2 Page 2 THE FLYC TELLTALE Commodore s Column Todd Craig Hello, Fellow Members. April was a very busy month for FLYC and also, a very successful one. The Camellia Cup saw nearly perfect sailing conditions and was one of the best run regattas I've seen in some time. I would like to thank Mark Erdrich for taking charge of the event again this year. I would also like to thank everyone who helped with organization, scoring, race committee and hospitality for your outstanding and invaluable efforts. Congratulations to Charles Witcher for taking the Camellia Cup in his Banshee. sure to check the June Telltale for more information. On a personal note, my Wilderness 30 FUGU is finally out of Mel Morrison's shop and back in the water at Richmond. She has had a major re-fit, a bright red paint job and is ready for action in the Bay. See you on the water, Todd Craig Commodore Treasurer s Report Scott Fredrickson Thursday 4/14 I banked almost $4000, mostly Camellia Cup monies. For the moment, let's ignore the checks that were written. It feels good to have money in the bank : ) Photo by: John Poimiroo The Trans-Folsom challenge was another success in April. We actually managed to complete the full course this year in some highly variable conditions. There was a lot of hard fought action on the water. Congratulations go out to Gary Preston and crew for an outstanding debut performance in his new Santana 20. Wednesday night Beer Can racing begins in May. The informal activity starts at Brown's Ravine at approximately 6pm. The Katherine Eavenson regatta is taking place at Rancho Seco in centerboard boats on May 21 st. The Notice of Race and Registration Form should be up on the FLYC website soon. This is a women's only race and we hope members of all genders will show their support. Our membership meeting this month will feature Charles Witcher sharing some of his sailing knowledge with us. This is guaranteed to be valuable and informative. For June, I'd like to try something a little different for the meeting. Be I haven't yet entered all the expenses, so a final accounting will have to wait until next month, but it looks like we had a financially successful weekend, not to mention the very pleasant spring weather. It was a great weekend!! When the checks are in the bank, and the expenses paid, the Camellia Cup was financially about average. The club is about $1500 ahead, mostly because of registration fees (no costs involved this year) and raffle money (low costs). In spite of nearly $1000 in sales, we only made about $200 on food and beverages, and less than that on t-shirts. And that is with the GIANT discount from the catering company because of their on-time delivery issues an anomaly. When all is said and done, it was an OK Cup, financially. The fuel bill should arrive by today, actually (a few minutes of keyboard pecking and mouse clicking to get the , open and print the pdf file) $60, and we need to make a contribution to the Coast Guard for their patient, stellar work. George and I were glad to pick up a tow line they offered, since the wind was rapidly going away. Continued on page 4...

P.O. Box 156 Surprisingly, very little mail this month, none of it unusual or particularly interesting. -Scott Secretary Report Lanette Strain APRIL 2011 GENERAL MEETING It was a well-attended meeting at Inland Sailing Lecture hall. Barbara and Todd Craig, Dave and Lanette Strain, Kerry and Joyce Johnson, Stacy and Mark Werder. Jim and Lana, Mel, Stephanie Erdrich, Scott Frederickson, Beth and Teresa, and Drake Johnson were all eager to hear about chartering and/or cruising to exotic locales as presented by Gary and Karen Preston. I have a sailing bumper sticker that says ATTITUDE, THIE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORDEAL AND ADVENTURE. I believe that the Prestons truly know how to have adventures. They spoke of places that are good for chartering- Anacortes, Bahia California, Antigua, San Juan Islands, Belize, and Key Largo. Part of the adventure is location, but another part features the on-land activities that enrich a cruising vacation. They ve seen flower gardens on Victoria, B C, and manatees in Florida. On their sailing way with friends to Cabo, there was boat trouble, (which happens from time to time). While waiting for repairs, they discovered a wine region in Baja, adopted a good attitude and had a great alternate time. I think that story ends with public transportation Baja style, complete with live chickens on the roof-top of the stereo-typical Mexican bus. Most recently they were at the Key Lime sailing club in a beach shack. What an AD- VENTURE! Thank you very much, Prestons, for sharing your cruising life with the rest of us. If you, as a FLYC member, have been missing the general meetings, there is fun afoot. There are snacks, and a program, a break, then a business meeting. Bring a snack to share if you want. More importantly, bring a chair for your own comfort. The business part of the meeting was spent in reviewing the CamCup and prepping for the TransFolsom. Lanette Strain, Secretary Former Member News Lanette Strain Many FLYC members will remember college-age Travis Wilson from many years ago. Travis s dad, Charles Wilson sailed in the Cam Cup this year. He gave an update on Travis s activities since we last took note of him. Travis used to sail on the S20 locally, but has moved onward and upward in his sailing career. He has been a nation-wide champion on the S20s, a Melges 32, and a Farr 40. Currently Travis is a member of the Coronado YC. He has crewed on a Lipton Cup yacht, and is sailing a new S 22. You can find him, from time to time crewing for match racing out of St. Francis YC. Travis was home grown and trained at FLYC. Look what he is doing now. Good luck, Travis. Katherine Eavenson Regatta Reminder that the Katherine Eavenson Memorial Regatta is scheduled for 5/21 at Rancho Seco. Come out to support our women sailors and enjoy the great views of the racing.

4 Page 4 THE FLYC TELLTALE 45th ANNUAL CAMELLIA CUP RESULTS El Dorado Hills, CALIF. (April 10, 2011) Charles Witcher s 13-foot Banshee class dinghy, Ghost, was an apparition that could not be touched, as he sailed to four, first-place finishes to win the 45th Annual Camellia Cup Regatta on Folsom Lake, today. In the forty years that Banshees have competed in the Camellia Cup, Witcher s win was the first regatta championship by a Banshee. The 56-year-old Sacramento sailor, representing the Folsom Lake Yacht Club (FLYC), took home the Banshee class and Open Centerboard and Camellia Cup perpetual trophies. The regatta was conducted sunny weather and light to moderate breezes, which blew from 6 to 8 miles per hour. Top Keelboat in the regatta was Prime Time a Catalina 22 captained by Bob Baker, of Sacramento. The fastest Day Sailer was Bubba, skippered by the Gold Country Yacht Club s Mike Gillum of Loomis. Fast Eddie sailed by Todd Craig of FLYC proved true to its name, winning the Santana 20 class. Winning the Open Centerboard class was a Thistle, sailed by Rumbaugh of Sacramento. Class trophies were awarded to the following top finishers (skipper, hometown, yacht club, boat type, boat name, points): Banshee Charles Witcher, Sacramento, FLYC, Ghost, 4 points Pat Seidel, Granite Bay, 1 points Wayne Cassingham, Santa Cruz, US Sailing, Cruzin, 10 points Steve Galleria, Gold River, FLYC, 2 Slick, 13 points Kerry Johnson, El Dorado Hills, FLYC, Spitfire, 17 points Tim Loomis, Fairfield, 22 points Don Bain, Orangevale, 27 points Eric Watt, Hollister, Scuttlebutt SC, Rainbow Warrior, 32 points Day Sailer Mike Gillum, Loomis, LWSC, Bubba, 7 points Craig Lee, El Dorado Hills, Sacramento SC, Vieja, 7 points Dean Iwahashi, Fresno, Long Gone, 9 points Steve Lowery, Santa Rosa, RYC, Security Risk, 13 points Charles Wilson, Morgan Hill, Santa Cruz YC, Blue Bayou, 20 points Dave Keran, Fresno, Fresno YC, Root Beer Float, 20 points Eduardo Grisetti, San Martin, San Joaquin YC, Vagabundo, 25 points Open Centerboard Rumbaugh, Sacramento, Lake Washington SC, Thistle, 4 points George Koch, Carmichael, FLYC, Lido 14, Lidocaine, 9 points Chris Rutz, Truckee, Richmond YC, International 14, Miss Match, 10 points Beth Richard, El Dorado Hills, FLYC, Lightning, Xanado, 13 points Bruce Ryhal, Granite Bay, FLYC, International 14, Scythia, 26 points Wade Hough, Palermo, Butte SC, Raven, Quicksilver, 28 points Catalina 22 Bob Baker, Sacramento, Prime Time, 4 points Don Hare, Roseville, GCYC, No Cat Hare, 9 points

Up front, I would like to thank Stephanie Erdrich for her efforts to arrange for the dinner and her very clever way to keep the table cloths from becoming run-away spinnakers. And for keeping her cool when the catering truck got lost for an hour. I would like to thank Mike and Madeline Rayfuse for organizing the Sunday hot dog fest. And they did this after they got off the race course in the C22 class. My lovely wife Lanette deserves high praise for being the trophy person, the registration person, and the kickbutt person. Ginny Getty-Frederickson did a great job on the t-shirts. She had some design help from friends of Stacy and Mark Werder (thank you to her). Drake Johnson should be at the top of the list for his efforts in acquiring the beer wagon. Team Hart-Witcher should be at the head of the list as well, for their extreme efforts in raising the tent. We didn t need the circus elephants to help-it was all FLYC muscle power. Thank you to Commodore Todd Craig and his lovely wife Barbara for their leadership in presenting computer scoring for the event. And to Karen Preston for doing the scoring and the standings chart. Everyone who donated raffle prizes, big THANKS. The raffle is fun, and the money helps defray the costs of the event. The race committee did a fabulous job. Setting the line is always a challenge when the wind shifts so much. A huge thank you needs to go to the Marina crew who moved the picnic tables. We could have used those elephants for that job. It s amazing that picnic table wood is so heavy to lift, yet it can still float. Kerry Johnson and his side-kicks deserve recognition for taking care of the marks for both the Cam Cup and the TransFolsom. Another BIG THANKS goes to Mark Erdrich for being the CRO and having to not compete for this year. Thank you, John Poimiroo, for the great press releases and PR work. All of these people made the regatta enjoyable, but without the racers, it would just be another fun party. I would especially like to thank the sailors who came from out of town. Dean Iwahashi and Dave Keran from Fresno., Wayne Cassingham from Santa Cruz, Wade Hough from Palermo, Chris Rutz from Truckee, Steve Lowery from Santa Rosa, Tim Loomis from Fairfield, Eric Watt from Hollister, Mike Gillum from Loomis, Eduardo Grisetti from San Martin, Charles Wilson from Morgan Hill. To all of you local sailors, thank you for being so supportive of this event. I know some out-of-towners were staying with locals. That was great. See you all, and even more, next year. 7 THE FLYC TELLTALE Page 7 Trans-Folsom Champagne Challenge Lanette Strain FUN HAD BY ALL; PIZZA EATEN BY ALL The TransFolsom Champagne Challenge was held on April 23, For the first time in many years the complete race course was traveled. This type of race, a pursuit race, featured the varying starts dependent upon PHR ratings. The slower boats crossed the start line at their specified time. The RC joked that in this case, the Catalina 22s probably should have started on Friday. The faster boats, S20 or J22 maybe should have started on Sunday. But they were all there on Saturday. The wind was light and was unpredictable, but it was steady enough to actually sail the entire race course and be finished before dark. There were only two classes; the Santana 20s and a PHRF class. The S20s had good representation and a new challenger-gary Preston on his new-to-him S20. Gary crossed the finish line first, and won the race. Fast Eddie came in 2 nd, with Fusion taking a 3 rd. Jarian Westfall, Charlie Wilson, Mark Werder and Jim Goldberg rounded out the S20s. In the PHRF class, Kerry Johnson on his S23 came in 1 st, followed by George Koch on the J boat, and Dave Strain on his C22.. Jeff Pathman, a newcomer to the race on his C22, and longtime member Clyde Lagomarsino, on his new -to- him C25 rounded out the class. The race committee featured James Zhang, John Speight, Lanette Strain, and Sandy Bob Backer s daughter. We had a great time, too. I would like to thank everyone personally for making this race so successful. Lanette Strain Photos by: James Zhang TRANSFOLSOM RESULTS 2011 There were only 2 classes for the TransFolsom, the Santana 20s and an all-inclusive PHRF fleet. Since the race was actually completed, the finishers placed in the order they crossed the finish line. Plus, they were also scored within their own fleet. Results are as follow: Place Name Elapsed time #1 G. Preston 7:23.17 S20 #2 T. Craig 7:24.52 S20 #3 K Johnson 7:25.39 S 23 #4 G. Koch 7:38.31 J 22 #5 M. Erdrich 7:47.52 S 20 #6 C. Wilson 7:54.08 S 20 #7 J. Goldberg 7:54.18 S 20 #8 M. Werder 7:54.19 S 20 #9 D. Strain 8:34.37 C 22 DNF: C. Lagomarsino, J. Pathman, J.Westfall Gary Preston won the First to Finish perpetual trophy. Congratulations.

8 Page 8 THE FLYC TELLTALE Wednesday Night Beer-Cans Mark Werder FLYC summer officially kicked off last Wednesday with the first of many Wednesday night beer-can races. For those unfamiliar, beer can racing is informal fun open racing without an R/C or the pressure of a bigger regatta. All you need is a boat and a good attitude. We usually meet near the top of the ramp around 6pm or on the water near the center pin around 6:30pm. Course will be called on the water and no official time will be kept. It's a great opportunity to practice in the evening delta breeze and meet other club members. For the first race of the season, mother nature presented us with a challenge. Upon arrival the lake was as flat as a mirror. In attendance we had three keel boats, a Ranger 23 owned by Mike Meyers, a Catalina 25 owned by Drake Johnson and I was lucky enough to borrow Jim Goldberg s Santana 20. Todd and Barbara Craig put their Banshees together and waited for wind that never filled in and opted to head home. The three keel boats motored to the South Fork in search of wind and were finally rewarded with a light northern breeze coming from up river. We all managed to get in a couple tacks and ended the day with a good long spinnaker run back to the marina. I certainly learned a couple of lessons while on the water.. 1: If you borrow a boat, check the fuel tank.. 2: If you run out of gas, hail Mike on his Ranger 23 as he had an extra fuel tank. 3: If you borrow a boat, pay attention to the motor type, 2 or 4 stroke 4: If you need oil for a 2-stroke, hail Mike again since he apparently has 2-stroke oil as well despite having a 4-stroke motor (which had me wondering what else Mike had onboard) Mike certainly saved the day and I owe him a six pack for sure. If you are on the fence about racing, get out to Folsom on Wednesday night. It s no pressure and despite the wind challenge, we all had a blast. We even met a potential new member who crewed on Mike s boat. He was able to make the crew connection through the FLYC facebook page. If you are looking for crew or to be crew, check it out. Santana 20 Fleet 12 News Mark Werder April was certainly a good month to be a Santana 20 owner on Folsom Lake. Action Action Action!! For Camellia Cup we started 5 Santana 20 s which is less than last years numbers but those that came out were not disappointed. The sun was out and the wind kept every boat moving competitively. Congratulations to Todd and Barbara Craig for taking first place in the 20 class. There was plenty of close action at the starts and during the very last race we saw the wind die as the fleet neared the finish. I understand that several of our members had conflicts that weekend, hopefully that won t be the case next year. The race committee did an excellent job running the race and I didn t hear a single negative comment from anyone. I ll let the picture below speak for how good the conditions were.. Photo by: Kim Palaferri Next up, our class dominated the ranks at the Trans-Folsom regatta with 7 S20 s starting. Unlike some years, we were able to complete the full 21 miles. Congratulations to our newest 20 owner Gary Preston who also finished in 1st place. The course and wind certainly kept everyone guessing as we would go from a flat water lull to enough wind to wipe out spinnakers. All the competitors stayed focused for those 7+ hours and after 21 miles, three of the 20 s ended in a photo finish with only 10 seconds separating them. At the end of May, at least two of our local boats will be travelling to the Whiskeytown Regatta near Redding CA. Check the calendar for other well attended S20 events this summer like High Sierra and of course the Class Championships. -Mark #126 Reaction

9 THE FLYC TELLTALE Page 9 Banshee Beat Steve Galeria Way to go Banshees! The overall winner of the 45 th Annual Camellia Cup Regatta, April 9 th & 10 th, was won by Charles Witcher with four first place finishes, sailing his Banshee Ghost. Also, the Banshees had the biggest fleet in the regatta; 8 boats. And three racers were from outside the Sacramento area; Vacaville, Hollister, and Santa Cruz. Clearly the Banshee fleet is one of the more active / competitive fleets and growing larger each year. Speaking of being active, don t forget the Wednesday night beer can races have started. Todd and Barbara Craig came out just this past Wednesday to race their Banshees against three keel boats. Although the wind was light that evening (the boats went up to the South Fork) this is the best time of the year for this kind of casual/fun activity; light breezes and not too hot yet. The next big Banshee event will be the Whiskeytown Regatta, May 28 th & 29 th, near Redding, California. Several racers, eight so far, have said they plan to attend. In addition, several other FLYC members will also be competing in this regatta, which means there will be a large social gathering Friday and Saturday night at the FLYC / Banshee compound. So, no matter what boat you have come on up and join in the fun. BANSHEES fun people, fun times.
