They say violators could be fined $25,000. You may wash your boat with just water and a brush, but you will need to bring your own hose. Cold Open Will Deutsch So I must apologize - I m very sick again. Pneumonia is a horrible terrible life sucking illness. I d really like to say that I ll never get it again but that has yet to be true in the 4 other times I ve had pneumonia so I doubt it will be true this time. This issue of the Telltale has been sitting open in Adobe InDesign for 2 weeks now while I suffer and fight this petty little illness. I did accomplish one thing and basically only one thing while I have been in the throws of this illness. I went down to the San Francisco Yacht Club and took the ISAF Safety at Sea class. It was a pretty cool experience. While I ve been seen very publicly floating in Folsom Lake with my life jacket deployed after capsizing a Santana 20. This was a chance to actually practice swimming and the HELP posture both by myself and as part of a group from two to eight. Learning to get in and out of a life raft both in and out for the water is not what you would expect. It was also fun to get to light off flares and practice with a fire extinguisher. As far as flares go - don t count on the USCG match strike flares - we had more failures that success with those flares. They were also not very bright. Spend the money to the get the SOLAS flares if you ever intend to actually use your flares. Doing all of this with a 103 degree fever added to the challenge. The winter season has let us down. We have not had the rain/snow we needed this year. The lake management changes put in as response to the drought seem to be working. We have been told to expect water until June/July. We will see if it holds out. Hopefully we will be able to stretch our water until the end of the summer this year but I wouldn t count on it! Our club is doing amazing things. Steve Galeria is doing a great job getting Cam Cup up and running. This should be a great year. We are getting ready for the Trans Folsom (my personal favorite). Page 2
Commodore s Column Mark Werder Hello FLYC members!! Spring is here in sooo many ways!! I ll start by saying that this is probably my favorite time of year. I spent my last Friday afternoon of February working from home on what has to be the perfect weather day. Small wispy clouds occasionally cover the bright sun. It s around 68 degrees out and I m lounging in my backyard in a t-shirt. The laptop is fired up but barely a distraction against a backyard filled with spring blossoms and my dog trying to get some much needed attention. Birds are chirping, there are fresh mandarins on the tree, no leaves to rake and what s left of the drought tortured lawn is filling back in. Spring is here for our club too!! Boats can return to their slips, something we didn t hear till almost April of last year. The lake is holding around 425 feet with the rumor being water till June. Like I said all of last year, go get some sailing while you can!! Some have already taken that advice. The Spring series has seen 5 Santana 20s, 2 Catalina 22s, 1 Catalina 250, 2 Hobie 16s and a Lido. All have been enjoying the spring winds and excellent water conditions. I suspect the centerboards will be out in force now that the weather is getting warmer. I personally haven t touched the Banshee all winter but our new Santana 20 is sitting in 3rd place after two races. As the word gets out that we have water and nice weather we may see a surge in race attendance for race 3,4 and 5 of the series. Ever thought about cruising to Mexico or the British Virgin Islands? Steve Armstrong gave a fun presentation on last year s Baja Ha-Ha cruise down to Mexico in the February meeting. Something I know is on many sailors bucket list. We held the February membership meeting at the Round Table pizza in Folsom for the first time this year. The room was a little noisy but will meet our needs for the rest of The next meeting agenda includes a special presentation on cruising the BVI s, presented by new FLYC members Suna and Kim. I m certainly looking forward to it!! Got a story or sailing advice to give, let me know and we ll get you on the presenters list for a future meeting. Finally, Camellia Cup planning is well under way. Steve Galeria is rallying the volunteer troops and we already have 8 boats registered with many others saying they will attend. Our regatta was recently designated the Western Regional Championships by the Santana 20 class and we have already seen boats from out of town signing up. Great news for me and my crew as the S20 s may have a shot at the overall Camellia Cup trophy with a large fleet in attendance. The logo and t-shirt design should be done soon featuring a Banshee in honor of last years winner. Also back by popular demand are the small boats as trophies. Any volunteers want to come over and help me step the masts of 18 little boat trophies. That s all for now, see you on the water!! Mark Werder Commodore commodoreflyc@gmail.com Page 3
Treasury Report Scott Fredrickson February Report... Things are picking up. Closing the 2014 books and setting up the software for the new year is always entertaining. I switched from my trusty Win 2K /Open Office system to Linux/Libre Office this year, and --surprise, surprise!!--simple--i mean 2nd grade simple--math didn t work. After much gnashing of teeth, I finally figured out that the geniuses that wrote LO decided the empty cell defined as text in a column of numbers to be summed is a #VALUE! error. OO saw the empty cell for what it was--0--and carried on without complaint. Columns to be added must be defined as number columns, and any errant entries must be removed with Delete, NOT space --because that s text!! Clever. I never would have thought of it. Wrote the $1850 check for insurance and a couple smaller checks this month. Barely enough membership dues checks to cover those expenses, unfortunately, and perhaps even worse, no rain, although there may be some tonight. We can only hope. (Postscript 2/28...only 0.15 here on the edge of the foothills.) PO Box 156 Another issue of Cruising Outpost, this one looking like a slick Latitude 38 lots of color, photos, features on Vanuatu and cruising in paradisiacal locations. Yet another letter from the Franchise Tax Board threatening to de-list the Folsom Lake Boat Club --the shadow club. This has been going on for years and years. And last but not least, our official member certificate from US Sailing. Secretary/Membership Report Barb Craig Deadline to submit your membership and get into the roster was March 1. I will be sending the roster to the printers this week and you should receive your membership card and roster in the mail in the next couple weeks. We have 20 renewing members registered, and two new membership and one returning membership. Suna Kneisley & Kim Geil are new members and have already been out in the spring series on their new to them Santana 20, Reaction, which was our comodore s Santana 20. Christine Caldwell and Mira Wilkie are also new members, although Christine crewed on various boats the last couple years. Jim Goldberg and Lana Chang have returned to the club, on their new Santana 20 Gratitude. Please welcome our new and returning members. The membership form is available on the website and at the clubhouse. As always, if you visit another yacht club and exchange your FLYC burgee on behalf of the club, let me know and I ll provide you with a new FLYC burgee. If you plan to go somewhere exotic and want to take along a FLYC burgee to exchange, let me know and I ll provide one. Page 4
Banshee Beat Steve Galeria Although the weather has been great, February was a very quiet month for the Banshees. I think everyone must be getting their boats ready for another great year of racing, right? On a different front, things are briskly moving ahead on the building new Banshees project. Mel Morrison over at the Inland Sailing Company & ISC Racing has converted 40% of his store space into a boat production area. This has lead to a slight remodel of the store, kind of what happens when you start this kind of project at home; one thing leads to another. Fortunately for Inland Sailing when the build out is complete it looks like they ll end up with a lot more parts display space in the store area. However, the best part of this is that the boat production area will be right behind the new wall they just constructed and looks to be a very good space for making small boats. It s all just as Mel planned it and right on schedule. Also, just in case you missed the last update: Mel said ISC Racing is building and acquiring Banshee parts. So if you need something Banshee - call the ISC. The Banshee prototype will be built over the next few months and then tested by several local sailors throughout The target date to start building new Banshee boats is spring And, in keeping with Camellia Cup tradition, because Craig Lee won the 2014 Cam Cup in his Banshee, this year s regatta shirts will feature a Banshee in the design. So we re expecting that when each Banshee registers for the 2015 Cam Cup the skipper will want to order one of these special shirts. Coming Events: - FLYC Spring Series, March 7, 21, 28 - RYC Big Dinghy Regatta, April 11 & 12, FLYC Camellia Cup Regatta, April 18 & 19, 2015 BANSHEES - Fun Boats, Fun People, Fun Times Designer of the 2010 Santana 20 Class Championships and 2011 Cameilla Cup logos get the right look for your business or event. 6 Fleet 12 News Will Deutsch This year we have 5 active boats racing the spring series. This is the best turn-out we ve had in years. Mark and Mark are both out. Jim and Lana are back with their new boat. Suna and Kim are out in Reaction with help from fleet 12 alumnus Todd. Currently, Mark E in Fusion are leading the series with 24 points. Suna and Kim are hot on his heals with 20 points in a comfortable 2nd place. This year the Camellia Cup will be the Santana 20 Western Regional Championship regatta. We need to get a maximum turn out of local boats. We have at least two coming form Oregon to race. This is the chance for the Santana 20 fleet to take the cup. We will be close to if not the largest fleet. I highly encourage all Santana 20s to come out for the TransFolsom. It is a great race for a S20 that has a very fair rating and does very well in the light fluky winds we often have in Folsom. Just as a reminder - a Santana 20 has won the TransFolsom 2 out of the last 3 years. Page 6

CAMELLIA CUP REGATTA - Planning Planning for the regatta is going very well. Volunteers started signing up in November and many from last year agreed to help again this year. As you all know it s the team work, positive outlook, and many helping hands that make a successful regatta - - and we ve got a great team again working on this year s Cam Cup. The early planning efforts are generating positive results and it looks like we re going to have another great regatta: 8 boats registered in February; last year the first boat registered on March [Note: We re asking all FLYC members to register in March and encourage your friends to do the same.] Last year 50 boats raced; this year we re expecting 60+ boats Latitude 38 published a short piece on the Cam Cup [March issue, page 95] The Folsom Telegraph and the Folsom Lake Entertainer plan to publish articles on the Cam Cup in March and April The Santana 20 National Class Association has decided the regatta will be the venue for its 2015 Western Regional Championship This year will see the start of a new tradition. In addition to the usual trophies the winner in each fleet will be given an embroidered windbreaker showing that they won FIRST PLACE at the regatta. And, the overall winner s windbreaker will show that they are THE CAMELLIA CUP WINNER. This new tradition is sponsored by the Inland Sailing Company (ISC) Racing, a prime sponsor of the regatta. Cichy Co. Gourmet Food Truck will be serving cooked to order dinners at the regatta; select from 5 entrees and from 7 side dishes (including 3 salads) w/dessert. Also, vegetarian and kids meals will be available. Even with all the good planning there is more work to be done and more help needed: We need more volunteers for the Race Committee We need a team to sell raffle tickets at the dinner We need someone to help sell/serve the beer and sodas We need someone to be the on shore contact at the HQ during the regatta If the Coast Guard Auxiliary can not help, we may need some safety boats We need someone to coordinate the raffle prizes We need someone to be the point of contact for the Saturday dinner We need a photographer to take a picture of each boat on the water and an action series at each of the starts so we can show them before and during the dinner If you can help with any of these tasks, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at (916) No matter your level of support, large or small, please remember the Camellia Cup Regatta is our club s biggest event of the year, and in addition to being a lot of fun it is also an opportunity for each of us to put our best foot forward on and off the water. When you help with the Cam Cup you are supporting the sport of sailing and also helping fellow sailors have fun. Thanks. Page 8
