in a quick swim on New Year s Day It was definitely cold, but so much fun! We followed our fearless leader, Commodore Pete Olmstead into the water and started the New Year with an icy splash! Nancy Olmstead and Mark Alexander were smart they took pictures while the rest of us the water. We had quite a cast of characters the picture on the front page says it all! That was followed by the Frost Bite Regatta and a delicious meal prepared by Jim Altman and his son, Elliott. We are lucky to have these great chefs at CSC! Of course, the night before many of us participated in the fabulous New Year s Eve Party. Melinda Young and her crew sure do know how to throw a party! Her wonderful crew included Frank Young, Susan and Hank Powell, Louise and Jim Givens, and Tracy and Sydney McIver. Great music, delicious food, fireworks, lots of champagne and wonderful people. That sure works for me! February 6 th we are hosting SAYRA (South AtlanticYacht Racing Association) with a welcome reception and cocktail party for their annual meeting. The party starts at 6:30 and should go until 9:00PM. Please come and enjoy heavy hors d oeurves and libations with all our friends from SAYRA. Rebecca Dotterer has graciously agreed to coordinate this reception so you know it s going to be an excellent party! Louise Givens is another lady who knows how to entertain. (That s why she is our new Entertainment Chair.) She started the New Year off right by taking a group to watch the Lady Gamecocks play on January 29 th. On February 24 th, she will be hosting our traditional Fat Tuesday party. Plan on wearing beads and tiaras and let the fun begin! Our first CSCA meeting of the year was held January 13 th. I am pleased to announce we had a tremendous turnout and a very productive meeting. Many thanks to Juli Calhoun and Harriet Zwart for helping me put everything together. Our next meeting will be held February 10 th at the clubhouse at 6:30. Courtenay and Louise Givens are preparing the meal, so please don t miss it. It s going to be great! Happy February and happy sailing! ~Jan Request from the editor: We d love to attend all the events at CSC with camera and notebook, both ashore and on the water, but that s not possible. So, we rely on chair-people and attendees to fill us in on what s going on. Remember, the Telltale is a running history of the club, and as Professor Santayana suggested, it s a good idea to remember history. Contact us anytime at jwrisley@bellsouth.net Jim Altman and his son Elliott showed up at the clubhouse on January 1st with fresh collard greens. What would ham, blackeye beans, and cornbread be without good collards?

CSC Membership by Jamie Tupper, Vice Commodore Page 5 New Member Application: Joe Bouknight - Sponsored by Jerry Howard. Joe and his wife Ella live in Lexington. He owns a Sunfish and would like to buy a cruising boat and develop his sailing skills. He stays busy as the owner of Forest Lake Travel. Welcome to Regular Member: Dennis Anderson has been voted into regular membership by the Board of Stewards. Honorary Membership: Willard Davis, Will Nelson, Tom Waters, Bruce Loring, Betty Flinsch, and Jessie Helms have been approved as honorary members for Passages: We extend our sympathy to Jim Compton on the loss of his father C. M. Chick Compton. Chick was 93 and well known for his community service and as owner of Compton s Department Store. Memorials may be made to the Lexington Baptist Church Building Fund. CSC Senior Member Frank Williams died January 21st. He was 83 and joined the Columbia Sailing Club in He had been retired for quite some time from USC. Our condolences to his family. We ll miss Frank. We were saddened to learn of the passing of Gene Edwards, father of Scooter Edwards. Mr. Edwards was 77, a Columbia native well known and highly respected in the Capital City. He and his wife, Wilhelmina, had been married 52 years. We offer our sympathy to Scooter, Sheri, and the entire Edwards family, Our condolences, also, to Bill Sampson, his children, his mother and sisters on the loss of his father, former CSC member Dave Sampson. Dave was recipient of the club s Outstanding Service Award in The snapshot at right was taken in the spring of 76 at a club cookout. Dave passed away on January 20th at age 77. His family suggested gifts to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais Street, Columbia for anyone wishing to honor his struggle and his memory. Please keep me posted on membership news! Jamie. With SAYRA folks coming to the club for a reception on February 6th, we were reminded of our first big do for SAYRA back in 62. It was the Association s Annual Championship Regatta. (See reminiscence on page 8.) We pulled out all the stops. Even Coca Cola and Budweiser ran ads in our printed program. Coke, in fact, produced a custom ad for inside the front cover, complete with Y-Flyer. The SAYRA officers were: Commodore; John Wrisley, CSC Vice Commodore; Walter Rice, Augusta Secy-Treas, Jack Coombs; Caro. YC 159 boats turned out for the event!

Page 6 Sailing News n Notes Tiller Talk by Hootie Bushardt It is a new year and LMYRA is experiencing a lot of exciting changes. Using the talents of one of our LMYRA sailors, Aaron Kozloski, we have an awesome new website: LMYRA.org. Please, visit the site and let me know what you think. The site includes all you ever wanted to know about LMYRA but were afraid to ask. It contains our organization: Flag Officers, Board Members, By-laws and 2009 calendar of races. Most important it also includes sailing information: Membership form, Series registration form, Sailing Instructions, Rating information, Race results for all of last year, Sponsors, Outback Cup results, and important links to other websites. Everything is up-todate and ready to be used. Make it one of your favorite places for easy access. Now all we need is for you to sign up for the Spring Series (annual membership is included for all skippers signed up for the Spring series as a bonus) or support LMYRA and racing on Lake Murray by becoming an annual member by sending in a 2009 membership form. Both forms are included on the new Website. Don t delay! Sign up now! The old LMYRA site, maintained by Columbia Sailing Club, will no long be updated. We are in the process of removing the old outdated information from this site. Hopefully this will not take long. We are also in the process of changing the links at the various clubs to our new site. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Columbia Sailing Club for supporting LMYRA and sailing on Lake Murray through the years by allowing us to use their site and resources. Thank You, Columbia Sailing Club. Our Spring Skippers Meeting will be held on Friday evening, February 13 th at Columbia Sailing Club. Registration will be help from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The skipper s meeting will be from 7:00pm to 7:30pm. Registration will be open again after the meeting. At the meeting we will elect new officers who will be steering LMYRA for 2009: Steve Szymanski - commodore, Jan Jernigan - Vice Commodore, Beth Mathias - Rear Commodore, Monica Szymanski - Secretary, and Allison Calhoun -Treasurer. We will also present fall trophies and solicit feedback. This is a very important meeting so I hope everyone can attend and spend a few hours having fun and socializing with their fellow sailors. With our excellent new website and the access of everyone to , LMYRA has decided to eliminate the mailing of postcards. The purchase of card stock, stamps and labels can be eliminated. Years ago providing results by significantly reduced our cost and has actually improved our service. We feel that this will happen again. If you have looked at the registration form on the website, your have noticed that the registration fee for all series has increased to $40 per series. That is only $10 per series and $30 for the year. This was necessary due to the increased cost of putting on races. LMYRA rents race equipment: RC boat, mark boat, flags, anchor line, anchors and marks from Columbia Sailing Club. The amount LMYRA paid for this equipment has not changed for 20 years while the cost for equipment, maintenance and gas has significantly increased. Also our insurance carrier had a 16% price increase this year. If you have any questions please give me a call. See you on the water. ~Hootie Flashback 1973 Robby Wilkins has been doing research on the days at CSC when the Easter Regatta attracted some of the big guns in the E scow world who were happy to escape the icy north for fun in the southern sun. We came across some black and white negatives and printed a few. Photos by the editor. Jack Helms (above) ran the line boat at the 73 Easter Regatta. Bob Wilkins operated the walkie-talkie. Y Flyer champion Bruce Loring skippered an E that year. Bruce is an honorary CSC member. Commodore Willard Davis headed the Race Committee. Sam Merrick of Washington, DC won the series. Bill Allen of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, took second. Robby is putting these data together for the National E Scow Association.

Page 7 Meet the Commodore by Alecia Milling & Jessie Helms Pete and Nancy Olmstead are both from Arlington, VA across the Potomac River from Washington DC. His mother was born in Washington DC and his father came from Newtown, Connecticut. His father was a long time Oldsmobile dealer in the Washington area. Nancy's parents came from Yellow Springs, Ohio. After moving to Virginia her father was a printer at the Government Printing Office. Pete and Nancy married in 1967 and had two daughters, Kim and Kathy, who have given them 5 grandsons, (l-r) Brendan, Charlie, Tommy, Cooper, and Peter. Pete started in the car business with his father in 1964 and has been at it ever since. He has been an Oldsmobile dealer, a Lincoln Mercury dealer, a Pontiac GMC dealer, a Porsche Audi dealer and is currently part owner of Jim Hudson Lexus in Columbia Young Nancy Figgins meets Pete Olmstead. What did he say? What was she thinking? He joined CSC in 1980 after being invited to go sailing with Dave Ness on his Helms 24. That's all it took. He and Nancy went in to see Jack & Johnny Helms the next day and ordered a Helms 27 (Miss Behave). From there all they needed to do was learn how to sail. Later Pete & Nancy sailed and raced a J-24, (Walking Man's Friend). Then they moved to Charleston and sailed a Cape Dory 30 and a Hans Christian 38 (Prima Donna) which won both the Alice Cup and the Frost Bite Series in Charleston. While in Charleston Pete was a member of the Hobcaw Yacht Club, Commodore of the Gold Bug Sailing Club, and was a member of the Charleston Yacht Club where he served as Secretary and on the Board of Stewards. Pete's first job, as a Provisional Member, was Telltale Editor. He later served on the Board for several years and was also the Club Secretary. Nancy has always been active in the Auxiliary and served as its President in When he s not busy at work or at the club, Pete enjoys swimming, bird hunting, and spending time with his sweet black Labrador, Hanna. Nancy enjoys gardening and reading. When asked about his goals as Commodore this year, his reply was, "My goal this year is to survive - then he said just kidding". He would like to resolve the building problems with the clubhouse and would like to continue the heritage of our club as a warm and friendly place for our family of sailors. Thanks Pete and Nancy! You are special to CSC! Check the CSC website for info on events scheduled for Note that all dates are subject to change. Alecia Milling reports she has completed the 2009 CSC Yearbook. (No easy task, that!) The electronic version will be posted at the CSC web site..the hard copy will be mailed soon to those who requested it. A tremendous amount of useful information appears in the yearbook, including updated By-Laws and club rules.

CSC is playing host February 6th at a clubhouse reception for representatives from member clubs of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA). The first time the club officially hosted a SAYRA event was August, 1962, when the SAYRA Championships took place here. A couple of paragraphs from a faded TELLTALE report on the event, which taxed our facilities to the maximum. Owing to tight budgets many of the early issues of the newsletter were typed to stencils with a mechanical typewriter and printed on a mimeograph. This Telltale, like the first one in 1959, carried a 4-cent first class stamp. In the 60s inflation began to bite and by 1970 it cost 8- cents to mail one.
