COMMODORE S COLUMN This year has just been flying by. There have been so many sailing events to choose from it has been like being in a candy store, and there s something for everyone. We ve already put on a wide variety of events and during the next three months there s even more variety. Just look at the calendar and you ll see what I mean. Now you may think it s a lot of work putting all of these events together, and you re right, but when everyone chips in, it s not such a big burden and it s a lot more fun. Add to that the fact that our members are also very good sailors, and a fun group to be with, you have a real recipe for success. The great thing about our club is we have a great group of club members that, in addition to enjoying sailing, they help plan and put on the events, and everyone knows that part of being in the club means helping out at least one or two times a year. Now if we can just get the wind and the temperature to cooperate we d have everything we want, right? Speaking of events, we ve scheduled the Centerboard Regatta, you know, the two race event with lunch up the there s always wind south fork, for August 19, So, if you know anyone who wants to do something a little fun and a little challenging, please let them know we ve set the date. Also, we re still working to set a date for the Katherine Eavenson Regatta and we ll probably send out s when that date is confirmed. I m committed to making sure this event happens this year and for years to come. Another event I encourage everyone to attend is the monthly members meeting at Mission Rogelio s Restaurant, in Gold River. The next meeting is scheduled for August 8 th, and at the September 12 th meeting we ll have a presentation by Carolyn and Mark McMaster on chartering in the San Juan Islands. Hope we see you soon. Steve VICE-COMMODORE S COMMODORE S REPORT By the time you read this, the only race on the lake in July will have been held (on the 29 th ). Hopefully, it will have cooled off a little. The month of August is a little busier. First up is the Single-handed race on August 5th. This race is for skippers to solo in their boats (boats 2

usually sailed with more than one person). Dave and Lanette Strain have volunteered to do RC for this race. The next day, August 6 th, will be the Lady and the Tramp race. This race is for couples with the lady handling the helm, with the guys handling the sheets. This is usually a fun race for all. Joan and John Poimiroo will be handling the RC duties for this race. Fusion will unfortunately not be present for either race, since we will be on the road to San Diego for the Santana 20 class championships. The following week, August 12 th will be the 3 rd and final Always Wind in the South Fork Summer Series with No Entry Fee for FLYC Members race. This race starts at 11:00am, with the tow boat leaving the docks at about 10:00am. The following week, August 19 th will be the Centerboard regatta. This is a very fun event where we race from the main body of the lake up the south fork to the Salmon Falls Bridge. We stop for lunch, and then race back. It will start at 10:00am. And, to continue the non-stop action, the following week starts the fall series on August 26 th. Dean and Daria Eppley have volunteered to handle the RC duties. I do need race committee for the 2 nd Fall Series race on September 9 th, and the 3 rd race, on October 14 th. If you can assist on any of those dates (including August 12 th ), please let me know. On the website, there is a flyer from the Huntington Lake Association, about saving Huntington Lake. The Forest Service is talking about dropping the lake level 14 feet, which would devastate the local economy and eliminate any regattas on the lake. The letter tells where you can write to help prevent this from happening. SANTANA 20 Fleet 12 still owns Huntington Lake! It came down to the last tack on the last beat of the last race to determine who would win the Santana 20 class at Fresno Yacht Club s High Sierra regatta. After the 1 st day of racing, Fusion (Mark Erdrich, Austin Quilty, and Steve Galeria) was leading Tinkertoy (Blair and Sasha Wallace and Chris Rutz), also from Fleet 12, by a single point. The two boats were 4 points ahead of the 3 rd place boat, so it was obvious that it was going to be a battle between Fusion and Tinkertoy. From the start, the two boats were never more than 3-4 boat lengths apart, with the lead switching between them several times. All of the other boats in the race (there were 10 Santana 20 s racing) had fallen way back and were out of the picture. At the leeward mark, Fusion held a 2 boat length lead when Tinkertoy initiated a furious tacking duel (Austin counted 18 tacks to the finish). The tacking duel featured several lee bow moves, as well as a few ducks. When it was all over, Fusion managed to cross the line less than 2 boat lengths ahead of Tinkertoy for the victory. Both crews had a great time, and hope we will be able to do the same thing at the class championships! Thanks to the Fresno Yacht Club for a great event, and thanks to FLYC s own Mary Niederberger-Lee (and kids), and Stephanie Erdrich for their great RC work. Mark 3

SECRETARY RY NOTES MINUTES FROM JULY 11, 2006 Members Monty Biles, George and Marie Koch, Jason Jenkins, Gary and Karen Preston, Kerry and Joyce Johnson, Madeline and Mike Rayfuse, Mark and Carolyn McMaster, Mark and Stephanie Erdrich, Steve and Pat Galeria joined up at Rogelio s Restaurant on a summer night for the general membership meeting. Steve reported on the Huntington Lake results. FLYC members did a great job of sailing, winning, and enjoying the beautiful mountain atmosphere. It was a sweep for the Banshees. Geoff Baxter took #1, Steve Galeria took #2, and George Koch #3. In the Open Centerboard division, sailing their MegaBytes were Charles Witcher #1 and Dean Epply #5. Craig and Cathee Lee brought home a #2 on their Coronado 15. Mark Erdrich sailed the Dinghy Ditch race for small boats. Afterward, he sold his Banshee. Ask him about the details. Steve announced that there will be one more work day, in August. FLYC is happy to welcome two new members, Pakhtun Shah and Richard MacFarlane. Gary, the money man, had good news about the budget. Currently we are in the black, by $6900 in various accounts. He will do a quarterly report. The youth program netted $254 from the El Dorado Hills Community Services District, who sponsored the Jr. Sailing event this year. Fleet News: Banshee Fleet welcomes Geoff Baxter as its new captain. Fleet 4, Catalina 22 fleet sponsored the Big Brother/Big Sister sailing program. The Santana Fleet has been busy. Look for details in another article. Coming up, for the Sept. meeting, Carolyn and Mark McMaster will present details of their recent San Juan Islands report. The August Meeting will be at Rogelio s in Gold River, Tuesday, the 8 th. See You There! BOARD MEETING - JULY 25 Pat and Steve Galeria treated the board members to a delicious summer dinner. Members present were: Hart, Witcher, Poimiroos, Erdriches, the Niederberger/Lee team, Mike and Madeline Rayfuse, the Prestons, Phil Hodgson and Lanette Strain. After the lovely dinner, the Board got down to business. Items of discussion were: Purchase of a new to FLYC whaler. o Members, keep a sharp eye out for a deal. The motor that we currently have is still a good one, but the Whaler itself is beginning to deteriorate. It was suggested that a sum of $200 to $300 could be a starting place for a Whaler. Phil suggested that we have a 2 year plan for replacing it. Several fun races are coming up o Single-Handed race is on August 5 o The Lady and Tramp sail is August 6 o The Centerboard/Governors Cup is scheduled for August 26 o Another favorite is the Camp-out, Sail and Cap n Ron film festival September 30 at Rancho Seco o Other events include the Fall Regatta, September o The e-life event of the Spooky Sail is on October 7, which is a full moon night o The Joe Beek Championship races is on October 21 o The Awards Dinner, November 18 Mary agreed to contact My Brothers Vinny for the dinner 7

Other topics for discussion were the Katherine Eavenson race (Sherron agreed to organize this) The Feedback on the Notes on Boats was positive If you are interested in the Lady and Tramp sail, contact John Poimiroo. Another item of interest was the Park Pass. We still have one for sale. Contact Gary Preston. The Board voted to reimburse John for the cost of the new logo on the YC building. Gary Preston presented the quarterly budget. We are in the Black. One more clean-up date will be announced. And last, but not least, we caught up with the adventures of Duffy, our own personal world-wide Banshee sailor. Details may appear in another article, suffice it to say, alcohol may be involved. He was in Greece for the Olympics, registering his Banshee in the Laser Fleet. The registrar was not clear in how the Banshee was alike or different from the Laser, and it wasn t until awards time (Duffy got first) did anyone notice the error. Needless to say, the committee stripped him of his win, and pointed to the way out of town, shouting Go to Valencia if you want to race a Banshee. NEW MEMBERS Pakhtun Shah and Eileen Chirstl; they have a Raven, sail #267 address: 9656 Oak Leaf Way, Granite Bay, CA phone: is UCIPAS@aol.com Richard and Denise MacFarland They are at 5740 Windmill Way #11, Carmichael, CA phone is dickm@hpsionline.com Lanette 8

CENTERBOARD ENTERBOARD/ BANSHEE FLEETS Banshee Fleet 1 had a great time at the High Sierra Regatta - Huntington Lake earlier this month. We had 9 bird boats including Jennifer Andrew's first race with Fleet 1. Although the wind was less than typical, there was plenty of wind for our little boats. I'm glad to report all the boats returned to the beach in one piece. Jerry Beaver, George Koch (the younger), Steve Galeria and I rounded out the top 4 for with 11, 10, 8 and 3 points respectively. I believe that means young George won the Koch family cup. Thanks to Mary for being the camp master. After dinner Saturday night (and before the rum tasting) we had an impromptu discussion about the Steel Cup and PCCs at Rancho Seco, October 1. The PCC regatta will be 5 races and the Megabyte sailors agreed to run the races. Thanks Megabytes, we'll return the favor. Don't forget the weekend will included team racing and the 2nd annual Captain Ron film festival Saturday night. If you're interested in camping contact Dean Eppley or me. Don't forget, the summer series continues July 29 and there is plenty of racing before the Rancho Seco weekend. See you on the water. Geoff FLEET 4 RACING NEWS FLYC racing was a little light for the month of July, partly due to the High Sierra Regatta, held at Huntington Lake on the weekends of July 8-98 and I saw lots of FLYC names in the results for the two weekends at Huntington Lake, but no Fleet 4 sailors. I was a little surprised to see that there was not a single Catalina 22 at the regatta. All the High Sierra sailors were lucky to get good weather during their race weekends. The weekend following the regatta saw some fierce storms sweep through the area, storms so severe that the roads in the Huntington Lake vicinity were closed. The next race on the FLYC schedule is the Single-Handed Regatta on Saturday, August 5. First shape for this race is 10:00 am. The Lady and the Tramp Regatta will be held the next day, also at 10:00 am. The race team has to be a male and a female with the female steering sounds like great fun for skippers and crew! Series racing continues with Summer #3 on Saturday, August 12. First shape is 11:00 am in the South Fork. The Fall Series starts up with Fall #1 on Saturday, August 26; first shape for the Fall Series will be 10:00 am on the Olympic circle. Fall #2 follows on Saturday, September 9. 9

Need better sails for your C-22? I still have three used racing genoas and one racing main for sale. Give me a call at (916) for details. Tom LADY AND THE TRAMP One of the fun races of the year for sailors of all abilities is the Lady and the Tramp Regatta, a race in which women skipper the boats and their tramps serve as crew. This year s Lady and the Tramp Regatta occurs on Sunday, August 6 at 10 a.m. at Brown s Ravine. Depending on conditions, it s likely that boats will motor or be towed to the South Fork by the Race Committee, this year chaired by Joan Poimiroo with assistance from her tramp, John. Whether or not you re a serious racer, this fun race provides lots of enjoyment for its participants with all skippers taking away special memories and prizes. Registration fee is $15. Call Joan Poimiroo at to indicate your intent to sail. 10

UTILITY BOAT SOUGHT FLYC is looking for a used utility boat to replace its Boston Whaler RC chase boat. Ideally, the replacement boat will be between 16 and 17-feet in length, with a low freeboard for retrieving in-water sailors and buoys, an open cockpit to aid in setting marks, outboard equipped and with space for a stern rescue swim platform. Members who know of possible candidates are encouraged to pass news of them to Rear Commodore Phil Hodgson, OVER THERE Travel by several club members to Europe in the past few months have allowed them to connect with Duffy Langford. Last word of Duffy s whereabouts was published in The Telltale more than two years ago. When last reported, Duffy had settled in Biarritz, France as he awaited repairs to his Banshee. Duffy was reported to have set up residence in a large striped tent on the Grande Plage, Biarritz most famous beach. There, he regaled the local French Basque populace with stories of his sailing exploits. A visiting Andorran overheard one of Duffy s tales and sought to have him represent the tiny land-locked nation in the 2004 summer Olympic Games. It seemed Duffy qualified to represent Andorra (pop. 76,000) because he was then cohabitating with a beach bunny from Llorts, named Bridgitte. In little Andorra, that made him almost a cousin. You might have seen Duffy carrying the red, yellow and blue national flag of Andorra in the opening ceremonies. And, if you watched the sailing (yes, it was highly edited and appeared in the middle of the night on ESPN 38), his dominance over the Lasers was impressive. Duffy easily gold-medaled the class, though the award was later given to Robert Scheidt of Brazil as the result of a judging scandal. Diari d Andorra, the tiny nation s daily newspaper, expressed the frustration of a nation, when it reported in 480-point Bodoni Bold type on its front page simply and directly Merde! It seemed the Open Laser class was not as open as Andorran Olympic officials had imagined. Disappointment bubbled to scandal when an Albanian race judge ruled (why is it always Albania?!) that the much faster Banshee represented an unfair advantage over the fleet s lumbering Lasers. Duffy responded, I don t know why they re such spoiled sports. Heck, I even gave them a head start in each race! Rather than return the gold medal, Duffy tossed it into Estany Blau, one of Andorra s most beautiful lakes and left the continent, sailing north to escape the constant attention given him by the European paparazzi. Mary Niederberger and Craig Lee found him in an Irish pub near Blarney Castle where they had just kissed the Blarney stone. Duffy was nursing a Guinness and it took Mary s considerable presence to bring Duffy out of his funk and convince him that he ought to return to the sea and finish his quest to be the first to sail around the world in a Banshee, but before he could down the last of his beige brew, Duffy s cell phone rang. It was the co-prince of Andorra, Bishop Joan Enric Vives Sicília, calling to urge him to sail back to Valencia and represent Andorra in The America s Cup. John 11

Dear Fellow PICYA Members: The St. Francis Yacht Club is pleased to invite members of PICYA yacht clubs to the Wednesday Yachtsmen s Luncheon Series. Since 1966, luncheon attendees have enjoyed presentations from a broad range of students and masters of the sea. Speakers educate and entertain WYL audiences 52 weeks a year. Luncheon service starts at 11:45 noon. Speakers commence at 12:30. There s a two-bell signal at 1:00 PM (as polite cover for those who must return to the office or other distractions of our maritime muse) before resumption of the talk and Q&A, which occasionally lasts until 1:45, but never past 2:00 PM. No special attire is required, the buffet lunch runs $12.00 and payment is by Visa, MasterCard or cash. The Bay, as we know it, was formed about 10,000 years ago, after the last of Northern California s three ice ages. Mr. Blatman s high-definition, four-part mini-series Saving the Bay tells the story of our beloved Bay from her birth, through her growing importance to humans, her near-death experience in the early 1960 s and to her healthy recent renaissance. With archival footage of the Save the Bay movement in the 1960 s and its regulatory creation the BCDC, the mini-series reveals old plans by the Army Corp of Engineers which would have allowed progress and Bay-fill to narrow our Bay to a river 1/5 as wide, much like the LA River - which is now encased in cement. August 16th Evans Starzinger and Beth Leonard, Circumnavigating Cruising Couple Trading the Fast-Track and Executive Suites for Round the World Voyages of Personal Discovery Beth and Evans bailed on their high-powered international management consulting jobs in 1992 and set sail aboard their 37 ketch, Silk to learn if they could sail and she could write. The novices were humbled during their first real voyage, as Neptune threw a Force 10 storm across their path to Bermuda. Fifteen years, two circumnavigations and 90,000 cruising miles later, they are the recipients of the Ocean Cruising Club s Vasey Vase and Cruising Club of America s first Far Horizons award. They have written 100+ articles (for Cruising World, Sailing, Yachting World, Practical Sailor, Blue Water Sailing and Yachting Monthly) and Beth has written three books: Voyager s Handbook, Following Seas and Blue Horizons. Hear how Grant and Joni combined the elegance of a Strauss waltz with the charm of the Danube during their lyrical cruise through the heart of medieval Europe. From the Paris of the East, Budapest, to Vienna, the Wachau Valley, past the medieval German villages of Passau and Regensburg and finally to the City of a Hundred Spires, Prague, they lounged in style aboard the 328 long, 36 wide, three story tall MS Switzerland II. Narrow enough to squeeze through dozens of locks and short enough to get under hundreds of bridges, the ship and her partially roofed sundeck became a grand balcony from which to gaze upon the ancient castles and palaces ashore. BTW, the Danube is not blue. At just past the halfway point, we have collected 89% of the year s expected revenue. Most notable, we have met our Membership target (thank you, Lanette Strain). The biggest revenue shortfalls are Food/Beverages and Registration Fees, but we haven t had the summer and fall regattas, or our annual banquet yet. On the expense side, we have spent 78% of the year s total budget, but that s expected with insurance and slip fees paid early in the year. Notable savings are for Internet Service (thanks to Webmaster Mark Erdrich), and Postage/Printing (thanks to Telltale Editor Mary Niederberger). The biggest expenses still to come are Food/Beverages and Trophies/Awards for the summer and fall regattas, and the annual banquet. MAKE ME AN OFFER I CAN'T REFUSE. Call or to make a reasonable offer on FLYC's one remaining State Park Day-Use Pass. It's good at any State Park, including boat launch fee, valid through the end of March The annual value is $200, and with 8 months left, that prorates to $133.
