2016 Turkey Shoot Regatta W I N T E R N E W S L E T T E R LAKE Saturday November 5 Registration for the 2016 LWSC Turkey Shoot Regatta at Regatta Network: clubmgmt/ ap- ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS Thursday November 17 5:00pm Watch for your invitation in the mail. ANNUAL MEETING Thursday November 17 Join us to celebrate our 2016 sailing year at the Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 17! We return to the Club Pheasant in West Sacramento, starting at 5:00 for a Social/Happy Hour. There will be a meeting to elect officers for the coming year and the issuance of various awards. A popular award is the Frog Award - given to those who tell the best story about memorable capsizes. Cost for the dinner is $30.00 (including tax/tip/dessert.) Beer or wine can be purchased there, or you can bring your own beverage with a corkage fee of $10. The evening ends about 9pm. Also, note that we elect a new board at the Annual Dinner. As Rich Glovin wrote: Being a board member is a great opportunity to be more involved in the Club and to meet more of our terrific members. I ve met many of my best friends through the Club, and am constantly amazed by the fabulous people our Club attracts. You thoroughly will enjoy the experience. If you are interested in serving on the Board, contact Richard Leijonflycht (rhleijon@pacbell.net) or David Potter (debspotter@gmail.com) for more information. The Last Hurray for 2016: The Turkey Shoot Our next and final sailing event is the annual Turkey Shoot regatta on Saturday evening, November 5. This popular regatta is known for its good-sized fleets (Thistle, Banshee, Megabyte, Daysailer, FJ, Laser, Sunfish, El Toro, Windsurfer, and Lido) that battle for the big prizes: Turkeys! This regatta is open to any centerboard sailboat or pre-approved keelboat up to 21 feet in length. We provide OneDesign and handicap racing, prizes for the sailors and food for all. The chili is great! Since this regatta attracts a large number of boats, it makes for a very busy day at the club and requires many volunteers to be successful. Please consider joining us to make this event a highlight for our club and the sailing community. Information and a link to sign up using Signup Genius is on the club website and Facebook. regatta_id=13512 Contact Dave Candey or Steve Willett for more details. By Steve Willett, Sailing Captain
ROLEX Big Boat Day Sept. 18 LWSC Member, Greg Rohde, raced a J111 in the Rolex big boat race at St Francis Yacht club on Friday. LWSC was well represented in the viewing area! Dan Clark, Steve Willett, Rich Glovin, and Dave Suder cheering on from SFYC! Nice viewing area! : Cynthia Shallit and Mark Sabin join the Potter Yachters in their Richmond Event, Sailing from Richmond Harbor to Angel Island. Thistle Class National Championships Eugene Yacht Club on Fern Lake Reservoir Lake Washington members who sailed: Mike Gillum, Allison Gillum, Dan Clark, David Suder, George Biery, Lisa Wilson, Debi Glovin (Women s Championship and Nationals), and Rich Glovin.. Mike tied for fourth in the Championship Division, and Dan took fifth in the President s Division. See Reflections on a Great Regatta in this newsletter. LWSC members participate in many other events around the region. The Laser sailors often participate in weekend regattas including the Svendsen s Grand Prix. Steve Aguilar was instrumental in organizing that this year. Some of the locations of those events included Whiskeytown Lake, Scott s Flat, Yosemite lake, Richmond Harbor, Lake Tahoe, and Huntington Lake. The sight of a beautiful spinnaker at the ROLEX Big Boat Day.
Youth Sailing From the Commodore s letter: I d like to congratulate George Biery, Tom Locker, Dave and Ben Potter for getting the word out and supervising our junior programs. The programs are bigger and better than ever, including the recently completed Junior Stampede and Sacramento Cup. Recently, George also spearheaded the installation of dock racks for the juniors FJs. See em on Facebook. They look great. The UC Davis sailing team. Eighteen students became LWSC members this year. This Girl Scout Troop took an Introduction to Sailing class. The Youth program had a great summer. Altogether over fifty children participated in the LWSC Junior Summer Camps. It was great to watch the kids play outside and practice their sailing skills. The coaches initiated a new racing series for the youth -the Junior Stampede. See Commodore s letter for more. Our youth classes, and summer camps are kicking Recruitment display at Christian Brothers High School. This is the Davis High School Sailing team. They are joined this year by Christian Brothers, Jesuit, McClatchy, and Rio Americano high schools.
SAILOR! What Is The Captain s Pantry The Captain s Pantry provides snacks and common supplies to members and their guests. We have a number of items available on the Honor System to members, guests, visiting captains and their crew. A cold drink, a snack, even ice cream sure do taste good after a great sail! Each member has a card in the Captain s Pantry Rolodex to track your current balance and to record the date and item that you take from the Captain s Pantry. Please add your purchase to your Rolodex card. Usually members set up their Captain's Pantry card at the time of membership. There is a place to indicate the amount on the membership form. If you have not done so, you can contact, Dave Candey ( ) for more information and to set up your Rolodex card. Honor System: The Captain s Pantry depends on your personal responsibility to track what you consume on the card. Volunteer Work Hours By Dave Candey, Port Captain You can contribute your time and energy during Work Days, during club events like regattas, or on your own time. As Port Captain, there are always tasks for building up and maintaining our facilities and generally for the good of the club. For example, we need help this year with painting and refinishing, drafting and engineering, even paperwork and records. We have some small woodcraft projects. Please let board members know if you have time and interest in working on a project. If you do something for the good of the club, we will credit your efforts to your work hours. Please write your name, how much time, and a description of the task on one of the clipboard pages at the clubhouse. There is a clipboard above the kitchen sink upstairs, in each restroom, in the workshop, and near the support boats. Thanks very much for your energy and support! Treasurer s Report By Laura Schnur, Treasurer Being the club treasurer has given me a unique experience both as a board member and a firsthand view of the club s activities. There is a pulse to the finances at Lake Washington with most revenue coming to the club during spring and summer months, not surprisingly, this being our active sailing time. Winter inflow is slow and mainly the club is paying the monthly bills like electric, internet, and nominal expenses club members may have accrued. Last winter our expenses were much greater with the fantastic new hoist. In the spring the revenues grow with the start of the One Design Regatta Series and Open House. Open House sees the largest influx of new members. During this past summer our largest revenue source in order of dollars contributed was club membership renewals. Number two was the successful High School Sailing/Summer Camp/Junior Program, third this year was new membership, and fourth was the Delta Dinghy Ditch. The club is projecting the use of future expenditures for club upgrades, such as the electronic gate entry system and needed storage. Our plans for 2017 will be another round of ambitious club projects; all to improve and protect the assets we all share.
Reflections on a Great Regatta July 2016 I sailed in the Thistle Class National Championships in Eugene, Oregon back in July. Turnout was down, so all 58 boats were on the line in each start and were scored as one fleet, even though they were split into two fleets for awards purposes. I want to send out a huge shout out to the Lake Washington members who sailed: Mike Gillum, Allison Gillum, Dan Clark, David Suder, George Biery, Lisa Wilson, Debi Glovin (Women s Championship and Nationals), and me. Mike tied for fourth in the Championship Division, and Dan took fifth in the President s Division. But, more than learning about sailing in a big fleet, with a very classy group of sailors, I learned about hosting events. I can sum up what I learned in two words: Leta Sellers. Leta is the Commodore of the Eugene Yacht Club at Fern Ridge Reservoir. Leta has been on EYC s board for six years; each year moving up the ladder, becoming Commodore this year. She is a bundle of energy, with her eye on everything. She was there at 6:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m., always with a smile. She did the grunt jobs and the top-end management. She had a cadre of volunteers that worked together to register, house (camping on their grass area) and feed (breakfast, dinner and beer) nearly 200 sailors and race committee members. She did so without the assistance of the board members and organizers from 2007, when Nationals was last held in Eugene. And, at the last Nationals, the food was catered, not produced from their own kitchen, by their lead cook and all around kitchen guru, Janet Mitchell. The only outside help EYC got was a couple of US Sailing judges to help with the rulings for the regatta. Leta s infectious energy filtered throughout EYC s membership. They were there early, and worked together so effectively, some of the guest sailors pitched in, making coffee in the morning or other minor tasks. But, it was the spirit of volunteerism that made the experience great. When I talked with some of the volunteers toward the end of the week, I asked if they were glad it was about over. The answer surprised me: It s bitter sweet. It was a lot of work, but we had so much fun! I thought about why they wanted it to go on. I think I came up with an answer: So many of them worked together with such dedicated purpose, they bonded as a team, and bonded more with their club. I realized, even in my own experience as Commodore -- meeting each member, spending significantly more time at LWSC than when I was previously on the board -- that the more time I put into Club projects, the more fun I have. Exhausting? Maybe. But, a lot more fun. As with the crew at EYC, grinning through their fatigue, working together is a great way to make the Club better, and to increase your enjoyment of our Club. See you at the Club and on the water! Wanted: Turkey Shoot Volunteers Be Part of the Fun! We need help with: launching parking race committee food prep/serving keeping score clean-up, and Giving out turkeys! 6 V O L U M E I, I S S U E I I I W I N T E R Thursday Night Beer Can Races Here is John Doval, the Laser Fleet Captain and organizer of Thursday night racing. See more in the Commodore s letter. This is a great aerial photo of one of the Thursday races. You can see the entire video of the race on our Facebook page. See if you can figure out who should have taken a penalty turn and who didn t need to! Delta Dinghy Ditch Regatta Dave Candey and the Sabin-Shallits race neck and neck to finish the Delta Dinghy Ditch! Read more about this 30-mile race in the Commodore s letter.
One Design Series The final race of the One Design series this year was also host to the Lido District 2 Championship regatta. Read more in the Commodore s letter. There were four classes of fleets in the One Design. The Junior Stampede Joke and Safety Corner Definitions: CruSING: People on a boat Christmas caroling PORT-hole: A little window, but on both sides of a boat Sailor: A person who has ties to home, but is knot there often The correct rope (line) and correct knot make a job possible, easier and safer. For example, the square knot - often called the reef knot is simple. Everyone knows the knot. It has good safe uses. But more people have died using this knot than any other knot, because if you use it to tie ropes together for climbing, it WILL NOT HOLD. Only a few knots are necessary for sailing, but knowing a few more allow you to do more with your lines and be safer.
