2 Commodore s Corner Suna Kneisley, Commodore Membership Meeting! Tuesday, September 11 6:30 pm Cabo s Mexican Restaurant 8570 Auburn Folsom Rd Granite Bay, CA Lake level is now '. Please send recommendations for FLYC Board positions to Suna@freedom-mktg.com Vice Squad Kerry Johnson, Vice Commodore A lot of racing has happened since our last update. Unfortunately, I missed most of it so I don t have any stories to share, but you can see the results below. We have one more series to finish the racing year. The Governor s Cup Series kicked off Sunday, September 9th. [The next one is this Sunday, September 16th.] Skippers meeting is at 12:00 Noon, first start is at 1:00PM. This is a four-day series over the next four Sundays. It was looking like we would have to cancel all or part of the Governor s Cup Series as we have a standing rule to cancel races if the water level goes below 400'. However, the water level has been fairly steady for the last 15 days or so, and at the current rate the lake may be above 400' until the day after Thanksgiving (who's up for the Black Friday Cruise?). I plan to hold all four races unless the water flow changes SUMMER SUNSET SERIES Open Keel Boat Type Points 1. And really good news is there s a bunch of stuff that needs cleaning and fixing. So everyone that feels as if they would like to pitch in, please stop by. The fun starts at 10am and goes till 4 pm. On another note, this will be my last year as Rear Commodore. So, I would like to take a moment to explain what it means to be the Rear Commodore. You get to take the club boats out whenever you want, you get to hang out at the lake and wake up the sun, and you re everyone s go-to friend. Of course, it s not all fun and games. You do need to fix and paint the odd boat or racing mark every once in a while. Sometimes the odd job will be too much for one person to handle. Luckily, FLYC has a lot of knowledgeable members that are willing to help out; all you need to do is ask. Consider becoming the next Rear Commodore. You have until the FLYC Annual Banquet to decide if you what to help the club stay AWESOME. Hospitality Report Joyce Johnson, Hospitality Chair SAVE THE DATE! SAVE THE DATE! 2018 ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET Saturday November 10, 2018, 6pm The location and menu are still being finalized as of press time. So please SAVE THE DATE, plan to invite your family and crew. Information will be sent via and on FLYC.org website. Looking forward seeing everyone there.

4 John Poimiroo spoke with Madeline Rayfuse, who said this year's raffle at the FLYC Annual Awards Dinner will have several highly desirable prizes. Still, she encourages everyone to bring prizes and money to spend on raffle tickets. Cup Boat Regatta John Poimiroo, Harbor Master at Straits of El Dorado The 20th Cup Boat Regatta was a rollicking festival of fun, August 14, with Mike Rayfuse and Alexa Cram repeating as senior and junior champions. Winds were strong and steady at the Straits of El Dorado (the Poimiroo pool) this year, due to the addition of fans. Harbor Master John Poimiroo used shop fans stored in the FLYC Clubhouse in addition to those native to the Straits, which were supplemented by fans brought by David Montgomery and Kerry Johnson. However, the additional wind did not stop competing boats from being blown into dead corners of the pool or flipping over, to move only by breezes that brushed their hulls. Typical to this regatta, the outcome of any given race was never guaranteed. Some cup boats sprinted across the pool only to be pushed back by air reflecting the wall at the far end of the Straits, while others moved slowly and surely toward the finish. Winning the award for best design was a cup boat crafted by Steve Armstrong, who cut his styrofoam cup into a flower-shaped design, using the petals as additional sail area, while the "It's Amazing It Didn't Immediately Sink Out of Sight" award went to Nicholas and Norah Cosgrove's boat (the grandchildren of Mike and Madeline Rayfuse), named "Sink or Swim," which almost immediately sank out of sight. as ballast. They compete against each other in double-elimination rounds. This is the only known regatta in which the champion wins an entirely new boat of its class (a styrofoam cup). The regatta was started in 1999 and is open to everyone (not just FLYC members) who likes a fun time and a good laugh. FLEET NEWS Banshee Beat Steve Galeria, Fleet Captain sites.google.com/site/bansheefleetone Again, the Banshees have been flying to all the best local regattas for more fun times. During the past five months they attended seven of the eight scheduled events, and at each regatta they found the sponsoring clubs were wonderful hosts Following is a brief re-cap of these events: Camellia Cup Regatta (CamCup) at Folsom Lake, April Winds were so light on the first day of the regatta (varying from 1 to 4 knots) that racing was abandoned after one race. The next day, the wind strengthened, reaching 10 to 12 knots, which was described by local Laser sailor Steve Aguilar as ideal conditions for dinghies. Only a point separated the top three Banshees in the seven-boat Banshee class won by last year s Camellia Cup Champion, Craig Lee of El Dorado Hills. Lee represented the Scuttlebutt Sailing Club on In N Out. CamCup Results: 1 - Craig Lee, 2 - Wayne Cassingham, 3 - Charles Witcher, 4 - Jeff Nelson, 5 - Rob Cram, 6 - Jack Tatum, and 7 - Tim Loomis. For those unfamiliar with the Cup Boat Regatta, it is a pot luck dinner and party in which participants make model sailboats using a styrofoam coffee cup, plastic sail made from binder dividers, plastic straws (still not outlawed in the Straits), plastic tape and pennies

5 Lake Yosemite Sailing Association Spring Regatta (LYSA) at Lake Yosemite, May The regatta was a big success for the LYSA with a record 40 boats. They had strong wind on Saturday and some funky wind on Sunday. LYSA Results: 1 - Charles Witcher, 2 - Wayne Cassingham, 3 - Steve Anderes, and 4 - Rob Cram. Whiskeytown Memorial Day Regatta at Whiskeytown Lake, May As in years past this was another fun regatta at a beautiful place with terrific camping and racing conditions. The Banshees flocked together both on and off the water. Whiskeytown Results: 1 - Charles Witcher, 2 - Steve Cassingham, 3 - Dean Eppley, 4 - Wayne Cassingham, and 5 - Jeff Nelson. number of Banshees was lite, next year we re expecting the Banshee flock will be much bigger. GFTG Results: 1 - Steve Anderes, 2 - Jeff Nelson, and 3 - Rob Cram. High Sierra Regatta (SHR) at Huntington Lake, July This was the biggest event (nine Banshees), to date, for the fleet. And, thanks to Dori Cassingham and Joyce Johnson, who organized a lot of the camping and social activities, it was another sun event. Oh, and the racing was good too. The host Fresno Yacht Club made some changes to the courses and Mother Nature provided the excellent sailing conditions something for everyone. HSR Results: 1 - Charles Witcher, 2 - Wayne Cassingham, 3 - Steve Anderes, 4 - Steve Cassingham, 5 - Dean Eppley, 6 - Kerry Johnson, 7 - Phil Vandenberg, 8 - Larry Nelson, and 9 - Rob Cram. Folsom Lake Yacht Club Centerboard Regatta, (FCB) at Folsom Lake, July 21 - Although many Banshees were out of town, this turned out to be one of the best Centerboard Regattas in memory. The conditions were so good the first race was started on the main body of the lake using mark #2 as the weather mark, and then racing two miles up the South Fork of the American River to Salmon Falls Bridge finish line. The second race was shorter, starting at the bridge and finishing just before the river joins the lake. As always, challenging and several lead changes. FCB Results: 1 - Wayne Cassingham, 2 - Jeff Nelson, 3 - Steve Galeria, and 4 - Bob Balter. Go For the Gold Regatta (GFTG) at Scott s Flat Reservoir, June Not the usual good turnout, but nonetheless a fine regatta. As many of the Banshees know Scott s Flat always provides something for everyone - lite air, strong wind, and a few unexpected shifts, and this year was no different. Although the

6 Steele Cup Regatta, (SCR) at Rancho Seco Lake, August 11 - This was also the Banshee Pacific Coast Championships and it too had excellent conditions for such an important, albeit casual, event. The winds were better than usual, starting out lite but constant and built with each successive race. There were six short races, each one different, thanks to Mary Neiderberger, the excellent race committee. After the racing, the pot luck dinner / BBQ was fun, as always. SCR Results: 1 - Charles Witcher, 2 - Craig Lee, 3 - Wayne Cassingham, 4 - Steve Galeria, 5 - Jeff Nelson, 6 - Bob Balter, and 7 - Rob Cram. Banshee Parts: Once again, thanks to Mel Morrison, the Banshee Class Association has some additional parts available for sale - six thwarts, five new goosenecks, and more little rubber plugs than the association staff could count. These are in addition to the mast collars (rubber donuts) and other rubber plugs that Mel gave to the class before. Thanks Mel! The rubber plugs and mast collars will be free - we ll just charge for shipping costs, but the thwarts and goosenecks will be sold at a members special price. So, if you need one of these or something else for that matter, contact the Class Association to see if it is available. Coming Events - The last regattas of the year: - Totally-Dinghy Regatta, September 22-23, 2018 at the Richmond Yacht Club. - Turkey Shoot Regatta, November 3, 2018 at the Lake Washington Sailing Club. BANSHEES - Fun Boats, Fun People, Fun Times Catalina Chatter Monte Whitefield, Captain Ahoy All Sailors! Captain Monte here and I hope everyone has had a good summer so far. With the recent fires, sailing hasn t been the greatest, but we keep pushing forward. I want to thank everyone who came out a few weeks ago to hear Don Anderson, from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, talk to us about safety. I heard from other members that it was helpful information. We are hoping to make this a yearly thing. One thing we are hoping to do this fall is to organize a work day/bbq/drink cold beer (at the end of the work party) for people that would like to have help

7 with their boat projects. We at Fleet 4 are of a mind many hands make light work, and we have many people who are willing help out with their expertise and man power. Please contact me if you would like help, and what project you need help on. We are looking for a reason to use power tools! And last but not least, please pray for the people whose homes have been lost by the destruction of these terrible fires. Santana Soundings groups.google.com/forum/#!forum /santana20fleet12 Mark Werder, Captain Fleet 12 was not the most active fleet this summer, but that didn't mean tuna sailors weren't out enjoying their boats. George Heintz brought Reaction out and was the sole S20 in the FLYC summer series. George also was the only S20 sailor in the single handed regatta. After taking my boat home for the summer while racing the Pacific Cup, I opted for using the Catalina 22 in the single handed regatta. Watching Reaction sail solo under spinnaker had me missing my S20 for sure. There were sightings of S20s during the beer can racing, and even an S20 entered in the dinghy delta ditch. While the ditch run was cancelled, it answered the question of the LWSC hoist being strong enough to hoist a 20. Maybe we'll see a fleet of 20's at the next DDD run. The 2018 Class Championships were held at Howard Prairie Lake in Oregon. There were 12 boats in attendance with our local boat Fusion being the only non-oregon participant. Mark Erdrich reports it was a fun and very competitive regatta. Nice to see at least one of our boats still hitting the road for away regattas and earning the famous "enforcer" trophy. Next year the championship will be back at Eugene and there is rumblings from my crew that they might want to make the trip. Lastly, I'll work with Mark Erdrich to see if we can resurrect the Fleet 12 end of year party. Look for an invite from me, we'll target sometime in late November or early December. There is still water in the lake, so get out there and enjoy! 2018 Master Calendar Date Day Time Event Location September 9/11/18 Tue 7-9pm Membership Meeting TBD 9/16/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #2 Folsom Lake 9/23/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #3 Folsom Lake 9/30/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #4 Folsom Lake October 10/13/18 Sat 10am FLYC Work Party Folsom Lake November 11/3/18 LWSC Turkey Shoot Lake Washington 11/10/18 Sat 6pm FLYC Annual Banquet TBD 11/23/18 Fri 11am Black Friday Cruise Folsom Lake Racing will be cancelled once the lake elevation reaches 400'
