They say violators could be fined $25,000. You may wash your boat with just water and a brush, but you will need to bring your own hose. Cold Open Will Deutsch I have returned from my trip to the UK. I raced and I sailed and I raced. I ll be giving a talk about my trip at the next FLYC General Meeting! As the rumors have stated I ve done something really stupid and gotten myself a single handed skiff, a Swift Solo to be exact. I felt I just wasn t swimming enough when I sailed the Banshee and I needed a reason to have a wetsuit and to buy a drysuit. I ve been working on my new toy before I can take it out sailing. I added a mast carrier to the trailer so I don t have to car top the mast. I ve been learning to set it up and what parts I can leave rigged. I ve also been updating a few things that are not up to the current class standard. This is mostly due to the fact that the standing rigging was just replaced and not yet set and needed to be worked on anyway --- so now was the time to update it while I had to muck with it anyway! I think it has more lines than the S20: 3 halyards (jib, main, kite), cunninghams for both the main and the jib, vang, primary shroud adjusters, cap shroud adjusters, main/jib relativity, main sheet, kite sheet... most controls are double ended and all have multiple purchases. The mast is light carbon and the shrouds are all vectran lines. I ve been talking with the local and national class guys and can t wait to get the boat wet -- hopefully in the next week or two. It would be a whole lot easier if we had water in the lake! The cup boat regatta was a lot of fun. Emma was very excited our boat did well and very confused at winning another cup. It wasn t quite what she was expecting when she heard prize! All three girls had a lot of fun. As always it was a great night. Page 2

Commodore s Column Mark Werder Hello FLYC members!! Did you lose something in the water last year and want it back? Now is your chance, for a limited time (hopefully) most of the bottom of Folsom Lake is visible. Go get that lost anchor, wallet, spinnaker pole etc. Just don t forget to bring a kayak since there are officially no launch ramps in service now. Oh wait... there was sailing at Folsom in August.. small boat sailing on the straits of El Dorado (ie John Poimiroo s house) The cup boat regatta was back in action with some new designs and some younger design teams fighting for that coveted Cup boat trophy... another cup! Emma and Will won the evening with the fastest boat while my catamaran won the best design but lacked the sailing characteristics to navigate John s pool. Maybe a rudder would have helped. Always a fun party and with the lack of Lake events, it was nice to catch up with our members. Like I mentioned last month, sailing was limited in August to only those willing to travel a bit. I was fortunate enough to be invited as foredeck to crew with Mark Erdrich and Austin Quilty at the Santana 20 Class Championships in Eugene Oregon. The racing was hosted by the Eugene Yacht Club at their facility on Fern Ridge Reservoir. As the only out of town boat racing against 14 local boats we had the odds stacked against us but managed a decent 6th place overall. There is a full report on conditions and results on the class website S20.org. Speaking of 20 s... my S20 is now comfortably tucked in at Brickyard Cove Marina in Point Richmond. I chose this spot for the proximity to Richmond Yacht Club and the excellent hoisting set up. After a bit of an issue getting the right lifting ring, 2-Step went for her first bay sail August 30th. Sarah Goodwin rounded out the crew as we sailed down to the Brothers, around red Rock and back to the harbor enjoying one of the nicest weather patterns I ve seen. If the weather continues like this I might even get a tan while sailing in the Bay. The current plan is to race Great Pumpkin and the Berkeley midwinters with a return to Folsom Lake in February. While I was out of town for the S20 Championships, FLYC hosted the Steele Cup regatta out at Rancho Seco. I m looking forward to hearing more about it next time I see Craig and Mary or maybe even an article on the race in this Telltale? Page 3

SAVE THE DATE: November 14th FLYC Annual Banquet Details to follow in the October Telltale! Normally at the start of September we would be looking forward to racing Governor s Cup and closing out the season but with the water low, we ll have to settle for some out of town racing and a membership meeting. -- Joyce Johnson The meeting this month will be a whole lot of me talking with my presentation on our pacific cup preparation. Come to the meeting and get a feel for what going to Hawaii the hard way is like. The meeting will be September 8th at the Broadstone Round Table pizza in Folsom starting at 7pm. I m looking forward to hearing everyone s summer sailing stories. Should be a fun night. I m still looking into getting a FLYC group kayaking trip going along with encouraging local sailors to try one of the upcoming out of town races like Big Dinghy at RYC or Turkey Shoot at Lake Washington in November. Just one more thing... our infamous mast climbing Telltale Editor Will Deutsch has a new toy, a swift solo skiff. Look this boat up on the web and let me know if you think we should sell tickets to watch Will s inaugural sail. One thing is for sure, it s a really cool looking boat and if Will can get good at sailing it, he ll be able to sail just about anything. Should be fun! See you on the water... er dry lake bed. Mark Werder Commodore commodoreflyc@gmail.com Page 4

Treasury Report Scott Fredrickson.and, yet another short report this month. Two checks this month, $50 to PICYA for the annual yearbook, and $65 to El Dorado County for taxes. There was a surprise $3 charge from BofA last month, apparently for photocopying the one (1) check on the statement. I ve not seen this before, so I may need to look into the issue if it happens too often. querydaily?s=fol The handy link in the LibreOffice file actually works!! The lake is down another 20 feet this month, currently 366 ft. I haven t spent much time thinking about sailing this summer. Water, yes, but not sailing. Sail magazine goes unread. With no water, there are no landscaping chores up here in the hills the grass is mostly brown and dead. Fires everywhere, lousy air quality some days, it s depressing. SO looking forward to fall and cooler weather. I LOVE sailing Folsom in the fall!! Plenty of beach space for the dogs and I to explore, cool nights, gorgeous night skies...oh, yeah... maybe next year. Secretary/Membership Report Barb Craig We have a new member, Duncan Smith. His membership is being processed. We hope to see him soon. Additional FLYC decals can be purchased for $3 each. As always, if you visit another yacht club and exchange your FLYC burgee on behalf of the club, let me know and I ll provide you with a new FLYC burgee. If you plan to go somewhere exotic and want to take along a FLYC burgee to exchange, let me know and I ll provide one. Barb Craig FLYC Secretary/Membership Page 5

Our Club Will Deutsch Our club is in something of a crisis. We have money - we have members - but out members in leadership are burning out and there is no one willing or able to pick up the slack. Our vice commodore is moving (We will miss you Beth - come back to race with us!). Our commodore is stepping down to focus on his PacCup prep and race. We currently don t have anyone to take their places. I think a lot of this is compounded by the lack of water in the lake. When the club is not actively racing it is a lot less of a cohesive club. We ve talked about other activities we can do, but we don t have anyone to drive those activities. What about you? Are you willing to step up to a leadership position? If not -- do we have a club? Can we have a club without leaders? How do we organize CamCup next year? We are in the middle of trying 4 year drought. Our race season is only about 1/2 of what we want it to be. We lost our excellent meeting space that fit so well with our mission. However, we still have members that are out and participating. We had great numbers at all of our events this year. We even have a great volunteer turnout. It would bed a shame to lose all the good because of a bit of bad. Page 6

Banshee Beat Steve Galeria This year s Steele Cup Regatta and Banshee Pacific Coast Championship was another fun event and lived up to everyone s expectations; unless you are like me and expect to win a lot more races, or at least one. But that was not to be, because the competition was and always is very good and I should have know better. Even so, it was a great day and we all had a lot of fun. The weather, wind (5-8) and sun (80-85), was near perfect for the time of year and we had the lake pretty much to ourselves. The race committee, a very experienced and playful group of volunteers, did a great job. I think we got in six short (due to the nice breezes) races; no two races were the same and there was even one downwind start. After racing we got together for the annual pot luck late lunch, which as we all know is always a pleasant surprise with great food, more than we can eat, and lots of desserts. After having our fill at this family friendly lunch while talking about what went wrong and what went right on the water we handed out the awards. And the winner was CRAIG LEE! Craig finished in first place, was awarded the Keith Steele Cup, given a bottle of fine wine, and is the 2015 Banshee Pacific Coast Champion. Charles Witcher was 2nd, Wayne Cassingham 3rd, Steve Galeria 4th, Kerry Johnson 5th, Will Deutsch 6th, and Rob Cram 7th. In the Open Centerboard fleet two boats raced to a tie; each boat won three races. However, by following the rules of racing and awards, John Poimiroo and Katie Deutsch sailing a Lido 14 were declared the winners because they won the last race. Steve Aguilar, sailing a Laser, was second. The Banshee Lake Series standings have been recently updated. With just two regat-tas left in the series the competition for bragging rights is getting a little tighter. Current-ly the top five are: 1. Charles Witcher, 2. Wayne Cassingham, 3. Steve Cassingham, 4. Steve Galeria, and 5. Dean Eppley. For more details about the standings and to see who plans to race in the last two regattas check on the Banshee Fleet One website. The next big Banshee event will be the Total Dinghy Regatta, September 19-20, 2015, at the Richmond Yacht Club. This is a two event at a wonderful venue; protected race course area, clubhouse, bar, launch facilities, and showers. There may be RV overnight camping for interested sailors. [5-8 Banshees are expected]. Coming Events: - Turkey Shoot Regatta, November 14, 2015 BANSHEES - Fun Boats, Fun People, Fun Times Page 7

Fleet 12 News Will Deutsch An excellent race report by Mark Erdrich for S20 Nationals: The newest version of the crew (Me, Austin, and Commodore Mark Werder) gathered on August 13th for at Fern Ridge Reservoir for the 2015 Santana 20 Class Championships. After getting the mast up and the sails checked, we first retired to the local roasted Chicken/ Calzone restaurant for lunch. After lunch, we finished rigging the boat. Then we found out they were having water level issues too. In fact, the lake was down a whole 5 feet! Because of that, we couldn t use the hoist, but had to ramp launch. And here we were with our hoisting cable and not our ramp launching straps and lines. Turned out that was ok too, since they have a line to launch with. And I think we would have needed 4 of our straps to launch the boat. That ramp was so flat that you literally had to start on the grass above the ramp! After getting the boat launched, we took it over to a slip and got ready to sail. We were sailing our practice race at the same time as the local Thursday night series. Instead of sailing, Andrew Kerr (the North Sails Instructor and multiple Class Champion) was out videotaping the boats before the start and during the race. He would show the tape after sailing and critique us all. When we first got out there in about 10 knots of wind, he asked us to sail closed hauled and spent about 5 minutes commenting on what we were doing (we haven t heard his exact words during this session since he was paraphrasing during the discussion, but I think they were mostly complementary). We got a decent start, but thanks to Austin finding a couple of wind lanes and favorable shifts, we were just behind the leading boat about ¼ of the leg when we found out there was a (silent) general recall! So, we went back and did it all again. This time we were in the top 5 at the first mark (a double windward-leeward) course. We gain a boat here and there, and were in 3rd going around the last leeward mark, but managed to pass one more boat for 2nd. Too bad it was just a practice race! Friday, the Santana s had the course to ourselves (the weekend we would be racing as part of their annual Harvest Day Regatta). The first race was a little light (6 knots or so). We (ok, I) didn t get a great start, and we went right since the forecast called for the wind to go right. It didn t. We ended up that race in 10th place. After sitting around for almost 3 hours, a nice breeze came in from the West (about 10 knots). Another not so good start, but we battled back, and Austin and Mark found some good wind lines, and at times we were leading the entire fleet. We managed a strong 3rd place finish, so at the end of day 1, we were tied for 5th. H2O Boa sailed by Gordon Mattatall (one of the top Eugene boats) was first with Andrew Kerr 2nd, 2 points behind. That evening was the annual class meeting. Not a whole lot of discussions, but somehow I managed to get myself elected as the class secretary. When am I going to learn to say no? Saturday, the wind was anywhere from 6-12 knots with a bunch of wind shifts. We did well when we got the right wind lane, and not so well when we didn t. The first race we got a 5th, but didn t do quite as well in the other 2, with 8th place finishes in both races. At the end of day 2, we were once again tied for 5th! Up at the front Gordon was still Designer of the 2010 Santana 20 Class Championships and 2011 Cameilla Cup logos leading, but only by a single point over Andrew. For the 3rd and final day of the Class Championship, we had a little more wind. Ok, a lot more wind. Usually around 15 knots, with get the right look for your business or event. (916) Page 8

gusts up to 25! A few of the boats changed down to a jib, but with 3 bigger people, we didn t. The first race of the day is the one I d like to forget. Just about anything that could go wrong did, including all of us completely misjudging the time to get to the start line. We ended up starting a full minute late! But, we found a great wind line, and were in the upper half of the fleet at the weather mark. After a fast ride back to the leeward mark (another double windward-leeward course), we were someplace around 6th or 7th. Shortly after rounding the leeward mark, a pretty strong gust hit us, and as I was tugging on the extension tiller to keep the boat under control, the rubber piece connecting the extension to the tiller broke! Instant auto tack (luckily one of the few times we didn t have another boat close to us). We finally got the genoa uncleated and the boat back under control. Several years ago, the same thing happened to me when sailing at Huntington Lake, and when I bought the replacement piece I was amazingly clairvoyant and bought two. And, believe it or not, I actually had it in the boat. It took us a couple of minutes, but we got the piece replaced and were back at full speed. When we got back to the weather mark, we were stunned to find that we were still in the hunt and were in about 8th place! During that downwind run, one of those 25 knot gusts hit us, and I still don t know how we didn t stick the pole into the water! We got down to the leeward mark, and started rounding it, but then the spinnaker halyard ended up in a huge knot. We finally got that cleaned up, and started heading to the finish. We ended up in a place where we could ace out about 5 boats (all within the space of 2-3 boat lengths). Except, the wind decided to shift the wrong way. We now needed to tack to reach line. That would put us on port with boats below and boats above. The only chance was to tack and immediately duck the boat right above us, and then immediately tack back. But, fate intervened once again! As we are ducking the boat and getting ready to tack back, the extension tiller separated from the tiller once again. Apparently, I never got the replacement fitting all the way seated (you try it while driving in 15 knots Not easy). We ended up having to duck everyone in the group and going from 5th place to 10th place. And the boat we were tied with? They finished 5th. We rebounded back with a good solid 5th place in last race (only had one issue when the spin sheet went under the boat during a drop), but still ended up 6th for the event. And Andrew Kerr on Disaster Area had a perfect day winning both races and becoming the 2015 Class Champion (his 9th or 10th Santana 20 championship). We had a great time up at Eugene. As usual, the members of the club were very welcoming with volunteers creating great dinners each evening we were there. The only real disappointment was that we were the only boat that travelled to the championship. Hopefully next year there will be more boats able to head up to Klamath Falls for the 2016 Class Championships, to be held in conjunction with their Firecracker regatta. Page 9

Catalina 22 Fleet 4 Dave Hewitt For over 40 years, the Catalina 22 National Sailing Association has held an annual National Championship Regatta ( Nationals ), inviting Catalina 22 sailors from across the United States to bring their best equipped boats and crews to compete for the prestigious title of Catalina 22 National Champion. To help make sure the event is truly national in nature, the Nationals are rotated across three regions - East, Central, and West to give Catalina 22 skippers an easier opportunity to participate. For 2015, the Catalina 22 Nationals were in Portland, Oregon, and hosted by Catalina 22 Fleet 20 and the Small Yacht Club of Oregon (SYSCO). The venue for the event was Hayden Island, Oregon, sailing the adjacent waters of the Columbia River Three boats represented Northern California this year. Shark Bait (FLYC), sailed by Dave, Paul, and Carson Hewitt, competed in the Silver fleet. Colonel Mustard (LOYC) competed in the Gold fleet and was sailed by Doug Brennan, Gary Preston, and Scott (last name?). Don Hare and Bismark Dinius raced No Cat Hare (GCYC) in both the Gold and Spinnaker fleets. In all, eight boats competed in the Silver Class. A majority of the Silver fleet was from the greater Portland area. Six boats competed for the title of National Champion in the Gold fleet, with boats coming from CA, Texas, Florida, and Oregon. Six boats sailed in the Spinnaker class. Competition started Saturday evening following check in, measurements, and a practice race. All races were W-L with an offset mark at the windward mark and a gate for leeward. A single race was sailed Saturday in winds to 16 knots at 7:00 pm. Two things became obvious in this race: current would be a major factor in judging starts and laylines, and it would be late nights for all. Saturday s breeze had us excited for the next day s racing, but the breeze never materialized Sunday, so the AP flag hung over the lawn where we all ate, drank and socialized. Friendships rapidly formed that would last through the competitive sailing for the remainder of the week. The wind returned Monday, and we sailed nine more races over the three remaining days of the event. The spinnaker class held a total of four races during the regatta. At the end of the week, the Northern Californian boats would take first in the Silver Fleet (Hewitt), second and fifth in the Gold Fleet (Brennan and Hare, respectively), and fifth in the Spinnaker Fleet (Hare). Randy Pawlowski, coming from Sanford Florida, took the top spot in the Gold Fleet with a one point lead over Brennan. The event wrapped up with the obligatory awards banquet and raffle Wednesday evening. All in all, the C-22 Nationals were a fun, well organized event with good racing and beautiful scenery. Don Woodhouse, who is the Captain of Fleet 20 and the Vice Commodore of the National Sailing Association, complimented the racing with numerous social events, including an incredible salmon feed serving fish caught by him and his son. Next year s Nationals will be hosted by Fort Walton Beach Florida, which sounds like a long way to haul a boat, but look forward to the C-22 Nationals returning to the West for 2017! Page 10
