2 Commodore s Corner Suna Kneisley, Commodore Hi FLYC Members! The summer is off to a great start and we have plenty of water in the lake. And we ve had some pretty good wind too. In fact, conditions were perfect for the Katherine Eavenson Regatta. I m very proud that we were able to run the regatta this year. It turned out to be a match race between two Santana 20s Reaction and Two Step. To read more about the race and results, see Kerry s report on recent race results. The summer has also brought some very erratic weather. In fact, our Membership BBQ was cancelled due to dangerously high temperatures. At this point, we have no plans to re-schedule the BBQ. This year s Bigs n Littles event was a huge success. Laura Ann with Fleet 4 and our very own Madeline Reyfuse, did a fantastic job of hosting and organizing, and FLYC members answered my literal calls for help and turned out in force with more boats and volunteers than ever before. Thank you for making this important event a success! Ok folks, have a wonderful summer and think about new officers for next year. Vice Squad Kerry Johnson, Vice Commodore Lady and the Tramp See John Poimiroo s article for more details, but I just have to mention that this is the first regatta my boat has ever won. Maybe it s not the boat after all? Katherine Eavenson Memorial Regatta Sara Montgomery with crew Stacy Werner beat out Heidi Storm and crew Sana Kneisley to win this great women only regatta. Summer Sunset Series Summer #1 was very hot with little wind. That is probably why we only had two boats racing, George Heinz on a S20 and Jon Kim on his F24. Summer #2 was also hot, but with high winds. We had a lot of boats come out to race but only two made it out to the course, Tim Session on his J70 and Jon Kim again on the F24. So the current standings have Tim winning the tiebreaker over George in the Open Keel class, and Jon is dominating the Multihull class. To date we have no Open Centerboard finishers. Hopefully we will see more boats come out for the remaining two Summer Sunset race days. Upcoming events: 7/14 Summer Series #3 7/21 Centerboard Regatta 8/4 Summer Series #4 8/11 Steele Cup/Dinghy Regatta at Rancho Seco 8/18 Singlehanded Regatta If you are not familiar with the Centerboard regatta, it is our long distance Centerboard race. We start on the main lake and after a short upwind leg, we sail downwind to a finish line near Salmon Falls Bridge. After lunch, included in your race fees, we race back upwind to finish at or near the entrance to the south fork. Total distance is around 11 miles. Come join the fun. We still have holes in the RC schedule. Please take a look and me at flycvice@gmail.com if you can fill in.

Joyce Johnson won the adult class with two firsts and a third. Alexa Cram was top Junior with three firsts. Although Alexa had no Junior competitors, she started with the adults and beat two, then one of them in the three races she sailed. Winds blowing from 10 to 12 knots from the north allowed for a rare F1 course in the first race. Sara Montgomery on a Buccaneer led the fleet through four marks before being overtaken by the three keelboats in the Adult Class. She surged ahead on spinnaker runs (not answered by the other keelboats) but had trouble pointing on the last leg to finish. In the second race, an A8 with winds lightening to 8 to 10 kts, Joyce got ahead and held it despite strong spinnaker runs by the S20 and Buccaneer teams. Sara was substantially behind after the windward leg, but after she hoisted her chute, her Buccaneer chewed up the ground she d lost fetching the windward mark, overtaking Paul Heintz s S20 and making it to the line just five seconds behind the S23. Alexa finished fourth with Debra Sisson and Lynn Stewart s J70 struggling upwind behind her. Prior to the third start, Joyce made the smartest strategic decision of the day, calling for a sail change to a 150 which meant she d forego raising her spinnaker on a rare D7 course in lightening winds (6 to 8 kts) and go with her genoa instead. The change to the starboard rounded D course frustrated Paul and George who knew they couldn t fly their chute because it was in the port hatch from the last race. Shall we gybe then go with the chute? No, maybe not. They deliberated after rounding the first mark, but never answered Joyce who drove powerfully ahead, leading the fleet by a wide margin. Alexa won the third start then kept her Lido within reach of the big boats, finishing third overall, when corrected, and taking home a pair of Lady and The Tramp plush animals sharing a string of spaghetti. Spaghetti was the theme of the after-race party with a pot of it prepared by Joan Poimiroo. Race Committee John Poimiroo and Steve Galeria presented the plush animals to Alexa and her Tramp (her dad) and a pair of Lady & Tramp mugs to Joyce and her tramp, Kerry Johnson. Taking home second place honors in the

4 adult class was Paul Heintz and his dad, George on their S20 who got the traditional rolling pin. FLYC started Lady and The Tramp as a race for husbands and wives who would change their typical roles with the Lady driving the boat and The Tramp as crew. However, recognizing that families were changing, FLYC modified the format some years ago to make it non-gender, and non-age specific so that same-sex couples and parents and children could compete. The idea is a fun day in which someone who doesn t usually drive the boat has that opportunity. This year s event lived up to that idea with great conditions, intense competition and fun sailing. Adult Class Type R1 R2 R3 Pts Finish Joyce Johnson S Paul Heintz S Sara Montgomery Buccaneer Debra Sisson/ Lynn Stewart J Junior Class Type R1 R2 R3 Pts Finish Alexa Cram Lido Secretary/Membership/Web Report Mark Erdrich, Secretary/Membership/Webmaster Unlike last time, very little to report this month. FLYC s total membership is up to 30 families. There have been no new members since May. We held a membership meeting at Cabo s Restaurant back in early May. About 20 people attended where we discussed past events like the Camellia Cup and future events (that are now past events) like the Bigs/Littles event. Mark Werder also showed some pictures and a little video from his Pacific Cup ride, a Swan 46 named Free! Speaking of the Pacific Cup, good luck to the various FLYC members racing to Hawaii! I know of 4 past and present members heading to the islands, as well as a boat formerly owned by a former member which is sailing in the Singlehanded race to Hawaii. No new Website information. I hope you are all using some of the more advanced features of the website like the calendar on your mobile device, newsletters, and the ability to download the updated FLYC roster. If you aren t, information on how to use these features is available in the last few issues of the Telltale. Treasurer s Report Scott Fredrickson, Treasurer A short report this month. Things quieted down after the Camellia Cup -- no surprise. With everything accounted for, the Club added nearly $2,400 to the coffers, our best year yet. I'm still looking for my error(s). : ) The checking account is looking VERY healthy. As expected, while maintenance expenses last year were high, this year have been relatively low, and so far, no sad surprises. Looking forward to the Centerboard Regatta the end of the month. Always a good time chasing the dinghies up and down the South Fork while avoiding skiers. Enjoy the Summer! The big boats will have to be pulled from the lake about the time we write our next articles, always a sad day. P. O. Box 156 Not as many magazines lately, mostly Fortune, Kiteboarder (wonderful photography!!) and Coastal Living. Paid USPS $250 (up $25 from last year) for another year of Box 156. The club received from US Sailing the first installment of a 'Learn to Sail' program for kids. As well as instruction, it includes games to entertain little

5 ones. I will put this in the clubhouse for anyone that can take advantage of it. Let me know and I will reserve any follow-up information for you. Cup Boat Regatta John Poimiroo, Harbor Master at Straits of El Dorado Notice of Race Date: Tuesday, August 14, 2018 Time: 6:00 pm Location: John and Joan Poimiroo s home 1448 Crocker Drive El Dorado Hills, CA Contact: John@Poimiroo.com Hallowed History of the Cup Boat Class The first Cup Boat Regatta was held in John and Joan Poimiroo s swimming pool (then declared by Dean Eppley to thereafter be called The Straits of El Dorado) on June 27, Participating were about 20 boats, constructed by members of Banshee Fleet #1, Sacramento. No awards were given, though everyone had a good time. At the end of the evening, an honored tradition of Cup Boat racing was begun as all competing boats were thrown into a trash can. No Cup Boat has ever been displayed in an airport lobby, yacht club bar or trophy case, and none ever will be. Class Rules and Sailing Instructions Rule #1 Construction of the Boat A. The only materials that can be used to build a Cup Boat are: i. One Styrofoam coffee cup ii. Plastic drinking straws (unlimited) iii. One plastic sail not to exceed 5.5 x 8 iv. Plastic shipping tape (as much as you like). Though, tape cannot be used to increase sail area. v. Ballast (pennies as many as you like) vi. The boat and its sail may be decorated with ink markers of any color vii. A clearly legible sail number must appear on the Cup Boat s mainsail viii. The Cup Boat symbol (the outline of a Styrofoam coffee cup) must appear on the mainsail. B. Cup Boats must be constructed on race day from materials supplied by the Race Committee. Any boat made in advance or from materials other than those supplied by the Race Committee is ineligible to compete in a Cup Boat race. C. A competitor may enter only one boat, but may construct more than one boat to test designs prior to first shape (time permitting). The race committee reserves the right to restrict each competitor to one cup or sail, in order that all who wish to race may do so. D. Scissors, a hole punch and knives are provided to assist in manufacturing Cup Boats. The cup, sail and its mast/s may be cut and modified into any design and used any way desired. Plastic tape may be used on the boat in any way desired. E. Prior to racing all Cup Boats shall be placed on a display table to be judged in order to satisfy Rules #7 B i., ii., and iii. Rule # 2 Double Elimination Rounds Cup Boats race in double elimination rounds. The Straits of El Dorado can accommodate four Cup Boats per round. With four boats, two boats win and two lose. Boats continue to compete until they lose twice. In circumstances where only three boats are available to race, one shall be given a loss. The Race Committee will announce what boats can race and what boats must sit out a race. Example, the RC may announce this round is for boats that have not raced previously, or this round is for boats that have raced previously half one loss, half no losses or this round is for undefeated boats. Rule #3 Non-interference When sailing, a Cup Boat may be righted if it capsizes. A swamped boat may also be emptied of water. Capsized or swamped boats may be righted at their location, but cannot be propelled forward by throwing, pushing, wave action or individual application of artificial air other than artificial air inherent to the Straits of El Dorado. A Cup Boat s direction cannot be purposefully changed by touching the boat. The Straits of El Dorado, the traditional sailing venue for the Cup Boat Regatta, has a

6 peculiar wind condition that is shop-fan-aided; the addition of shop fans that benefit all competitors is allowed within this rule. Rule #4 Race Committee A. The Race Committee shall be comprised of all people attending the Cup Boat Regatta who are not wearing swim suits and who do not have a boat entered in the regatta. This includes people who know nothing about sailing and perhaps have never set foot in a sailboat before. B. The Race Committee chairperson shall be the harbor master at the Straits of El Dorado (John Poimiroo) or, if the harbor master is not available, a person of sterling character and unquestioned honesty. Of course, since such people are not usually found attending Cup Boat Regattas, any person who appears to be otherwise coherent will do. The chairperson shall not be allowed to protest his/her election as chairperson, but shall be allowed to request an adult beverage. C. Prior to the first race, the Race Committee shall look at each boat and award Special Awards as defined in Rule #7 B i., ii., and iii. D. The Race Committee, while judging Special Awards shall also determine if any boat violates any part of Rule #1. If so, that skipper shall be congratulated for his/her audacity and asked to correct the error before racing commences. A boat that does not comply with Rule #1 shall not be allowed to race. Rule #5 Racing and the Course A. All races shall have a leeward start and finish, and be a single leg (half sausage). B. The Race Committee shall designate a starting area. Cup Boats must fit within the starting area and be no wider than one third of the starting area. No part of a Cup Boat shall extend outside the starting area. C. In races involving two boats, the first boat to travel the length or width of the Straits of El Dorado or designated racing area (predetermined prior to race by the Race Committee) is the winner. In races with three or four boats, the first two boats to finish win. D. All boats must move on their own power, using natural wind only (this includes artificial air inherent to the Straits of El Dorado). No blowing, fanning, wave action or pushing by a competitor or spectator are allowed. E. Skippers may right a capsized boat as noted in Rule #3 F. Boats are placed within a designated starting area near the edge of the pool and released by their skipper at the start. No skipper may be in the water. Skippers may not advance or interfere with any boat s progress, once the race has begun. Violation of this rule is cause for disqualification. The purpose of this race is to see which boat is fastest due to its design. Rule #6 Protests A. Protests are encouraged, as long as they are absurd, impassioned, humorous, not personal and brief. B. All protests shall be dismissed after being ridiculed by the Race Committee. Rule #7 Awards A. The skipper who does not lose twice is the regatta champion. He/she wins a Styrofoam cup. This may not seem much, but remember a Styrofoam cup is the equivalent of a brand new boat! The Cup Boat Regatta holds the distinction (to our knowledge) of being the only regatta in which its champion wins a brand new boat of its class. B. Special Awards The Race Committee may award special awards if sufficient trophies are available. There shall never be classy or valuable trophies at a Cup Boat regatta. Tacky, useless and inexpensive awards are most fitting the Cup Boat class. Possible special awards include: i. Most Original Design ii. Most Beautiful Design iii. It s Amazing It Didn t Sink Immediately Out of Sight (this trophy may be awarded to any boat, including a boat that sinks immediately out of sight) Deed of Gift If you read this far, you are in serious need of rest and recuperation. There is no DEED OF GIFT in Cup Boat racing. Get a life.

7 FLEET NEWS Banshee Beat Steve Galeria, Fleet Captain sites.google.com/site/bansheefleetone Coming Events: Sat 7/21, Centerboard Regatta, Folsom Lake Sat 8/11, Steele Cup/Dinghy Regatta, Rancho Seco BANSHEES - Fun Boats, Fun People, Fun Times Catalina Chatter Captain s Report (edited) Monte Whitefield, Captain Captain Monte here to talk about what we have down the line for Fleet 4. We will be having a swap meet at Mike and Madeline Rayfuse s house in August. They have a huge lot and this is a great way to pick up gear at a great deal. I want you to know that there are changes coming down the road to make this club more fun! I ve had people suggest things that they would like to see happen moving forward, and myself and the team listened and really want to make this a club that will be a lot of fun for everyone. Cruising Corner (edited) Laura-Ann Charlot, Cruising Director In August, we have the Shooting Star Cruise at Union Valley Reservoir. Union Valley in August is a nice getaway spot: the temperatures are milder than at Folsom Lake, and most afternoons, a westerly wind sets in, so you can get some actual sailing. In September, there will be a cruise over Labor Day weekend, and possibly two cruises: one at Folsom Lake, since it is projected that Labor Day weekend will be mandatory haulout for the low water at the end of the season, and an "away" cruise in the Delta. Both cruises need cruise leaders. The suggested itinerary for a Delta cruise is a round trip, from Brannan Island State Park to Antioch and back. The San Juans/Gulf Islands Cruise will start the weekend after Labor Day, or possibly Labor Day weekend itself, if mandatory haulout at Folsom Lake Marina happens earlier than anticipated, in mid to late August. Itinerary for this cruise is still in the planning stage, except that it will launch from Bellingham. Racing Report (edited) Mike Rayfuse, Racing Chair I have attended the Go for the Gold Regatta in the past, and it is a good experience with a nice lake and very nice club facilities at the launch ramp. The wind is another matter at this lake it blows, but from what direction? Like most west slope Sierra Nevada lakes, the prevailing wind is from the west or upslope. However, due to the local geography, and a hot concrete dam at the end of a winding river canyon, things get strange early in the day. It s like you don t want to be in the lead approaching the weather mark because odds are that the wind coming over the dam will not behave and attach to the surface of the lake, causing frustration and gnashing of teeth. One learns from the leader s mistakes. Later in the day the wind will increase and things settle down, but the puffs can cause some knockdowns if you are not ready to release the sheets. I have done a couple of embarrassing 540 degree turns while lying in the bottom of the cockpit unable to steer the boat. It was my inexperience with the boat s habit of losing steerage because the rudder comes out of the water if one heels too far. What happens is the boat heels til the rudder loses it, then the boat heads up into the wind so far that it tacks. All of a sudden you re sitting on the wrong side of the boat and in an effort to get to the other side

8 you fall into the cockpit well trying not to get hit by the boom. While ducking you forget to steer and the boat s momentum causes an immediate gybe, bringing you back to where you started (360 degrees so far), but you are still trying to get the rudder in hand. Still sheeted in fore and aft and heeling hard pulling the rudder out of the water again. As the boat tacks for the second time the crew is finally getting to the jib sheets and you find the tiller handle jammed over hard to the new weather side. Getting a hold of the tiller and climbing out of the well to release the main sheet, the boat finally stands up, the rudder works, you re going the wrong way, and the crew is thinking WTF, I need a new skipper. Gybing again, you re back on course, have lost ten boat lengths, and gained some bruises to the body or the ego. The mainsheet must be released early in the puff, and also make sure the vang is off so that the boom can rise allowing the top of the main to twist off releasing the pressure aloft and reducing the heel. Again, too much heel and the rudder fails to do its job. Another possible event for the C22 crowd is the High Sierra Regatta on July at Huntington Lake, located above 6000 feet in the southern Sierras. A world class venue for sailing with daily winds beginning at 10:00 AM or so, and lasting til 5:00-6:00 PM. It s a long somewhat narrow lake with the winds blowing west to east down the length. Beautiful location with some condo s and four nearby campgrounds. The biggest drawback I have found is dump facilities if you have an RV. It s 15 miles back up to the 7000 ft. summit to Camp Edison near Shaver Lake. However, if you like roughing it in style, Camp Edison has full hookups, Cable TV, and great facilities. Pretty setting too! Santana Soundings groups.google.com/forum/#!forum /santana20fleet12 Mark Werder, Captain Hey Tuna 20 sailors!! Hope you have been enjoying the high water and pleasant temperatures out on Folsom Lake. Post Camellia Cup there haven't been any major S20 events locally, but that certainly doesn't mean 20's aren't out sailing. Wednesday night beer-cans have been going great with regular appearances from my boat 2-Step and George and Suna's boat Reaction. Wind has been solid every Wednesday, and we have only seen a day or two above 100 degrees. These informal races are a great time to tune up with your crew or train a new crew. We did see one major match race this year in the recently revived Katherine Eavenson regatta. Every year this race takes on a slightly different form, and this time it was a double handed S20 match race between Stacy Werder and Sara Montgomery versus Suna Kneisley and Heidi Storm. Wind was perfect with a steady blowing from the southwest. Both boats were racing hard to put their name on the KE trophy, and in the end Stacy and Sara took the win. The racing was fun to watch from the committee boat, and everyone involved had a great time! Next up on the S20 calendar is the Class Championships, here are the details: Dates: July You are invited to attend the 2018 Santana 20 Class Championship Regatta, hosted by the Rogue Yacht Club (RYC), to be sailed on Howard Prairie Lake, Oregon. This year the weekend portion of our regatta will be held in conjunction with the Southern Cascade Regatta (July 28-29, 2018). See our class website for more information.

9 One last thing, if you're wondering where 2-Step went, I took the boat home for storage until I get back from racing the 2018 Pacific Cup aboard the Swan 46 "Free". Don't get any crazy ideas to race an S20 in this race as the minimum boat length is 24 feet Master Calendar Date Day Time Event Location July 7/11/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake 7/14/18 Sat 5pm FLYC Summer Sunset Series #3 Folsom Lake 7/14/18 Sat-Sun High Sierra Keelboat Weekend Huntington Lake 7/18/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake 7/21/18 Sat 10am Centerboard Regatta Folsom Lake 7/25/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake August 8/1/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake 8/4/18 Sat 5pm FLYC Summer Sunset Series #4 Folsom Lake 8/8/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake 8/11/18 Sat 11am Steele Cup/Dinghy Regatta Rancho Seco 8/14/18 Tues 6pm Cup Boat Regatta El Dorado Hills 8/15/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake 8/18/18 Sat 10am Singlehanded Regatta Folsom Lake 8/22/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake 8/29/18 Wed 6pm Beer Can Race Folsom Lake September 9/9/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #1 Folsom Lake 9/11/18 Tue 7-9pm Membership Meeting TBD 9/16/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #2 Folsom Lake 9/23/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #3 Folsom Lake 9/30/18 Sun Noon Governor's Cup Series #4 Folsom Lake October 10/13/18 Sat 10am FLYC Work Party Folsom Lake November 11/3/18 LWSC Turkey Shoot Lake Washington 11/10/18 Sat 6pm FLYC Annual Banquet TBD 11/23/18 Fri 11am Black Friday Cruise Folsom Lake Racing will be cancelled once the lake elevation reaches 400'
