Although there may be fewer events scheduled during the next few months there s still plenty of sailing to be enjoyed around Sacramento and in the bay area. Just look at the calendar above and check out the 2007 calendar at the end of this issue. Next year your board plans to put more emphasis on 1) supporting sailing in general and 2) focusing on special themed events or regattas. We ll be working more closely with the other area sailing clubs to coordinate and support each group s events in an effort to provide you with a more enjoyable and fun sailing season. We ll also try to make sure you re informed about all of the events in northern California so you won t miss out on any of them. Also, don t miss out on the annual awards dinner. This is great opportunity to, as they say, get out the glad rags and have some fun. You are invited to join the Folsom Lake Yacht Club as it remembers 2006 and recognizes those who triumphed on the water at the celebrated FLYC Annual Awards Banquet, November 18th. As always, I hope everyone can join in the fun. Steve

The boys mixing it up VICE COMMODORE S REPORT S20 - Everyone is invited to the annual Santana 20 Fleet 12 party. It is going to happen this year on December 1 st, at Stephanie & Mark s house in Elk Grove, starting at 7:00pm. We will present the annual Fleet awards, talk about next year, elect a new fleet captain, and eat, drink and be merry! Watch for more information to appear on the fleet web site ( in the next couple of weeks. VC Another year of racing has come to a conclusion. The final day of racing for the Fall Series was held on October 14 th. Five dinghies came out to play, along with Phil Hodgson and family. It was a very nice day, but unfortunately the wind didn t make an appearance. The boats just managed to get a full A course race in, with Bob Backer dominating the race. The 2 nd race was just a ½ A course, which took almost as long as the first race. Again Bob was able to let out his trademarked Yahoo as he led the fleet 3
across the finish line. The 3 rd race was intended to be a short beat to a temporary mark, a run to mark 4, and a reach to the finish at mark 3. However, I (as RC) took pity on everyone and finished them at mark 4. Once again, Bob was in front, completing a clean sweep for the day. Mark WOW!! What a Mess!! 4
SECRETARY NOTES Minutes from General Meeting, October 10, 2006 A very pregnant Carolyn and devoted hub, Mark, were only two of the members who were at Rogelio s. Gary and Karen were there, as were Steve, John, Mark and Stephanie, Marie and George, Tom Goodwin, Lanette and Dave, Tom and Sandy, Mike and Madelyn, and Michael, Chris, and Greg Rhode. Tom gave a delightful thank you speech for his win at the centerboard race. Instead of only winning, his proclaimed goal was to not capsize. It was great to see Greg Rhode and his family. Greg recently won FLYC s Governor s Cup, in the open keel fleet. A great time was had by all who joined in the Cap n Ron film festival at Rancho Seco. Mark Erdrich came in 3 rd, Dean Eppley, 2 nd, and Chas Witcher, 1 st in the MegaBytes. Several couples camped over night, but sadly, the Erdrichs left about 1:30 AM, driven out by the riotous fun of the Middle Ages reenactment mead and grog drinkers. Well maybe not all of them. It is reported that there were about one thousand merry-makers at the park. Mark Erdrich took home both the keeper prize and the traveling cup for the Governor s regatta. Steve reminded us that the actual cup had gone missing for many years, when about 1993 it was discovered and reclaimed by former club members. Plans for the upcoming year were discussed. The racing schedule will change somewhat by having fewer series races, and more theme event races. These would be along the lines of the Notes on Boats, the Big Brothers and Sisters, and the like. The Board members, and the general membership are searching for ways to stimulate interest and participation for the events. Gary reported that the treasury is on target for projections for the year. We do need to support the Awards Banquet by coming, and by donating raffle prizes. As the Whaler ages, it s bottom keeps getting softer. If anyone finds a REAL DEAL for a replacement, call Steve Galeria, or Phil Hodgson. Karen reported that seven couples from the FLYC or FLEET 4 membership are joining the BA_HAHA cruise this month. They will rendezvous in San Diego Oct 30, join the party, and be off to Santa Maria, Turtle Bay and Puerto Vallarta. Good luck, all. By 8:30 the meeting was closed, and off we went, another successful ending to our sailing friends. By the way, Carolyn and Mark had their baby, the day after our meeting. Baby Madelaine arrived on October 11, Lanette 5
The Bytes beating the rest CENTERBOARD FLEETS Ten boats participated in the Banshee Steele Cup Regatta and Megabyte Races at Rancho Saco Lake on September 30. Variable conditions and southerly gusts made starts challenging and racing exciting. Thanks to Hart Sail Design for the Banshee trophies and Stephanie, Sherron, Mary and Daria for doing race committee. Congratulations to Geoff Baxter for winning the Banshee Fleet and Charles Witcher for winning the Megabyte Fleet in the five race event. Many of the group stayed to see Wind projected on the side of the RV that evening. It sure is fun to watch a movie under the stars. Thanks to John Poimiroo for use of his projector and Charles Witcher for supplying the sound system. Sunday morning the group visited the Society for Creative Anachronism s temporary encampment at the lake where they were re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. On Saturday they had selected their King through hand-to-hand combat involving armored competitors and lightly padded sticks (ouch!). It was an interesting visit and amazing just how many people were involved in the group. 6
We estimated at least 500 period people were there with all their trappings. It was a big operation. We were all thinking the Banshee or Megabyte top mast sections would make great jousting poles! Once through with our history lesson, five boats participated in fun races for the rest of the afternoon. We all had a great time. We ve made reservations for next year September 28-29, 2007 and hope to see you there! Dean Name Class Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Race 4 Race 5 Total Place Geoff Banshee Craig Banshee Tom Banshee Steve Banshee Jerry Banshee George Banshee DNF 31 6 Kerry Banshee Charles Megabyte Dean Megabyte Mark Megabyte BANSHEE BEAT The Steele Cup / Banshee Pacific Coast Championship was a great success at Rancho Seco last month. I believe we had 6 bird boats and 3 Mega Bytes. The MB's were scored separately but it was good competition to have them on the course to bunch up the starting line. The wind was fluky as usual but there was some wind each race. Thanks to Hart sails for the trophies, FLYC for promoting the event, Dean Eppley for all the planning and the Race Committee Ladies. Next year I'm offering my boat to the first lady who says I d sail but I don t have a boat to sail. I heard the annual film festival was a lot of fun. This year included the great sailing movie "Wind" and other festivities. There was fun racing on Sunday as well. Kimberly and Ethan (my big kids) took turns "racing" with me while the other boats sailed fast around us. The Turkey Shoot is coming up Saturday November 11 at Lake Washington Sailing Club. See you at Baker s Square on Harbor Boulevard before, for breakfast. Geoff 7
FLEET 4 RACING NEWS The Fall Series ended with Fall #3 in mid-october. The race committee got in three races in beautiful weather. One keelboat and five dinghies competed in the races, but no Fleet 4 members raced. This was the final racing event for FLYC this year This will be my last article as Racing Chairman (at least for a year!). Mike Rayfuse will be taking over the position for I wish Mike the best in his new position; I ll be available to help him and the fleet however I can. Don t forget the Fleet 4 banquet on Saturday, December 2, at My Brother Vinny s Restaurant in Folsom. Tom Page KEEL DIVISION As I said last month, let's get back into those big, comfortable, heavy. stable boats for a Winter Series of fun. Ask a few guests to go along with you and your regular crew. We might gain a few more people to join us in our fabulous sport of sailboat racing. When you pull your boat, check its bottom and make sure it s reasonably smooth and clean. And PLEASE, no more excuses about having a slower class which can't race against faster ones. In the Open Division the mathematics of the time correction takes care of differences in boat speed potential. The rest is up to you. George 8
